Jamestown+ sets out to be a well-made port on the Nintendo Switch, and it succeeds in every way. The game was great when it released eight years ago, and the same holds true today. It’s not often a game retains that kind of staying power, and this is one title that even casual players of action shmups should add to their collections.

Jamestown+ is a strange trip through space-age colonial times. Take control of several ships with dozens of optional load outs and protect Roanoke and Jamestown alongside John Smith from the allied forces of the Spanish and the Martians. While the premise may seem weird and hokey, the gameplay is solid, fun, and is sure to satisfy shoot'em up fans for hours with multiple difficulties, unlockable game modes, and additional challenge tiers.

Jamestown+ is another brilliant addition to the Nintendo Switch's ever-expanding library of excellent shmups. Easy to pick up for newcomers and with the ferocious difficulty expected by aficionados of the genre, it's a slick and stylish shooter – just as much fun in solo mode as it is in four-player co-op – with a unique and zany setting that gets its hooks into you quickly and keeps them there. It may not add anything revolutionary or particularly new to the genre and the omission of online co-op play is a shame, but what's here is supremely engaging and polished stuff that's pretty much essential for Switch-owning shooter fans.

Those who enjoy co-op player with their shoot-’em-ups will find a thoroughly accessible experience as well. Adding length by gating off stages with higher difficulties is a miss, and a few more stages would have been welcome, but it’s still an easy recommendation as one of the more enjoyable entries in the genre. The story is interesting enough, especially compared to those of similar games. I’ve never been to Mars before, but I can safely say that it’s worth taking a trip down to Jamestown+.

Jamestown+ is a Nintendo Switch conversion of one of the finest shoot'em-ups of its generation. With its addictive, frantic gameplay and fun cooperative mode, Jamestown+ is a delightful game but those who have already played it elsewhere will find only marginal benefits to the experience.

Jamestown+ is highly enjoyable for users who appreciate a fast-paced and competitive shoot-em-up. While the game is weighed down a bit by story, and the game doesn’t allow for the Joy-Cons to remain connected when the Nintendo Switch is undocked, this title still has something to offer for those looking for an addictive game with a unique setting.

It's clearly designed with multiplayer in mind which is fine, but it's one of those games that doesn't warn you that single play is a drag. There are simply too many enemies to hit by yourself, and your ship feels quite weak. I beat the first campaign but kind of lost interest after that.
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, reminding me of 32 bit pixel games on the playstation, easily the best part. The story is weirdly interesting, but I can't get past the gameplay. This game is a vertizontal game meaning it takes up the entire screen but scrolls up. This is almost always a bad choice, and no shmup designers ever use it. Vertical and horizontal shmups keep your bullets on screen longer and give you less width to cover. This design there is simply too much flying back and forth across the massive playing field.
The game is a blast with multiple people, but that being said, you won't get far with kids or newbies as the game is still quite hard. I'd only really recommend it if you have skilled friends, then you will have an absolute blast, for everyone else there are better shmups.

There is an easy mode but this only allows you to play 3 levels which is about 20 minutes worth of play. Why can't younger gamers and newcomers play the whole game on easy.

There is then a huge difficulty spike in normal mode. Unless you are an experienced shmup fan, I would leave this game.

I did enjoy the first few levels though

This game has the genre where any mistake, any wrong decision by the developer can kill the magic that occurs between the player and the game. This game has the genre where any mistake, any wrong decision by the developer can kill the magic that occurs between the player and the game. Personally, I liked the game, but I like this genre in principe.

A short but fun game that can be played by up to 4 people. Try it as soon as possible, and suddenly it will charm you.
