The only thing i can say is fun are the mini games, and thats about it. Just go play monopoly its a lot more fun than this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd like to mention that I have played every Mario Party so I'd like to make certain highlights about the game that can improve the experience a lot fot the next games to come.

Mario Party Superstars is a great game overall; it doesn't do any new (and there's nothing bad about that) and it has improved the experience of some of the old boards which is a nice touch.

    The bad things:
    - The game spits coins everywhere: lucky spaces and bonus minigames.
I don't mind there being lucky spaces because they give unskilled players a chance in the game but the boards are flooded with them and they give a lot of coins progessively as the game approaches the end. The bonus minigames (which double the amount of coins you get) shouldn't be here because the game gives you already a lot of coins, why would you make the coin value decrease so much? It feels like the coins aren't as worth as before in the old days.

    - There animations are cool to see the first time you play but they become sluggish if you play every now and then, you just want to pass them faster e.g.: when you get an item, waiting three seconds everytime for the lucky space roulette to pop up so you stop it; the chain whistles take a huge amount of time (I try to avoid playing Horror Land because this item is everywhere in that board and the turns can take up a big chunk of time. Also, when you cross over the big counter in Space Land, the counters takes like FOUR seconds to lower a number and when it reaches zero, Bowser will shoot the coin beam EVEN if there are no players in range just making the time go to waste (the animations didn't trigger if there wasn't any player in range which was amazing, why see it if there's no one affected by it?).

    - Weird/Bad Selection of minigames: Roll Call = Goomba Spotting / Leaf Leap = What Goes Up... / Pokey Pummel doesn't need to be here if we have Cheep Cheep Chase and Mecha Marathon / Night Light Fright (the distance is hard to tell and sometimes feels unfair) / Dizzy Dancing got dumbed down (You can get several notes instead of one to win, which if fine, but the controls are reversed so it doesn't really mean anything unlike the original which screwed up your control scheme a lot and it felt really dizzy, that's the point o f the minigame...) / Piranha's Pursuit / Tidal Toss is incredibly unfair for the team, the waves hitbox is bigger than it looks / Pogo-a-go-go is the opposite, unfair for the single players, the platforms shifts gears too slow it's hard to lose on the team side / Hammer Drop is doesn't have a limit, I can get 70 coins in that game, the coin bags are too much there and if you have some skill your opponents might get 4 or 5 whilst you got 60 (wtf) / Sneak 'n' Snore control scheme is weird, I know how to play and to hide in time but it's really unintuitive. / Ticktock Hops put the player on the inner side of the clock hang in disadvantatge, unfair / Block Star from MP6... really?.

The overall selection is fine, I never cared much about how many there are from which game but, at least, spread equally the amount of minigames you give to each category (FFA, 2v2, etc...).

    There are 53 FFA, 18 2v2, 18 1v3, 5 1v1 and 6 extras. The amount could have been split better (something like 40 FFA, 22 2v2, 22 1v3, 10 1v1 and 6 Extras).

    Middle ground things:
    - The music for the boards are amazing but the music for many minigames is weird, some remixes are amazing (e.g.: On Your Toes for Storm Chasers), some are just unhearable (e.g.: Let's Have Some Fun for Cake Factory) and some are a bit wtf but ok (e.g.: No Fright, No Fear for Hot Rope Jump) although this a matter of taste but some can agree Cake Factory has an awful piece to listen to compared to the original in MP2. A quick note about the overall music is that Why did they let players choose between original music and remix for boards and not for minigames? I don't know, only Nintendo does.

    - The good things:
The side modes are nice / The game looks AMAZING and the boards remixes are nice, specially Space Land and Woody Woods in my opinion / The game as a whole is amazing and I have laughed so hard with friends, I can't tell how grateful I am they're going back to the good Mario Party ways / If you're an old fan, you're gonna enjoy it despite some inconveniences / If you're new, you're gonna love it, no joke, it's amazing / CLASSIC BONUS STARS ARE BACK

    - Minor complains:
They could have aimed everything towards the N64 era, including minigames, 100 minigames from MP1 - 3, I wouldn't have complained bc the N64 minigames had amazing music, and a lot of imagination going on, they were magical.
    - Why is there only one MP3 board while MP1 and MP2 got two boards each? Nintendo's decisions.
    - Why is there a toggle for CPU speed and not for everyone's speed?

Lucky spaces are everywhere on the boards. Why even bother calling it lucky if it isn't doesn't take any actual luck to land on them. Speaking of boards, the greedy developers gave us only 5 boards that are reworked from previous Mario Party games. It's already bad enough that the developers couldn't even bother to create new boards, so why couldn't they give us more than 5 boards from previous Mario Party games? That is just laziness at this point. Speaking of laziness, there isn't even a proper story mode.

Online works smoothly. You can play with other players on the boards and minigames. As expected, you can also play it locally and alone with bots. This game definitely has tons of replay value both online and offline. Very fun to play but it needs a bit more content to justify that $60 price tag. I recommend you get this game until it is like $30-$40.

This game has to few boards. Seriously how can a Mario Party, which is commercialized as a Best of-Version have only five boards, when even the original Mario Party on the N64 has eight boards in total and six of them are playable right from the start.

I really have a lot of fun with the game, but it could be more, if I had more boards to choose from. Ten boards should be the minimum for a game like this.

The game is fun as expected in multiplayer. The Ai is so unbalanced it’s ridiculous. If playing in single player all 3 AI will actively try to screw your over turning the game into a 3V1 scenario. Now I get the ai sucked in Mario Party Superstars but this is truly unfair.

Mario Party The Top 100 was an interesting concept that had a lot of potential. Take beloved mini-games from series past and compile them into a tribute game to appeal to fans' nostalgia of Mario Party growing up. Superstars does a good job on recreating the feel of the original Mario Party on N64 and does so right when you start the game. Several fan favorite mini-games are back, along with a selection of boards that I have mixed feelings of. Space Land is phenomenal, but I scratch my head at the inclusion of Peach's Birthday Cake, my least favorite board.

My biggest criticism with the whole game is that a lot of charm from older games have been replaced by artificial imitations, and what I mean by that is that modern Mario Party seems to have higher standards and expectations that will weed out a lot of the original charm of early games. The bad voice clips are gone and replaced with milquetoast voice clips recycled from game to game (although Mario's "I did it!" is freakin' hilarious).

The game also has an online mode, and as someone who really didn't like Super Mario Party's online mode, this made me raise some eyebrows. Everyone knows Nintendo isn't known for their reliable online services, so I had a number of reservations for that feature. However after trying it out with a few friends online, I'm happy to report it's actually quite reliable and doesn't slow the game enough to not make it worth it. You'll probably have more lag from other players not actually doing their turns than you will from online connections, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Mario Party Superstars is probably the best Mario Party game to come out since Mario Party 8, I'd argue. I really can't say I enjoy it as much as the older games it's trying to emulate, but it was a good throwback and filled a void of a good version of The Top 100. You'll find yourself reminiscing on the good times back then as you play with newcomers, keeping the legacy of Mario Party strong.

As for the new content, there is a severe lack of characters included to pick from, in fact there are more characters in almost every other entry in the franchise. The online is horrible, and the fact you are usually going to play with people on bad internet isn't going to help you either. Many features that are usually included in triple AAA remasters are not here either: Lack of any sort of gallery, extra features, or anything unique to make the player interested.

It's literally just watered down old school Mario party. You're better off playing any of the first 6 entries than this.

As nothing is perfect, this game can be pretty unfair. Thus, unpredictability can be a kind of artificial. So, at the end of the day, if you care most about having a good time with your friends, this can't be a problem. Otherwise, you'll get frustrated. A good example was my friend, Neto. He used the same strat all game. He literally played, sleep, woke up, and played again. At the game's end, he got lucky and won it - without even caring about it. Since it was a lot of fun and memorable, it's ok. But be advised about it.

    6/10, here's why:

While the game is decent and playable, It has more cons than pros imo. This review will highlight some of them.

    Positives :
    - The game, imo, is better than the "abominations" known as Mario Party 9 and 10, the vehicle ones, since individual play/movement is back.
    - Decent amount of characters, 10 total.
    - Fun mini-games with a mix of luck and skill.
    - Friendly for kids, meaning, fun and a casual game by default, can be slightly tweaked for more competitive play, keyword: "slightly".
    - A variety of boards that are mostly fun and offer changes to gameplay.

    Negatives:
    - TOO casual and friendly leaving you with not much control (Luck focused).
    - Lack of options and custom settings which leaves for almost no actual competitive settings. There ARE options to enable/disable handicap or enable/disable bonus stars, BUT nothing else.
    - Lack of competitive play support, and competitive settings. E.g. features such as: Banning/limiting items, increasing/decreasing item and/or star prices, modified coin gain value (coins gained/lost when landing on blue/red spaces) etc. Game released in 2021, you'd think the technology would be there by now.
    - Limited gameplay and strategy, and competitive play due to no optimal settings, bad board rework and the current items available, most being unavailable due to specific boards, random luck events or "locked" until the 5 final rounds. Also lack of targeting and item variety create less interesting plays such as planning ahead aka setting up plays or sabotaging a "specific" player etc.
    - Lack of "content". There are currently 8 characters, 5 boards and 16 items currently ingame, 9 which are always available and 2 which board specific. That leaves 5 "rare/hidden" items.
    - Lack of boards to play, while 5 boards is not too bad the game could certainly need more boards, since most boards are unique and play a specific way. E.g. On 1 board the Star doesn't move to a different space after you buy one, etc. Also when you compare to older titles such as the 1st mario party which released 20 years ago and had 8 or so boards to play at launch, it's no wonder the game feels like it's lacking content.
    - NO DLC CONTENT. Which further adds to the "not enough boards" issue and other issues such as, not enough items.
    - Bad/Weird CPU, mainly Hard and Master level. They sometimes do "correct" plays such as warp the star away if you're close to it, other times they rotate the same little path in the corner using up all of their mushrooms and extra dices, essentially doing nothing each turn. They seem decent at mini-games?
    - Bad game balance. You gain more money than you can spend. This and the existence of an abundance of free items almost makes even the shop obsolete. It also encourages you to spend your items since you'll refill shortly. The bad board and game balancing issue leads to issues in terms of economy, items and strategy, which creates almost no counterplay or smart plays, it feels too much like autoplay/luck.
    - Not enough Red/negative spaces, most were removed on the reworked boards making loss of coin difficult, also greatly affecting 1v3 and 2v2 minigame rounds.
    - Versus events 1v3 and 2v2, excluding Vs Space aka 1v1, do not lose you coins on a minigame loss, at least not the way it used to?
    - There's an excessive amount of Lucky spaces on each board, 10 to 15 and they offer random but free items or 10-20+ coins. Like waaaay too much. Both spaces and net gain from the coins/items.
    - Lucky space makes shop semi-obsolete. Has too many options granting you more items then the shop.
    - There's not enough items, there are 16 items currently ingame, 9 available at all times, others exclusive to specific board or board/game states such as hidden in bonus spaces, final 5 turns event etc.
    - There's not enough item variation, Items are more buff focused, there's barely any that target opponents, if there are it's usually random and/or affects you too.
    - Item balacing issue, rarity issue and availability issue ruin the game and makes 0 sense. "Rare" items are too commonly found and aquired, mainly the Golden Pipe.
    - Item shop sells too many similar items which means no real point in buying the lesser version. Golden Pipe>Triple Dice>Double Dice>Mushroom>Custom Dice, all items that affect "forward" movement in a way, getting you closer to the star. All affordable and almost as commonly found in shop as in lucky spaces btw.
    - Items lack originality/difference between other items or share similar purpose making the others obsolete in a way.
    - Too much coin generation per turn+minigame (probably mentioned this but I'll do it again, since it's insane).
    - Pity prizes for 2nd and 3rd place after minigame, leads to no "real" meaning in winning a minigame besides gaining 10 coins instead of 3. You can no longer deny someone who's near a star the "needed" gold since there are pity prizes now.

Mario Party Superstars is basically a celebration of the Mario Party franchise. But technical issues still haunt the online multiplayer, besides the lack of attention regarding minor details, which ends up hindering the fun factor.
