Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 offers varied family-friendly fun. With so many sports and mini-games to enjoy, it's easy to find something to like about this star-studded package.

Overall, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is the best game in the franchise for newcomers. The game offers an abundance of events and a charming story that’ll give younglings insight into the history of the Olympic Games. If you are looking into becoming a competitive athlete online, then this game will not be for you. However, it is perfect for any get together with friends and/or family, due to the game’s short session mentality.

It may not last you until the Summer Games roll around next year, but the homegrown attention-to-detail and retro mode go some way in making Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 a charming package for casual multiplayer fun this holiday.

Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 is an entertaining take on the sports-event genre that has, by and large, disappeared in the modern-day. The game aims for accessibility at every opportunity, and while nothing about it is particularly exceptional, it still has plenty of unique flourishes to offer, and the wealth of different events and simple controls make for an appealing casual multiplayer title. Thanks to a generous selection of events and a few neat gimmicks, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is the best entry in this series.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has some good ideas, but is held back by conflicting graphical styles and some dull events. The game is made for multi-player and those with enough controllers will find some fun to be had. It's a shame there wasn't just a few more great 3D mini-games or team events to mix up the more boring events.

Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a fun collection of games that absolutely anybody can enjoy. The story mode is delightful, although a little bit tedious and repetitive, but doesn't detract from what is otherwise, a nice package.

If you want to stand out in a genre as overloaded as this, you must do it with ambition, and this new installment of the SEGA franchise continues with its legacy. Have fun, of course, but don't conquer.

A solid mini-game collection that might just serve as a great addition to your game nights as the Olympics draw nearer. Steer clear of a few dud events and you’ll find a satisfying multiplayer experience on offer, and the highly varied story mode means there’s something here for the solo player too. It won’t set your world on fire, but it’s hard not to have fun as you go for gold, even if the game never quite makes it to the top podium.

Mario and Sonic’s collaborative Switch outing may not be a huge upgrade from previous entries, but there’s enough variety and content, all wrapped around a ten-hour story mode and adorned with multiplayer functionality.

It’s far from the must-own that it could have been with some further refinement. The middling story mode wastes a really solid concept, and the best events lack the structure that could make them appealing to play for hours rather than just a few minutes. It’s a fun party game to whip out at social gatherings, which is what it was designed to be after all, but it could have been so much more.

Its 34 events provide welcome variety and there are far more hits than misses in its line-up, but once you're finished with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020's four-hour Story mode it becomes notably less enticing for solo players. With no real incentives or unlockables to aim for, this should be considered a strictly multiplayer affair if you want to still be playing it by the time the actual Tokyo 2020 Olympics roll around.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 brings Mario & Sonic once again to the next edition of the Olympic Games and the series' first game on the Nintendo Switch also means the return of motion controls, as well as a 2D retro-style section directed at the more old school demographic. The game's main plot is only available as a single player experience, which feels like a shortcoming but the game's new additions, events and minigames are certain to make for some very fun hours, even more so in the company of other players.

Tokyo 2020 is a decent entry in the Mario & Sonic series, with plenty of content and charm, but control inconsistency and lack of personalisation can mar the multiplayer fun.

A fun collection of events, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has some chaff amongst the wheat, but overall, this an entertaining package that will no doubt be a party favourite.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has its moments. The events themselves can be fun and challenging—sometimes too challenging—but overall it misses the mark in a couple of areas. The Story Mode can get tedious and boring when you're wading through text more than playing the events, and the fact that there's no tournament mode is a bit puzzling. The game isn't bad by any means, but it feels like more could have been done to enhance the multiplayer experience and to just add some replayability.

Essentially more of the same with a small handful of minor additions. It’s still a sight to behold to witness the unity of a couple household names in gaming, especially in retro-inspired settings, but two of the most iconic faces in the entertainment world deserve better.

This latest entry in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series sports the best collection yet of minigames and events, but is hampered by a tedious story mode and overall poor execution.

This is easily the best game in the Mario & Sonic series to date. Unfortunately, all that really means is that your mileage with the game comes down entirely to your own experience with the franchise, as this latest effort just doesn't do enough to tackle the problems inherent in its predecessors, and does precious little to keep players invested and engaged for more than a few dozen hours.

Just how much replay value is in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will probably depend on how much a player enjoys the Olympics. There’s not much the game does poorly, but there’s not much that really stands out, either. Mario & Sonic 2020 is good enough to qualify, but it won’t be bringing home more than a bronze.

There’s a lot of potential in the combination of the Mario and Sonic universes, and the Olympic setting is one of the grandest stages of them all. Yet after over a decade, the developers simply can’t make the series live up to its massive billing. The retro angle could have been the missing ingredient, but the game doesn't lean into this strength enough. What’s left is a party game that’s fun for a few hours, but will just as quickly be forgotten.
  23. 60
There's nothing wrong with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games 2020. It's presented with verve and for such a large range of mini-games, the fact that there's no true dud in there is impressive in its own right. At the same time, it lacks the competitive edge of the "proper" Olympics title this year, and is a little too feature light for its own good as either a single player or local multiplayer experience. That makes it throwaway. Good fun, sure. Well made, absolutely. But throwaway nonetheless.

For a few rounds, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a great party game. The events themselves are varied and fun to play but the story mode that’s the draw for lone players moves along at a snail’s pace.

Accessible and nice, with a correct amount of content, this Mario & Sonic episode is a good way to have fun with friends, on several minigames that are clearly better than the history mode.

Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has this little extra something compared to the previous games, namely retro events, eminently sympathetic to the most nostalgic, and an aspect of an interactive tourist brochure on Tokyo and the Olympic Games, pleasant for those who love to learn about these two topics. For the rest, to know what is still the heart of the game, Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympics does not yet seem to be able to win among the classics of the family multiplayer genre, the fault of the gameplay sometimes too complex, at other times too basic, not allowing any one to really stand out and leaving on the face of those who participate a pout rather than a smile in most cases.

Despite the addition of retro 2D events and a story mode, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 does little to improve the franchise thanks to middling minigame design and an empty, lackluster campaign. The more creative and deep gameplay arises in the story and dream minigames, but convoluted controls and brief runtimes hold back the majority of the events from entertaining players for more than a couple of attempts. The simplistic story will likely amuse fans of a younger age, but for most Mario, Sonic, Olympics and minigames fans, this crossover continues to disregard its potential and does little to justify its $60 price tag by offering only a few hours worth of polished but mostly mediocre minigames.

An all-around solid good title that would be a fantastic gift for young children. Unfortunately, the story mode is very hit-and-miss.

Mario & Sonic's latest Olympic outing is more of the same, without any real innovation. The new additions of retro and dream events don't fundamentally change up the formula enough to feel like truly meaningful additions, though online multiplayer does add much needed longevity.

A middling collection of mini-games held together by an unfortunately lacklustre story mode, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is, unfortunately, little more than a distraction. While the throwback retro events add a much-needed bit of flavour, they're just not good enough to bring the series out of mediocrity.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 offers a glimpse of what the series could be if it fully committed to a story mode or really invested in becoming a sportier companion to Mario Party. Most of the minigames are fairly strong and the whole package is dripping with polish. As far as minigame collections go, this one can carry the torch just fine—but maybe it’s not the one you pick to light the fire at game night.

Mario & Sonic are back at it again in the 2020 Olympics in a game comprised of 30+ new minigames inspired by real events with wildly varying results.

With a charming campaign, dynamic score and pleasing graphics, this 2020 instalment is a worthwhile purchase for fans of the series looking for more Olympic fun. Yet, given the fluidity of the focused sports games already available on the Switch, and the brilliance of those on previous Nintendo systems, it pales in comparison and becomes a hard sell unless you particularly enjoy the mini-game structure – or want a game that will keep a sports-mad family busy this holiday season.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 does little to make you excited for the real event next year. Its collection of sports minigames varies in quality, the story is dull, and with a surprising lack of structured party play, there's not a lot of value here for the full asking price.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is not a good minigame collection. While the minigames here aren't absolutely atrocious, none of them are particularly good or outstanding. Disappointing motion controls and a boring minigame selection really hamstring this crossover, and when games like Super Mario Party are available, I just can't bring myself to recommend it at all.
  36. 50
A serviceable mini-game compilation with some moderately interesting highlights, held back by peculiar design decisions and little replay value.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 brings a raft of new and returning events with it, but manages to both reduce and overcomplicate everything to the point where it simply isn’t that fun to pick up and play with others. Younger fans may get a kick out of a few of the events, but overall this is a tiresome and drab tie-in that you’ll have forgotten about long before the real world opening ceremony next July.

This is the sort of thing that might keep smaller children occupied for a time, but buffet rules apply: The food doesn’t taste better just because there’s a lot of it. And that’s maybe the best thing I can say about Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: There is certainly a lot of it.
  2. Dec 16, 2019
Ultimately, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is an entertaining, albeit often simple, game full of sporting events that'll get friends and family set for some multiplayer fun. It's not as comprehensive as it perhaps could be in the way it allows players to set up their multiplayer sessions, but the variety and charm when it comes to the way everything is presented helps lift the whole package up.

Playing with a standard controller, the game is standard Olympic button mashing/QTE fare and, frankly, it's the best way to play. Motion controls are hit-or-miss, and downright painful to use most of the time. The biggest issue is that the events themselves end so quickly that you'll spend most of your time in menus choosing events and characters than actually playing the game.

As a local/couch party game, it's OK but it doesn't have much staying power. You can only play one event at a time, then choose another. You can't create a chain of events, there's no tournament style mode, no marathon event mode... just one mode, played once, and then the choice to replay the same event or go back to the main menu. After 20-30 minutes, you'll put it down in favor of some other game because you will have exhausted all of the fun Mario & Sonic have to offer in Tokyo. The story mode is OK but short and essentially exists as a tutorial to the game modes. I don't recommend playing quick events solo because the AI is dreadfully stupid even on the hardest difficulty settings, offering no challenge.

If you're looking for party games, there's better alternatives than this.
