If you want a shooter that has depth, there is plenty to enjoy here, the length sadly will make the experience end far to quickly for most players.

If you want COD on the Switch, this definitely isn’t that. If, however, you want something that’s fun in short bursts and allows you to blast away at bad guys, then Modern Combat Blackout will scratch that itch.

We would have expected something more from this porting, unfortunately Modern Combat 5 still looks like a mobile game and it does not do justice to Nintendo Switch's hardware.

Modern Combat Blackout isn’t a bad game, but it isn’t particularly impressive, either. It is a substitute for Call of Duty? No. Is it a fun, budget first-person shooter for Switch? Yes. Modern Combat Blackout delivers an entertaining first-person shooter at an affordable price. The bite-sized missions and short burst game design works well and achieves what it sets out to do. It won’t win any awards or be remembered as one of the Switch’s best first-person shooters, but for those looking for a cheap shooter, Modern Combat Blackout is ready for duty.

Modern Combat: Blackout did a great job on mobile back in 2014, but the game doesn't look and feel as good on Nintendo Switch four years and a half later.

Modern Combat Blackout is a decent step forward for the series on mobile, but in the presence of DOOM, Wolfenstein II, Paladins and even Payday 2, it simply doesn’t stack up. There’s plenty to appreciate here – the integration of single-player missions, Spec Ops challenges and multiplayer matches into one hub is a really great feature, but the mediocre gameplay and mobile-centric quality levels really water those positives down. Modern Combat could be a great series on Switch, but only if it’s built for the system from the ground up, and not clumsily ported from mobile.

With a $19.99 price tag, there is some leeway to be given for what is obviously a mobile port cash grab on the Switch market. However, there are better FPS titles that you can sink your time into than Modern Combat Blackout. This just has the distinction of being the only military shooter on the platform. If that’s what you’re looking for, this will keep you entertained in short bursts before you peter out. Otherwise, spend time on something like Doom or Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus instead.

Modern Combat: Blackout isn't a great game by any stretch of the imagination, but it's playable enough, and it's the only military shooter of its kind currently available on the Nintendo Switch. I'd suggest that you're better off with something like Splatoon for competitive hijinks, or City of Brass if you're looking for a simply well-made first person action title.

Modern Combat: Blackout is a soulless experience. The campaign is repetitive and dull. The Switch might be lacking a military shooter, but Modern Combat: Blackout is still best left on mobile devices.

Story: OH bad guys are bad and are WAR profiteering and we have to stop them or else ww3 . it seriously feels like this story was wrote in like 3 seconds its such a terrible action movie plot that MIGHT have been good in the 80s if it was campy enough to be so bad it was good , characters fall flat and are very 1 dimensional. and when they kill of "important characters " i found my self asking " who was that ?" and didnt feel any thing
    Story: 1/10

World building: im a little confused by the world To be honest . it seems like mercenaries and terrorist just run a muck and it seems as though as ww3 has already started BUT they keep talking about how "this could start ww3 " . besides main characters there isn't much lore here most charcters are nameless . the world building is as important to this game as it is action B movies.
    World building 0/10

Graphics : the game looks pretty decent actually (remembering its a mobile game port ) the guns have great detail to them even if animations are SUPER stiff textures are good and lighting is OK. if it was on a phone id be sorta impressed but its on the switch where bigger and better things are possible. and i was disappointed when my frames would drop to like 10
    Graphics: 4/10

Gameplay: its stiff clunky budget call of duty , the difficulty was so artificial because i was struggling with the controls most of the time. some of the death animations were satisfying enough to make me have a little bit of fun but not enough to give this a higher rating
    Gameplay: 3/10

Sound design: the voice acting wasn't terrible a masterpiece by no means but adequate, gun sounds were repetitive and adding a silencer only made it worst not better. and was there even any music ? none memorable enough
    sound design: 3/10

    1+0+4+3+3 = 11
    11/5 =2.2
i wouldn't recommend this game at all even if its on sale for a cent

Graphics are a bit dated but still crisp. Some slight frame drops at times and FOV is smaller but these items are being addressed shortly in a coming update according to Gameloft. Full Review »

This game is just trying to cash in on a lack of FPS on switch, and it definitely shows it. The multiplayer is horrible, it has a horrible rank system with unbalanced guns, bas frame rate, and very bland visuals. Full Review »
