Of course, should you choose to only play once, then the game’s 90-minute length may leave you worrying about value for money. Treat it like a cinema ticket, though and honestly, it’s worth every penny. It’s fun, it’s interesting and when played in handheld it feels like a whole new genre has opened up like a vein of precious metal.

Late Shift succeeds on its own terms by knowing exactly what it is and executing on its goals. It’s a tight, movie-length, choose-your-own-adventure that doesn’t let ill-fitting puzzle elements slow it down or dampen the tension it creates so well. While player agency is limited to the core branching system, its scale eclipses other FMV productions and, although it’s resolutely on-rails, it’s a far more seamless and satisfying 'interactive entertainment' experience as a result.

The Late Shift is an experience definitely worth checking out, as the FMV style makes the wide variety of decisions and dilemmas more fun and interesting to sift through. If you’re seeking to blend the world of live-action film and video games, this is a great game to watch and play.

Late Shift is a technological beauty that shows what full-motion video games can truly achieve. Its slick plot and fast but meaningful pacing proves that the genre has some uncharted territory it can explore in the future.

A great audiovisual production that shows how to make a good FMV and that will be enjoyed both by the fans of the genre and those who aren’t, mostly because of that feeling that our decisions really matter in the continuity of the adventure.

You can't fault Late Shift too much for what it is. I'd have liked to see a few more decisions on the table for a more hands-on role as the director, but given all the scenes that were filmed, it's impressive seeing all this bundled on a small screen you can take on the go.

The acting is fantastic throughout, and the set-up, whilst not too original, is still engaging enough to hold attention. The lack of fast-forward to skip through already viewed scenes is a downfall, though, and some glitches experienced during review in terms of the number of endings recorded hold this back slightly, but otherwise this is a highly enjoyable interactive experience.

Late Shift is the latest example of just how far the FMV genre has come since the days of the Sega CD: the production values are insanely impressive, the narrative is interesting and the acting is strong. There are also incentives to revisit the game, making it a deeper experience than other options on the eShop. Players looking for a more hands-on experience will likely want to steer clear, but fans of the FMV genre will find that Late Shift sets a new standard.

Late Shift does not resurrect the interactive movie genre back to its heyday but it is a competent effort in terms of visuals and acting performance, thanks to its artists and multiple choices. Unfortunately the results of the plot choices never truly make the player feel that there is a lot of interactivity and as such, Late Shift ends up feeling like a more limited piece of gaming that it would be expected to.

Late Shift is still enjoyable enough.

It’s a movie where your choices determine which way the story goes. There are over 180 decisions to make. I watched Late Shift a number of times to find the 14 Chapters and to unlock all the 7 different endings. I enjoyed the experience, it’s something different. I will be looking for more story decision games in the future, but only ones discounted to the price of a rental movie. Paying full price for a short decision movie is a big much to ask. I have one problem with the game: why there is no pause?! just to have more time to read and understand fast conversation? Ok - maybe if II have one problem with the game: why there is no pause?! just to have more time to read and understand fast conversation? Ok - maybe if I could rewind eg 15 sec (I know it could spoil the game but I can misunderstood sth and then I can only guess...) Full Review »

The acting is great and it plays very fluidly, I didn’t notice a single pause between scene transitions. It’s quite amazing, actually. The story isn’t too original but that I will forgive. The lack of a fast forward button is really irritating though, especially on repeat plays (which you will do to discover all the endings). Full Review »
