If you liked the first 2 games you will love the 3rd. The humour writing characters are all on point and this game is just a roller coaster ride of Japanese weirdness.
Yes the game isnt like fortnite or COD , the gameplay switches up now and then to keep thing fresh. This will no doubt upset the journalist reviewer that complain games are to hard. But it really not that bad learning

This game isn't always perfect but everything is filled with love every touch is filled with Meaning this game every step of the way blew me away. This is a game made by a team that loved everything they made and you can feel it. Its so rare to find a game with so much love and care put into every little detail. I honestly haven't played a game in years that made me feel so much like id feel sad when i was meant to' happy when meant to ect' everything landed perfectly on the story side.

And on the fun side (the most important thing in a game lets be honest) its great i was smiling the whole time always something fun to do or see. i loved nmh1 and 2 but i LOVE nmh3 this game will be put back into my switch yearly (if not weekly) for a long long time.

Now i can't say all good so lets just say the bad and get it over with. fps and pop in can be a problem but they never pop up in combat the devs knew where the focus should be and honestly its better than nmh1's open world fps so if you were fine with that you'll be more than fine with this. oh ya arts really good but do i even need to say that.

What makes the 1st game so great to me was that it's story is the most compelling, and the style is unparalleled. NMH1's story managed to be grounded in reality while being insane at times, and it had a distinct look which worked for it.

The 3rd game is probably the least grounded in reality (as you can tell by the colorful aliens) and unfortunately for me, the customization is probably the weakest in the series (not including TSA). Some people have complaints about the art direction, but even though I liked when it was more cell shaded I still think the game looks nice.

However, the game's story kept me entertained the whole way through. The comedy in this game is the strongest in the series, like Suda knows exactly what buttons to push to get a kick out of you. While the story isn't nearly as thought provoking, I had a smile on my face for the whole thing.

Finally, I gotta mention the music. Its gone away a bit from rock sound of the 2nd game and went with more of an electronic soundtrack, but thats not a downside to me at all. It fits the futuristic setting and fits the game's moments. Calm/relaxed when theres downtime and upbeat/intense when there's action. Wouldn't have it done any other way. On a smaller note the combat is pretty fun too but I don't have as much to say about it since its similar enough to the previous games.

Overall, I definitely recommend this if you're a fan of the series. If you're a newcomer, you might wanna start with the earlier games, and if you skipped Travis Strikes Again, then maybe watch the dialogue scenes if you don't wanna be confused about sudden developments that came from there.

While I'm not sure if creator SUDA51 has achieved the title of genius, at least not yet, one must commend his way of making games, unrefined but with a lot of heart and passion kind of games.

The story takes place 9 years after the events of NMH2 and apparently 2 years after Travis Strikes Again, Santa Destroy has been invaded by space pirates led by the once cute and seemingly harmless Jess Baptiste VI A.K.A. FU.

Although the narrative has more cohesion, it is also divided by episodes, literally, episodes with an opening and ending song (both of which are great by the way), these episodes are more or less self-contained stories which is not a bad idea but it is also a double-edged sword since it still separates the main narrative albeit less than the other games.

It is worth noting that NMH 3 it’s more a sequel to Travis Strike Again than NMH 2 or at least that is my perception as I didn’t and regrettably haven’t played TSA. The story has many key throwbacks to TSA and a few to the numbered entries. If you played TSA then you’ll be rewarded by having faith in Grasshopper and expect some important twists related to that game.

NMH 3 maintains the simple yet satisfying combat introduced in NMH 1, you have two types of attacks, light and heavy which can be used to connect pretty basic combos and once you completed a full combo the screen will prompt you to use motion controls to simulate a final slash, this slash was satisfying in NMH 1 and 2, and it is still quite satisfying in 3. It’s possible to change the motion controls if you don’t fancy them but I highly recommend keeping them.

The main dish in this course are the boss fights, they always have been the center of NMH and they still are, every single one of them introduces a new boss with quite different mechanics and gameplay options, some of them have several phases but every one of them surpass your expectations and makes you want to meet the next fight as soon as possible, they make you forget the repetitive process of accessing them, so I assume a big part of the budget and resources were used in them.

One thing the game excels at and isn’t debatable for me is its amazing presentation and art direction. From the very beginning when the game starts with a 2D mockup game in Beat em’ up fashion and right after that a beautiful and stylish animation kicks in about FU and Damon, from the tutorial cards and its classic bathroom saving scenery, it is just wonderful. The surprises don’t end just there as each chapter comes in with its own pieces of stylization, and every time a new graphic style comes in it is hard to not be smiling all the way through.

Another highlight from the series is its music, same as the game and maybe Grasshopper philosophy too. It has a renegade/punk spirit that it’s hard to overlook, it doesn’t have a song with the iconic NMH 1 theme but it’s filled with leitmotifs here and there. The music’s so versatile that you also wonder what will be the next tune to hear. Maybe I’m over-excited about the soundtrack but it might be my favorite from the series.

Sadly NMH3 only features an English dub, it has been this way since the start of the series but I was hoping this time around we Westerners could choose between Japanese or English VA. The result it's in line with the previous entries of the series which might sound great if you liked it, I sure like it back then when I was younger, however, the game has an over the top quality while going from whimsical to serious in many scenes, and it's on the darker more serious parts where the acting seems to miss the mark by far, in general, they sound more like caricatures than characters and that killed the mood of many scenes for me, serious or not.

No More Heroes 3 still struggles to be an overall great game but it also delivers in different aspects, I don’t think I have played a game as committed with its style as this one. Some of its parts could be tainted with budget restrictions or questionable acting but I didn’t encounter any dull moment in my entire Spicy 23-hour campaign, it is rough around the edges but its edges are quite sharp. Goichi Suda stated that this would mark the end of Travis story for the time being to focus on creating new IPs that belong to Grasshopper and that could be a good thing, maybe 10 years later when the team has acquired more experience still we could finally see a less limited version of what their vision is for NMH 3, but for the time being, it is a satisfying conclusion for the series.

The Open World: the open world isn't that great, but it has some charm to it. There's not much to explore and its filled with side-missions and collectables. It's definitely better than NMH1, but not by much. The new mini-games, side missions, and new wave-like missions are a nice touch but aren't all that interesting and fun. The new enemies in this game are very unique and fun to fight against compared to previous games. The new mechanics such as Death chips, Death Glove Chips, and new Full Armor Travis are nice additions. They make the combat insanely fun.

The story is quite shallow and works more like a sequel to Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, than to a sequel to No More Heroes 2. It's a great conclusion to the series, but feels a bit rushed at times. But overall, it was a nice conclusion to the No More Heroes franchise.

Nitpicks and some Criticism: many of the plotlines and such felt shoved in at the last moment. Open world is dull and boring, but they tried to make it fun. We were given a bunch of exposition, but it was never explained. Anways! It's a great final entry in this weird series, and I can't believe it's already over.

Expand

The transitions, the animations, the soundtrack, I literally wanted to cry. I've waited 11 years for this and it is everything I could have dreamed of. The game is gorgeous, UE4 shines in my opinion, of course it has the strange texture load in that is present in any game running on this engine, but they optimized graphics in very interesting ways. The game focuses on the most important scenes at all times and makes sure they look amazing, you lose quality into the distance, but for me it was only noticeable in the open world......but even then the open world "technical issues" are not present, at least from my point of view, also the frame rate seems to be locked at 30... (texture pop-in, but it fixes itself and that doesn't bother me personally). I take into account that the Switch internal hardware can only be pushed so far and Suda's team did an amazing job with optimizing performance in the open world...It feels the opposite of dead and empty, it feels ALIVE. Look at the amount of detail in this world vs. the first, the huge freaking space ship constantly hovering in the sky and the several different locations you can now visit. It's honestly a bit overwhelming! But in the best way possible. I cannot wait to keep playing this game, it's literally all I have thought about since I began. The combat btw, PHENOMENAL, Suda and team have out done themselves, it truly feels like Travis has finally found his groove as an assassin and he is not afraid to show it. Once you get a handle on the controls, combat is so fluid (the frame rate truly shines here with what feels like a locked 60 fps) and the pumping soundtrack makes you want to find the next battle! Seriously, if you are a fan of Grasshopper Manufacture's games, this is the best one they have made to date. It's the best No More Heroes game and Travis's final chapter in the saga. Do yourself a favor and pick this up!!!

UPDATE: I love how each boss is set up like an episode, it makes the game more fun to play in segments. You can divide it up like you are watching a TV series, (If you are anything like me, I cannot focus long so it drives incentive for me to play each week.) On top of that, the Intro and Outro videos are perfect, the songs are perfect. (The entire soundtrack rocks)

I'm a huge fan of the series but even with fanboy goggles idk how you could excuse this game even on a technical level, never mind the awful story(even when compared to the other games) and mind-numbingly boring combat. There's a few good boss fights but this is easily the weakest of the trilogy.

The open world performance might actually be worse than the original because the pop in and frame rate drops are far more frequent than 1 which ran pretty smooth for a wii game but 3 has no excuse given its on more advanced technology. Id be more forgiving of the open world if it was more than just a retread of the first game but it isn't, you'll be doing the same padded out gameplay as before only not as charming because its just more of the same.

The combat is honestly pretty garbage and kind of proves that most people praising it never played the original games. The low/high stance mechanic has been replaced with a generic light/heavy attack move set that gets old very quickly. The game also introduces cooldown abilities which just shows how the devs are trying to appeal to morons who need to spam things like the deathglove to win.

And the story, hooo boy what a heap of garbage. Further proof that the "gamers" praising it never played the first 2 games because if they did then it would be obvious how much NMH3 jumps the shark from a writing standpoint. Now I know what those who were dropped at a young age will probably say, "bUt dA FiRsT GaEmZ WeR SiLLy ToO" but what they fail to understand is that the originals were gradual in their absurdity, they built up to their moments where as 3 blows its load right from the start. Beyond the Intro cutscene the game is in a constant downward spiral of references to past games, 4th wall breaking that stopped being funny a while ago, and cutscenes that never know when to stop

The music is easily the worst of the trilogy, I had high hopes after hearing that red orca was a track until I found out they butchered the best part of the song and that it was the only memorable piece of music in the entire game. None of the other tracks stood out to me.

Bottom line: this is the third game in a series that does very little to innovate from the previous entries and in stead opts to retread the same territory of the first game while repeating the same mistakes. If you're a binary thinking monkey who enjoys "LOL so randum!" type humor then you will probably clap your hands at the funny things/pretty colors on screen but if you're a dedicated fan of the series and wanted to see anything other than more of the same then you'll be left out in the cold.

When I first heard no more heroes 3 I was excited. I loved the previous games (yes even Travis strikes again) but I knew that a new nmh had alot to live up to. Unfortunately nmh3 is a very mediocre title and doesn't hold a candle to the greatness of the first two games. Before I talk about the negatives (oh boy there's a bunch) I will talk about the positives. The art style of the previous games has been retained and improved as was to be expected for a game running on unreal engine 4. The smooth celshading especially the character models is gorgeous. The environments and drab open world.. not so much. The visual effects light up the screen and dead aliens burst with rainbow colors overall it's a pretty game aside from the open world. The sound design is great and the original voice actors return to deliver their lines which Is nice. Attacks feel and sound powerful so it's very satisfying to hammer away at foes. The combat is definitely one of the better aspects of this title. The frame rate sustains a solid enough 60fps with very few drops during combat. Only downside to combat is that battles can drag and after awhile your doing the same combos and hearing Travis name every berry known to man over and over again. Repetition sets in but atleast the combat is fun for the most part. another positive aspect of combat is the boss battles. Almost all of the bosses have their own theme and gimmick aside from two or three horrible bosses. These change the game up and some actually surprised me. The two or three that aren't particularly entertaining can be a bit of a slog you'll want to get through asap. The cutscenes are very nice and kept me entertained even though the story made no since whatsoever. Now that's all the big positives I can give for this so let's talk about the negatives. Where to begin. The thing I can't comprehend is why the developer got rid of actual stages and the 4 or 5 different beam katana that were in the first two games. It makes the repetition all the more noticeable since you have no new weapon types or combo styles to utilize. It's a huge bummer considering the first two had this yet it's missing here. Stages are gone and replaced with random battles or as there called "designated battles" which teleport you in a small arena like area with the same enemy types over and over and over again. What makes this even worse is that before you can go up against the boss you have to complete 3 of these boring battles and pay the nominal assassin fee to qualify for the boss fight. It's not too hard getting the main currency you need because the designated battles you win nets you plenty of cash to pay the fee. I hardly had to even mess with the various side jobs for coin. The next complaint I'm going to talk about is the open world. When I first saw it I thought cool it's bigger than the first but boy was I wrong! The map is split up into 5 different sections. Santa destroy being one and the other being perfect world. The other three are basically vast wastelands with activities and markers feeling the area. On in particular call of battle is awful with an ugly filter and muggy look with invisible walls galore which made navigating a pain. No love went into making this boring open world and it shows. There are some areas on the overall map that are marked in red whixh you can't access. These areas have no point whatsoever and make the game world feel unfinished. No love was out into creating this open world developer grasshopper manufacture just brought it back because fans complained it was absent in nmh2. The final complaint I will talk about is the damage output and damage sponge enemies. Now this is in my experience which I played on the hardest difficulty but my attacks felt like they weren't doing a damn thing. Enemies have way to much health and whittling down their health bars got tiresome throughout my playtime. Unlike previous games where battles felt quick and fast in this game they drag on and on and tested my patience. The combats fun but my fun drastically decreased with each overlong battle.
I really wanted to like this game. I loved the previous titles and suda's other work but this is not how you return to a beloved cult classic. The missing features and repetive gameplay really drag down what could've been a great title. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. This game just did not keep me entertained. It pushed my patience to it's limit and when I finally beat it I was thankful it was over. Hopefully it will get dlc or patches that add new weapons or expansions to flesh the game out more but I'm not holding my breath. This was definitely the weakest title in the series. It had some good positives but unfortunately the negatives outweigh damn near every one of them.

Suda51 gave us the best no more heroes formula in this game! a healthy balance of grinding for money and fighting between the boss fights, aspects that nmh1 and 2 either exceed or lack. Good gameplay, story, art and music as always, the graphics are a little janky and the textures are always popping in your face, but being a Suda51 game this is part of the charm. Good game.

Its is not a perfect game by any means,it definetly has some janky parts("open" world looks like a parody on modern AAAA games crafted by Ubisoft and their collegues).
But combat is best in the series and plot is hillariosly over-the-top(Sylvia is Captain Marvel now, dunno why or how).

Honestly, the game is below average. It would be a really good game for a £20-£30 pricepoint, even then it would have severe flaws.

The Story doesn't really go anywhere - It's not even particularly artsy. Which is something I can forgive for good gameplay - Which is a mixed bag. At a base level the combat is fun, smooth - The problem is that in the 3rd boss you get all the upgrades

The Story doesn't really go anywhere - It's not even particularly artsy. Which is something I can forgive for good gameplay - Which is a mixed bag.

At a base level the combat is fun, smooth - The problem is that in the 3rd boss you get all the upgrades at once. Which means that combat is pretty much the same for the whole game - And even with these upgrades it's not that different from combat in chapter 1-3.

The characters are interesting, but the game doesn't really do anything with it. - And also the end of the game is pointless, the end is so dissapointing, the only thing is really does is serve as sequel bait.

Then there is the open world. It's awful, it's got a slow framerate which i can look over, but the big issue is that there is nothing there - It's just a slog to get through the open world when you just want to do the bosses.

The game is overplayed by rose tinted glasses of fans, but if you're not a fan then it's a middling experience. I can't say that the flaws of the game are just "Suda 51 jank that adds to the charm of the game" and the bad open world isn't forgiven with the artsy excuse of "It's a metanarrative example of the issues of open worlds in gaming" - They're just flaws, plain and simple.

If you're not already a big fan of the series, or if you're just a casual enjoyer of the series I really would not recommend buying for full price.

Cult game director Goichi Suda a.k.a. "Suda51" has made a name for himself over the years by putting out a variety of eccentric titles with a one of a kind punk rock style. What's kept him from breaking out into mainstream success however is that the gameplay of his projects has never quite matched their personality. "Suda51" has made a name for himself over the years by putting out a variety of eccentric titles with a one of a kind punk rock style. What's kept him from breaking out into mainstream success however is that the gameplay of his projects has never quite matched their personality. Well, in the 11 years since we received the last mainline No More Heroes entry, it's clear Suda used the time to iron out all of the faults and deliver something that will finally allow a much wider range of gamers to embrace his madness.

Rest assured, things are just as delightfully wild as ever. I missed the grindhouse vibes and sexuality of its predecessors, but III's new more lighthearted tone that parodies stuff like today's superhero blockbuster obsessed culture somehow ups the levels of creativity, absurdity, and unpredictability. There are a plethora of inventive one-off oddball scenarios and the series' typical brand of vulgar, violent fourth wall breaking humor to ensure you never know what's coming next. Only now all the wackiness is supported by some of the best hack and slash action around.

This has always kind of been a boss rush franchise where the goal is to take out a collection of memorable psychopaths to make it through the story. These challenging encounters are what carried the prior two (and a half) entries in the trilogy, and that's no different here. Where this third chapter improves though is in the downtime spent in-between each big showdown. Once again you'll need to raise funds in order to access the next fight, and there are a number of ways to do so from "Designated Matches" against the (surprisingly difficult) basic enemy types to odd-jobs. Even the most menial tasks like grass mowing or unclogging toilets are unexpectedly fun and Suda at long last figured out how to make the open-world all of this takes place in interesting by littering the map with objective markers, side quests, and hidden collectibles.

The combat itself also flows much smoother than it did on the Wii due to not having to put up with that consoles awkward control scheme. It reminded of what a revelation I found Heroes Paradise on the PS3 to be. You have a mix of light and heavy attacks, returning "Death Glove" powers that run on a timer from Travis Strikes Again, a gauge that determines the strength of your combos depending on how well you perform, and unique abilities like being able to slow down time after pulling off a perfect dodge. All of which come together to create a complex system with a lot of options. You can even upgrade your base stats with a secondary currency (which is basically just EXP) gained from missions meaning that character progression is deeper than simply grinding to buy a new beam katana.

All of this makes No More Heroes III the most polished and complete effort from Grasshopper Manufacture to date. I'm not going to lie and say everything is perfect. You can tell there are some aspects that suffer from budgetary constraints, such as the lack of compelling rewards for completing the secondary tasks. Yet, Suda's imagination is in top form to deliver a vision more memorable and gonzo nuts than ever before, and with the always enjoyable test of clashing with bosses being surrounded by stronger supporting content than any time prior there's truly no reason to not give one of Japan's particularly intriguing distinctive minds a well-deserved chance, whether it be once again or as your very first experience.

I bought NHM 3 on launch. I had to force myself to finish it. It's such so bugged out and unpolished. I have no idea why they got rid of the "Beat-em-up" sections I liked so much at each rankings... Instead it's just a mindless "go to fight spot x y and z, kill, repeat 5 times, boss fight". The boss fights are hit and miss for me. Some we're fun and original, some we're such a pain. What saves the whole thing is the artistical direction which was on part with the other.

I got soft locked twice in the game, both during battles. Had to restart the whole game... great. The FPS in this game is a joke... goes from 15 to 30. Unbelievable in 2021 even on the Switch. I remember playing Astral chain - the game looked similar and seemed to be a constant 30 fps.

The parts between bosses just feels like such a chore. Those zones are so big and empty (especially 3-4-5): It really feels like they we're onto something but just scratched it out for some reason (Beat-em-up phases?)

In all honesty, I think they should of just kept the same graphical level as the first 2 game. It didn't even age that bad from what I saw on the Switch versions. I certainly would not have minded if it meant having a constant 60 fps - hell alone a 30-45 FPS.

I'm giving this a very generous 6. I have a hard time believing the people who gave this a higher score played the same game as me.

    The bad:
The best thing is that Travis hadn't tried to come back (again) after the disastrous game where he supposedly came back and it was embarrassing, this game is even more embarrassing. It's a game that feels old, like the Wii/X360/PS3 generation. The aesthetics by keeping it old-fashioned makes the game look horrible except in certain close ups in which the textures go for a walk and disappear. The graphic section is inconsistent in some parts, it looks acceptable in others, horrifying. The Quick Time Events (QTE) are still there, which shows that the gameplay has not advanced a day. The recurring jokes of the series are there but we have already seen them in previous games so they will only get a smile the first time and maybe a Ha.

    The Meh!:
It's sad to see Grasshoper stuck in the past. It is confirmed (as I said in the review of Travis Strike Again: No More Heroes) that the previous game was only made to get money from the fans since it did not bring anything new to the saga and was just a constant repetition of what already happened. seen in this saga and others that haunt Nintendo consoles. Yes, it is a game for fans, which is something that directly clashes with the description of the game where it says that it returns after 10 years (we return to the same ones that Travis Trike Again did not count) so my question is how many true fans of No More Heroes are really left? And if true fans or some curious/clueless person out there who buys the game by mistake, will that be enough for a next game to exist?

This paired alongside incredible gameplay, music, and style. This game is hype.

it is a short game that has high replayability. Fans the series will appreciate the title but i feel like it could have had more to it. Travis is still a good character and Robin Atkin Downes still delivers.

the lack of actual linear levels leading to bosses like the other games was odd to have absent, instead the player clear 3 challenge levels before fighting a boss.

Some character stuff was really odd like a previous character for some unknown reason is now a tree (naomi) ?? the game also really misses an oppertunity to do more with its other characters like Shinobu and Bad girl who seemed like she would have a larger part.

The Alien bosses are different but were mostly still good boss battles. The cartoonish intro cutscene introducing the main antagonist was great but ultimately the main villan could have been fleshed out a bit more

NMH3 is a treat for fans of the series never forgets it is a video game. It's fun, the music is just incredible, and combat is improved. The meta-design of the game is hilarious, like sidekick Jean the cat having a kick-ass voice, Naomi's secret high tech lab, and the hero showing he is a dork. It also has the best reversible cover ever - Goddam Superhero the video game!

I absolutely love No More Heroes as a franchise.
On paper the games make no sense, and you can easily find numerous flaws with the game itself, be it the empty open world or the tedium of the activities containted within it. But none of that matters when it comes to No More Heroes 3. The game just oozes style, to the point where everything and anything I would do would feel delightful.

I don't think it has the musicla score of No More Heroes 2, although some tracks do hold up, nor did I enjoy the gameplay variety as much as I did in NMH2, but it feels as though Suda51 and the team took all their ideas from NMH1, and polished them to perfection before releasing it on a new console.
I will say I certainly recommend playing with motion controls. NMH as a franchise never quite measured up to other contemporary hack n slash titans like Bayonetta or DMC when it came to combo variety and mechanical depth, but it has always excelled at providing a visceral and engaging experience despite that, making up for it with style and flavour, and the act of doing the motions for all of Travis' coolest attacks absolutely accentuated the experience for me.
You're gonna like this game if you like Suda51. If you don't like Suda's games it may not be for you, so I'd advise you do a little research and see if this is the type of thing to appeal to you. Overall a solid experience that didn't quite live up to its predecessor for me, but was absolutely worth playing regardless.

No More Heroes is yet another franchise I’ve always had an interest in but never got the chance to play until now. There was no way my Mom would let me play the first 2 games at my age back then lol, so they just escaped my mind for the longest time after that until I got the chance to try out NMH III. There was no way my Mom would let me play the first 2 games at my age back then lol, so they just escaped my mind for the longest time after that until I got the chance to try out NMH III. So this game is pretty damn fun despite some glaring flaws. Positives first; the soundtrack SLAPS & I NEED to download the full thing on YouTube for my workout sessions. The story is insanity personified honestly, I really don’t know how to make sense of it so I won’t & will enjoy it for what it was! I’ve heard even an extensive knowledge on the NMH games that came before can only help so much here, so I don’t feel as lost as I thought I would’ve. I’m sure some of the story beats would’ve hit harder had I played the first 2 (3? If you count Travis Strikes Again), so that’s obviously on me. It’s still off the walls enjoyable to a complete NMH stranger like myself & it truly felt like conquering impossible odds going through the story. The combat is awesome too! I’m still shocked that the weak Switch can even hit 60fps but it RARELY fell below 60 during a fight for me. I also appreciate how i almost never had to grind for money, something the reviewers said was a big issue but it’s really non existent if you do all the designated matches before bosses lol. Almost all of the big bosses themselves are AWESOME spectacles too, but some were better than others. But this is where we have to get into the downsides, which will start with the combat unfortunately. I stand by it being fun as hell, but it did kind of get repetitive towards the very end, and it didn’t help that the enemy variety is pretty slim. I’m talking the last 2 hours here, but for the whole game you’ll be fighting different combinations of the same enemies over and over. A little more variety would’ve been welcome, kind of a minor issue for me personally but I can see others growing tired of it quicker than I did. I also REALLY didn’t like the Deathman arcade game you had to play during the story, it was only twice but it was annoying & pace shattering. Yes the story is all over the place, I think that’s by design but it doesn’t help make a super memorable story. It was entertaining like I said, but nothing fantastic. But the biggest problem everyone has with this game from what I’ve seen is the performance & open world. I understand art styles but this game looks downright UGLY a lot of the time. I get it’s not a big AAA game but damn, it looks straight off the Wii at times! The open world is pretty bad too, besides being empty and virtually lifeless, it’s just ugly to look at. Especially the extremely grainy war torn area, it’s not good when your game is hurting your players’ eyes just looking at it. The grain goes away during the cutscenes of that area so that begs the question of why the hell it was there in the first place. The open world barely hits 30fps riding around on your motorbike, going from the smooth 60fps combat to the sluggish 20fps of the open world is jarring to say the least. There’s nothing completely game breaking here, but there’s enough flaws to justify saying this game needs some serious polishing in certain areas. But the game ends on a very interesting note & I will be tuned in to see what the future of NMH becomes, and will possibly be diving into the past games to see what makes this series so special to so many. And yes, to partially make some sense of the story I witnessed lol. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a new fan of nmh shortly before playing this game. I bought the first two titles on switch in preparation for the third and my time has been largely enjoyable. NMH 3 is by far my favorite title, but I feel like there were many missed opportunities. Its a bit of a one step forward, two steps back situation.

NMH 3 has a proper antagonist in FU, which made the game more enjoyable from a story standpoint compared to the first two games. I really enjoyed the deathglove skills and creating deathglove chips, I think it did a lot for the combat and is a highlight for me. The mini games are fun this time around, the music is great, and the combat is quite addicting. Being able to rematch bosses at higher difficulties for better rewards is an excellent addition, it is something that I have utilized heavily in order to grind rarer components to make stronger deathglove chips.

My main problem with this game is the lack of custimization. I miss being able to change every part of travis' clothes from NMH 2, or being able to get new katanas like in the first two games. I also feel that the pacing is off. The majority of deathglove skills are obtained all at once, the game could have benefited from having more deathglove skills and having them being unlockable one at a time. I think it would have been cooler to give a large selection of deathglove skills and allow the player to mix and match. I also feel that the combo system in nmh 2 was superior to nhm 3. Being able to mix in physical attacks with katana slashes did a lot to keep the combat from getting too stale in nmh2 and is something I have missed in the finale. I also think the lack of stores in nmh3 renders the open world pointless. It was fun to drive around for a while and see the different sections of the cities but it got boring for me relatively quickly. The game is also a bit buggy and suffers from fps drops, glaring pop-ins, and slow texture loading. My final complaint is that it is far too easy to max out Travis skills and stats, which brings me to my conclusion.
All in all NMH3 is a wonderful time, but my main complaints come from not having enough of the game! I wanted more customization options like clothes, katanas, and deathglove skills. I wanted more progression in the form of a deeper upgrade tree and combat skills. Lastly, I wanted more to do in the overworld, going from ufo to ufo in order to participate in a ranked fight became more of a chore than anything - the combat is fun, but the way in which combat is facilitated could have used some more work.

NMH3 is by no means a bad game, in fact its quite the opposite, I just think there were several missed opportunities that would have really propelled this game to legendary status.

But the amazing style and characters would come through a lot better if the game wasn't so difficult to look at and ran smooth. Anyone that saw me playing the game asked when it came out and didn't believe it was a new game, and the load times in between almost every segment made it tiresome to pick up and play sometimes. Despite that, the combat still feels great, though I miss my different weapon options from NMH2, but the combat overall feels more varied with and a little more strategic. However, the actual bossfights in this bossrush game lack the same punch as the first two games. Depending on some RNG elements, you could slip through a boss without even seeing what they have to offer, or get stuck dying to the same attacks that are cumbersome to circumvent. I often found myself getting more satisfaction out of the smaller 'fodder' battles than the actual bossfights. The minigames, especially compared to NMH2, leave a lot to be desired and a lot of the collectibles felt more like a chore (which might be on purpose). But this game is still very much worth a playthrough just for the overflowing style and the weird ride it takes you on. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. tl;dr on gameplay:
if it were the bosses only, it'd be a 7 or 8
if it were everything but the bosses, it'd be a 4 (or lower: ***the performance issues, while isolated to the overworld, are inexcusable***)

I played through on Spicy with a mix of the joycons and pro controller. I tried out all of the minigames/submissions, but did not work through level 3 on all volunteer locations. All of the bosses are cleared S or SS on Carolina Reaper. I cut the collectible hunt short due to the performance issues (the framerate paired with a widescreen TV was giving me a headache).

    Good:
-Controls function as they should, inputs feel responsive (both in combat and in the overworld).
-Boss fights are well-balanced, if not in favor of the player (especially on lower difficulties); overall they're pretty fun and are a high point of the game.
-The story doesn't take itself too seriously, which lends itself well to the boss-oriented structure of the game.
-None of the music is underwhelming, and several tracks are good enough to warrant listening to even if you disliked the game ("Musical Chairs," "ITADAKIMASU," and "Octopus (Deadly Seppun)" come to mind).
-Mastering the gameplay is a rewarding experience throughout the course of the story and, to a lesser extent, when returning to the bosses.

    Mixed:
-Some of the designated battles (blips of enemies between the bosses) felt plainly imbalanced. Maybe I'm just missing something, but dialing things back to an excessively passive playstyle was a huge intrusion.
-Volunteer missions were a slog, but maybe that's the point? I never found myself required to do them, likely as a result of aiming for higher ranks, but given the dreadful state of the overworld, I'm glad I could get in and get out without much delay.
-Humor is very hit and miss. Sometimes I'd find myself smiling and chuckling, while other times my only reaction was "I get it, Suda, thanks." Your mileage may vary; the sequence that served as the punchline to the Miike dialogue and the entire post-FU sequence made me smile pretty wide.
-Effectively 4 (I think) bosses are fanservice stand-ins for the aliens. The pacing relies on anticipation during the mediocre overworld segments, however, so not being familiar with the stand-ins would be a very poor experience. Having played previous titles, I enjoyed the lot of them, but it's some pacing whiplash in the worst way if the player hasn't played the previous titles.

    Bad:
-I would've easily given NMH3 7.5-8 points if not for the god awful framerate and visual issues in the overworld. The framerate will very regularly dip to sub-20 FPS despite the low-poly, low-detail overworld. Several of the islands are outright barren and still have framerate issues.
-The collectibles and the system for obtaining t-shirts also suffers greatly due to the state of the overworld.
-The only discernible differences between the difficulties of boss fights is an increased health pool and damage, so most of the high-difficulty bosses are just a test of the player's patience.

Every gripe I had was easily tossed aside as the amount of love and passion put into this project kept me grinning ear to ear. In my experience there are some visual hiccups and glitches that mostly occurs in the open world, but nothing game breaking that may halt your progress. In fact, the game runs surprisingly smooth at least for the most important sections that being in combat. Anyone who is familiar with Suda51's work will know his writing style isn't for everyone, despite all the craziness that happens almost everything has a reason behind it and is left open to leave players pondering and coming back for more. After beating the game twice I'm still trying to take everything in and some aspects of the game may not be fully realized or appreciated until years later similar to Suda51's best games. What I appreciate most is how Suda handled Travis as a character, going from the loser otaku who didn't understand the concept of fear to a genuine badass who has a lot to lose seriously makes him one of my favorite protagonists in gaming. I could keep going but I'll end it on this, No More Heroes 3 is peak fiction and is easily my game of the year. I am not a stickler for graphics, but I do know of a public complaint about pop in. I can confirm that all pop in is exclusive to the open world segments and is rarely noticeable when driving between buildings or at high speeds with nitro. Let's get the obvious out of the way - the game looks a bit rough, runs a bit rough. Big deal. It's on Switch. This thing can't even handle PS2 era emulated ports at 60 FPS at 720p. And before you go saying "well Breath of the Wild looks amazing and is a much more open world, so it should be doable" don't forget that this is Unreal engine and it's not as flexible as what Nintendo has hidden in their magical development labs. Okay, are we done complaining that performance and visuals are sub-par?

The gameplay is the best in the series, taking many mechanics from TSA. The story starts off strong but near the end I kind of felt a bit disappointed, but overall, it was silly and entertaining shlock and it kept me hooked. Not that the story was the only thing to keep me hooked, the gameplay and mechanical depth (while not as complex as the likes of DMC or the like [although there are triple SSS ranks for some reason and that is hilarious]) serves a variety of flavors almost all of which left me feeling very pleased. Literally only one gameplay segment in the whole game made me say "yeah, that was lame, shouldn't have included that one" out of like a hundred or something. That's a pretty decent ratio.

The reason I wouldn't straight up give it a 9 comes down to the fact that I have some minor gripes here and there when it came to the repetitive nature of encounters and lack of traditional levels + the obvious technical issues. I have no idea why you people are complaining over the open world chugging so much - it works - it works very well in fact ( except for Call of Battle - that map feels like some intern made it [or maybe that's the joke?]).

The soundtrack slaps real hard and I can't think of many tracks that sounded forgettable - maybe the free roaming theme in Call of Battle (which goes toward my theory regarding that whole area being designed specifically to seem like it was made to look and sound bad + be horrible to navigate).

Each boss battle had me on the edge of my seat and they are definitely the highlights of this game. You just keep on getting bamboozled right up until the end and even if you think you know what's going to happen, it doesn't.

The overall style is Suda Ultimate, Unleashed, Unshackled, the dude did whatever he freaking wanted, and it still was better than that last time in 2019 when a certain prolific game making person went haywire proceeding to create the world's most dramatic and pretentious parcel delivery simulator (which unlike No More Heroes 3, wasn't very fun to play. This is.)

So, 8.5's the final score. Worth a buy, honestly, maybe not full price, but if you like fun combat, self awareness brought to extremes, unique and out-there visual designs and straight up sick-boss fights, go ahead and indulge, I know I did.

There's no attention to detail whatsoever, and it's obvious from the very first time you get the "press A button to open the beam katana" prompt. There's no fluidity whatsoever. I was never able to get it to open in a fluid motion. There was always a slight pause between Travis drawing the katana, and then pressing A to open it, where Travis kind of just stands motionless and awkwardly because the creators couldn't even get this EXTREMELY basic game-feel down right! It would be SUCH a satisfying thing to draw the katana perfectly without that obnoxious pause. And yes, this is a minor thing, but the game is PLAGUED with these "minor things" -- these relics of bad game design that most games had weeded out in the 2010s: collectables that aren't tracked, ultra rare drops that require you complete the same boss dozens of times on the hardest instakill mode to get, the same, boring battles over and over again with mobs on the same overworld map rather than purpose-built stages, a 40 minute self-indulgent cutscene sequence at the start of the game that's an absolute chore to watch, with characters we've LONG stopped caring about (or even forgotten), with terrible writing, horrible CGI, more self-indulgent "Miike is so great he's my hero" obnoxious fanboyism between each set, things that were forced into the game just because they felt like they had to be, and were then handled in the absolute worst way possible (Henry Cooldown), and a STILL-EMPTY overworld map that performs like piss in 2021. There's no excuse for it. This would've been a decent Gamecube game back in the day, but now it's a dusty, shoddy relic of a time long-forgotten.

Wow what a game, dont be discouraged to try this game out, it is one of the most stylish and beautiful games I have ever played. The menus, the music, the colors. The combat. It has a few minor issues and the overworld isnt greatly optimized but this is not what the games is about.

El juego aun mantiene la epicidad de los enfrentamientos, la musica sigue siendo genial, el combate es mas fluido y el humor bizarro aun mantiene su "chispeza"

The combat is very meaty, boss fights are properly varied and the absurd story is one of the strongest points of the game. However, No More Heroes III is very uneven and got stuck in the past decade both in terms of gameplay and design. Actually, the series regressed in some aspects. Goichi Suda obviously ran out of ideas an is chasing his own tail. [11/2021, p.62]

It’s ironic that the original game used to satirize the stagnation of video games industry, but now, No More Heroes 3 is afraid to leave familiar ground. Still, long-time fans will enjoy this new chapter of Travis Touchdown’s adventures. [Issue#255, p.54]

Travis Touchdown has grown in his “final installment” of No More Heroes. Because of this, the overall game has a different feel than previous entries and might be why it’s my favorite game in the franchise. Travis is a much more likeable character with some tangible realizations of action’s consequences. Paired with an interesting story, this makes No More Heroes 3 the best entry in the series. If you are a fan, No More Heroes 3 should definitely be added to your library.
