A collection superior to the first, which stands out for the Metal Slug base in GunForce 2 and for two games released for the first time on consoles.

Overall, Irem Collection Vol. 2 makes three classic pre-Nazca games widely available again. These are all great shooters, but are also historically relevant as to how the shmup genre would evolve and how Nazca would form a few years later. If you are a fan of Metal Slug, then you should definitely check out this collection, as GunForce II is wonderfully unhinged.

Solid realisations of some superb, underexposed games from the heyday of the 2D shooter genre, that illustrate the immediate legacy of R-Type and the coming of the Metal Slug games.

Irem Collection Volume 2 contains two respectable run-and-guns and one intense shoot ‘em up that expose the run up to Nazca’s Metal Slug series. But with little historical context and a few minor emulation issues, the classic games here deserve better.

Irem Collection Volume 2 is less than spectacular. If the games really appeal to you, then the collection doesn’t diminish them, but it also doesn’t elevate them. In terms of value, you could do worse, but it’s not an immediate recommendation. They’re your quarters, do what you want with them.
