Does not compare to Setsuna. The story is poor, the gameplay is good but it does try to jam too much in and the weighting of the game feels bizarre. I went to the final boss levelled to the recommended amount with 8-9* upgraded equipment and it took me over 10 attempts to win- due to instant death. Whoever's idea that was needs to... well you know.

I was honestly shocked when i came here and saw thw 69 critic review the game is a solid jrpg if you like them. You can move around in combat attack multiple enemies at once has a deep upgrade and combat system and the graphics look great. Boss fights are challenging like persona so its keeps things fresh id say a 7.5/8 is the correct score for the game cant wait to see tokyo rpg factoriesI was honestly shocked when i came here and saw thw 69 critic review the game is a solid jrpg if you like them. I've never previously heard of this Setsuna game everyone refers to, and I haven't played it either, of course. So I'm looking at Lost Sphear from a more neutral perspective, not a "I loved Sestsuna and can only compare Lost Sphear to it" perspective.

Lost Sphear just isn't that good. The story put me to sleep. I wanted to skip all the dialogue, which is rare for me; I'm a reader and

Lost Sphear just isn't that good. The story put me to sleep. I wanted to skip all the dialogue, which is rare for me; I'm a reader and I usually enjoy dialogue in games. It looks ok, but it's not terribly impressive. The biggest thing would be combat... people compare it to Chrono Trigger, but it's slower, less intuitive, and less fun in comparison.

I'd just wait to get Octopath Traveler instead later this year.

This game is super beautiful. It really rejuvenates the old school JRPG vibe that the 90s brought us, it is significantly better than I am Setsuna, and while still flawed, playing it on the go, and being able to pick up ad play and put down at any time really keeps the story alive.

While "I am Setsuna" was a solid game "Lost Sphear" is much more fun to play. Ok - in "I am Setsuna" i always saw "Final Fantasy X" in a much smaler space. Love to play it while break on work or in the evening while chilling in my bed. Yes the Gameplay is outdated - but really: who cares? It's what it want to be - an oldschoolish JRPG - and it is. The only thing where I clearly see a negative point is the price. you get a 20h game for 50 bucks is a little bit too much for this indie-feel title. But hey: as a gamer i've payed a lot more for 5h Triple-A titles. So its a fair trade in the end. If you love oldschool JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest and so on - then you can buy it. If you're new in this type of games and really want to play - go for it (maybe on a sale). Ah i forgot to mention: the soundtrack is superb! Expand

I’m really enjoying Lost Sphere. I find nearly every aspect of the game to be better than Setsuna. The only negative I can really point out is the price. If that comes down, it’s a good buy for an old school style RPG. It’s solid and engaging. Plus it’s perfect on the switch where it’s easy to play for 20 minutes off and on.

This game had a lot of potential, but was clearly rushed and really falls flat. There is hardly any character development at all so you never get invested in whats happening and when they finally try to start throwing some background in halfway through it comes out of no where. This game is like a solid outline for what could of been a good game. The story is there and their are some nice twists along the way, but they spent no time in exploring the characters so a lot of the game is just really boring. On top of that the writing is pretty bad too. Compared to I am Setuna, its spiritual predecessor, this game is worse in most every way. There are some nice tweaks to the battle system and the dungeons have a more varied design, but this doesn't make up for all its other short comings. There was no need for this game to be so rushed and it could of been a really good game if they had just taken the time to do it right. If you really want a more old school style JRPG this will do, but there are so many better games on the Switch that its really not worth picking up. Expand

I'm over 10 hours in on the Nintendo Switch version and I'm loving it. I did thoroughly enjoy I Am Setsuna. It wasn't the best rpg ever or anything but it scratched the itch (and it's still the dynamic theme on my PS4). This game is fun for the fact of nostalgia. Little things here and there that make me laugh, remind me of something from one of the classic JRPG of the 90's, etc. I don't need a lot of new invention and steps forward in a throwback JRPG, I just want to relax and unwind and enjoy a game like this. This game is exactly that. A throwback JRPG. One thing I will say though, I think $39.99 should remain the sweet spot for these games from Tokyo RPG Factory. $50 is a bit much. But I'm not gonna knock the score for the price point. The story starts off perfectly for an old-school JRPG and the pacing is perfect so far. The soundtrack is stunning. Tomoki Miyoshi is fast becoming my favorite current composer. I have to say, as much as I love playing RPGs on my PS4, this game feels like it is truly HOME on the Switch. I really think that Lost Sphear deserves more love. I really liked the story and after the first 10 hours the story shifts and it gets deeper so for me the story was really good and enjoying. The combat was little frustraiting especially with the Vulcosuits, the bossfigths were challenging and enjoyable. Overall great game and I think its up there with "i am Setsuna"

After the 20 hours you get really attached to the characters and the story gets very interesting and existing. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, the graphics, yes the graphics are not that appealing and it looks like a game that should been released on the 3DS or the PSP. Also the difficulty, I played most of the time in normal difficulty and bosses ranged from brutally hard to super easy, there is really no consistency.

I also noticed there is really no way to grind and strengthen your Characters besides upgrading armor which is kinda weird for a JRPG. Also some quality of life choices are missing, there is no fast travel, no way to exit a dungeon without walking back to the entry (frustrating in the later big dungeons if you can't beat a boss and need to spend a eternity to get back to a city) For the Story, the Story is great, it's unique and very enjoyable, BUT there a little Mechs that are called Volcosuits and they really feel like a big afterthought, they don't bring anything significant to the story. All in all if you are looking for a decent JRPG on Switch and can look past the graphics you should definitely check this one out.

Lost Sphear is Tokyo RPG Factory's latest attempt to capture that golden age nostalgia, but its lackluster story and bloated systems aren't quite up to the task.

Lost Sphear can't repeat the success of I Am Setsuna. The storyline is too weak and art design does not bewitch as hoped. However, it is an excellent RPG, recommended for lovers of the genre.

A meaty turn-based combat system means this should satisfy your hunger for traditional JRPGs. [March 2018, p.74]
