Don't believe the fan boy reviews who work for Nintendo. This is a poor game. It has to rely on Mario brand to even sell.

If you want a causal game which is fun to play and aren't worried about a 5 hour life span then buy this.

Do you try and block that power shot with perfect timing, or just let it go by so you don't risk damaging your racket? What choice you make depends on where you are in the match and how much life is left in your racket; and what choice you make can be the difference between a win or loss. The basic, arcade game play of Mario Tennis Aces was exceptionally well-designed.

Everything else is unfinished and sub par for a AAA Nintendo game. I really wish they took more time to make a quality game than do what they did.

When I say, "unfinished" I mean that literally. I honestly think Nintendo did not finish this game before they put it out. Examples:

    1. You can only pick stages randomly in free play. As an inconvenient workaround, you can toggle stages on and off (effectively letting you choose if you toggle everything off but the one you want).
    2. You can't play doubles in tournament mode. You can only do doubles in local and online free play.
    3. The main campaign has to do with collecting "Power Stones." When you get one, a magical chest opens, dramatically revealing... nothing. The way the shots are composed, it really looks like something was supposed to be floating out of that. There's even one shot where the camera zooms way back after a chest opens. I can just see, in my mind's eye, the Power Stone floating up out of the chest: the power stone they never made.
    4. Some challenges in the story campaign involve doing certain things within a time limit. Many challenges have several phases. In good game design, they will give the player a time bonus, or reset the time, after each phase. This way, if the player takes so long on phase one that they'll never have time to finish phase three, the game just cuts the player off right there (instead of pointlessly letting them play phase 2). In the early part of adventure mode, the game is designed this way. In the later part of adventure mode, you get your time up front in a big lump. I think they meant to go back in later and divide it out, but just never did.

Ever since the 80s, the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" has meant something. I worry about the direction of this company if they continue pushing out unfinished products like this one.

I remember playing Mario Tennis on Game Boy Advance, where you could evolve as a player around the tennis club, and hoped for Ace tennis to offer the same kind of experience.
Unfortunately, level progression and new rackets are kind of useless and cannot save the Adventure mode.
Same goes for offline Tournament - 3 short tournaments that offer no real difficulty and about an hour of gameplay before being entirely done.

I will be playing a lot of Ace Tennis with friends, and I'm sure hoping DLCs will improve the solo experience over time.

Sadly tho the same can't be said for the online. Most of characters are HUGELY unbalanced and some are easily exploitable (Boo, Bowser Jr Chain Chomp are examples). For Nintendo to actually leave those characters untested is very unlike them, here hoping for a patch soon. It is nice that you can play the game without those trick shots or fancy moves in Simply class, but most players will go for Standard class. For a tennis game, its very laughable to not have any matches go for more then 3 games, like it would of been nice to be able to do 1 set, 3 sets or even 5 sets. Who thought that would've been a good amount of games.

For my score i give this game a 6 out of 10, the story is lovely, the game runs amazing and the sound is right on for tennis, hitting those shots really makes you feel like you did that with a real racquet, But Leaving those characters unbalanced and down right exploitable, plus not being able to play a full set of tennis is unacceptable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, it feels more like a rental game than a full price game.

Took me about a day to complete the Adventure Mode. The Adventure Mode is generally fun, although pretty short. There are three levels of difficulty (beginner, intermediate, advanced), which gives you enough time to get familiar with the controls and the gameplay at the beginning until the game becomes quite unforgiving at the later levels. With its fairly simple controls, the story mode is easily completed for any average gamer. The hardest level for me was Kamek, which took me about ten tries. I enjoyed the bonus stages and the regular tennis matches, but I thought the boss fights we unnecessary. It's like they tried to add platforming content into a tennis game, which doesn't work for me.

The Tournament Mode allows you to try different characters. Similar to the story mode, it has three different difficulties divided in three cups. The variety in difficulties provide enough content for different levels of gamers, although the beginner mode feels a little too easy (it's like the computer doesn't even try to hit the ball at times). This mode versus computers doesn't add much gameplay to the game, maybe one hour or two. There is also an Online Tournament menu, which I haven't tried yet.

The online play is probably the best aspect of the game since it offers additional replay value. The challenge versus human players is also greater than the hardest levels on story or tournament mode. The only problem is the lag issue that many players seem to be dealing with. If they can fix their server issues, the online play could be worth the purchase by itself.

    Pros:

    -Fun story mode
-Different difficulties for different levels of players
-Controls are responsive and easy to master
-Online play add value to the game
    -Of course, the Mario universe

    Cons:

-Very short Adventure Mode and Tournament Mode. They could have made the Adventure mode longer
-No "retry" option when you fail a level. You have to go through the loading screen and the little animations every time you fail a stage, which make you waste about a minute
-Some later stages can be frustrating until you figure out a pattern (Kamek stage)
    -Laggy online mode

Recap: Recommended if you don't mind overspending for a game and you enjoy the Mario universe/tennis games. Not recommended if you expect more value for your buck.

    The Good:
    1. Online Play has a fun tournament style matchmaking system
    2. Standard Mode (with the energy/special moves) is actually REALLY FUN and good for competitive
    play
    3. Shorter matches makes a ton of sense and feels right
    4. Playing with friends is fun

    The Bad:
    1. ELO system for matchmaking needs to be better (currently you could be matched with anyone
regardless of skill, only matters what stage of the tournament you're in)
    2. Adventure Mode is boring and not too challenging for the most part
    3. COM Tournaments are too easy for all three cups
    4. Characters need to be balanced (Looking at you Bowser Jr.)

    Final Recommendation:
I would recommend this game for fans of the series who can play with friends often or want to get online and smash some rackets. However, I would not recommend the game for anyone who is thinking of just playing it's (very short) story mode.

*IF Nintendo adds online Doubles so that I can play with friends I will give this game a 7/10 but as of today that is not the case.

I loved the original Mario Tennis back on the 64 (obsessively so) - sadly this doesn't seem to have the same magic. It's a fun game with some serious flaws (online balancing, latency issues, terrible character balancing etc) that just make it a tad less than the special game I'd been hoping for.

eh perfectly describes this game. yes I suck at it but seriously, it is not worth the money. it is very bland but a good game to play with friends (course I don't have any of those) fun game, not something I would typically play. I would prefer if it was 30 or 40 dollars but still a good game.

This one ain't that great. The gameplay mechanics are great, but all the side content is lacking and the courts don't reach close to the creativity from the older games. This game is greater with friends, like every party game.

Mario Tennis Aces Review Date 05.06.2020

I played through the campaign (except for the ruins of the exam) and found that okay but nothing more. I would have wished for more tournament tennis as a reference point for a story and, above all, the opportunity to activate it (characters, skins, rackets, etc.). Everything seems very reduced, most of it is unlocked online or in challenges.

Aces is better than Ultra Smash that's a fact. Indeed, the game is more complete with a powerful roster, a continued competition and a story mode !! However, the latter is poorly managed especially in terms of its difficulty; In addition, aces often relies on the achievements of the Wii U game, but that's not bad.

Mario Tennis Aces is a good entry into the Mario Tennis series, but with only a good story mode and a great character roster being its only pros, it's just tennis, which is disappointing as I expected much more from a Mario game. I'd even go as far as to say that Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on the GameCube is better than this game.

By deflecting a super shot and “mis-timing” your swing, your racket takes damage, once it depletes (max: 3 hits) your racket breaks and the other player scores the point or you lose. This would be a decent mechanic if it wasn’t for the ridiculous timing required to not only deflect a super shot, but also not take damage. You can use energy to slow down time and make it easier, but to get a good chance at deflecting the shot without taking damage, you must consume tons of energy, which becomes detrimental in the long run and will most likely cause you to lose.
It becomes frustrating just to play the story mode as well, where sometimes they spam multiple super shots.

I also love how everyone in the game is wearing proper tennis attire (Waluigi looks the best in my opinion). But it's just one thing that really irks me in this game. The new concept...

So, the game's main thing about it is that every character now has an energy meter that they can fill up by performing Charged Shots (a slow process) or by doing Trick Shots (which is almost impossible). And with this energy, you can use it to aim where you're shooting the ball, slow down time, or initiate a Special Shot. This is not a bad idea, in fact, I personally think it's wonderful! It's just that it's REALLY difficult. I'm not joking. This game takes tennis all the way to hell.

The Adventure Mode in the game is a whole other subject of it's own. The story is that Wario and Waluigi, being possessed, hands over Luigi an ancient racket that contains a demons spirit in it. Well how 'bout that! So Mario and Toad set off on their quest to figure out how to stop this evil racket. In the game, you move around the world map doing random mini-games and matches. But the most infuriating part of the game is the boss battles. They're hard as heck, giving you no warning when their next attack is going to come, leaving you no chances to gain energy (which is what you need to beat the boss) and you don't get anything worth it for beating it either, as if the game wasn't hard enough.

Look, Nintendo clearly put lots of heart and dedication into this game, but clearly, it was meant for people with more patience and precision, unless throwing your controller at a wall is what you enjoy doing in your spare time, I would not recommend this game. Great graphics, weird story, and a frustrating game system...

I expected this game would be similar in some way. But I found a story mode that consists on playing an easy short match to best of 3 games (yeah, not sets), some text, and the next match or boring challenge. After about 3hrs, I finished what I thought was the tutorial. But no, it was the whole game. That was all. And it wasn't even fun. It took me several weeks, because after a few minutes I got bored and turn off the console.

Maybe this game is more multiplayer focused, and I can understand that. Once I played it on local multiplayer and it was OK. But it's a scam to price this higher than $20. Camelot was my favorite developer on GBA years. But now, the cash grab philosophy from Nintendo, asks them to make sure gameplay isn't broken, and then release it.

I would give this game a 1/10, because it's unjustifiable to have a fraction of the content the version from 15 years ago had. The only reason I give it a 4, it's because gameplaywise, it's well polished, and it could be enjoyed for a 30 minutes multiplayer session or so. But nothing more.

Another poor effort from Nintendo where they expect full price for a port slapped with a few things that should have been in the Wii U Tennis. It kinda seems like another copy and paste year from Nintendo with balancing and lots of money out of your pocket for not buying a Wii U originally.

The adventure mode is nothing but a very few amount of gimmicky levels put together that severely lack the fun that simple matches offer. The first hour is an unneeded bunch of tutorial levels, given there's a built in tutorial already. The pacing's horrible, since every time you enter a level you get a slow rundown of what the level will be that can be summarized by the line that details the objective when you load the level. Same thing when you exit or lose a level, and slow restarting is never good. There's no real story or goal within this mode, and every level is either long and boring, incredibly easy, or obscure and inconsistent. Too many of them are timed levels, so the first time you might be doomed by simply trying to figure out what you actually need to do. The points system that raises your stats at the end of a level feels entirely irrelevant.

Aside from it, there's no real other single player mode. You start with every character unlocked, so all you'll do will be playing against CPUs. The swing mode is ridiculously bad it feels like you're playing Wii tennis. The character variety is decent, however some characters revolve too heavily on a gimmick; if you're playing against boo or rosalina, you're not playing the same game anymore, you're playing against their slices and trying to get around them.

This game could be salvaged by a good online system, since the game mechanics are pretty good aside from the improvable racket breaking system, but Nintendo strongly fails to deliver on that too. There's no ranking system. You can't play 2v2s with friends against other people, only against CPUs, which is laughable (you can locally.) You can only play games, not sets, including against friends, and you can't even select the stage to play on. It takes a while to find people to play against, there are lag issues, and the matchmaking is region locked. The tournament mode (the demo's only mode,) is the highlight of the game, and it'll be a miracle if you don't get tired of it two days after you've bought the game.

I repeat that Nintendo intends you to buy this game for $60.

Essentially Mario Tennis Aces can deliver on a fast and fun tennis experience, but the lack of QA and time spent on development really shows. There aren't many options for online play, and variety is sorely lacking. Additionally, some characters are incredibly underpowered, and others are extremely overpowered in their capabilities, to the point where you can almost never win against them.

Additionally, the story mode has almost no difficulty curve -- it's either super easy, or stupid kinds of hard, with very little in between. And what little there is of a "story" couldn't be a bigger MacGuffin quest if you tried.

In the online competitive formats, there are several glaring issues on top of how powerful the characters are. The "physics" (if you can even come close to calling it that) don't make a whole lot of sense -- A "lob" shot can fly higher and land sooner than a flat, depending on how the ball is hit. Additionally, some of the mechanics are very easy to abuse, with many players electing to use levitating characters and constantly using max-charge lob shots that are very difficult to stop. The matchmaking system is pretty bad, and doesn't afford you the option to exclude certain characters that are overpowered.

The free play mode offers a wide variety of maps and playstyles, but unfortunately also suffers in the QA department. Simply put, the menus are annoying and difficult to navigate and use, and sometimes your options are severely lacking. The online freeplay serves almost no purpose, as it was not integrated into the other online format. Finding a match is completely random, and skill levels will be completely random.

That said, the gameplay can be fun and get your heart racing, especially when a rally can get quite intense. Sometimes it feels like the controllers have a mind of their own, but overall the core gameplay is good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. all of these positive reviews are steaming hot piles of lying garbage. this game has a great first appeal with its vibrant colors and interesting gameplay. then it persists to give you the most repetitive gameplay you have ever seen. and that is just the minigames. oh, you beat the first minigame that required 600 points? HERES ONE WITH 1200 POINTS. THEN 1600. ETC. now lets get into the matches against computers. for a little while its not bad, and it seems like they're actually giving you a chance. you can actually beat some of the later opponents in the game, but can you do it before breaking your rackets? or controllers? it seems like this game gives the computers so much of a ridiculous advantage it makes me furious. don't get me started on the double jump mechanic, it completely destroys the entire aspect of how you're actually supposed to win a tennis match.

Most importantly, the online tournament mode does nothing to address any skill gaps. You are thrown into the tournament with every other player from your region, regardless of the ranking difference. With the learning curve that this game has, you very rarely have a close or exciting game, rather it is an endless cycle of winning or losing convincingly.

The rest of the game plays fairly well, though could use some balancing (where speedy and tricky characters are more or less useless, at least in my playtime), though could benefit from a cancellation mechanic for charging your shot if you make a mistake. Simple mode is an option for a sort of remedy for my primary complaint, but at that point, I'd rather play something like Wii Sports or just go back to Power Tennis on GCN, which only really had the inability to cancel charging. Also, the ability to get hit by the ball is a stupid mechanic, your swing should cover that if you would've otherwise hit the ball.

I would enjoy this game, but the only way to get around only a few major flaws is by gutting the Mario Sports Games' best features, which is the more outlandish gameplay.

I'd either wait to see if some of the things are addressed or skip this game entirely, which sucks because there is really good stuff in here, but it's just ruined by a cloak of stupid design.

Crap and very little varitey in music and courts, pretty much Wii u title reskinned with some new stuff sprinkled here and there. Missing quite a few staple Mario tennis game modes. Would avoid completely until this is sorted or till the next game.

It’s a pretty good game but I’m bad at it so yeah that’s why I give it a zero

The Game is boring, The Storymode is crappy, and sometimes the Game is even too hard!

Too easy......then impossible. The adventure mode is stressful. I like when a game can gradually transition and build your skills along the way. It starts off way too easy and not fun; and then way too hard and stressful. I rarely give up on a game......but this game is terrible.

How is there no restart button? Between that and the annoying "okie dokie" in the menu...this game appears untested.

This game is missing integral features that make the game enjoyable for multiplayer.

The Mario Tennis series has always been a standby for my friends and I as a game we can pick up and play however we like. Denying us the ability to set the length of a match or even pick the level is baffling - why remove these features which have been present in prior installments? It's such a small

Denying us the ability to set the length of a match or even pick the level is baffling - why remove these features which have been present in prior installments? It's such a small thing, but it ruins the game completely. The mechanics are okay, but they don't improve the game significantly over previous installments, and the controls are overly complex for the dull mechanics they implement.

It's a tennis game trying to be a fighting game, but winds up being neither. This is a love it or hate it game. Demo it somewhere before you buy it. You'll know right away if you're going to hate it. Either way, it's really overpriced at $60. Wait for it to go on sale.

This game is garbage. Which is too bad because I really wanted to like it. The single player is boring and frustrating and the worst offending point is that you can’t retry failed challenges (and you’re going to fail a lot: the game gives the COM opponents every advantage, trick shot save and magical full meter possible) without rewatching a bunch of dumb character convos wasting tones of time. Give this game a miss. Expand

DO NOT BUY before they fix core gaming sins.
horrible adventure mode, some levels rely on pure artificial difficutly (go check the reddit, EVERYONE hates adventure mode)
online roster is broken, if 99% of players pick the same 2 characters you know you have a bad designed game.

wait to buy until they fix or this game will be death within months

Simply put, this game is broken. I repeat, this game is completely broken. There is no way on earth, you release a game of tennis, intended for players of all ages, where your only option is to play a best of 3 games match. 3 GAMES!!! 1 SET, 3 GAMES!! Are you kidding me? Or have I mistakenly bought a game intended for players 5 years and under? Not even a mode titled "CLASSIC TENNIS" givesSimply put, this game is broken. I repeat, this game is completely broken. AND it forces you to play in splitscreen, even in CLASSIC mode?

Oh wow. Before a patch immediately fixes the the 3 games limit, this game can be considered unfinished. Breath of the Wild is 60$, and this is 60$? Hahahahahahahahahahhaha

If you are thinking of buying this game for local multiplayer, please rethink your purchase for the following reasons:

    - You cannot choose a map.
    - You cannot choose the length of a match
    - Forced splitscreen

I have no idea what the developers were thinking, but this is not worth $60. The most basic features imaginable in a multiplayer game are not present.

The Kamek rally challenge is WAY too hard. I'm on like my 70th attempt. What were they thinking. Glad I didn't pay for this game. Artificial difficulty to mask the lack of content.

This game is very bad, the gameplay is boring and the adventure mode is short. The lobby system doesn't work for streamers. Its mario tennis ultra smash repainted and with a boe on it. Bad game.

This game is not worth $60.
It is unpolished and lacks a lot of features.
Unless a patch is released to fix many of the problems that users are complaining about, you should avoid this game at all costs.

Definitely not worth the money, extremely disappointed. Adventure mode sucks. The AI is not well balanced at all. Expert is way too easy, Pro mode is way too hard. The settings for free play are very limited. If it had cost less money I would let it slide, but for 60 dollars? You're getting ripped off.

Mario Tennis Aces may well feature the best mechanics the series has seen to date, its new Zone manoeuvres and Trick Shots adding an exciting, madcap layer of depth to the sport. While Adventure isn’t the big single player hook I’d have hoped and some options feel a little too stripped down, it’s the game’s multiplayer that will keep this title a firm favourite for months to come. Golf next please Camelot.

Brisk pace, easy control, good gameplay, lots of ideas and game modes. This is the new Mario Tennis Aces which is a wise purchase for your Switch. [Issue#288]

I’m pleased that we finally got a new full-fledged game by Camelot. What’s more, it will appeal to a whole lot of different people ranging from hardcore fighting games fans to your grandma and grandpa, though the difficulty level can be painful at times. The most important thing is that Waluigi begins his special move with a rose between his teeth, which puts Mario Tennis Aces dangerously close to the GOTY territory. [08/2018, p.64]
