Too early to tell because some of the others have stood up over decades, but on a first playthrough this hits al the right buttons. Samus has never moved faster or more fluidly, the range of abilities is phenomenal and you pick them up at lightning pace meaning (until you get stuck lol) you always feel like you're moving forward and advancing. That sense of momentum is something previous games lacked - deliberately, I'd say, but they still lacked it.

The way the game gently leads you to the 'right' path is absolutely expert. I only got properly lost once and that was because I did something that, looking back, was very clearly sequence breaking. Once I went back to where I was 'supposed' to be, I moved on soon after. This is one of the best areas of the game, but it's hard to explain quite how it does this so well. You have, of course, almost total freedom, and can revisit almost any area at almost any time. However, it's also almost always obvious roughly in which area the next continuation path is located. This aspect of the game is brilliantly done.

The EMMI sections are well done. They're tense encounters and the satisfaction of beating each one is always very real. They border on getting repetitive but never quite cross the boundary into becoming a negative.

The visuals are stunning. So many different environments that extend deep into the third dimension and are often filled with life and movement. Some of the wider vistas are incredibly impressive. The game usually has a tight and claustrophobic focus on Samus and her immediate surrounds so on the occasions when it pans out for some grand view, the sense of scale feels magnificent.

Music adds to the atmosphere wonderfully, and the enemies, bosses and other creatures you encounter are varied both in appearance and in challenge, keeping you constantly on your toes in the best way possible.

All in all, an incredible experience and one that I suspect will hold up just as well in ten years as it does now, at which point I'd be more confident calling it the literal best 2D Metroid ever.

Let me preface by saying that I am a new Metroid fan, having never played a game before in the series. I had to create an account to post this review, that should say a lot about how much I love this game, barely 3 days after launch. This game is SOOOO GOOD and such a joy to play! Samus's movement is really smooth and fluid, the platforming feels really good, and over the course of the game, the various power-ups you receive make it even more of a joy to traverse the environments.

The enemies start off pretty weak but as you explore newer areas in planet ZDR, you start encountering tougher ones, some that can even take out an entire energy bar. But the combat options are very good, the melee counter in particular is excellent and even absurdly powerful at times. The bosses are pretty tough, but fair, and you feel satisfied after beating them.

As for the EMMI zones and the EMMIs themselves, I really love this mechanic, makes the game live up to its name "Dread", the fear you experience while evading capture from these enemies is really fun to experience. The EMMIs progressively get tougher, but like the bosses, it feels super satisfying to beat them. I have only reached mid-game and the difficulty has gradually ramped up.

Performance of the game is pretty much near perfect, except for some of the elevator and train sections where the framerate takes a hit, but that's nothing to lose sleep over. The combat and platforming are pretty smooth and look really good in near constant 60 fps.

Honestly, my only complaints are the boss themes seem slightly generic, not too unique, and that you can't remap the controls in-game (although you do get used to it after a while). Even then, I rate this 10/10 and an absolute must have, even if you have never played a Metroid game before. I've read a lot about how the duration is pretty low, and while I'm someone who prefers longer duration games (cost is a big deal for me, so I prefer a good price-playtime ratio), in this case I do not regret spending $60 on this game, purely because every moment playing it feels so amazing and enjoyable.

A great game overall, with a few minor blemishes along the way.

First, this game 's combat is essentially a sequel to Samus Returns on the 3DS. It is 2D, and the melee counter makes a return. This is not in the vein of Metroid Prime. (3D FPS) Just because it is 2D doesn't mean it isn't complex; the combat has a lot of depth and a good, fair difficulty. Definitely have to learn some boss

(3D FPS) Just because it is 2D doesn't mean it isn't complex; the combat has a lot of depth and a good, fair difficulty. Definitely have to learn some boss patterns in a classic, "git gud" fashion.

Story wise, this is a sequel to Metroid Fusion and has a lot of callbacks to that game. If you are nostalgic for that game, this game will give you the tinglies. Definitely a bit of fan service here (which is a good thing.)

The game is relatively linear; even though you can explore, there is usually only one "correct" path at a time, and if you listen, the game will tell you. Some might be turned off by the lack of hand-holding though. Gameplay goes like: Find new power, go back to wherever that power was needed, rinse repeat. A satisfying loop. This game isn't super long either, I beat my first playthrough in about 6 hours. However, these games are EXTREMELY replayable, so that should add some value for the price tag. It's about quality and not excess quantity here; it isn't bloated like other metroidvanias in the genre.

The stealth sections are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they are fun and interesting at first. On the other, they become a bit tedious and not fun, especially the later ones. They aren't particularly "dread" inducing as you the game implies; the EMMI aren't scary and since respawns were so close I'd legit just let them kill me sometimes so I could reset the room. Thankfully, the game ended right as these wore out their welcome.

Overall, amazing game and a return to form utilizing the Switch hardware. This style of Metroid game is usually on a handheld so it looks and sounds a lot better here.

Then the false freedom, this game tries to make a fusion, between Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid, in level design specifically, this "False Freedom" consists of creating predefined corridors, and that you go through them, simple, Point A to Point B Although it is mixed with a Metroid Fusion design, with direct signals to where you have to go, but, the work that MercurySteam did, disguises it in an incredible way, which depending on how you see it, you may like it or otherwise.

And also this same sins of some failures, as most of the game the music is generic, or derivatives. Of the rest, the game is PERFECT, its controls are for the most part fun and intuitive, the bosses can be fun if you learn their patterns, the same soundtrack of the Bosses is incredible, the atmosphere is tetric in some moments, and I can continue and follow.

Before playing it I would recommend that you ask someone who already has it to try it, so these bugs do not ruin your game if you are picky.

The gimmick of the game, the robots that chase you, gets old quickly. They are basically one hit kills. Metroid is supposed to be about exploring and using weapons, trying things, not dying over and over. Even when you have the cannon to deal with the robots, then it becomes almost a series of quicktime events.
I honestly cannot recommend it, either go with 3D metroid or keep to the 2D classics.

It’s still an amazing game each zone u pass through feels fun and full of adventure although that’s really an illusion when most of the zones are just filled up with missile up grades, kinda of a bummer when you’ve been wondering around for 2 hours only to find every hidden thing being a upgrade to health or missiles. On the up side movement always felt great combat and boss fights were just the best parts for me. Game can feel some what liner but that’s a difficult thing for me to explain I find my self comparing it to hollow knight but in hollow knight case ur only vaguely guided around the start while in dread it feels like ur being vaguely guided around your whole trip. Witch I guess isn’t a horrible thing doesn’t make the game any less fun. The difficulty of the game was also done really well never felt like something was impossible as long as I was paying attention to what’s being thrown at me, witch leads to the emme witch start off fairly simple but get more anxiety inducing later in the game especially with the emme that can hear u from anywhere. On the down side emme zones are mostly empty from what I found aside from a missile upgrade here and there. I won’t lie I wanted something hollow knight levels from the genre defining franchise Metroid but even tho I wasn’t given that I still had a great time with dread and what it had to offer. can’t wait till the next mission. So why can't I give this game my highest acolade? The E.M.M.I ruin it.

Their stealth/chase sections are daunting, dread-inducing and off-putting to the new player, lead to many cheap one-hit deaths, yet for the seasoned veteran you can pretty much run to where you need to go without any danger of being captured or killed - for the most part anyway.

Stealth sections shouldn't be something you can blitz through by sprinting through with zero f**ks given. That's the hallmarks of a bad stealth game masquerading as an action-adventure game, which reminds me a lot of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, except Metroid Dread has a very competently built Metroidvania beneath the surface.

It shouldn't be counter-intuitive to sneak around and survey the situation, especially when that's far more likely to impede your progress and put you in danger.

Most of the E.M.M.I are manageable for seasoned players. White is only a challenge because you don't unlock the Phantom Cloak until after it's dead, while Green, Yellow, even Blue can be eluded with relative ease if you know what you're doing.

Purple E.M.M.I is without doubt the worst foe you'll face. It can see through walls, has incredible sight & hearing, and the moment you enter its domain, you had better make damn sure to haul ass and expend your Phantom Cloak for as long as possible, because one slip-up, and this thing will catch up to you and jam its blade into your sternum faster than you can say "What the f**k?"

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
