Does not compare to Setsuna. The story is poor, the gameplay is good but it does try to jam too much in and the weighting of the game feels bizarre. I went to the final boss levelled to the recommended amount with 8-9* upgraded equipment and it took me over 10 attempts to win- due to instant death. Whoever's idea that was needs to... well you know.

This game had a lot of potential, but was clearly rushed and really falls flat. There is hardly any character development at all so you never get invested in whats happening and when they finally try to start throwing some background in halfway through it comes out of no where. This game is like a solid outline for what could of been a good game. The story is there and their are some nice twists along the way, but they spent no time in exploring the characters so a lot of the game is just really boring. On top of that the writing is pretty bad too. Compared to I am Setuna, its spiritual predecessor, this game is worse in most every way. There are some nice tweaks to the battle system and the dungeons have a more varied design, but this doesn't make up for all its other short comings. There was no need for this game to be so rushed and it could of been a really good game if they had just taken the time to do it right. If you really want a more old school style JRPG this will do, but there are so many better games on the Switch that its really not worth picking up. Expand

Lost Sphear is Tokyo RPG Factory's latest attempt to capture that golden age nostalgia, but its lackluster story and bloated systems aren't quite up to the task.

Lost Sphear can't repeat the success of I Am Setsuna. The storyline is too weak and art design does not bewitch as hoped. However, it is an excellent RPG, recommended for lovers of the genre.

A meaty turn-based combat system means this should satisfy your hunger for traditional JRPGs. [March 2018, p.74]
