Real gamers and real Gaymers (like me) alike if you love games or you are really truly into gaming with nary a care in the world for difficulty don’t you dare miss these games, they (even in their less qualified & less worthy Sigma forms) are never not going to be three of the greatest gaming experiences you will ever have. If you walk away crying about the difficulty then you can’t possibly be a real Gamer (or Gaymer like me… again) real games are for the hardcore, Zelda games know this, Souls Born’s know this, Old School Shooters and Old School-like Shooters know this real games know that a game without challenge is dog crap and these are two of the best and one of the okay-est because of that, Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 are a couple of my all time faves because they aren’t for wusses they don’t skimp on the gore (even the sigma versions even if they did get toned down) and they don’t slow down, they ramp up and they build up and then (once you get the hang of it) give you a good release of tension and you feel so much relief your hurrah’s reach top end. You kicked ass and you can go find another game to take a break from it all… (I guess you appreciate that New Pokemon Snap now, don’t you). I grew up real went to bed real and ate real when these were a thing and now, everyone and everything else is drab and artificial by comparison. If you have cojones I am not talk about balls, but spine. I am talking intestinal fortitude not weak sauce whipped ass crap that you need only flick to cause a weak man to fall down. Real gamers the ones who put up with it all, we’re women and we kick a lot of ass just to remind you again who the boss is. Pain in the ass wimps rating this low are all of the reasons it takes a whole village to have actual brain power, fortunately and let’s tell it straight I don’t have to lift a finger to tell you I’m a woman and I still beat the first two with trouble but not as much trouble as the weak turds playing COD, NO, I play real games, classics from the 90s are great even some late 80s games are great but something newer age gamers will never understand is the sheer thrill we get from this and that’s why it is and shall forever be A TEN OUT OF TEN!!! Ninja Gaiden is one of the most stellar action series of all time and this collection, warts and all, showed why this franchise is still relevant today. After the NES trilogy of yore, this series was at a hiatus until the emergence of XBOX. I only owned a Playstation at the time, so I missed it the first time around. I played it a bit throughout the years and only during the XBOX 360 years that I dwelled into this series again. It is known for its difficulty and it is a grueling game on its normal settings. So much so that they presented a 'watered down' sequel in Ninja Gaiden 3, which was the weakest of the trilogy. Anyway, what about this collection? It is great in term of collecting this masterful trilogy, not so much on its optimization on the Switch. Resolution took a hit from time and time but still maintaining its FPS. Nevertheless, the essence of the series are clearly intact and having it in one go is a great way to enjoy the series. Expand

The worst action games I ever played. In the game I always died because the game is too fast and you always taking damage. The control is horrible and the game explain next to nothing about the combat works. This is coming from a guy who love hack n slashers in general.

If you are rating this game low because of difficulty, you aren’t a hack and slash gamer. It’s semi difficult games I beat as a child over 15 years ago, meaning if you find it difficult, you are worse than a child. The gameplay is great, the story is amazing.

Waves of enemies do not pile on you, except for three or five optional challenges; instead, at the slightest mistake, it releases groups of three that choke you with great pleasure. You either learn to train your animal instincts, or you can throw the joypad and be thankful that the standard difficulty level in games has been decreasing since the days of nes.

A collection of 3 divisive action games. I personally enjoy Ninja Gaiden but am more than wary of their faults. I understand how die-hard fans are underwhelmed with the Sigma versions of 1 +2 as they do feel stripped-back to their originals. Even so, 2 remains my personal favourite. All 3 games play well enough, but could have done with some more fine-tuning. The inclusion of Hero ModeA collection of 3 divisive action games. All 3 games play well enough, but could have done with some more fine-tuning. The inclusion of Hero Mode make the games more accessible to newcomers as these games are very fast-paced and challenging, so that’s a welcome addition. In terms of performance, things get a little ugly (especially for Switch owners). Sigma 1 maintains a rock-solid 60fps throughout, but Sigma 2 and Razor’s Edge have woefully inconsistent frame rates and resolution hiccups. The dynamic resolution scaling of Chapter 2 in Sigma 2 for example is nothing short of a travesty. Frame rate hiccups have a detrimental impact on combat a lot of the time, resulting in an overload of frustration. This was clearly a rushed project at the end of the day. Hopefully Team Ninja would be decent enough to treat its investors in some little TLC DLC further on down the line. I am currently on the fence whether to recommend Master Collection as it is right now. The games themselves hold up relatively well but performance issues really sour an otherwise meaty experience. I thought it must be good...in the end I got the most frustrating experience of my gaming ‘life’. Firstly this game is very hard but not on a normal fair way (like maybe a Souls game). The enemies are unimaginative and everything is perfectly placed for cheap death over and over again...bosses don’t give a single second of reprieve...terrible controls, horrendous camera angles (you can’t see yourself half the time), poorly placed save states, basic 3D graphics and music with a predictable storyline about saving a ‘powerful dragon sword’...that is all wrapped up into one big ... sandwich. Having been a fan of the Ninja Gaiden series in its vintage incarnations I’d always heard good things about the modern series but hadn’t ever had the pleasure. With them now available on the Switch I’m happy to say that, for the most part, they live up to the hype and deliver an increasingly intense experience that performs reasonably well… though if you’re without the benefit of a Pro Controller or playing it handheld I wouldn’t consider it as ideal for enjoyment without some frustration. Starting with Sigma the core style of the series gets established and though, at times, I found the level design to be a bit wonky there’s no doubt that the action delivers. Stepping up the heat with the sequel, everything feels like it got an upgrade with more refined play, weapons that feel even more fun to use, and quite a bit more craziness that helps propel it to what I’d consider the best title in the trilogy. While the third title, Razor’s Edge, absolutely goes all in on making everything even more intense I’d say it often falls into the trap of everything getting muddled and the action difficult to follow. The main culprit is the camera, which in all 3 titles can sometimes really be your enemy, but with the on-screen chaos that Razor’s Edge thrives on the problem is more pronounced. Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of crazy ninja hacking and slashing it’ll be hard not to have a smile on your face working your way through this collection… just preferably in docked mode with something a bit more robust than the stock JoyCon, which struggles with this sort of intense play.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection offers three titles across three generations of the series. All three are fun, challenging and addictive, but will surely be too tough for some. [Issue #4, p.63]

These three games are very much a product of their time, but underneath their flaws lies some of the best ninja action ever put in a video game. No matter how you slice it, (or what you slice it with) Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is an extraordinary value. [Issue #54 – September 2021, p. 19]

Bare minimum ports with performance issues they may be, but Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is a most welcome release that hopefully fuels the flame for a fourth in the 3D series. The lack of polish or any real noteworthy adjustments or additional content, as well as the third game losing its way following the first two great entries, put a dampener on the package, but there is still good value for money here that fans of challenging games will do well to check out.
