Moonfall Ultimate has the framework for what could have been a better game if given more time to iron-out its strange difficulty scaling, slippery and unresponsive controls, and oddly enough, spell-checking. With a partner and expectations set properly, it could be a suitable rainy-day game, but I cannot recommend it to a solitary soldier.

Like so many action-RPGs before it, Moonfall Ultimate is driven by the minutia of its combat model, but considering battles often rely on one attack (regardless of weapon) and a handful of special moves, you’re left feeling oddly unempowered and frustratingly disconnected. There’s your usual mix of quests to undertake, various medieval-style locations to explore and loot to collect, but none of it ever offers an interpretation you haven’t seen done better elsewhere; while the game calls upon the likes of Golden Axe and Dungeons & Dragons for inspiration, it never hits the same heights. A serviceable experience, but one that won’t linger in the memory for long.

Moonfall Ultimate has some ambition when it draws inspiration from several renowned hack and slash and beat'em up games. The problem is, while its plot is minimally interesting and engaging, the game doesn't really present anything else that will strike a chord with the players and the combat system, its life and soul, is simply too dull, uninteresting and overly simplistic to give any trace of fun while paying Moonfall Ultimate.

Despite an appropriately grim presentation and a fun take on co-operative multiplayer, Moonfall ultimate squanders its 2D Diablo-lite concept premise with its repetitive and uninspired hack 'n' slash combat.

Hit detection is squishy, player movement is twitchy, and the field is littered with random weird thingies that cause damage for no obvious reason. Oh, and because of the side-scrolling perspective, trying to chop through brush directly below invites getting hit, because players can’t slash down.

Moonfall Ultimate is abhorrently average as an action RPG. The hand-drawn art is by far the best thing about it, but the lack of smoothMoonfall Ultimate is abhorrently average as an action RPG. The hand-drawn art is by far the best thing about it, but the lack of smooth animation means that the game only looks good in still screenshots. Repetition runs rife through Moonfall whether you’re engaging in the simplistic combat during longwinded sequences, taking in the lore that’s as deep and as interesting as a puddle, or playing the survival mode which is just a series of even more uninteresting combat encounters. You might be able to find some fun in the co-op, as a friend can make even the most excruciating of experiences seem more entertaining, but it’s hard to find more than one redeeming quality in Moonfall Ultimate otherwise. There are far worse things to spend a dozen dollars and as many hours on, but that won’t keep Moonfall from sinking into the ocean of other Nintendo Switch e-shop releases. Full Review »
