The switch version controls in handheld mode is horrible. This game feels repetitive and every stage is basically the same. Not worth the asking price at all.

A very uncomfortable choice that can't be changed in game settings either. It's a Deal breaker for me. Gameplay is another problematic point when not seeing the whole map enemies shoot at you by surprise. The graphics are nice and the effects of the violence and blood look good.
The music is very rhythmic and adds to the game.
The game barely has a story but connects the tasks.

To sum up a great game but not on the Nintendo Switch console.

The first game, Hotline Miami, is good. In 2020, it already feels like a product from the early times of indie gaming: rough around the edges and brutal, like a middle finger to triple A gaming companies. It's everything a big company wouldn't produce: a drug-soaked, demented bloodbath.

Hotline Miami is an aggression to your senses, starting with the fantastic psychedelic menu screen. The graphics are in the "so bad, it's good" category. Even with those minimalistic pixel graphics, the violence feels orders of magnitude more direct and vicious than it does in most big-budget action games. The gameplay is all about stealth and action, but sometimes it feels like a puzzle game of sorts: enter a place, then find a pattern to kill everybody in the most brutal and efficient way. It's ruthless, rough, and quick, and it all holds together pretty well.

As good as the first game is, Hotline Miami 2 is a disaster. The first game had a focused, narrow scope. The second game pumps all the dials up to 11, and loses its way in the process. The skeletal story of HM becomes a overly ambitious mess with too many characters, flashbacks and flash-forwards. The soundtrack, so essential to the first game's character, contains one too many bland loop. The tight mechanics of the first game become a spoiled broth of ideas where the additional ingredients never quite gel together.

Most importantly, Hotline Miami 2 doesn't seem to understand what makes a game fun. Like many people said before, being shot five times in a row by an invisible enemy outside the screen–well, that's not fun at all. Neither is having to use the game's auto-aim arrow to get a hint of the enemies' positions.

Beyond those glaring design flaws, however, the game gets even worse. Like in the first game, you must find patterns to clear out a room–but the patterns in HL2 are extremely finicky. Expect to restart levels from scratch dozens of times for the most maddening reasons: because you got jammed in the same door multiple times in a row, or because you pressed a button one frame too late as a dog attacked around a corner. There is even a borderline offensive "Ah, ah, you died" level that has you fighting nearly in the dark, and getting killed repeatedly by barely visible enemies. That's a maddening pile of steaming bad design decisions, coupled with a terrible enemy AI.

To be fair, HM2 is addictive in its own way. It's hard to say "no" to just another frustrated go at a failed room. However, you usually restart a room with the feeling that you've been punished unfairly, and your main concern is to right that wrong. That's a myrthless game loop, and HM2 is all about that.

Bottom line: if HM could be bought on its own, it would deserve a 7, or even an 8. The shadow cast by its failure of a sequel, however, turns this package into something that I can't recommend buying.

Fast paced and brutally difficult sneaking and slashing/shooting. It can be frustrating at times, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun. There are a few niggles though - the aiming is a bit off too often, there are occasional glitches that will leave enemies stuck to you or stuck outside of the screen (which means you have to re-start the entire level), and for the love of god, remove the bloody boss dialogue after you've been killed the first time - it's insanely annoying to have to click through it a million times.

Overall though, a really good game that I'd recommend to anyone who's up for a challenge.

Great game. Hard as hell. You’ll die a million times but each time will try something new and different and will push on. Loved it. Visually and musically on point with the era (80s) . Action and gameplay are excelent. I had a blast . The game is not imposible but if you are not patient and like challenges better stay away from this one. If not this is a glorious game. There are two games in this collection.
Two twin-stick shooters, rather gory and in a late 80s to early 90s style, style expressed in their 8 to 16 graphics and the musical score inspired by that era, although in an up-to-date quality for a video game.

The first game's great. I had fun killing as many enemies as possible in a certain lapse of time to raise the combo metre, even if it took me some time to get used to the controls of a twin-stick shooter, namely moving the character with the left stick and aiming with the right one. At the end the explanation why my character killed all those people was right up my alley. I'd give the original Hotline Miami a 9 out of 10 on its own.
In the second game I unfortunately hit a difficulty wall, I can't pass the second part of the 12th scene. There are constantly enemies shooting out of view and I much more often suffer a lack of ammo. It's the second game that pushes down a little my overall score for the collection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty good game overall. Good music, good game play. But... pretty bad port, I'd say. I have been fighting through one level several times, just to find one enemy outside of the actual building and untouchable over and over again. So frustrating. There is nothing you can do but start the level all over again, until the enemy is not outside anymore.... hm... pretty bad bug (-2). Controls are also pretty bad. I found myself using the wrong button over and over again, even after hours. Not sure if it is me or the choice of buttons by the devs (-1). Expand

I would give this game a 9/10 if it were possible to change the controls around. Even so, this game is addictive for its hardcore action. I especially appreciate the game has zero interest in wasting the player's time. The level restarts about 1 second after death (which is great because death is frequent). It is both strategy and action. Great game!

Awesome games based on twitch reflexes, creativity, boldness, and weapon choices. Plenty of replayability with the weapon and mask unlocks! This is one of those great games with old-school, cheap-looking graphics that you just have to enjoy the way it looks because it feels just so dang good to play!

Hotline Miami Collection arrives in physical format to our country, reuniting two of the best indie action games. The series started almost 10 years ago, and as with old good classics, they are timeless: graphics, gameplay, music... all is still over the top.
