Quite a step forward for the series, though, it is still not back on its feet. Maybe it's because I'm older than a lot of Switch players now, but I played Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube when it first launched in 2001. It was quite an understated title, and it didn't get the greatest of reviews, but my cousins and I loved it. Maybe it's because I'm older than a lot of Switch players now, but I played Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube when it first launched in 2001. It was quite an understated title, and it didn't get the greatest of reviews, but my cousins and I loved it. It was never really a "survival horror" game by any means, but the creepiness was there at times, and the portrait ghosts were really interesting and fun.

But, see, Dark Moon is where Luigi's Mansion seemed to derail. I didn't like it. The graphics were okay, but it's like the franchise went way off in a separate direction than where it started. Sure, there were new features, but it lacked the charm that the first one had, and the mission-based level progression overall broke the immersion.

Fast forward to now, I see the trailer for this game, and even though it had the graphics of Dark Moon and the ghosts from said game returning, knowing the whole game was set in one "mansion," or hotel in this game's case, had me in more optimistic spirits as the lack of this broke the immersion in the last game. The dark light returning and all those newer features were fine with me and were kind of like icing on the cake.

When I first started up this game, I was in love. It was almost like Luigi's Mansion was back on track. The whole hotel seemed to run together and going up from the parking deck to first and second floors seamlessly made me feel so happy; however, this excitement seemed to end rather quickly for me. No, the game doesn't turn into a mission based progression, but the floors begin to lose continuity. See, in the first game everything takes place in a mansion. You never seem to feel like that atmosphere is lost. In this game, each of the floors begin to become drastically different, and that would be okay if it never lost sight of where it was going. I mean a pyramid and a ghost ship inside of a hotel? That makes literally no sense.

Those nonsensical things along with the absence of ghosts with a personality and backstory like the portrait ghosts of the first game just make this a "good" outing rather than a great return for the series. Sure, it's a step forward from Dark Moon, but it's still hard for me to recommend at full console game price. I just hope that the series regains some of the things that made it so beloved and special in the first place in future outings.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is a solid game, and a wonderful homage to the original game on GameCube. There are some great additions and the atmosphere is perfect. Gameplay is solid. The art-style is reminiscent of Dark Moon on 3DS, but looks leagues better thanks to the Switch's hardware. The lighting effects are incredible and the character models and environment have very intricate detail. For example, you can see stitches on Luigi's hat/clothes and the hotel rooms are PACKED with interact-able objects. The animations of the characters have also vastly improved. Everything is fluid. Luigi's facial expressions and body language ooze personality and the same goes for the new ghosts and other NPCs. I was also surprised how many animated cut-scenes this game has. It's almost as if you're watching an interactive pixar movie. I also just want to take the time to appreciate how each boss (like in the 1st game) has a unique design and personality. The 2nd game on 3DS was criticized for generic bosses and Next Level games delivered this time around. The game also performs very well. I haven't ran into any dips in frame rate, come to think of it.

Gameplay: This game feels like a mix between the 1st and 2nd games. Because unlike the 3DS, the Switch has 2 control sticks. Therefore, you can move Luigi and the flashlight independent of one another like in the 1st game. It feels like the 2nd game in regards to how Luigi moves and how sucking up ghosts works, which i'm glad they kept. What I really appreciate about this game is how they took criticism of the 1st 2 games and used it to shape this one. For example, the 1st game on the Gamecube could be completed in one sitting and the controls felt a bit awkward at times. The 2nd game on 3DS ditched the single mansion setting in favor of a level-structure like in the Mario games, which wasn't terrible, but the 1st game's labyrinth-like feel fits the series better imo. Which brings us to the 3rd game which takes place in a large hotel where each floor has a different theme, but all areas still connected. Luigi's "poltergust" vacuum is given some new tricks that add much more depth to the gameplay. One new feature is the suction shot that allows Luigi shoot a plunger, which he can pull to open heavy doors or flip large items. The dark light returns from the 2nd game is used to uncover secrets invisible to the naked eye. Lastly, we have "Gooigi", a gooey manifestation of Luigi's spirit (I think) that can squeeze through tight spaces and slip through hazards in order to solve puzzles. ALL of the poltergust's functions are used in very creative ways.

Content: This is honestly the most content-packed game of the series. There's the main story mode, screampark (a multiplayer minigame mode that can be played with up to 8 people locally on 1 console) and the Scarescraper (an online multiplayer mode that can be played with 4 people over the internet or locally should each player have their own console). I had a blast with all these modes. The story mode is the longest out of the series and you'll most likely want to jump back in to capture all the Boo ghosts and collect every gem on each floor, which are hid pretty well. And there's basically infinite replayability with the multiplayer modes and not only that, Nintendo plans to add more scream park games via paid DLC.

Difficulty: The game is actually a nice challenge. The hardest parts are the puzzles and a few of the bosses. What I like about the bosses is that they are kind of like puzzles themselves. Some bosses had me running around in circles figuring out what to do and there's nothing wrong with that. This game encourages you to put pieces together and study your surroundings. Not all games marketed towards younger audiences have to hold your hand all the time AHEM Pokemon AHEM. And of course if you're stumped, Professor E Gadd may have a tip, but he won't spoil too much.

Cons: First, there is no option to invert the Y-axis, which I feel should be standard in 3D games. It's not a big deal, but something worth noting. Second, there's not much variety in enemy ghosts and by enemy, I mean NON-BOSS ghosts. The bosses are a major improvement and one of the highlights of the game, but the standard enemy ghosts are few in variety. And who knows, this may just be to save ideas for the next game.

Verdict: Luigi's Mansion 3 is a very polished game and deserving of the "3" in its title. Next level games has proved they can make an astounding game that takes advantage of the Switch's hardware and build up upon what the series had established. If you are interested in buying this game, please consider buying a new copy (or digital) and supporting the developers for their hard work, they deserve it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an absolute joyride from start to finish. Luigi's Mansion 3 is a contender for the Best Game on Switch this year, and there are so many reasons on why.

+ Superb primary and secondary gameplay loop. Almost every single aspect of you exploring the hotel, solving clever puzzles on each floor and capturing ghosts is with one single aspect in mind: Fun. Nothing feels like a slog, nothing feels like it drags too long, something Dark Moon had many issues with

+ Gooigi is the best new addition the Mushroom Kingdom has seen yet. He's not a gimmick, he feels like an actual part of this franchise. He's a creature made out of goo and has more character to him that any right he has to be.

+ Floor bosses are all unique not only in their looks but also their fights. The ways you duke it out with every boss is both exciting and tricky. Some bosses are better than others, though none of them felt tedious to fight against. A personal favourite of mine was Morty, the film director in Floor 7. His capturing is entirely optional and his fight consists of a Godzilla-like movie which he recorded.

+ Disabling E. Gadds tips. Thank god.

+ Online Mode which adds tons of replayability. Play it with friends instead of randoms, the latter tends to not go well

~There is one element to the game where a cat steals your button to the next floor, and that segment has you go through already visited floors - it's boring and uninteresting.

    - Difficulties with the controls at the final boss - auto-lock is confusing and works against you.

I can't say much otherwise other than this game is a must-have for the Switch. Glorious Next Level Games!

Definitely a "should play" on the Nintendo Switch. Not quite up there with Odyssey and BoTW. Small things detract from the overall experience.

The cutscenes are cute, but not very immersive. Just a bit more voice acting "more than mumble speech" would be good, especially when you see the characters mouths moving.

Not being able to SKIP the cutscenes, especially when the play after you die, was annoying.

More is not better. Having multiple different actions on the same button because they ran out of buttons they could use was bad (dark light + primary action on the same button). There were times where I felt like I didn't have good control of the character.

None of the puzzles were crazy obscure, some required some crazy good timing.

The fact that it's a collect-a-thon that doesn't let you continue after you "beat the game" without returning to a point in your save where you haven't won (a la Breath of the Wild) was annoying. Taking AWAY the in-game achievement for finishing the game was downright annoying.
overall a very good game, special and worthy of the legacy of the original.

It's clear that Next Level Games took the criticisms form their previous entry to heart and sought to make a better game this time around. In some ways they did, In others they did not. Those that enjoyed the exhilarating feel of reeling a particular pesky ghost will be ultimately disappointed as the introduction of the new "slam" ability trivializes most combat sections in the game, not only that it also completely underminds what made the combat so special to begin with. Aside from a dumbed down, basic combat system, LM3 has a weird over emphasis on puzzle solving. While these puzzles can be occasionally clever, they may leave you wondering how they belong in a Luigi's Mansion game to begin with. I often found myself going through long stretches of gameplay eagerly anticipating to see what ghost might be lurking around the next corner only to play through a series of puzzles, ranging from clever at best and obtuse at worst. All in all, Luigi's Mansion 3 is a solid game, and fairs much better when looked at as a stand alone experience. As a sequel, it falls just a tad short.

The story mode which is nice and lengthy was filled with all sorts of cool floors to explore, multiple collectibles, and myriad of cool character ghosts to capture with a unique boss every floor (and sometimes more than one)! The music and visuals pair perfectly to set up a creepy atmosphere, while at the same time retaining the light hearted nature we expect from Nintendo. There are several parts of this game that feel like a survival horror, and maybe even a light jump scare, but then we have Luigi's funny quips like saying "Hellooooo?" occasionally when he enters a room, or maybe a jump caused by Polterpup himself! As if the amazing single player mode wasn't enough, they gave us not one but 2 mutiplayer modes that play super smoothly and are very addictive to come back to. I haven't even played the local multiplayer mode (Screampark) yet, but Scarescraper is an absolute blast to try and clear as many floors as possible, each with a different objective to constantly keep you on your toes. As if this game wasn't already fun enough, it constantly gives you more ways to have fun each time you turn it on!

Ultimately Next Level Games went above and beyond, listening to fan feedback while still introducing enough new and innovative concepts to make this game unique to their own. They could have stopped at making it a great game, but it's so clear they went above and beyond to make it the best it possibly could be, and it worked. This game is a true masterpiece, and deserves nothing less than a 10/10 from me. Trust me, this is one purchase you cannot regret.

The game follows the familiar formula that has been established in the previous two installments in the series: You explore a spooky building (in this case, a haunted hotel) with your trusty vacuum-cleaner on your back, battling and capturing ghosts and sucking up tons of cash that is hidden behind or in every other item and piece of furniture. The open-form exploration of the first game is back, which I whole-heartedly welcome, because I found the mission structure of LM2 very limiting and annoying.

You still have the same basic abilities: Suck, blow, flashlight, and dark light. New is the addition of Gooigi, a second Luigi made of green Goo with special abilities that you can summon by the push of the right analogue stick to help you out with puzzles or in combat. All these mechanics get utilized very well over the course of the game. I only would have liked for

    SPOILER

the super-vacuum to be utilized far more often, because it is just so much fun. It would have been ideal for the final boss fight as well. Have a lightning bolt strike Luigi (and maybe Gooigi) on the roof of the hotel so now they can use the super-vacuum without the need for an outlet. Would have been epic and an appropriate climax. The way it is now, it really only makes two appearances, of which one is optional.

    /SPOILER

The graphics are amazing for Switch standards and the art design is really diverse, imaginative and colourful. You progress up the hotel by collecting missing elevator buttons and every floor has its own, unique theme, complete with an accompanying boss fight. So the whole game is kind of like a theme park. It truly never gets boring and the attention to detail is very apparent. As always, the environment is also very interactive.

The only issues I have with LM3 are ones that I already had with its predecessors. Depth perecption is still quite an issue because the camera is zoomed out so far that it can be hard sometimes to tell where an object or ghost is located in relation to Luigi. Which ties directly into my next issue with the controls. Mostly, they are fine, but sucking things up and aiming to shoot them at a specific object can be really tricky, especially in the heat of a (boss) battle. Also, I always feel like Luigi is just too sluggish on his feet, which is most apparent in the afore-mentioned boss battles, when the game sometimes requires you to have pretty fast reactions. Which is also a difficulty spike that's not in tune with the generally really relaxed pace of the rest of the game. In LM2, this was kind of remedied by giving Luigi a dodge-move. But, for reasons beyond my comprehension, they removed that move.

Then you also unnecessarily lose control of Luigi far too often, every time anything at all happens around him, which I find to be very annoying. Which leads me to my next point: After three games of confronting his fear of ghosts, how can Luigi still be such a whimp? I mean, it may sound kind of silly to ask for character development in a Mario-related game, but this schtick of Luigi as a coward is getting kind of old for me now.

In conclusion, a more than worthy successor to the Luigi's Mansion franchise. Nothing's really that different gameplay-wise, but that's because it doesn't need to be. If you liked the first two games, you can't go wrong here.

P.S. Who are all these Spanish/Mexican people review-bombing this? Are these all fake-accounts from the same guy? This is an English website, dude. If you can't write your review in English, don't even bother.

    This one's also hilarious:
"We feel we have been tricked!
The kids were totally disappointed, and me too.
Where do these high ratings originate from?
I understand now why the preview movie in the estore was so obfuscating.
Don't waste your money time and expectations on it.
It's not a platformer but a very boring kind of role playing game"

If you seriously couldn't figure out that this isn't a platformer (just because it has "Luigi" in the title??) before you spent 60$ on it, you're a dumb-dumb. Nobody tricked you. Not to mention that you also don't seem to know what constitutes a "role playing game".

The game is a bit of a mix between the first and second titles. It has more of the open world exploration feel of the first game with the more varied mechanics of the second.

The gameplay and combat is much improved over previous titles and has a more action oriented feel. Depending on your preference, this can be a positive or a negative. I personally found the new mechanics to add to the game, so it is a welcomed addition.
