Upgraded models and textures do bring new life to this 11-year-old title. That which once was absolutely superb is now being drawn back by an obsolete “pocket design” and a few elements that slow the experience down. But in whichever way you look at it, it is one superb game and possibly the greatest game of the series. It did not age well, no matter the quick facelift the studio performed.

Nintendo brings back one of the biggest Luigi games and now it looks impressive on Switch. Instead, it prefers to maintain its essence with few playable new features, especially in multiplayer mode. Even so, it is still an essential game.

As a game in itself, it is a timeless gem that has not aged at all thanks to the freshness provided by the playability of this saga, its originality and its impeccable level design. And as a remaster, although it doesn't look as good as Luigi's Mansion 3, the visual changes and improvements fit it like a glove and doesn't clash at all among the Nintendo Switch game catalog.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is the same great game it was on the Nintendo 3DS, now with a fresh lick of paint and improved controls thanks to the dual analog sticks. Whether it's worth picking up again after 10 years is up to you. However, for everyone else—whether you're a Luigi's Mansion newbie or a Luigi's Mansion 3 player—this game is well worth a look; just remember to bring a torch.

There’s a sense of sadness in Luigi’s form as this is uttered. Sure, his brother gets all the glory, but Luigi is clearing out huge collections of ghosts, getting knocked back on his butt by rambunctious ghouls, and facing his fears. I’d argue that he’s a great hero, and his adventures here are equally as brilliant as any Mario has had over the years.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a remake with a modern look, but no real new content. However, it’s still a fantastic game and the best version for people to experience for the first time.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has been a great game on 3DS with highly varied gameplay with action, exploring, puzzles and humorous staging. With the HD version on Switch all these strengths remain, while Nintendo ensures contemporary graphics including the visual update.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD may not be at the level of other remasters and remakes like Metroid Prime Remastered or Paper Mario: The Millennial Door, but even that doesn't stop it from remaining a timeless classic that is worth discovering if you haven't played it on Nintendo 3DS ...or revive, if you already did.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is in the middle ground between port and remake. It's the bread and butter of Nintendo's re-releases, which perhaps doesn't justify its full price, even considering that the answer to the question “is it worth it” is subjective and very particular to each person.
  10. 85
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD does not reinvent the original by any means. If the mission based gameplay structure bothered you on 3DS, it won’t be any better here. While that particular issue largely goes away as the game goes on, I would have liked some quality of life updates for multiplayer. That being said, this is without a doubt the definitive version of Dark Moon. The love and care with which it has been remastered deserves calling out. Tantalus has done an incredible job here. The original work of Next Level Games really shines as their animation and underlying art direction remain unchanged. This is easily the best way to play Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon.

It's a good remaster and the only thing to regret is that it doesn't include more content, the first installment, or that it's not as close to a remake as Metroid Prime.

Who is Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for? At the outset I would tell you that if for this or that reason you skipped Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS, now is an unbeatable opportunity to enter its incredible world. Ignore any noise that may be around you. The game is excellent. In case you have played the original game and you are one of those who did not like it, here you will find practically the same experience, which, obviously, is great news for those who did appreciate it, because I assure you that You will have another great time with this proposal that shines brightly thanks to all its charisma, graphics and sound, as well as a super outstanding level design and puzzles that, of course, show the best side of Next Level Games.

Fun, light-hearted, stimulating, ghostly and adorable, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a great game that mixes joy, brilliant ideas and ghosts with expert craftsmanship. It's not perfect because the original wasn't perfect, for example the level setting can make you turn up your nose as can the repetitiveness or the resulting rhythm, but there's no doubt that those who appreciated the chapter on 3DS will also love this revisitation. Those who have never played it before can finally fill the gap with a game suitable for adults and children, full of passion, attention to detail and curious ideas, both in single player and multiplayer. As usual, when Nintendo is involved: if we had more video games like this, the world would probably be a better place.

Returning to play Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is always a pleasure, especially because in terms of level design and puzzles, for me it is the most interesting chapter in the series. Plus the new control system is a real blessing, even more welcome than the new graphics.

Luigi, the loveable scaredy-cat that he is, returns for another outing that holds up well in its transition from 3DS to Switch. Despite being a straight port without any new features, it remains a gorgeous and inventive world worth exploring for old and new fans alike.

Although it’s a pretty barebones remaster, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is still frighteningly brilliant, taking the 3DS classic to new heights with its improved graphics and quality-of-life changes. While it might be a tough sell for those who played the original due to its lack of new content, it’s also a must-have for Switch owners that enjoyed Luigi’s Mansion 3 and have yet to experience its predecessor. With a terrific single-player campaign and the resurgence of the supernaturally addictive online co-op ScareScraper mode, the sequel to Luigi’s Mansion is now better than ever on Switch and lives up to my expectations.

With the inclusion of some improvements such as HD rumble or high definition graphics, this is the best version of a very enjoyable title. In addition to its main single-player mode, its cooperative multiplayer mode is quite complete and gives many hours of gameplay with friends both locally and online.

I had a lovely time playing Luigi's Mansion 2 HD as it brought back memories as well as solidified how special of a series these ghost-busting adventures are. Plus, the animation and audio design remain some of the best in all of gaming.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD retains its charm and humor with its ghost-busting adventure across haunted mansions, offering solid gameplay and level design. While it excels in visuals and controls on the Switch, it lacks new content additions from its original 3DS release.
  20. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD plays a bit more like a portable game with its origins from the 3DS, but the graphical and gameplay improvements make it worth trying on the Switch. Thanks to new additions and visual upgrades, the HD version of the game offers a fun and spooky experience.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a fun, accessibly challenging game that looks fantastic on the Switch. There aren’t enough new elements or improvements to help it compare to Luigi’s Mansion 3, but it’s still an enjoyable romp, especially for those who didn’t visit Evershade Valley on the 3DS.

While Luigi’s Mansion 2 wouldn’t have been my first pick among Nintendo’s selection of first-party 3DS games to make the trip to the Switch, it’s still a fun game that newcomers should enjoy well enough. It would have been nice to see more done here than an admittedly well-done boost to the presentation, especially given it’s a full-priced release, but it’s not as though it’s a game that feels incomplete or in need of any particular additions. I’d recommend Luigi’s Mansion 3 over this game, but if you’ve tapped that out and are hungry for more, you’ll find that here.

Despite the bite-sized mission structure and constant interruptions, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is still a great game, full of funny moments, quirky segments like Luigi humming along to the background music, and a gorgeous HD makeover which leaves no hint that this is a port of an 11-year-old handheld game. I admit that I was a fan of Dark Moon when it was first released on the 3DS, so my judgment may be a bit biased, but I still believe that Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is well worth picking up and that this HD remaster has done a fantastic job bringing a handheld classic to modern consoles.

The main problem with Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is that beyond solving puzzles or catching ghosts, the way we control Luigi and his vacuum cleaner feels stuck in a handheld console rather than taking advantage of the benefits of the Nintendo Switch, which has more buttons. This isn't the game that forever changed the franchise, but at least it served to keep it alive in the minds of players for longer.
  25. 80
The confined nature of the levels can sometimes be problematic when grappling with the wildly bucking ghosts, not least because aiming the vacuum feels a tad awkward. Younger or less experienced players drawn in by the colourful setting and gentle humour may find the battles with bigger baddies rather challenging. But at their heart, Luigi’s escapades serve up a helping of supernatural whimsy that stands up well after more than a decade.

While it may not be perfect or add more to what the original came with, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD lets those who never had a chance to play it experience it in a whole new light. Its bones may still scream 3DS handheld game, but you can appreciate how much went into making the game shine on Switch. Its updated visuals simply add to the fun gameplay and enticing levels of the original that were and still are a joy to play.

It's the green brother's time to shine in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD - and shine he does. This whimsical ghost-hunting adventure is a great deal of fun, and it looks better than ever thanks to this remaster. Even though taking ghosts down can sometimes be a pain, it's a small price to pay for the joy of exploring the game's wonderfully-designed environments.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a great Switch re-release, making it a must-play for newcomers of the series as well as a nostalgic adventure for returning fans of the 2013 game. While the title doesn’t bring in any new features to add to the mix, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD shines with its updated look and design which matches authentically with the roster of current Nintendo Switch titles. If you can look past the few kinks in the road, you're in for an all-out spooky good time with Luigi. Just make sure to look behind you from time to time.

Even if it was outshined by its successor, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is still worth your time. It may not be the GOTY contender that Luigi’s Mansion 3 was, but if you give it a chance, you’ll still find it worth your while.

I suppose what really hurts Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is that Luigi’s Mansion 3 is on the Switch and feels like the definitive entry in the series. It’s great to be able to go back to the earlier installment on the system. Especially since it is fun for what it is. It’s still enjoyable, and it looks great. I suppose my only regret is that the format of it felt better on the 3DS, and the limits of the more mission-based approach are more strongly felt on this console.

The second part of the series still has the charm of different houses and fun ghost-hunting mechanics. The well-balanced gameplay of discovery, puzzles, and ghost capture makes you feel involved. The game design has only one flaw in the remake: the lack of checkpoints can lead to some frustrating moments.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD brings the 3DS sequel back to life with improved graphics, though it retains the original content unchanged. While it misses the chance to update mechanics to align with the latest installment, it still guarantees fun for those new to Luigi's ghost-catching adventures.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a wonderful remake that improves on the visuals, soundtrack, and controls of the Nintendo 3DS original. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first or third game in the series, mainly due to the back-and-forth of mission-based gameplay and some samey specters, but it’s still well worth playing for fans of Luigi’s ghost-busting antics.

I’m not exactly sure why Luigi’s Mansion 2 was chosen for an HD remaster over the original, but after all is said and done I’m glad this game got another chance at life. Outside of the mission structure (which I even grew to like at the end), I never felt this carried over any of the negative connotations with it being a 3DS conversion. The gameplay feels fresh, and the controls rarely gave me any issues. Having a second thumbstick goes a long way in making this feel leagues better to play than the original. They haven’t really added anything substantial, so people who have played the original won’t be met with any new surprises. I had fun revisiting this charming ghost adventure, but I can’t say it’ll be worth it for every player given the steep cost. It does have me wanting to dust off my 3DS for the remake of the original and redownload Luigi’s Mansion 3. I’m back in a Luigi’s Mansion mood, and hope we get to see a fourth game on Nintendo’s next console.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is very much a revamped version of a classic game. It’s nicely brought up to modern gaming visuals by the Nintendo bods but remains at its heart a very strong video game in the Mario franchise.

A better resolution, improved lighting and controls result in a qualitative leap for Luigi's Mansion 2 for the Switch as a portable game. The absence of the second screen is felt, the 3D effect not so much, while the body of the experience moves on without any new developments.
  40. Jun 25, 2024

As expected, the minimal revision hasn't made it significantly different or better than before, but the title is still a lot of fun even by today's standards, even if I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it. So if you'd like to catch up on Luigi's Mansion 2 or the Switch version is enough of an argument for you to check it out again, I would recommend buying it.

Despite the small problems, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD gives you a good opportunity to catch up on the 3DS classic on the Switch. If you've already played the original, you shouldn't expect any changes from the remaster other than a graphic polish and adjusted controls.
  42. Jun 25, 2024

Overall, I really enjoyed Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. The polished graphics are impressive and the gameplay is engaging. The game is infused with the classic Mario Bros. humor we all know and love, the story is fun, and our protagonist is a loveable goofball...The only thing that lets it down is the lack of extra features. It is a simple, straight-to-the-point remastering, perfectly produced for a new audience. Unless the 3DS version is your all-time favorite game, the fresh graphics are not enough to justify spending the full whack just to replay it on the Switch.

Luigi's Mansion 2 - HD manages to give you a cold sweat while retaining the effective and addictive gameplay of the original formula. The alternation between action and puzzles, in well-stocked content, is always just as pleasant. The atmosphere, both frightening and humorous, is perfectly transcribed, and the graphic and sound modernization is a real asset, especially in portable mode on Nintendo Switch OLED. Whether you've played the original game or not, Luigi's Mansion 2 - HD is worth your attention and will provide you with pleasant summer chills.

While it may be true that at the same price any Switch owner can buy bigger and more recent first party games, such as Super Mario Bros Wonder, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a love letter to the 3DS days and a very enjoyable ride from start to finish even today, for both experienced and green players. It comes especially recommended if you liked the third episode.

While the game suffers from a lack of 3D, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is still tons of fun to play, keeping younger gamers entertained with its accessible gameplay whilst older players will find tons of collectables and an exciting multiplayer mode to keep them occupied.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a treat for fans of the original game as well as those who were introduced to the franchise with Luigi’s Mansion 3. It’s been properly modernized with beautiful lighting and improved features, though there are some growing pains in the jump between platforms. Still, it provides the excellent blend of spooky and silly that makes the series so endearing.

A successful remaster of the puzzle-action adventure that retains its charming touch of light horror. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, however, doesn't hide its slightly outdated structure and a few period-specific bugs that could use a bit of vacuuming.

With the HD version, the former 3DS title has been given a new edition that really does it justice. If you haven't played Luigi's Mansion 2 yet, but have perhaps already played the third part, this is a clear recommendation. Just as much if you have not yet had any contact with the series.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is Luigi's Mansion 2 with a fancy HD lick of paint. Surprise! It looks great, and the new models, animations, and revamped visuals make for a game that's close to the glorious Luigi's Mansion 3 in how modern and swish it all is. It also controls much nicer thanks to the second stick on the Switch. It's just a shame we haven't got any added extras, then, any new means to save mid-mission, added content, or bonuses. This is 100% the best way to play the game as of 2024, there's no doubt, but it would have been nice to get something a little extra, especially given the price point. Maybe we'll get a Deluxe edition someday.

While some levels are better designed than others, and the game’s narrative depth is lacking, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD‘s excellent puzzles, light-horror vibes, and Luigi himself, make this game an excellent choice for re-release on Nintendo Switch. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is another strong Nintendo remaster which doesn't mess around with the original too much, but delivers enough improvements (particularly in terms of visual detail) to make it a worthwhile release. The controls still aren't perfect and Luigi's Mansion 3 is the better game but the sheer charm crammed into every crevice means it's still absolutely worth a look.

Even after eleven years this hunt for ghosts is still a lot of fun, if a bit stretched unnecessarily. Thanks to the timeless graphic style - now in HD - and the newly designed controls, this represents the best version of the game. Still, the price point is too high for a remaster.

I am a big 3DS fan, but I am grateful to have Luigi’s Mansion 2 on the Switch. Dropping the Dark Moon subtitle and giving it a number also feels like a specific choice to make sure this game is fully recognized as part of the Luigi’s Mansion canon, which it fully deserves to be. This HD version is not a radical reinvention of the handheld game, but it’s a well-executed port of an experience that always deserved a little more.
  58. Jun 25, 2024
    77
Ultimately, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD presents itself to fans with an aesthetic appearance of undoubted quality and with the usual, brilliant gameplay of the series. Some structural defects, borrowed directly from the original version, return to make their cumbersome presence felt and the mere existence of the wonderful third chapter ends up dampening the enthusiasm a bit about this iteration of the franchise which, in any case, remains a recommended purchase for anyone who wants to dive into the spooky atmospheres typical of the series, or is looking for a good action/adventure to take their mind off the summer heat.

Thankfully when the good professor does shut up and let Luigi get to work, the improved visuals and controls shine and will keep the player hooked all the way to the end. Don’t expect the near-perfection of Luigi’s Mansion 3, but also definitely don’t miss out on this strong, fun sequel.

    75
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is well worth a play for those looking for sheer charm and puzzling adventures in equal measure; just don’t expect too many new twists and turns as you bust ghosts in the moonlight.

    75
While it is not quite on the level of Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD offers a fine visual update to a 3DS classic. Unfortunately, unlike other recent Nintendo remasters, this new version does nothing to alleviate the annoyances of the original game, such as E. Gadd’s all too frequent calls. Ultimately, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD makes for an okay addition to the Switch-library, but it can’t be called essential.
  63. Jul 3, 2024

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a highly entertaining game, and the remaster enhances the experience with more approachable controls and modern visuals. As such, despite some of its flaws, both new players and returning fans can still enjoy the new package.

Even after all the issues I've listed here, there's no arguing that Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is the best version this game has ever known. If you've never played Luigi's Mansion 2 before and enjoyed the third game in the series even a little bit, or you just want a little more of Luigi's Mansion until the day we might get new title, I think it's worth investing your time and money on the This HD, as long as you are aware that it is a smaller and simpler game.

With this HD version of Luigi's Mansion 2, Nintendo allows players to have the entire license on their Nintendo Switch. The least well-known episode of the trilogy, Luigi's Mansion 2 still deserves to be discovered today thanks to its quality level design, but we expected more work from the developers for this version. It's more or less the same (good) game, with the same old-fashioned "mission-based" progression that does so much harm to the rhythm of the adventure. A good pick-up, but far from indispensable, especially at full price.
  66. Jun 25, 2024
    75
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is, overall, a well-crafted game. The main issues lie in its portable nature, which does not suit the Switch well: the fragmented rhythm due to missions, the local multiplayer requiring more than one console, the graphical inferiority compared to Luigi's Mansion 3.
  67. Jun 25, 2024
    75
It’s easy to see why Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD stood out in its original form on the 3DS, and even today, there’s plenty of reason to like the green guy’s spooktacular sophomore outing. That said, limited efforts to update the original material, particularly some of the game’s more frustrating structural and design choices, makes this Mansion feel just a bit creaky.
  68. Sep 17, 2024
    70
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is both a welcome port that brings another classic to the Nintendo Switch, and a game that shows its age. The best improvement lies obviously on its visual upgrading, now full of details that make us want to explore every nook and cranny in each level. On the other hand, the game's structure - more fitting for a 3DS game - and control system feel somewhat dated, and there's little in terms of new elements that deliver a renovated experience.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is a charming and spooky adventure that’s more accessible to newcomers than its predecessor. The game offers plenty of ghost-hunting fun, but its simplified mechanics and structure may not appeal as much to longtime fans of the series. It’s a great entry point for new players, but those seeking a deeper challenge might find it a bit too straightforward.

All in all, this is another successful revamp from Nintendo, even if this isn't my personal favorite of the series. Luigi is charming as he shivers his way through the haunted houses while nervously humming the game's theme song. However, I miss a little more variety in the battles against the ghosts. It becomes a bit monotonous in the long run to simply flash them with the flashlight and then drag them in with the vacuum cleaner. This, combined with the fact that the flow of the game is interrupted by being taken out of the houses every fifteen minutes, puts a dampener on the engagement. However, this can be a matter of taste and preference. Otherwise, this is a good mix of low-key and child-friendly horror and slapstick humor that can probably entertain most people.
  71. Jul 18, 2024
    70
As a Nintendo Switch release, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD manages to entertain despite the problems that eventually make it tiresome, just like the original. Although it's not the best game in the franchise, it's a title that has interesting mechanics and relies especially on the contextual narrative adapted for each region. For those who played the original, however, the big difference is in the controls. The visual evolution isn't big enough to justify the full price.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is one of the worst remasters ever released on Nintendo Switch. It takes us to scary gameplay and solving various puzzles that are so popular in the series with the charisma of our cowardly friend.

Offering the best way to play Luigi’s Mansion 2, but falling short of the crown of best game in the series thanks to its superior supernatural sequel, this HD remake is an ideal pickup for any Switch owner who didn’t own a 3DS.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD still has the feeling of a portable game that was tailored to the system it was built for, but for the most part, things have been ported over extremely well. The mission-based structure that pulls players out of the game on a frequent basis, constant interruptions from E. Gadd, and a lack of saving until stages are completed detract from what is otherwise a light-hearted and fun little adventure rife with plenty of secrets to discover and puzzles galore, albeit one that isn't on par with the first and third entries in the series. The improved visuals and controls are a boon that make Luigi's Mansion 2 a better game than it was before, but with a lack of much else that's new, the high price tag is a big ask.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on 3DS was a surprising revival for an unconventional game. Now that we've had Luigi's Mansion 3, the series has come more into its own, and the second game is neither the trailblazer nor the refined third entry. That makes Luigi's Mansion 2 HD an oddball--less essential than some other Switch remakes, but an interesting middle step in the development of Luigi's puzzle series, with its own charms and place in the series history.

Unquestionably, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is the best version of this second episode of the franchise. The remaster stands out with careful production, which makes the experience even more lively and pleasant both for the eyes and the controller in hand. However, it suffers somewhat from its aging. The arcade aspect, coupled with certain mechanics and a lack of renewal in the environments tends to be boring. In this sense, the title inevitably suffers from comparison with the third part, released on Switch, which offers a modernized and more effective formula. Therefore, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD would undoubtedly have deserved to be released before this sequel. It will therefore probably appeal more to those who have never tried Luigi’s Mansion 3. Despite everything, it is a nice opus, which has everything to restore its image after a mixed success on 3DS.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a handsome remaster of a great 3DS game, but it now lives in the shadow of its sequel. It's still a fun time, though, and a great chance for newer Luigi's Mansion 3 fans to get some more ghostbusting action in.

It would be extremely difficult not to be charmed by the graphics and animation in Luigi’s Mansion 2, as the passion behind them is practically tangible. Even the central focus of puzzle solving and ghost-catching are fun on their own. However, I cannot possibly overstate how much of the joy gets sucked out by its strict adherence to a completely linear chapter progression. It’s like a hospital painted in vibrant colors. It does a lot to brighten things up, but you can only do so much to counterbalance the sterility.

Despite some of the minor story and gameplay grievances, this is still a wonderful experience that has only been further improved with modern upgrades. This HD version's new or updated content offers only benefits when compared to its original iteration, even if they’re primarily cosmetic. Whether you’re experiencing this haunting tale for the first time or looking to return to a familiar classic, there’s no denying that Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is the definitive way to play.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD isn't for everyone, although fans of cartoonish action-adventure games or Mario in general, should be happy. But if you're neither of those two things, you'll most likely bounce off of this game, because it's many elements seem archaic.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is exactly as it sounds. It's the second game in the series with a very fresh coat of paint. Unfortunately, while the visual upgrade is a decent effort, it ultimately still harbours the same design quirks that made the original game so controversial. While it falls flat in the face of the games that came before and after it, it's a great grab if you're looking to experience some more Luigi's Mansion.

Like the mansions of Evershade Valley, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is haunted by the ghosts of the past. With Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, Nintendo had a perfect opportunity to revise the worst aspect of the original, and offer the definitive version of an already well-liked game. Instead, it feels like a much harder recommendation, especially for anyone that already played this on 3DS.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a frenetic, atmospheric ghost hunt that’s been sliced and stacked into something safe, digestible, and slow.

Fans of the original looking for a nostalgia fix and loyal Nintendo completists won’t be disappointed. But Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD definitely isn’t Nintendo at its inventive best. If it were, it would have Mario’s name on the front.

As ever, Mario’s brother is a scream, but this remaster is haunted by the spectre of its much better sequel – and the price might spook you.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is, for good or ill, the minimum that a Nintendo game's remaster for the Switch can offer. It's not essential, but not everything has to be.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a no-frills port of the 3DS game with some minor visual upgrades. It won’t win over those who disliked the original, but it’s a solid experience for everyone else.

It's still a pleasant platformer with interesting gameplay mechanics, varied and detailed unique locations to explore, a broad list of enemy types to face and overcome, and lots of secrets to find hidden in nooks and crannies. But at the same time, this HD remaster is inferior to Luigi's Mansion 3 in pretty much every conceivable metric, and there's not a strong enough sense of nostalgia here to save it.

For game preservation reasons, it’s important that Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is available to play on current-gen hardware. However, this remake does little to address the original title’s core gameplay issues, which have only grown more egregious with time. Its janky controls, lackluster visual updates, and frustratingly repetitive busywork detract from an otherwise charming Halloween adventure. There’s a quirky, silly little game somewhere in here that has unfortunately not been given the attention it needs to be very much fun. Ever the forgotten brother, Luigi isn’t likely to win any fans with this spooky escapade.
