In this game when you die you loose all your money and have to make it back to where you died to get it back. This mechanic is AWFUL. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm debating quitting the game just because of how terrible this mechanic is.

Hollow knight and Ori is the best games in my favourite genre metroidvania style of games. This one, gothic and gloomy with so much details. Perfect fast fighting and exciting explorations! So much secrets and so much unique events, you can really feel the love from the devs in this game. Great dlc!

and before yall go clicking away because this is a metroidvania.. I get it.. I don’t like metroidvanias either..
Bit I fell in love with hollow knight..
The first couple hours of this game is brutal..
you hop down the well and its sink or swim… youre killing these little bug creatures exploring the areas you can with oyur initial abilities.. and the game is just chewing you up and spitting you back out to the last bench you rested on..
this feels like a 2d dark souls game while youre getting the hand of things, helped by the fact that if you die you drop all of the cash you’ve collected along the way.. to get it back you have to defeat the ghost version of you…
thankfully though hollow knight does difficulty right,
This game isn’t unfair, it isn’t annoying.. its challenging in a genuine and addictive way..
it forces you to learn its rules, learn the patterns of the creatures that surrounds you.. it slowly builds you up.. makes you stronger throughout your journey of uncovering secrets, unlocking new moves and abilities.. slaying bosses.. and exploring this forgotten kingdom.
Every area here feels so different despite simultaneously feeling connected, they all have their own adorable little enemies that are out to drain your soul, little caterpillar worm creatures for you to save, bosses and secrets to enhance your stats or abilities..
This is such a special risk and reward game, collecting coins, attacking enemies to gain some soul juice to heal yourself and push forward inching closer to the next checkpoint, or trying to travel to the closest fast travel area to go spend your hard earned money on a new upgrade or map…
and exploring the world is such a thrull from start to finish… I felt an urge to see it all, despite the game trying its hardest to stop me with its challenging platforming and enemy encounters..
I couldn’t believe how deeply I fell in love with hollow knight.. pun intended…
this is by far the best metroidvania game ive ever played.. and every gamer type should give this game a chance at least until its first boss battle.. it was then that I fell in love.. its then when I realized how special of a ride I was about to go on..
    I give Hollow Knight
    an 8.5/10

Nice graphics, nice music, boring gameplay. This is good for an art museum, not a game.

The "difficulty" is you spawning 10 screens away from the boss, forcing you to spend 45 minutes to try a boss encounter again. Plain stupid and boring gameplay.

Hollow Knight is not just yet another Metroidvania. It is more like an open-world game of 2D platformers. And it is so much fun to explore Hollownest and unveil its history. Moving around the levels is fluent thanks to perfectly designed responsive controls, stunning visuals, and beautiful music. Every area is different and has a unique purpose in this mysterious world.
The game is challenging. It is not an easy title but it is also not super hard. If you find that one particular enemy or boss fight is too hard for you, you can go back to explore the world, find some charms or upgrades and come back stronger than before.
The game is very much focused around combat. Oh, and it does the job well. The bosses in this game are one of the best-designed bosses I ever faced (with Nightmare King Grimm being the best boss fight I ever had). Each of their attacks is dangerous but telegraphed perfectly and your character controls are as responsive as they can be. When you die - you know that it was your fault and you want to improve. When you win, after this couple of unsuccessful trials, you have this great feeling that you won with tough enemy thanks to your skills.
The story of the game is told through the environment. You will land in a mysterious world after the fall of the civilization of the Hollownest. You will find characters that will tell you about its past glory, find some items, scrolls, and forgotten places. There will be almost no cutscenes. This method of storytelling led me to browsing through the web in search of answers. I wanted to know every bit of information about the game lore that I could find. I was thinking about the game even when I wasn't playing.
Exploration in this game is thrilling as you never know where you should be going. Each time you enter a new area, you have no map for it. This is the feeling of being lost on the adventure that you won't be getting from modern triple-A games with the minimap constantly in the corner.
Although I gave a 10/10 score, there are some issues with the game I would like to mention. Sometimes the game feels unbalanced. Some end-game bosses are so much easier to defeat than some of the early ones (e.g Marmu). Some of the challenges feel more like a test for your patience than your skills (e.g. trial of the fool). The checkpoint system is also a bit irritating, as it often requires you to travel long distances to get back to the boss fight once you died.
But these problems will not change my mind, that this game is a 2D platforming masterpiece. Looking forward to Silksong.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I desperately want to give this game a 10. The metroid-like elements are honed to a tee and the highs of some of the challenges, power-ups, and discoveries are second-to-none.

But the game doesn't respect your time. Wasting 3 hours in Kingdom's Edge looking for the mapmaker. Wasting 4 hours trying to leave an area that is beyond your ability from a checkpoint. A pointless 2nd phase for the Soulmaster boss that negates the high from the punishing 1st (and should be only) phase--or the grind to even get back to him in the first place! A tedious platforming challenge in the White Palace. The list goes on, unfortunately.

FYI, I beat the game w the True Ending at 95% completion. But I feel about 15 of my 50 or so hours was wasted unnecessarily, hence the 2-point knock to its score.

My absolute highlight of Hollow Knight is the very creative way that the story is told by Team Cherry through the use of NPCs, lore tablets and other whispers throughout the kingdom, leaving the player with a giant web of loosely connected strands to string together in their own way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was difficult not to give this game a ten, but there is reason for this. The game lacks a diagonal attack. It is inherently limiting. Also, we have been able to do diagonal shooting or attacking since the early nineties, if I remember correctly. I get it might be more animations, but it forces me to be in specific attack patterns when attacking enemies creating an illusion of difficulty. I say this because the only way I can attack enemies in a left/right/up/down format. The enemies have attack patterns that move in diagonals, which supports the illusion of difficulty because I can only attack in linear patterns forcing me to wait until there the attack is done in order to attack. The environment and level design is linear, even though Mega Man X started slopes. The best part of the game is the world and the lore surrounding this game. The combat isn't the best, but it does give the player a lot to do. That might sound hypocritical, but it does work well. I think the game doesn't do enough to feel like I'm in control, but diagonal attacks are finicky, much like Celeste with diagonal dashing. It is a phenomenal journey going through this game. it feels like an incredible adventure where every step is could lead to me being put in a more difficult situation. The lack of a map makes the journey more intense. It makes it worth the effort to get the map and a quill to write and fill in the map itself. I want to journey through every inch of the world and find the hidden treasures or bosses. I can't recommend this game enough for the price point. The combat is a little limiting, but not enough be detrimental to the game. I loved every second of this game. Expand

Hollow Knight is so good. But it might be too big for its own good at times. It makes exploration so satisfying but sometimes backtracking can be a bit of a slog since most tram stations are so far apart and the map is so large. For me the character and game world were awful looking. Felt like kiddies halloween drawings with some neon thrown on. The sound wasn't memorable. I couldn't tell you about the boss battles because I never got to one. It just wasn't fun to play, or nice to look at. It controlled so well but was just so unlikeable as a game that I didn't want to play it after a very short time. It didn't give off any sort of atmosphere or vibe, just felt like a neon world of bugs. I know it probably captured the look it was going for as it seems to be trying to achieve that Halloween concept but that is all it achieved, a tacky halloween concept with no substance, or atmosphere.

Like I say the controls and the characters responses to my joypad movements were exceptionally well done but for me that mechanical response was all they got right. I don't like games that lack cohesion and character and this had neither.

Excellent gameplay, fine-tuned handling, a great soundtrack and effects, and the animation is smooth and precise, with only a couple occasional 'camera jumps' that do not affect play or movement. The game has a huge world that is fun to explore, which is where most of the enjoyment came for me. If I could rate the game based on these factors alone, it would be a 10.

The game has a huge world that is fun to explore, which is where most of the enjoyment came for me. If I could rate the game based on these factors alone, it would be a 10.

The plot, however, was unfortunately and obviously an afterthought (admitted by Team Cherry). It is dark and gets darker, sparse in the beginning and really picking up speed toward the end of the game. There are multiple endings, most of which are behind a very serious difficulty ramp late-game that has seen many a player rage-quit and none of which, in my opinion, turn out well for the Knight that is attempting to clean up the mess others left behind. Also, one of the many random NPCs is a character that is obviously meant to be disabled and is busy poking her young with a sharp stick, which some may find disturbing or even triggering.

This was a fun play until the difficulty got to be too much and the plot issues overwhelmed any remaining sense of achievement. I can only hope the upcoming Silksong pays closer attention to this. Still worth a play, though.

Hollow Knight is a modern masterpiece! It has the whole package: great art design, nice music, an isolated atmosphere with great ambience, interesting characters and totally ACE gameplay that offers an actual and very enjoyable challenge. Plus, it runs buttery smooth on the Switch. Team Cherry nailed the Metroidvania genre on their first try! This game is a steal for it's price.

There is so much more to talk about with this game, and I would love If I could talk for hours, but the only way to truly appreciate this game is to play it yourself. If you don't like it, that's fine, but I highly urge everyone to play this game, or at least look it up.

If you're looking for a game where you can get lost in the world, enjoy a haunting orchestral soundtrack, and fight your estranged soul for gold - Congratulations! This is the game for you.

Mechanics-wise, the bug protagonist handles reasonably well. He can turn on a dime, attack in the four cardinal directions, and eventually gain other skills such as dash. My only complaints are that his reach is sadly short and his jump is floaty. While there are upgrades to increase his reach, they are found a few hours into the game, meaning that most fights up until that point are hit and runs. As for his jump, the floaty quality only becomes a problem when attempting to attack aerial enemies. As soon as the jump button is released in favor of the attack button, he begins to fall.

All in all, this is a game that requires commitment. While I still haven't finished it and it isn't on my top five list, I have to admire all of the work that went into making it.

I never put that amount of hours into a single-player game, and the only games that come close to this number of hours are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Smash Ultimate, most of which have been played in multi-player against friends. This is a testament to how much is in this beautiful masterpiece. Each area is so intricately interconnected to the areas surrounding it. Each area has their own architecture and color palette that distinguishes where you are on the map. Controls were buttery smooth for me, and I've managed to beat most of the bosses without any problems that weren't my own fault. Each enemy was fun to fight, and completing the colosseum of fools challenges, where you have to fight most of the enemies you have already fought in a more perilous situation, were difficult yet fun to beat. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this game was amazing in every aspect. The different environments are amazing. The fact that you can be in the fungal wastes which is covered in spores and then 2 seconds later drop down to the city of tears this huge raining city just amazes me. All the bosses were hard (some extremely hard) but felt fair at the same time. They give signals whether it be with sound or an animation that always got you learning their move patterns and trying to figure out when to dodge. I’m reading reviews that are saying they die a lot on the boss fights which is true. 99% of the time you are not going to beat the boss in 1 try. Which in my opinion is good. If you beat the boss in one try is that even enjoyable? I love all the bosses in the game because each one feels different then the others with a unique set of moves to memorize. The overall aesthetic of the game is beautiful too. I also hear complaints of not knowing what to do next which I feel adds on to the charm of the game. It allows you to explore the whole map on your own without shoving in your face where to go and what to do. Sometimes you’ll find yourself not even trying to beat a certain boss but just walking around the map trying to find places you haven’t explored yet. It is a hard game I’ll give it that but throughout playing you start to understand the mechanics of the game and will even be enjoyable for the casual gamer. Oh and by the way it’s $15. Expand

    One word: Wow!

Hollow Knight has been one of the best gaming experiences I've had in the last 20 years, and I will no doubt play this game for many more years to come. Most of the negative reviews seem to be placed on the difficulty, level design, graphics, or some combination thereof. One of the best things about this game is the story, and I'll try and complete this review with little to no spoilers. There's so much to discover, even outside of the story, and it's way better to figure this game out on your own in its entirety rather than relying on help guides.

Difficulty - The bosses in this game range from relatively easy to brutally difficult. Depending on the paths you choose to complete the game, you can also have a harder time than others might have had. The level design of the game does a great job of pushing you towards the "default" path so nothing should really feel unfair. Chances are if you are struggling with a boss, you could have missed something that would have made that fight a lot easier. It's totally cool to take a break by looking around and seeing if you missed anything, or maybe a break was just what you needed in order to collect your thoughts and try again? A couple of commenters mentioned lacking abilities for a game of this type and I could tell they did not play the game in its entirety as they no doubt would have known about things they most likely "missed". Slow down. Take your time and enjoy yourself.

Level Design - As stated above, the level design will seem to "push" you towards where you need to go. That doesn't mean you won't be exploring, but there are certainly ways to go off the beaten path and beat the game in an entirely different order. Just keep in mind that straying off the path can take somewhat difficult fights and make them an altogether more brutal challenge. The placement of the different "biomes" throughout this little world is very finely tuned, as well are the objects and enemies within them.

Graphics - This isn't the most graphically intensive game around and I'm not really sure what people are expecting. I have this game on the switch and xbox one, and both versions are beautiful.

Overall, this isn't a game you can necessarily sleep your way through and beat. There will be trial and error, but nothing is so punishing that it feels unfair. Enjoy the ride because it's nothing short of spectacular if you really give it a try for what it is.

The Knight can also use attacks that take a bit soul (basically just mana) an do more damage than regular attacks. The Knight can also heal himself by "focusing" which also takes a bit of soul. You regain soul by attacking enemies with the nail, which creates a risk-reward combat system which is really fun to engage in. The level design is fantastic as well. The world is massive and there´s lots to do and explore. The game also looks very great, particularly the sprite of the Knight looks great and is well animated. The soundtrack also is great. It´s very atmospheric with catchy tunes being reserved for the boss-fights. The boss-fights are one of the highlights of Hollow Knight. The patterns of the bosses are fun to avoid and they really are a test of your skill. All in all, Hollow Knight is a phenomenal experience that I think that you should try. I just thought it looked cool and had some challenges. But it really did well with the backstory and enhances the world around you. I find that so amazing that an indie game can be as good as 1st party and 2nd party games. The mechanism. I really admire how they made the attack diverse. One minute you are fighting some monsters and the other ur trying to use your nail as a pogo stick. The charms fit well with the setting and all offer different things which start to make the thought of combos.

The monsters and NPC's. This is a true highlight of the game. The monsters have well-thought attacks to fit with the environment and give the place ambience and The NPC's have empathetic feelings and show great set of personal skills.

Music. I know at this point I'm just blabbing on but it is so good. The music is great. Really, compliments to Mr.larkin. They fit so well with the background and boss of the area. Its gives of a nostalgic sense for people who have played it for a long time.

Bosses. The bosses are diverse in there attacks, their own story, and their appearance. It gives off a feeling that there is more (and there will be more when silksong cones out!).

Map. The map is MASSIVE. It is so well thought about and well designed that it's probably one of the best bits about it. From abandoned depths to great cities, it includes everything.

The art. I saved the best till last here. The art style is admirable and cure, but still can be threatening and scar. City of years shows so much in terms of what they could do with their cartoony yet formal drawing.

All in all, BUY. GOOD GAME

Almost a perfect game, very hard though, so be advised!
Starts off a bit rough for my taste, but the more it draws you in, the more it gives back. Exploration is rewarded, trying out different builds is fun and to top it off the game has amazing world-building.

El juego es muy divertido aunque excesivamente difícil, muy bonitos gráficos, la duración es correcta, la banda sonora es espectacular. Lo recomiendo

Everything about this game is amazing, the discovery is rewarding yet challenging. I beat the black egg and am doing extras now. I didn’t google anything until after beating the egg, my only gripe is I had some hallways highlighted that I had been there when I hadn’t which made me miss badges and the one pale ore I couldn’t find. The tram section was high listed but I was never there.Everything about this game is amazing, the discovery is rewarding yet challenging. I beat the black egg and am doing extras now. This game offers a vast and captivating world to explore populated by charming characters, challenging foes and stunning art. I can only qualify it as a masterpiece. Would definitely recommend it to any metroidvania or souls-like lover.

A truly must play! The visuals, the atmosphere, the level design, the bosses, an incredible experience all around, would highly recommend! Its been called the dark souls of 2d metroidvanias and it definitely feels that way, don't let that put you off, the game can be tough but never feels unfair, the fact that this was made by an incredibly small indie team makes it even more deserving of praise.

In one of the most impressive metroidvanias out there, this game's stark hand-drawn graphics and expansive play actually make you alright with forgetting whatever story is going on, and rather gets you lost in the fun of exploring every nook and cranny of the map. That learning curve though...steep.

Having only recently completing this game, I am still amazed by everything in this game. The atmosphere is just incredible with all of the amazing hand drawn art and sound design. But the gameplay is where this game shines. Just running around po-going off of the enemies is just incredibly fun. The bosses are also amazing, there are over 50 bosses and all except one or two are fun.Having only recently completing this game, I am still amazed by everything in this game. Largo, dificil, divertido de principio a fin, lleno de secretos, con unos personajes memorables y con una historia adulta y profunda. Imprescindible.

I have enjoyed and beaten 20 different metroidvania but this is the only one I quit playing about 11 hours into it. There is nothing redeeming about this turd of a game. I don't understand the praise.

This game just simply amazes me. If I had one complaint, it's that the game had a pretty slow start, which kept me away from it for a bit. What a mistake I made. This game was my first metroidvania. I truly started at a high point. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone who's a fan of the metroidvania genre. I hope you all have a splendid day/night! Expand

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
