Aside from that admittedly major issue, Metal Slug Attack Reloaded is a fine enough example of its genre. The sprites look great, which you would expect given the source, and there are a ton of different units to collect. The controls are easy enough to use, and it sits nicely in that zone where it has enough going on to engage you but not so much as to require your full attention. If you want a game to play while you watch some TV shows on your streaming service of choice, this will do the job. It’s just a shame that the difficulty spikes make the game come across like it still wants to shake you down, despite not having any way to do that.

Metal Slug Attack Reloaded removes some of the worst bits of the original mobile game’s mechanics, but the scaled-back roster and brutal difficulty spikes highlight the excessive grinding needed to make these kinds of games profitable and will probably fail to satisfy any but the most hardcore fans of the original. For better or worse, this feels exactly like a mobile game that has been ported to the Switch, warts and all.

Metal Slug Attack Reloaded is a massive disappointment. The bones of a fun game are there, but unfortunately, it’s dragged down by brutal spikes in difficulty, creating a game that verges on unplayable and certainly unenjoyable.

SNK could well have created a sequel to Metal Slug Attack that would be able to work in today's market and keep us entertained as Metal Slug Tactics arrives. Instead, Metal Slug Attack Reloaded is a waste of time that, while it can be entertaining at times, is something that quickly loses the player's attention. The story is non-existent, and the focus on original characters takes away from the protagonists we all know and love.
