Kero Blaster proves that going back to a genre’s roots can be a refreshing experience. While marred by a sense of strict linearity and some barren background elements, it’s a treat for those that want a solid run-and-gun title.

It does a wonderful job of capturing the feel of classic NES shooters while bringing them into the modern day with upgradeable weapons and health boosters. Throw in a handful of modes that encourage replay, a stellar cast, brilliant production values, and a killer soundtrack, and Kero Blaster is a modern classic. It could stand to be longer, but this is a game that will keep players hooked. Go give it a download!

Kero Blaster is a retro platformer-shooter that has also managed to embrace contemporary mechanics. Resulting in a challenging but fair experience that provides just enough variation to be engaging during its appropriate length.

There’s not much else to say about Kero Blaster. It looks cute, it’s simple and easy to play, and it’s put together well. For people who want a brief distraction that doesn’t require much time or commitment, this fits the bill and feels right at home on the Switch. I won’t turn down filet medallions if they’re in front of me, but a good ham and cheese can make me just as happy.

Kero Blaster is lighter fare, but the well-thought-out weapon balancing and fine-tuned platforming make it an amusing little journey. If you crave more gameplay and challenge, harder modes await, but even if you were to just play through the short initial story, Kero Blaster is still a game worth checking out.

Four years on, and Kero Blaster is just as engaging and rewarding as it was when Pixel first unleashed from within the Japanese indie scene. It doesn’t just look like the classics that made the genre such a pillar of gaming three decades ago, it confidently recreates the deep mechanical prowess of Contra and its ilk, with just a sprinkling of modern persistent systems to make it more palatable to newcomers and replayable far beyond those first few hours of froggy firefights.

The double jump has a very strange timing with respect to how you tap the buttons, which becomes problematic during boss battles as tapping incorrectly while managing several assaults often ends in instant death. Moreover, you cannot shoot and turn. To turn and shoot, you must turn, then shoot. Again, not a big deal unless you are in a boss battle. Boss battles are inevitable so this becomes problematic within 30-40 minutes of the game. Would love an update to improve the double jump at the very least, adding height to the jump as well would easily makes this an 8.5/9 out of 10 instead of a 6, maybe 7. Full Review »

Like cave story, I like the upgrade system. The game reminds me of contra but with it's own cave story like charm. However this game can get hard, especially in hard mode. There are some funny moments in the game too where you have interactions with your boss. The game may have lives but it's somewhat forgiving where you get to keep your weapons and power ups kind of like a rouge lite. The only problem with the game is sometimes the jumps are hard to make in hard mode and when you shoot your weapon, when you move back, you can't turn around. Full Review »

I definitely enjoyed my time with it - it's no shovel night but it's one of the best retro platformers I've played in recent memory. Full Review »
