Super addictive gameplay. It occupied myself and roommates on LAN for hours. There's a nice variety in modes and the general gunplay feels satisfying no matter which mode you load into.

The game has some minor issues but nothing that would alienate someone from picking up this indie gem. The developers are constantly updating the game based off of player feedback. I'm happy to support

The only thing preventing me from giving it a perfect score is that the movement could be just slightly faster.

Game review for the Nintendo Switch version:

If you want a fps game on switch get this one. The game has bots now and they don't mess around in co-op or in pvp modes, they actually feel like playing with real people.

Devs treat the game very well with adding a lot of quality features, reading tons of feedback and suggestions, and more major updates coming in the future.

Attention to detail is amazing and it's fun to explore the environments of everyday locations as little toys. Game feels very quake/halo like with the gunplay and just recently got a big update with bots added that play with you in coop and deathmatch, which is a ton of fun!

The game has limited levels and around 4 game modes, which isn't very much in regards to replay ability.
You can unlock some toy characters and you spend your time unlocking skins, heads and weapons through collectibles and awarded medals buts that's about it, there is not character tiers, no xp system to achieve, no weapon xp upgrades , no skin upgrades. There is pretty much nothing.
Even when you choose a character and change its head. Add a skin and choose a weapon, if you then choose another character then you lose your customisation and have to start over which is a bit poor when you quickly want to choose your favourite skin on your other favourite characters. I do however love that you actually need a bit of skill and patience to collect the collectibles rather than just buy them, takes me back to the days before micro transactions. I do really like this game though, maybe I'm holding out for some updates and dlc that can revamp and open up the game? Character tiers, weapons xp, player xp systems, skin modifications, map environmental risks, more game modes, and just a bit more than just earn the required amount of medals and collect the collectibles to unlock almost everything. (To the developers: The world is your oyster! This game has so much potential and the sky's your limit! You could become a major contender for multiplayer shooters if you implement the right structures in place to keep players engaged and wanting to come back and grind. Weekly maps and tournament's where your can get a character and skin set specially from it (no not Halloween log in) If you want more in depth feedback then I would be happy to help.)

First off the concept of playing as a toy, against enemy toys, in very large environments to give the scale that you are a toy, is great, definitely brings me back to the Twisted Metal Small Brawl days. I play Only Solo so my review reflects that.

First off the concept of playing as a toy, against enemy toys, in very large environments to give the scale that you are a toy, is great, definitely brings me back to the Twisted Metal Small Brawl days. I play Only Solo so my review reflects that.

Now first off I like to do content value for cost. I cannot go around buying many games so I have to know what I’m getting myself for the cost. Currently there are 10 maps, all varying in size and difficulty.
From a Back room Storage closet. a garage, a bedroom, a air hockey table, a kitchen, a toy store, the attic, and even a backyard( with more to come) you definitely get a good sense of variety.
The randomly spawned weapon attachments is cool at the end of rounds. And you can even buy attachments from Toy character boxes scattered around in maps. There are 4 difficulties, the higher the difficulty, the more enemies, the harder the enemies, but you also get more buildable locations. More batteries, and more spare parts to build with. There are also an assortment of cheats which definitely increase replayability. And as a nice touch the cheats do not affect progress, so you can still unlock all skins with them on. Speaking of skins there are 6 main toy types. And each one has custom heads and torsos. As well as colors( that go with each specific torso)

EDIT: new score 10/10 old score 8/10

They added bots and third person mode, third person mode almost feels perfect and natural in this kind of game, allowing you to actually see your soldier,
They also added bots, which you can not play deathmatch with and the defense modes with,

Unlike most games with bots, these are quite intelligent, picking up items, building, attacking, you will notice each one going to defend its own hyper core at times. And fighting them in deathmatch is also quite fun,

The inclusion of the bots makes it feel like I’m playing wit other people, even while I am alone, finally allowing me to beat those much harder levels on harder difficulties without relying on searching for real humans.

All in all the inclusion of bots was phenomenal, it finally allows a much better solo play experience without online, which was my original biggest gripe with the game. I can fully recommend it now as superb. There will also be an upcoming playground survival mode map coming to look forward to.

This game has so many bells and whistles, from the nostalgic feeling of times past, to the hilarious voice of the bots, from the Giant Laser Robot to the GREAT T-REX, this game keeps players on their feet, and the gameplay never gets old, just keeps getting better and better over time. Besides being a highly addictive, inspirational game, the new game modes, from the FPS to the Over view TPS to an ALMOST Resident Evil 4-like over the shoulder view that can be from the left or right side, this game has some of the best features I have ever seen in a game. The maps are greatly detailed, and the foes remind players of when toys ruled the minds and hearts of players when they were young. This game, once the Team has fully implemented what they set to do, will unleash the full potential and fun and wow factor. My only few cons, Split-Screen, though players asked for it, I feel is not necessary today, as the Nintendo Switch does support multiple switches. Also, the lack of voice chat when playing coop can possibly hinder coordination. I also feel that with the current game modes available, the full-potential is in the shadows, awaiting the key to TRULY unlock its full, true potential. BUT, so far this game has made the grade. It's harder to recommend if you haven't got someone to regularly play it with, the player base is still fairly small and there are often no online matches to join. But check out the game's discord for a nice community & people swapping switch codes. Tip: start a game through 'host online', others will usually join you after a while. Also, bots have just been added as an option.

There's lots of satisfyingly cool unlockable skins and stuff. A lot of it is hard to get or just very well hidden, so you will need to look up guides. You will need to co-op with other people to get the best medals and unlock all the good stuff. The game feels more beatable once you unlock the better turrets to build. Me & my friend are very much casual gamers and have unlocked nearly everything, it seems just about achievable to 100% the game at this point. The devs still seem to be working hard on the game, the 3rd major patch just dropped with a lot of improvements & more are planned. That combined with the discord community & the generally wholesome, slightly goofy vibe of the game makes me want to be loyal to it. If co-op shooters & the look of the game appeal to you, you'll probably have a lot of fun with this.

Hypercharge: Unboxed is one of the best examples of a co-op game out there. I consider it on my top three 'bro-ops' of the PC platform next to Deeprock Galactic and Risk of Rain 2.

The game takes the perspective of action figures and let's you run wild with a menagerie of weapon parts and massacre other toys with no reservations (or mercy). The aesthetic is slick, the music varies from fantastic to repetitive and the maps are arguably the best thing about the title. Climbing other toys, toyboxes and products with humorous placement text gild the levels from top to bottom. The perspective really makes you feel like a toy, which could arguably only be realized to such an effect degree in the first-person perspective.

Despite the role you play, make no mistake! This isn't all fun and games, you can get your ♥♥♥ squarely kicked if you're having too much fun running around the map and not preparing your defenses. The game has a very distinct array of punishments for those who aren't focusing on the task, but has a Free Roam mode for those just enjoying the sights!

Gunplay? It's tight, but it can feel a bit punishing to be at the mercy of the spread of the basic weapon choices. This is why managing resources feels more rewarding, because the alternatives you can buy or find on the ground change the dynamic between you and your hapless, plastic victims.

Customization? This game has it in spades, from toy codename customizations (akin to call tags in Halo 3) and bodyparts you'll have a great time mashing together looks tailored around your most fickle desires. There's emblems too which is also pretty reminiscent of Halo, but they boast an alarming amount of emblems so take your time to look through them all! Skins for the bodyparts and guns? Yeah, there's a lot and most are as silly as you'd expect (in a good way).

The game boasts a set of tactical advantages other games don't- melee and reloading. These are your most important tools, and they function distinctly. Melee does damage and staggers the enemy, and your weapons can reload while you melee and swap to use your other gun! Very subtle- but very powerful options.

Climbing is the most finnicky thing to get used to, so take the time to learn how you control your jumps and managing your height relation to ledges so you can pull yourself up!

It's by no means perfect, and even the score placed here is positively biased - but as the game will have large, free DLC (and patches) in the future, with no microtransactions on the immediate horizon, the score reflects its promise.

    General:
-Standard FPS Defense Game with Gathering and Building Mechanics
-Future Gameplay modes include Tank Battle and Spinner Arena (think Beyblade or Crossfire)
-Several unlockables, from cosmetic to utility - unlocked via completing challenges
-Customize your action figure via skins, helms, weapon skins, and titles
-Up to 4 Players Online and Split-Screen Local
-Currently no Voice Chat is available, but will be in the future
-Currently no Cross-play functionality available, but MAY be in the future
    -30FPS with rarely a dip

    General Cons:
-Jumping onto platforms is difficult when platforms are (purposefully) messily placed boxes/bins
-Many unlockables are impossible to obtain via single player
-Little incentive to continue playing specific stages after all challenges are met on a stage
-Due to stages having little incentives to repeat play, finding players can be difficult for certain challenges
-Enemy drops, currency packs, and equipment are first-come-first-serve (meaning you'll often find a teammate hoarding all the money just to blow it on the slot machines - instead of using it for building up/repairing defenses... or having a weapon bought by another player while you were contemplating its value)
-Some collectibles are near impossible to reach without a jetpack (the rarest slot machine prize) (meaning you'll be forced to spend a lot of time in single player mode)
-No 'Ready Up', 'Let's Go', or 'Start the Match' quick chat (meaning you'll often be stuck in the building phase for a minute or three, waiting for the one person who forgot they could 'Cancel Repair Mode' to start the next wave)
    -No Lobby Text Chat
-No way to tell what stage is going to be chosen if you've entered someone else's room (this includes no voting for stages)
-Little incentive to turn on certain difficulty-adjusting features (Disabling slot machines/battery chargers offers no known benefits other than pleasing masochists)
-Waves are predictable after the first playthrough (little enemy pattern variance)
-No custom controls, only Default (which feels awkward) and Standard (significantly less awkward, but pressing down on the joystick to run is never comfortable)

    Personal Cons:
    -Choosing modes isn't intuitively designed
-No custom weapon loadouts, alternate weapons are purchased in-match (until wave 3, most players play the same exact way as one another)
-Unlockables are unlocked via difficult challenges, rather than shop/progression-based (outside of having fun, there's little reason to play the game again if you've completed every challenge... which can be done rather quickly if you have the right team)
-Most unlockables are extremely difficult to obtain without a solid 4-man team (once voice-chat comes into play, it'll be irritating to HAVE TO play online)
-Current selection of skins feels rather limited in style (most players are hard to tell apart outside of their titles/avatars)
-Due to skins being unlocked via challenges, most players stick to wearing their most recent unlocked skins - stagnating/minimizing unique expressions (everyone looks the same)
-Lack of markers for some key points (battery charger, slot machine, launchpads) will often force teammates (unfamiliar with the area) to run around blindly
-The energy cost of turrets are so high it's mostly never worth placing more than one down if you have a 3-to-4 man team (you'll want to save the energy for the node's shield)
-Quitting a team has no negatives (going from a 4-man team to a 2-man team happens far too often... usually they quit once they realize what stage they're thrown into)

    Pros:
-Game runs smoothly online (an uncommon trait for Switch games, sadly)
-Matchmaking is quick and can throw you into games mid-match (seeing new players pour in during wave 3/4/5 feels like the day's been saved)
-Environmental attention to detail is TOP NOTCH (when you have the time, LOOK AROUND - the little details here and there are astounding)
-The action figure models are a treat to look at (nostalgia-based, but striking)
-The amount of titles to choose from are vast enough that you'll very rarely ever run into the same one twice
-Avatar (icon) creation is moreso vast and varied
-Defense wall/trap/turret choices are minimal, but solid in variety (never feels lacking)
    -Gyroscope Aiming (always a gamechanger)
-Enemy variety is solid, not only in looks, but capabilities (easily recognizable, and evenly threatening)
-Traversing through the environment during combat (outside of thin walkways) is always a blast (it's fun to run as it is to shoot)
-Gameplay is simple, straightforward, and addicting

I absolutely love the game but on some of the maps 4 people is way too many. Sometimes it will get to the point everyone will just follow each other around trying to take each other’s kills. Great graphics and no performance issues, would love to see more customization options

This is a fun and addictive first person shooter, the game modes and weapons are different and original but... online sucks. Laggy, broken, slow, and unpleasant. There needs to be a serious fix, especially to the vs modes. The game crashes often and sometimes it’s not worth playing because of this problems, but I really like this game and I hope these problems are fixed in the future.

The only thing holding this back from being a 10 is the lack of single player support. That being said, there's a very active online community and the ability to use splitscreen is amazing. Not to mention the roadmap the devs put out for future updates, looks like a lot of good stuff is coming in the first couple months.

Finally getting a chance to play it this week, I am not disappointed. There are standard tower defense tropes like...defending a tower from waves of enemies, but the level design is very unconventional. Levels aren't just a pile of laundry substituting the place of a mountain, but rather detailed familiar real-world landscapes with attention dealt to every little elevation change. The environments feel lived in and colorful, not just by-the-numbers. The actual gameplay takes a minute to click with, but is very fluid once you adapt to sprint and jump being mapped to the bumpers. There are also a TON of unlockable customization options to deck out your little solider however you'd like.

I feel like this could have easily been a free-to-play game with options to buy cosmetics a la Fortnite, but feel satisfied with a low priced premium price tag of $19.99. The menus could use a little polish, but this also feels like the time of game that could receive long term support and tweaks, and the devs have already stated as such. The name is very forgettable, but that's the only major knock I have against it. I've had to Google the title a few times when not near my Switch.

In summary, Hypercharge: Unboxed made enough of an impact on me that I created a Metacritic account just to review it. I've been asking around and too many 'hardcore' gamers are sleeping on this true gem.

And yes it is possible (though fairly difficult) to defend all three bases at the same time in single player mode.

    1. Knowing where all the coins are to be found is crucial - their locations don't change with each attempt at a level.
    2. Knowing the progression of enemy waves is helpful as well, though there is some randomness to this.
    3. You need some weapon drop luck to successfully defend all three bases. Shot gun and laser are for killing the larger enemies with one or two shots. Grenade launchers are for knocking out a pack of enemies grouped together.
    4. Usually one of the bases is tucked away in a corner and has some natural defense. Concentrate your defenses on the other two bases.
    5. Find the batteries and install them into the base power supplies. This extends the life of each base.

    Pros:
    Stunning Visual Environments
    Hours of Content to playthrough
    PvP and Co-op Online

    Cons
Single-player could be balanced a bit better
Jumping mechanic needs to be tweeked

    Overall:
This is truly an impressive, ambitious game, unlike any other I have played on the switch. It's a sleeping giant, that I think will become very popular in time to come.

This game gets so many things right. Where should I start:

It has a ton of nostalgia and graphics are incredible (love the banging 80/90ies OST in the background). A must buy for those who love FPS and PvP! The main objective of the Co-op mode is that you must defend something called the "HYPER-CORE". You must also search each level for resources, as you can find weapons, attachments

Almost anyone that played games in the 90's will have fond memories of sitting on the couch with your siblings or neighbors, screen peeking and laughing until the wee hours of the night. Hypercharge: Unboxed captures this feeling, bottles it, mixes in your childhood, and creates a magical mixture of nostalgia for a game I had never even played.

Hypercharge: Unboxed is the couch co-op of your fondest memories, in the same way that Octopath Traveler is the JRPG of your fondest memories. What I mean by that is the way your mind has romanticized the shooters of old, is perfectly realized in Hypercharge: Unboxed.

The controls and gameplay is tight and precise, reminding me the most of Halo 3. Nice solid melee, floaty jumps, everything you loved about the classics. Platforming and level exploration is not just a fun easter egg but a core element to the game.

The maps are some of the most entertaining maps I've played in a game, and each one has me going "oh yes, that looks like my house, the neighbor's house, etc." they each have a feeling of familiarity that makes them all the more fun to explore. (e.g. the Kitchen themed level has hotwheel like tracks running between the counters to use as a bridge.) ad each level is larger than you may initially think after some careful exploration.

That said, online or offline, co-op or PvP, Hypercharge: Unboxed will bring back those feelings, and the fun of days gone by, in spades and does it with excellence.

For the ridiculous bargain asking price of 19.99 USD, you simply cannot go wrong. There are no micro-transactions; if you want that skin or helmet, you gotta prove you're good enough to unlock it. Not only that, the developers, Digital Cybercherries, already have a road map with months worth of free content coming down the pipeline.

I see Hypercharge: Unboxed being a must own for the Switch for years to come.

HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed is a fun first-person shooter to enjoy in company, where its artistic style attracts at first sight. However, its content and the lack of incentives for a single player means that its good ideas don't keep us playing for many hours.
