I’m a huge fan of the series but how are these reviews excusing there open world performance? 19-20 frames in the open world? Inexcusable. There’s a lot to love but this game runs like ****

Funny game with amazing battles, but it feels incomplete. I expected something better. A step back compared with NMH2.

I bought NHM 3 on launch. I had to force myself to finish it. It's such so bugged out and unpolished. I have no idea why they got rid of the "Beat-em-up" sections I liked so much at each rankings... Instead it's just a mindless "go to fight spot x y and z, kill, repeat 5 times, boss fight". The boss fights are hit and miss for me. Some we're fun and original, some we're such a pain. What saves the whole thing is the artistical direction which was on part with the other.

I got soft locked twice in the game, both during battles. Had to restart the whole game... great. The FPS in this game is a joke... goes from 15 to 30. Unbelievable in 2021 even on the Switch. I remember playing Astral chain - the game looked similar and seemed to be a constant 30 fps.

The parts between bosses just feels like such a chore. Those zones are so big and empty (especially 3-4-5): It really feels like they we're onto something but just scratched it out for some reason (Beat-em-up phases?)

In all honesty, I think they should of just kept the same graphical level as the first 2 game. It didn't even age that bad from what I saw on the Switch versions. I certainly would not have minded if it meant having a constant 60 fps - hell alone a 30-45 FPS.

I'm giving this a very generous 6. I have a hard time believing the people who gave this a higher score played the same game as me.

    The bad:
The best thing is that Travis hadn't tried to come back (again) after the disastrous game where he supposedly came back and it was embarrassing, this game is even more embarrassing. It's a game that feels old, like the Wii/X360/PS3 generation. The aesthetics by keeping it old-fashioned makes the game look horrible except in certain close ups in which the textures go for a walk and disappear. The graphic section is inconsistent in some parts, it looks acceptable in others, horrifying. The Quick Time Events (QTE) are still there, which shows that the gameplay has not advanced a day. The recurring jokes of the series are there but we have already seen them in previous games so they will only get a smile the first time and maybe a Ha.

    The Meh!:
It's sad to see Grasshoper stuck in the past. It is confirmed (as I said in the review of Travis Strike Again: No More Heroes) that the previous game was only made to get money from the fans since it did not bring anything new to the saga and was just a constant repetition of what already happened. seen in this saga and others that haunt Nintendo consoles. Yes, it is a game for fans, which is something that directly clashes with the description of the game where it says that it returns after 10 years (we return to the same ones that Travis Trike Again did not count) so my question is how many true fans of No More Heroes are really left? And if true fans or some curious/clueless person out there who buys the game by mistake, will that be enough for a next game to exist?

If I have to be honest, for me this game is disappointment. 1 and 2 were classic. Things I dislike about 3 are so many...
First, you ruined Travis look. He looks old and fat. His hair seems made of plastic, all this for a few small details like skin, teeth, we could live without this!
Too bright colors and titles made my eyes ache. Game is loading too slow on Switch. His cat is a male

I finished the game just to follow the story. No pleasure gained from playing it. You ruined the essence.
And why you always change the controls? Hard to get used to something after you change it every since in a while!

No More Heroes is yet another franchise I’ve always had an interest in but never got the chance to play until now. There was no way my Mom would let me play the first 2 games at my age back then lol, so they just escaped my mind for the longest time after that until I got the chance to try out NMH III. So this game is pretty damn fun despite some glaring flaws. Positives first; the soundtrack SLAPS & I NEED to download the full thing on YouTube for my workout sessions. The story is insanity personified honestly, I really don’t know how to make sense of it so I won’t & will enjoy it for what it was! I’ve heard even an extensive knowledge on the NMH games that came before can only help so much here, so I don’t feel as lost as I thought I would’ve. I’m sure some of the story beats would’ve hit harder had I played the first 2 (3? If you count Travis Strikes Again), so that’s obviously on me. It’s still off the walls enjoyable to a complete NMH stranger like myself & it truly felt like conquering impossible odds going through the story. The combat is awesome too! I’m still shocked that the weak Switch can even hit 60fps but it RARELY fell below 60 during a fight for me. I also appreciate how i almost never had to grind for money, something the reviewers said was a big issue but it’s really non existent if you do all the designated matches before bosses lol. Almost all of the big bosses themselves are AWESOME spectacles too, but some were better than others. But this is where we have to get into the downsides, which will start with the combat unfortunately. I stand by it being fun as hell, but it did kind of get repetitive towards the very end, and it didn’t help that the enemy variety is pretty slim. I’m talking the last 2 hours here, but for the whole game you’ll be fighting different combinations of the same enemies over and over. A little more variety would’ve been welcome, kind of a minor issue for me personally but I can see others growing tired of it quicker than I did. I also REALLY didn’t like the Deathman arcade game you had to play during the story, it was only twice but it was annoying & pace shattering. Yes the story is all over the place, I think that’s by design but it doesn’t help make a super memorable story. It was entertaining like I said, but nothing fantastic. But the biggest problem everyone has with this game from what I’ve seen is the performance & open world. I understand art styles but this game looks downright UGLY a lot of the time. I get it’s not a big AAA game but damn, it looks straight off the Wii at times! The open world is pretty bad too, besides being empty and virtually lifeless, it’s just ugly to look at. Especially the extremely grainy war torn area, it’s not good when your game is hurting your players’ eyes just looking at it. The grain goes away during the cutscenes of that area so that begs the question of why the hell it was there in the first place. The open world barely hits 30fps riding around on your motorbike, going from the smooth 60fps combat to the sluggish 20fps of the open world is jarring to say the least. There’s nothing completely game breaking here, but there’s enough flaws to justify saying this game needs some serious polishing in certain areas. But the game ends on a very interesting note & I will be tuned in to see what the future of NMH becomes, and will possibly be diving into the past games to see what makes this series so special to so many. And yes, to partially make some sense of the story I witnessed lol. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a new fan of nmh shortly before playing this game. I bought the first two titles on switch in preparation for the third and my time has been largely enjoyable. NMH 3 is by far my favorite title, but I feel like there were many missed opportunities. Its a bit of a one step forward, two steps back situation.

NMH 3 has a proper antagonist in FU, which made the game more enjoyable from a story standpoint compared to the first two games. I really enjoyed the deathglove skills and creating deathglove chips, I think it did a lot for the combat and is a highlight for me. The mini games are fun this time around, the music is great, and the combat is quite addicting. Being able to rematch bosses at higher difficulties for better rewards is an excellent addition, it is something that I have utilized heavily in order to grind rarer components to make stronger deathglove chips.

My main problem with this game is the lack of custimization. I miss being able to change every part of travis' clothes from NMH 2, or being able to get new katanas like in the first two games. I also feel that the pacing is off. The majority of deathglove skills are obtained all at once, the game could have benefited from having more deathglove skills and having them being unlockable one at a time. I think it would have been cooler to give a large selection of deathglove skills and allow the player to mix and match. I also feel that the combo system in nmh 2 was superior to nhm 3. Being able to mix in physical attacks with katana slashes did a lot to keep the combat from getting too stale in nmh2 and is something I have missed in the finale. I also think the lack of stores in nmh3 renders the open world pointless. It was fun to drive around for a while and see the different sections of the cities but it got boring for me relatively quickly. The game is also a bit buggy and suffers from fps drops, glaring pop-ins, and slow texture loading. My final complaint is that it is far too easy to max out Travis skills and stats, which brings me to my conclusion.
All in all NMH3 is a wonderful time, but my main complaints come from not having enough of the game! I wanted more customization options like clothes, katanas, and deathglove skills. I wanted more progression in the form of a deeper upgrade tree and combat skills. Lastly, I wanted more to do in the overworld, going from ufo to ufo in order to participate in a ranked fight became more of a chore than anything - the combat is fun, but the way in which combat is facilitated could have used some more work.

NMH3 is by no means a bad game, in fact its quite the opposite, I just think there were several missed opportunities that would have really propelled this game to legendary status.

This is definitely a No More Heroes game, fans of the series should absolutely give this a playthrough. That being said, it is a very difficult game to review. But the amazing style and characters would come through a lot better if the game wasn't so difficult to look at and ran smooth. Anyone that saw me playing the game asked when it came out and didn't believe it was a new game, and the load times in between almost every segment made it tiresome to pick up and play sometimes. Despite that, the combat still feels great, though I miss my different weapon options from NMH2, but the combat overall feels more varied with and a little more strategic. However, the actual bossfights in this bossrush game lack the same punch as the first two games. Depending on some RNG elements, you could slip through a boss without even seeing what they have to offer, or get stuck dying to the same attacks that are cumbersome to circumvent. I often found myself getting more satisfaction out of the smaller 'fodder' battles than the actual bossfights. The minigames, especially compared to NMH2, leave a lot to be desired and a lot of the collectibles felt more like a chore (which might be on purpose). But this game is still very much worth a playthrough just for the overflowing style and the weird ride it takes you on. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. tl;dr on gameplay:
if it were the bosses only, it'd be a 7 or 8
if it were everything but the bosses, it'd be a 4 (or lower: ***the performance issues, while isolated to the overworld, are inexcusable***)

I played through on Spicy with a mix of the joycons and pro controller. I tried out all of the minigames/submissions, but did not work through level 3 on all volunteer locations. All of the bosses are cleared S or SS on Carolina Reaper. I cut the collectible hunt short due to the performance issues (the framerate paired with a widescreen TV was giving me a headache).

    Good:
-Controls function as they should, inputs feel responsive (both in combat and in the overworld).
-Boss fights are well-balanced, if not in favor of the player (especially on lower difficulties); overall they're pretty fun and are a high point of the game.
-The story doesn't take itself too seriously, which lends itself well to the boss-oriented structure of the game.
-None of the music is underwhelming, and several tracks are good enough to warrant listening to even if you disliked the game ("Musical Chairs," "ITADAKIMASU," and "Octopus (Deadly Seppun)" come to mind).
-Mastering the gameplay is a rewarding experience throughout the course of the story and, to a lesser extent, when returning to the bosses.

    Mixed:
-Some of the designated battles (blips of enemies between the bosses) felt plainly imbalanced. Maybe I'm just missing something, but dialing things back to an excessively passive playstyle was a huge intrusion.
-Volunteer missions were a slog, but maybe that's the point? I never found myself required to do them, likely as a result of aiming for higher ranks, but given the dreadful state of the overworld, I'm glad I could get in and get out without much delay.
-Humor is very hit and miss. Sometimes I'd find myself smiling and chuckling, while other times my only reaction was "I get it, Suda, thanks." Your mileage may vary; the sequence that served as the punchline to the Miike dialogue and the entire post-FU sequence made me smile pretty wide.
-Effectively 4 (I think) bosses are fanservice stand-ins for the aliens. The pacing relies on anticipation during the mediocre overworld segments, however, so not being familiar with the stand-ins would be a very poor experience. Having played previous titles, I enjoyed the lot of them, but it's some pacing whiplash in the worst way if the player hasn't played the previous titles.

    Bad:
-I would've easily given NMH3 7.5-8 points if not for the god awful framerate and visual issues in the overworld. The framerate will very regularly dip to sub-20 FPS despite the low-poly, low-detail overworld. Several of the islands are outright barren and still have framerate issues.
-The collectibles and the system for obtaining t-shirts also suffers greatly due to the state of the overworld.
-The only discernible differences between the difficulties of boss fights is an increased health pool and damage, so most of the high-difficulty bosses are just a test of the player's patience.

It's a solid 6/10 game; no more, no less. The combat is pretty fun, but the rest of the game is a mess. Yeah, they were a bit Dynasty Warrior-esque with how easily you could mow through most of the enemies, but that was kind of the appeal. You felt a sense of progression as you moved through these custom-built levels towards the bosses. The hub world was empty, but at least this was at a time where hub worlds generally weren't THAT full of life. It was *somewhat* excusable as a sort of tongue-in-cheek joke at the time.

NMH3 is what I would call a fan disservice. It's such a blatantly lazy game. There's no attention to detail whatsoever, and it's obvious from the very first time you get the "press A button to open the beam katana" prompt. There's no fluidity whatsoever. I was never able to get it to open in a fluid motion. There was always a slight pause between Travis drawing the katana, and then pressing A to open it, where Travis kind of just stands motionless and awkwardly because the creators couldn't even get this EXTREMELY basic game-feel down right! It would be SUCH a satisfying thing to draw the katana perfectly without that obnoxious pause. And yes, this is a minor thing, but the game is PLAGUED with these "minor things" -- these relics of bad game design that most games had weeded out in the 2010s: collectables that aren't tracked, ultra rare drops that require you complete the same boss dozens of times on the hardest instakill mode to get, the same, boring battles over and over again with mobs on the same overworld map rather than purpose-built stages, a 40 minute self-indulgent cutscene sequence at the start of the game that's an absolute chore to watch, with characters we've LONG stopped caring about (or even forgotten), with terrible writing, horrible CGI, more self-indulgent "Miike is so great he's my hero" obnoxious fanboyism between each set, things that were forced into the game just because they felt like they had to be, and were then handled in the absolute worst way possible (Henry Cooldown), and a STILL-EMPTY overworld map that performs like piss in 2021. There's no excuse for it. This would've been a decent Gamecube game back in the day, but now it's a dusty, shoddy relic of a time long-forgotten.

The combat is very meaty, boss fights are properly varied and the absurd story is one of the strongest points of the game. However, No More Heroes III is very uneven and got stuck in the past decade both in terms of gameplay and design. Actually, the series regressed in some aspects. Goichi Suda obviously ran out of ideas an is chasing his own tail. [11/2021, p.62]

Travis Touchdown has grown in his “final installment” of No More Heroes. Because of this, the overall game has a different feel than previous entries and might be why it’s my favorite game in the franchise. Travis is a much more likeable character with some tangible realizations of action’s consequences. Paired with an interesting story, this makes No More Heroes 3 the best entry in the series. If you are a fan, No More Heroes 3 should definitely be added to your library.
