    Despite a few minor control issues encountered playing the switch version, nothing detracts from the eye-popping pixel art visuals and although brief, the attempt to inject some story throughout is greatly appreciated.

    Metagal is a fun platformer. It could do with more content, but what’s there is an enjoyable ride with incentive to replay. At $4.99, it’s a bargain that’s worth checking out if you’re a platforming enthusiast or Mega Man fan looking for a little action on the side.

    The way the game is presented makes it seem like its ideas are somewhat being kept to the sidelines in detriment of a more familiar formula, which is a shame as METAGAL could be a more enjoyable game if its own ideas were allowed to rise higher.

    Metagal tries to be a Mega Man homage, but instead comes off as a semi-decent clone with very few original elements. The ability to play as different characters later on is a neat twist, but it doesn’t make up for the lack of sound design polish, inconsistent difficulty spikes, and the lackluster choice in specials weapons. For the asking price of $5, however, Metagal may be looking into for scratching a micro-sized Mega-itch.

    If you’re a rabid Mega Man fan, have already played all the main games to death, and are desperate for something to fill that void, Metagal is maybe worth your five bucks. Otherwise, we’d encourage you to save your money and put it towards something that’s more worth your time.

    but despite all that, gameplay is surprisingly deep, and it holds together quite nicely

    It's clearly very Mega Man inspired. Player character runs, shoots, and earns special weapons from bosses. On that surface, straightforwards as can be. Where the game shines is in the design of its enemies, levels, and even special weapons. Enemies all have clear behaviors. Their patterns and/or response to the player character's patterns and actions is as intuitive to learn as it can be. Levels would often introduce a few concepts, develop each of them in their own level sections, and sometimes mix and match them together. Progressing through stages is satisfying.

    Special weapons have very distinct properties and utilities, and the game is bold enough to require the player to learn and use them in the latter part of the game. Rather than weapon energy being limited, it recharges in a short while.

    This game will require a player to be patient and bear with it a little, however. It's not exactly polished in how it introduces its ideas, especially in the early stages of the game. For example, the game has anti-frustration mechanic that, instead of Extra Lives that are automatically consumed on death, there are "Gears" which allow the player to respawn at the start of the room instead of the last checkpoint. This mechanic somehow eluded me until the latter half of the game. The pause menu is also a bit confusing to navigate, and the game generally lacks Quality of Life options such as being able to set custom controls.

    However, despite me missing the respawn feature, there were only a few spots where returning to the last checkpoint was a bit daunting. I'm sure quite a few people would be able to easily look over the games' blatant shortcomings.

    I really liked what I played, and I can really recommend this game to someone who has a few hours to experience a Jump-and-Shoot platformer.    … Full Review »

    I am not the biggest Mega Man fan but I have played a lot of all of them. Playing this game however feels like a very accurate and well madeI am not the biggest Mega Man fan but I have played a lot of all of them. Playing this game however feels like a very accurate and well made replacement for Mega Man. Well not big on contents and being fairly straightforward and an original if you have a craving for that old school Mega Man feeling you really can't go past this game. As well made fun the controls are tides really not much to complain about for the price.… Full Review »
