    The bad:
The best thing is that Travis hadn't tried to come back (again) after the disastrous game where he supposedly came back and it was embarrassing, this game is even more embarrassing. It's a game that feels old, like the Wii/X360/PS3 generation. The aesthetics by keeping it old-fashioned makes the game look horrible except in certain close ups in which the textures go for a walk and disappear. The graphic section is inconsistent in some parts, it looks acceptable in others, horrifying. The Quick Time Events (QTE) are still there, which shows that the gameplay has not advanced a day. The recurring jokes of the series are there but we have already seen them in previous games so they will only get a smile the first time and maybe a Ha.

    The Meh!:
It's sad to see Grasshoper stuck in the past. It is confirmed (as I said in the review of Travis Strike Again: No More Heroes) that the previous game was only made to get money from the fans since it did not bring anything new to the saga and was just a constant repetition of what already happened. seen in this saga and others that haunt Nintendo consoles. Yes, it is a game for fans, which is something that directly clashes with the description of the game where it says that it returns after 10 years (we return to the same ones that Travis Trike Again did not count) so my question is how many true fans of No More Heroes are really left? And if true fans or some curious/clueless person out there who buys the game by mistake, will that be enough for a next game to exist?

Wow what a game, dont be discouraged to try this game out, it is one of the most stylish and beautiful games I have ever played. The menus, the music, the colors. The combat. It has a few minor issues and the overworld isnt greatly optimized but this is not what the games is about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a new fan of nmh shortly before playing this game. I bought the first two titles on switch in preparation for the third and my time has been largely enjoyable. NMH 3 is by far my favorite title, but I feel like there were many missed opportunities. Its a bit of a one step forward, two steps back situation.

NMH 3 has a proper antagonist in FU, which made the game more enjoyable from a story standpoint compared to the first two games. I really enjoyed the deathglove skills and creating deathglove chips, I think it did a lot for the combat and is a highlight for me. The mini games are fun this time around, the music is great, and the combat is quite addicting. Being able to rematch bosses at higher difficulties for better rewards is an excellent addition, it is something that I have utilized heavily in order to grind rarer components to make stronger deathglove chips.

My main problem with this game is the lack of custimization. I miss being able to change every part of travis' clothes from NMH 2, or being able to get new katanas like in the first two games. I also feel that the pacing is off. The majority of deathglove skills are obtained all at once, the game could have benefited from having more deathglove skills and having them being unlockable one at a time. I think it would have been cooler to give a large selection of deathglove skills and allow the player to mix and match. I also feel that the combo system in nmh 2 was superior to nhm 3. Being able to mix in physical attacks with katana slashes did a lot to keep the combat from getting too stale in nmh2 and is something I have missed in the finale. I also think the lack of stores in nmh3 renders the open world pointless. It was fun to drive around for a while and see the different sections of the cities but it got boring for me relatively quickly. The game is also a bit buggy and suffers from fps drops, glaring pop-ins, and slow texture loading. My final complaint is that it is far too easy to max out Travis skills and stats, which brings me to my conclusion.
All in all NMH3 is a wonderful time, but my main complaints come from not having enough of the game! I wanted more customization options like clothes, katanas, and deathglove skills. I wanted more progression in the form of a deeper upgrade tree and combat skills. Lastly, I wanted more to do in the overworld, going from ufo to ufo in order to participate in a ranked fight became more of a chore than anything - the combat is fun, but the way in which combat is facilitated could have used some more work.

NMH3 is by no means a bad game, in fact its quite the opposite, I just think there were several missed opportunities that would have really propelled this game to legendary status.

Cult game director Goichi Suda a.k.a. "Suda51" has made a name for himself over the years by putting out a variety of eccentric titles with a one of a kind punk rock style. "Suda51" has made a name for himself over the years by putting out a variety of eccentric titles with a one of a kind punk rock style. What's kept him from breaking out into mainstream success however is that the gameplay of his projects has never quite matched their personality. Well, in the 11 years since we received the last mainline No More Heroes entry, it's clear Suda used the time to iron out all of the faults and deliver something that will finally allow a much wider range of gamers to embrace his madness.

Rest assured, things are just as delightfully wild as ever. I missed the grindhouse vibes and sexuality of its predecessors, but III's new more lighthearted tone that parodies stuff like today's superhero blockbuster obsessed culture somehow ups the levels of creativity, absurdity, and unpredictability. There are a plethora of inventive one-off oddball scenarios and the series' typical brand of vulgar, violent fourth wall breaking humor to ensure you never know what's coming next. Only now all the wackiness is supported by some of the best hack and slash action around.

This has always kind of been a boss rush franchise where the goal is to take out a collection of memorable psychopaths to make it through the story. These challenging encounters are what carried the prior two (and a half) entries in the trilogy, and that's no different here. Where this third chapter improves though is in the downtime spent in-between each big showdown. Once again you'll need to raise funds in order to access the next fight, and there are a number of ways to do so from "Designated Matches" against the (surprisingly difficult) basic enemy types to odd-jobs. Even the most menial tasks like grass mowing or unclogging toilets are unexpectedly fun and Suda at long last figured out how to make the open-world all of this takes place in interesting by littering the map with objective markers, side quests, and hidden collectibles.

The combat itself also flows much smoother than it did on the Wii due to not having to put up with that consoles awkward control scheme. It reminded of what a revelation I found Heroes Paradise on the PS3 to be. You have a mix of light and heavy attacks, returning "Death Glove" powers that run on a timer from Travis Strikes Again, a gauge that determines the strength of your combos depending on how well you perform, and unique abilities like being able to slow down time after pulling off a perfect dodge. All of which come together to create a complex system with a lot of options. You can even upgrade your base stats with a secondary currency (which is basically just EXP) gained from missions meaning that character progression is deeper than simply grinding to buy a new beam katana.

All of this makes No More Heroes III the most polished and complete effort from Grasshopper Manufacture to date. I'm not going to lie and say everything is perfect. You can tell there are some aspects that suffer from budgetary constraints, such as the lack of compelling rewards for completing the secondary tasks. Yet, Suda's imagination is in top form to deliver a vision more memorable and gonzo nuts than ever before, and with the always enjoyable test of clashing with bosses being surrounded by stronger supporting content than any time prior there's truly no reason to not give one of Japan's particularly intriguing distinctive minds a well-deserved chance, whether it be once again or as your very first experience.

It's a solid 6/10 game; no more, no less. The combat is pretty fun, but the rest of the game is a mess. Yeah, they were a bit Dynasty Warrior-esque with how easily you could mow through most of the enemies, but that was kind of the appeal. You felt a sense of progression as you moved through these custom-built levels towards the bosses. The hub world was empty, but at least this was at a time where hub worlds generally weren't THAT full of life. It was *somewhat* excusable as a sort of tongue-in-cheek joke at the time.

NMH3 is what I would call a fan disservice. It's such a blatantly lazy game. There's no attention to detail whatsoever, and it's obvious from the very first time you get the "press A button to open the beam katana" prompt. There's no fluidity whatsoever. I was never able to get it to open in a fluid motion. There was always a slight pause between Travis drawing the katana, and then pressing A to open it, where Travis kind of just stands motionless and awkwardly because the creators couldn't even get this EXTREMELY basic game-feel down right! It would be SUCH a satisfying thing to draw the katana perfectly without that obnoxious pause. And yes, this is a minor thing, but the game is PLAGUED with these "minor things" -- these relics of bad game design that most games had weeded out in the 2010s: collectables that aren't tracked, ultra rare drops that require you complete the same boss dozens of times on the hardest instakill mode to get, the same, boring battles over and over again with mobs on the same overworld map rather than purpose-built stages, a 40 minute self-indulgent cutscene sequence at the start of the game that's an absolute chore to watch, with characters we've LONG stopped caring about (or even forgotten), with terrible writing, horrible CGI, more self-indulgent "Miike is so great he's my hero" obnoxious fanboyism between each set, things that were forced into the game just because they felt like they had to be, and were then handled in the absolute worst way possible (Henry Cooldown), and a STILL-EMPTY overworld map that performs like piss in 2021. There's no excuse for it. This would've been a decent Gamecube game back in the day, but now it's a dusty, shoddy relic of a time long-forgotten.

it is a short game that has high replayability. Fans the series will appreciate the title but i feel like it could have had more to it. Travis is still a good character and Robin Atkin Downes still delivers.

the lack of actual linear levels leading to bosses like the other games was odd to have absent, instead the player clear 3 challenge levels before fighting a boss.

Some character stuff was really odd like a previous character for some unknown reason is now a tree (naomi) ?? the game also really misses an oppertunity to do more with its other characters like Shinobu and Bad girl who seemed like she would have a larger part.

The Alien bosses are different but were mostly still good boss battles. The cartoonish intro cutscene introducing the main antagonist was great but ultimately the main villan could have been fleshed out a bit more

There's a few good boss fights but this is easily the weakest of the trilogy.

The open world performance might actually be worse than the original because the pop in and frame rate drops are far more frequent than 1 which ran pretty smooth for a wii game but 3 has no excuse given its on more advanced technology. Id be more forgiving of the open world if it was more than just a retread of the first game but it isn't, you'll be doing the same padded out gameplay as before only not as charming because its just more of the same.

The combat is honestly pretty garbage and kind of proves that most people praising it never played the original games. The low/high stance mechanic has been replaced with a generic light/heavy attack move set that gets old very quickly. The game also introduces cooldown abilities which just shows how the devs are trying to appeal to morons who need to spam things like the deathglove to win.

And the story, hooo boy what a heap of garbage. Further proof that the "gamers" praising it never played the first 2 games because if they did then it would be obvious how much NMH3 jumps the shark from a writing standpoint. Now I know what those who were dropped at a young age will probably say, "bUt dA FiRsT GaEmZ WeR SiLLy ToO" but what they fail to understand is that the originals were gradual in their absurdity, they built up to their moments where as 3 blows its load right from the start. Beyond the Intro cutscene the game is in a constant downward spiral of references to past games, 4th wall breaking that stopped being funny a while ago, and cutscenes that never know when to stop

The music is easily the worst of the trilogy, I had high hopes after hearing that red orca was a track until I found out they butchered the best part of the song and that it was the only memorable piece of music in the entire game. None of the other tracks stood out to me.

Bottom line: this is the third game in a series that does very little to innovate from the previous entries and in stead opts to retread the same territory of the first game while repeating the same mistakes. If you're a binary thinking monkey who enjoys "LOL so randum!" type humor then you will probably clap your hands at the funny things/pretty colors on screen but if you're a dedicated fan of the series and wanted to see anything other than more of the same then you'll be left out in the cold.

There was no way my Mom would let me play the first 2 games at my age back then lol, so they just escaped my mind for the longest time after that until I got the chance to try out NMH III. So this game is pretty damn fun despite some glaring flaws. Positives first; the soundtrack SLAPS & I NEED to download the full thing on YouTube for my workout sessions. The story is insanity personified honestly, I really don’t know how to make sense of it so I won’t & will enjoy it for what it was! I’ve heard even an extensive knowledge on the NMH games that came before can only help so much here, so I don’t feel as lost as I thought I would’ve. I’m sure some of the story beats would’ve hit harder had I played the first 2 (3? If you count Travis Strikes Again), so that’s obviously on me. It’s still off the walls enjoyable to a complete NMH stranger like myself & it truly felt like conquering impossible odds going through the story. The combat is awesome too! I’m still shocked that the weak Switch can even hit 60fps but it RARELY fell below 60 during a fight for me. I also appreciate how i almost never had to grind for money, something the reviewers said was a big issue but it’s really non existent if you do all the designated matches before bosses lol. Almost all of the big bosses themselves are AWESOME spectacles too, but some were better than others. But this is where we have to get into the downsides, which will start with the combat unfortunately. I stand by it being fun as hell, but it did kind of get repetitive towards the very end, and it didn’t help that the enemy variety is pretty slim. I’m talking the last 2 hours here, but for the whole game you’ll be fighting different combinations of the same enemies over and over. A little more variety would’ve been welcome, kind of a minor issue for me personally but I can see others growing tired of it quicker than I did. I also REALLY didn’t like the Deathman arcade game you had to play during the story, it was only twice but it was annoying & pace shattering. Yes the story is all over the place, I think that’s by design but it doesn’t help make a super memorable story. It was entertaining like I said, but nothing fantastic. But the biggest problem everyone has with this game from what I’ve seen is the performance & open world. I understand art styles but this game looks downright UGLY a lot of the time. I get it’s not a big AAA game but damn, it looks straight off the Wii at times! The open world is pretty bad too, besides being empty and virtually lifeless, it’s just ugly to look at. Especially the extremely grainy war torn area, it’s not good when your game is hurting your players’ eyes just looking at it. The grain goes away during the cutscenes of that area so that begs the question of why the hell it was there in the first place. The open world barely hits 30fps riding around on your motorbike, going from the smooth 60fps combat to the sluggish 20fps of the open world is jarring to say the least. There’s nothing completely game breaking here, but there’s enough flaws to justify saying this game needs some serious polishing in certain areas. But the game ends on a very interesting note & I will be tuned in to see what the future of NMH becomes, and will possibly be diving into the past games to see what makes this series so special to so many. And yes, to partially make some sense of the story I witnessed lol. Expand

I bought NHM 3 on launch. I had to force myself to finish it. It's such so bugged out and unpolished. I have no idea why they got rid of the "Beat-em-up" sections I liked so much at each rankings... Instead it's just a mindless "go to fight spot x y and z, kill, repeat 5 times, boss fight". The boss fights are hit and miss for me. Some we're fun and original, some we're such a pain. What saves the whole thing is the artistical direction which was on part with the other.

I got soft locked twice in the game, both during battles. Had to restart the whole game... great. The FPS in this game is a joke... goes from 15 to 30. Unbelievable in 2021 even on the Switch. I remember playing Astral chain - the game looked similar and seemed to be a constant 30 fps.

The parts between bosses just feels like such a chore. Those zones are so big and empty (especially 3-4-5): It really feels like they we're onto something but just scratched it out for some reason (Beat-em-up phases?)

In all honesty, I think they should of just kept the same graphical level as the first 2 game. It didn't even age that bad from what I saw on the Switch versions. I certainly would not have minded if it meant having a constant 60 fps - hell alone a 30-45 FPS.

I'm giving this a very generous 6. I have a hard time believing the people who gave this a higher score played the same game as me.

This game is absolutely amazing. Let's get the elephant out the room. The game's visuals and performance. The overall visuals are good. This game is absolutely amazing. Let's get the elephant out the room. The game's visuals and performance. The overall visuals are good. They're not AAA budget visuals, as the No More Hero games were never huge budget titles. There are some technical issues here and there. Most so in the open world sections. But nothing that's game breaking.

Everything else is solid. Great music, awesome characters, extremely stylish gameplay and world. Solid fluid combat, great story, great controls, etc. This game is definitely one of the best action games released this year. It's extremely fun and reminds me of an era (3rd gen to 6th gen), when gameplay was the most important factor when playing a video game. Nowadays seems like a game can have mediocre gameplay, but high end realistic graphics and get perfect to near perfect scores( at least from the western media).

Overall NMH III, is a great experience with its stylish and over the top action!

Right off the bat, it's balls to the wall action, the first 2 hours of story-line is perfect, a great introduction to the new button layouts and new mechanics (a forced, but necessary tutorial, at least on my current ) also, the cut-scenes and the entire vibe is just perfect and you are introduced to the assassins! The transitions, the animations, the soundtrack, I literally wanted to cry. I've waited 11 years for this and it is everything I could have dreamed of. The game is gorgeous, UE4 shines in my opinion, of course it has the strange texture load in that is present in any game running on this engine, but they optimized graphics in very interesting ways. The game focuses on the most important scenes at all times and makes sure they look amazing, you lose quality into the distance, but for me it was only noticeable in the open world......but even then the open world "technical issues" are not present, at least from my point of view, also the frame rate seems to be locked at 30... (texture pop-in, but it fixes itself and that doesn't bother me personally). I take into account that the Switch internal hardware can only be pushed so far and Suda's team did an amazing job with optimizing performance in the open world...It feels the opposite of dead and empty, it feels ALIVE. Look at the amount of detail in this world vs. the first, the huge freaking space ship constantly hovering in the sky and the several different locations you can now visit. It's honestly a bit overwhelming! But in the best way possible. I cannot wait to keep playing this game, it's literally all I have thought about since I began. The combat btw, PHENOMENAL, Suda and team have out done themselves, it truly feels like Travis has finally found his groove as an assassin and he is not afraid to show it. Once you get a handle on the controls, combat is so fluid (the frame rate truly shines here with what feels like a locked 60 fps) and the pumping soundtrack makes you want to find the next battle! Seriously, if you are a fan of Grasshopper Manufacture's games, this is the best one they have made to date. It's the best No More Heroes game and Travis's final chapter in the saga. Do yourself a favor and pick this up!!!

UPDATE: I love how each boss is set up like an episode, it makes the game more fun to play in segments. You can divide it up like you are watching a TV series, (If you are anything like me, I cannot focus long so it drives incentive for me to play each week.) On top of that, the Intro and Outro videos are perfect, the songs are perfect. (The entire soundtrack rocks)

If I have to be honest, for me this game is disappointment. 1 and 2 were classic. Things I dislike about 3 are so many...
First, you ruined Travis look. He looks old and fat. His hair seems made of plastic, all this for a few small details like skin, teeth, we could live without this!
Too bright colors and titles made my eyes ache. Game is loading too slow on Switch. His cat is a male

I finished the game just to follow the story. No pleasure gained from playing it. You ruined the essence.
And why you always change the controls? Hard to get used to something after you change it every since in a while!

Its alluring punk and inspired B-movies spirit are some of the things that keep me getting back to it. While I'm not sure if creator SUDA51 has achieved the title of genius, at least not yet, one must commend his way of making games, unrefined but with a lot of heart and passion kind of games.

The story takes place 9 years after the events of NMH2 and apparently 2 years after Travis Strikes Again, Santa Destroy has been invaded by space pirates led by the once cute and seemingly harmless Jess Baptiste VI A.K.A. FU.

Although the narrative has more cohesion, it is also divided by episodes, literally, episodes with an opening and ending song (both of which are great by the way), these episodes are more or less self-contained stories which is not a bad idea but it is also a double-edged sword since it still separates the main narrative albeit less than the other games.

It is worth noting that NMH 3 it’s more a sequel to Travis Strike Again than NMH 2 or at least that is my perception as I didn’t and regrettably haven’t played TSA. The story has many key throwbacks to TSA and a few to the numbered entries. If you played TSA then you’ll be rewarded by having faith in Grasshopper and expect some important twists related to that game.

NMH 3 maintains the simple yet satisfying combat introduced in NMH 1, you have two types of attacks, light and heavy which can be used to connect pretty basic combos and once you completed a full combo the screen will prompt you to use motion controls to simulate a final slash, this slash was satisfying in NMH 1 and 2, and it is still quite satisfying in 3. It’s possible to change the motion controls if you don’t fancy them but I highly recommend keeping them.

The main dish in this course are the boss fights, they always have been the center of NMH and they still are, every single one of them introduces a new boss with quite different mechanics and gameplay options, some of them have several phases but every one of them surpass your expectations and makes you want to meet the next fight as soon as possible, they make you forget the repetitive process of accessing them, so I assume a big part of the budget and resources were used in them.

One thing the game excels at and isn’t debatable for me is its amazing presentation and art direction. From the very beginning when the game starts with a 2D mockup game in Beat em’ up fashion and right after that a beautiful and stylish animation kicks in about FU and Damon, from the tutorial cards and its classic bathroom saving scenery, it is just wonderful. The surprises don’t end just there as each chapter comes in with its own pieces of stylization, and every time a new graphic style comes in it is hard to not be smiling all the way through.

Another highlight from the series is its music, same as the game and maybe Grasshopper philosophy too. It has a renegade/punk spirit that it’s hard to overlook, it doesn’t have a song with the iconic NMH 1 theme but it’s filled with leitmotifs here and there. The music’s so versatile that you also wonder what will be the next tune to hear. Maybe I’m over-excited about the soundtrack but it might be my favorite from the series.

Sadly NMH3 only features an English dub, it has been this way since the start of the series but I was hoping this time around we Westerners could choose between Japanese or English VA. The result it's in line with the previous entries of the series which might sound great if you liked it, I sure like it back then when I was younger, however, the game has an over the top quality while going from whimsical to serious in many scenes, and it's on the darker more serious parts where the acting seems to miss the mark by far, in general, they sound more like caricatures than characters and that killed the mood of many scenes for me, serious or not.

No More Heroes 3 still struggles to be an overall great game but it also delivers in different aspects, I don’t think I have played a game as committed with its style as this one. Some of its parts could be tainted with budget restrictions or questionable acting but I didn’t encounter any dull moment in my entire Spicy 23-hour campaign, it is rough around the edges but its edges are quite sharp. Goichi Suda stated that this would mark the end of Travis story for the time being to focus on creating new IPs that belong to Grasshopper and that could be a good thing, maybe 10 years later when the team has acquired more experience still we could finally see a less limited version of what their vision is for NMH 3, but for the time being, it is a satisfying conclusion for the series.

If you like the games then this is really great. I don't know why a couple mainstream reviewers somehow hated this one but it was fantastic.

The combat is very meaty, boss fights are properly varied and the absurd story is one of the strongest points of the game. However, No More Heroes III is very uneven and got stuck in the past decade both in terms of gameplay and design. Actually, the series regressed in some aspects. Goichi Suda obviously ran out of ideas an is chasing his own tail. [11/2021, p.62]

It’s ironic that the original game used to satirize the stagnation of video games industry, but now, No More Heroes 3 is afraid to leave familiar ground. Still, long-time fans will enjoy this new chapter of Travis Touchdown’s adventures. [Issue#255, p.54]

Travis Touchdown has grown in his “final installment” of No More Heroes. Because of this, the overall game has a different feel than previous entries and might be why it’s my favorite game in the franchise. Travis is a much more likeable character with some tangible realizations of action’s consequences. Paired with an interesting story, this makes No More Heroes 3 the best entry in the series. If you are a fan, No More Heroes 3 should definitely be added to your library.
