Didn't expect it to be so good. Very challenging but so much fun and the world and art is very creative. Frame rate on the Switch struggled a little bit in some of the optional extra difficult areas.

It’s so hard and difficult, but it’s worth it. My only complaints: 1. Corpse Runs (when you die from a boss and have to travel back towards the arena) can be annoying, such as Soul Sanctum or Traitor Lord, but it’s mostly fine. 2. If you have played any other before, Hollow Knight is ridiculously straightforward. Many of the highly praised features of Hollow Knight didn't existed before just because gamers would not accept such an easy design.
I mean, it it superb obvious where you should use your double jump (I mean, it is obvious there will be a double jump in the latter game to beging with). It is superb obvious where you should use that horizontal jump, it is obvious where to use that shadow dodge. And even if it wasn't already very obvious, another "feature" is that there are many ways to complete the game. This means basically that it doesn't matter in what order you do the things, that means you will never get loss. And a Metroidvania where you don't get lost is like a platformer without pits.
Yeah, I know, there are a whole bunch of people out there talking about how a big of a maze is Hallownest, but I insist. If they think that way, these people clearly didn't even tried the very first Metroid, or any metroid at all (maybe Metroid Fuzion is on par with Hollow Knight on terms of ease of exploration). Or barely any metroidvania at all.

However, while the navigation is trivial, Hollow Knight has some pretty good boss battles that make you fell you are actually playing a somewhat challenging game. Unfortunately, boss battles are like 5% of the full game. And the good ones are the dlc/secret bosses. Other than that, it is just about spamming dodge until you get a place where you need a new power, pin it in the map, move to any other direction, repeat until you complete it. Oh, and a bunch of shiny collectibles.

In my experience, it is pretty good to introduce 2D game to a kid with a decent knowledge of games in general. It has that Casino effect in which it is good rewarding you with nice sounds and upgrades whenever you do virtually any thing.

    The visuals are great.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I wish that the lore was more of a focal point in the game through dialogue with other characters or introduce some cutscenes etc. I couldn’t be bothered to read the journals so for me the game was mostly story-less.

I like that as you learn new skills you start putting the pieces together and realize that you can reach new parts of the map that you couldn’t before. There were only a few bosses which I found annoyingly difficult but the vast majority of them were a fun challenge and I like how they are all very different from each other. Obviously the style of the game is beautiful and the soundtrack is really good. Collecting things is rewarding and I have to say that my favourite part was saving the grubs

    Bad game design here’s why

Nintendo Metroid was one of the first games I played, I played it decades later and it was still incredible. It gave you a small booklet with all the different power ups you might be able to find and what they do, it explained the enemy types and the rest was up to you. For every obstacle or closed area in the game it was clear that you were missing a power up wherever that might be. It set the scene and then let you figure the rest out like any good story or narrative.

Souls like games have a unique progression system, that lets you choose how you want to play and power up accordingly. If you get stuck on one boss there is always another route and even if you get stuck completely you can keep getting stronger until you can overcome the obstacle. I actually think the Souls analogy for this game is wrong, just because it has health regeneration points and is hard does not make it a souls game. It is really an old school Nintendo game like the original mega man but with much less context.

Back to this is bad game design. Firstly this game gives no context or principle game mechanics. Secondly it confuses the player with a currency called (geo) allowing you to buy what are in reality weak buffs (charms), and you gain meaningful powerups /abilities after defeating a boss such as an enhanced dash which allows you access to previously inaccessible areas. As the game does not explain any of this you can get completely lost trying to buy these buffs (charms) as a way to progress. There is no sense of reward in buying buffs, it also creates farming which honestly is dull, but more importantly is does not help you in the way souls games do by making you genuinely more powerful. So you can early on get stuck with should I buy these buffs or try and defeat a difficult boss to progress.

Having defeated the first two bosses and what I discovered later to be an optional boss, I came to an area of the map in which I was completely stuck. I spent hours trying to figure it out, was there an area I had missed or a boss I had not defeated to give me that powerup for access. I had just got the dash ability to get in to this new area, was it a buff (charm) spent many more hours farming to buy all the buffs, even considerably boosting health. Was it the (in actual fact optional) boss I cannot defeat in this new area? What could it be, none of the above. At this point, I had to look it up. Now it was either that or quit the game. At this point I am about 20 hours in. I have played a lot of games and a lot of difficult games over the years and I do not look stuff up. It means I am defeated. Turns out it is a game mechanic that you have from the start, a game mechanic that I never used for any enemy or accessed any area, the game did not explicitly give me or hint to this unused game mechanic, but suddenly it is essential to progression. Honestly is that good game design?

Please pause for the logic here in game progression, defeat boss gives you a powerup to access other areas or just allows access to other areas (for first two bosses and large map areas of game), optional buffs (charms) you can buy which might help you with boss or areas of game. The game also opens up several what you will later discover are very hard optional bosses just to confuse you and lead you down garden path. Then suddenly forget all that, you need to use something you had all along but never used or never new existed and if you don’t figure it out you cannot progress with the game. Yes the downward slash. Someone people figured it out, many more probably didn’t. Don’t make me give up a game because you (game developer) are trying to be too clever or just honestly the opposite. If you are going to make a game based on cult games then better that experience please. This game is getting hype because it is beautiful to look at, but it’s not a great game and in no way surpasses or equals the incredible games it is trying to emulate. It’s not fun in any easy, hard, challenging, puzzle based or any other sense. It’s just confused. Went on to complete game. I have spent several decades playing games and this is a 6/10.

It has a very great atmosphere, and the landscape is amazing. From Greenpath being full of life, to almost nothing in Deepnest. The story/lore of this game is amazing, thousands of people still try to piece it together.

Me personally, the game was a little boring at first, but as you progress further into it, it becomes a lot of fun. Unlocking new abilities, charms, areas, and boss fights.

This is one of the few games that there are no parts that I’m annoyed by whenever I replay it. The storytelling is also amazing, as you slowly piece together a tragic tale of your own creation, and the fall of a civilization.

There are a few negative reviews that I eat to address, as they are made by two year olds trying to compare it to a Souls game. The learning curve is made so you have to adapt to bosses, instead of just throwing yourself at them over and over again. Also, complaining about difficulty or the few save locations across the map is dumb, because that is by design. It is made to challenge you to find faster routes, memorize the map, and locate hidden passages. The bosses themselves are creative and fluid, sometimes making you feel genius after you defeat one. Fighting in this game feels more like a dance, weaving through attacks and finding opportunities to strike.

All in all, a must-play even if you haven’t played a metroidvania before.

The gameplay wise is very fun with simple game play that can turn into complex strategy for the best of players to master. The games base game is a fun adventure that can be quite challenging at times, but never unfair. The areas of the game have been made with extreme detail, and in my option, the game even rivals games like Metroid dread, which I personally enjoyed a lot Now on the other hand some areas of the game can be beautiful and fun to explore, others can be a dread to explore, and feel more like a chore than a fun area. I personally hated deepnest, but it did its job as a hard dark area, but places like the queens garden can be horrible to explore. But, after all the positives and flaws there is a great game made by only two people with passion, I would recommend hollow knight to anyone with a shred of interest in the game, and even though they bad parts are there the good parts make up for it

The nonlinear nature of the game is truly remarkable, and adds so much value to the experience. It always feels like you're going in the right direction.

The combat is simple, skill based, and very satisfying. There's a lot of challenge in this game, and the shade system is a bit annoying, but it teaches you to be cautious and gives a lot of weight to death. The charms allow for a lot of customization, the powerups are all awesome and useful in tons of contexts. The platforming is great, and often times infuriating. There's so much to love about the moment to moment gameplay.

The world design and aesthetics deserves a mention. The art style is beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, and the lore is surprisingly deep, and gives great context for the events in an otherwise understated story.

If this was a full priced game, I would say you should only play this if you've enjoyed a Metroid-Vania before. But its like 15 bucks, and goes on sale often. Just play this game. You wont regret it.

I would give this game 10/10 if the pacing is faster. The fact that our hero can't run (although he can dash, double jump, fly, and so on) make you feel annoying when you need to backtrack to previous areas. The lack of combo in combat system also decreases the satisfaction, particularly in boss fight. I highly appreciate the charm system, which creates many tactics to fight boss and increases the replay value of the game. But again, the game makes me feel annoying because you must sit on a bench if you want to change your charms. This rule is ridiculous, because in the game you can do anything else ( reading your map, studying the Hunter's journal, etc.) without a bench. It may just take several minutes to find a bench and return to the boss arena, but even so, it greatly reduce the pacing of the game.
In general, this is still one of the best games I played. I hope the next version Silk Song can avoid these minor problems to become a flawless masterpiece.

Hollow knight uses preexisting metroidvania concepts such as backtracking and non-linearity to their fullest potential. Other than the perfect map progression and exploration, the cleanest aspect of hollow knight is definitely the combat. Every attack and ability has a satisfying weight to it. To complement the fights, hollow knights movement is nothing short of silky smooth. The jump is floaty, but not unresponsive. The dash is a joy to use, and I frequently found myself jumping and dashing around a room just because it was fun. I don't want to get into spoilers as everyone should experience this game for themselves, but every boss or mob is refreshing. Hollow knight doesn't fall into the trap of reskinning enemies with minor changes, which allows for more unique and vivid areas. The story of hollow knight is subtle but effective. It doesn't force your attention, but rewards it instead. Lore is strewn about, and it is up to the player to make sense of the world and its inhabitants. To conclude, Hollow knight is nothing short of a masterpiece. It's length is about 40+ plus hours if you want the true ending (yes it has multiple endings). You've got to constantly travel all around the world of the game, with extremely limited ways of shortcutting journeys, except for very few locations.

Some of the bosses are extremely challenging, which I could live if it wasn't for the fact that you've got to grind your way back to them when defeated (the game doesn't start you at the boss again when you die, or anywhere near). I could understand the developers doing this if there was a challenge in reaching the boss, because that could be thought of as part of the boss stage, if you will. But it's never challenging, in most cases I can get back to the bosses fine 100% of the time, so what's the point? I can't get my head around the developers' reasoning. And the best part is when you get back to the boss you've got to retrieve your "soul", and when you do that you're inherently not at 100% health. So, you've got the choice: face the boss with reduced health, or go back and grind your health up.

Grind, grind, grind. It's a cheap way of artificially making the game "bigger", and a cynical move by the developers. Fine for teenagers who have adults paying their bills and have mountains of time and patience to do this, but for working adults this game takes liberties. I've had to abandon playing it, which is a shame, because if it wasn't for the grind I'd have loved to have completed it.

The port could be better. In some games, when porting them from a PC or from older consoles, interface elements and fonts are enlarged to make it comfortable to play on a small screen. About the performance in a two-dimensional game, I generally keep quiet!

This game would of REALLY benefited from the same system Celeste has, where you can give yourself additional jumps (or just make you immune to damage all together). It would not of been detrimental to anyone else, it would of only made things easier for people like me who ended up just becoming frustrated and made the game just not fun to experience, even though it's clear a lot of detail went into it.
There is so much stigma in adding accessibility options to games, but to me, even if I was not disabled and I buy a game and i just want to have fun and enjoy the beautiful, meticulously handcrafted world.. what's the problem with that? People say it makes things too easy, but Celeste went above and beyond for people like me and I've never, ever seen anyone call that game easy. I know in my heart it's just a gamer ego thing but Hollow Knight just made me absolutely miserable, and it was entirely preventable.
I bought HK when I was slightly younger, and I was really, really good at the combat but I just could not do the platforming for the life of me. There is no reason a game should make someone cry and beat themselves up because no matter how hard they try, they literally just can not do it. That's not what a video game is about. I know they probably had a vision about how cool and epic and "challenging" it would be to make the game the way that it is, but you can't design for everyone.
Give people options, I don't understand.. shouldnt devs want as many people to experience what they've worked so hard on, even if not related to gameplay, like the characters and the immersive atmosphere, the beautiful background art, things like that? It's foolish and Nintendo-esque to demand that people play only the way you think they should.
My biggest hope for silksong is that they take a note out of Celeste's book and implement more options for accessibility. Not even just for me, but (at least on the switch version) I really don't remember there being much in what you could alter in the game. It needs to start happening because things are just becoming less and less fun in the world for individuals like me.

Hollow Knight throws its players in a whispering, obscure, mesmerizing subterranean world, Hallownest, that perpetually captivates both technically and thematically. It is a massive, sprawling mosaic of deeply distinct biomes that neatly and naturally fit together like puzzle pieces, each distinctly varied from the others. The layout of this world continuously morphs and surprises not only visually but also technically as every area offers a new level design structure, platforming mechanics, environmental hazards and unique hostile creatures to slay within, all of which perfectly fit and expand on the game's deep lore. This makes for an exceptionally heterogeneous and varied experience, beautifully accompanied by the game's subdued tracks, enveloping the adventure in an elegantly enigmatic, unsettlingly melancholic aura. Progressively, the world opens up more and more whenever a new ability is acquired, and the explorative freedom of the player gets exponentially increased with an impressive multitude of possible progression paths. Even with a couple of faster means of traversal, the nature of this progression system leads to some extremely tedious backtracking, but it's a bearable price to pay for this amazingly interconnected map. Each area bleeds into the nearby ones in a maze-like tangle that hides an absurd amount of secrets, characters and treasures. The sane explorers of this kingdom are few, but it is possible to find, resuce and befriend many of them, leading to immersive interactions that expands on the world, providing new content or merely moments of levity, furthering the power of the player's agency. Combat is definitely the less impressive side of the game: disappointingly simple and static throughout the journey, with not many active options. Bosses, for the most part, present the same issue: although pleasantly challenging, they're pretty simplistic with repeated attack patterns and a lack of true depth in their movesets, only rarely with meaningfully different phases. This, however, can be partially excused thanks to their impressive quantity and variety, just as the combat is greatly enhanced by many passive abilities unlockable and an amazing healing system that requires strategic timing and rewards good play with stronger offensive options.

With Metroidvanias being one of my favorite genres, I was excited to play Hollow Knight. Entering an unfamiliar world open to be explored however I wanted to explore it, immediately sucked me into the vast world of Hollow Knight. The little to no handholding that didn't force me down a linear path was an amazing experience. This isn't found enough in games today. As Hollow Knight, I could explore as far as I dared. This often time brought about challenging situations that were greatly enjoyed.

World: The vastness of Hollow Knight, accompanied by an explore as much as you dare feel, was by far my favorite part of Hollow Knight. I kept challenging myself to explore deeper into Hollow Knight, even though my Knight was often unprepared for the challenge. Traversing the world can be very challenging at times, but almost always enjoyable!

Combat: Hollow Knight's combat was fun, simple, challenging, and very enjoyable. I enjoyed the simplicity and versatility of the charm system provided. I was able to constantly change my builds to fine-tune my Knight's abilities to best prepare for the situation at hand.

Bosses: Hollow Knight's bosses are amazing. I was impressed by the vast amount of bosses and how unique each boss was. Each boss challenged me in very different ways and forced me to hone my skills in all areas of combat (nail, spells, mobility, charm load outs, etc.).

Story: I have a love-hate relationship with Hollow Knight's story. The game provides little explanation of what is going on/happened in Hollow Knight. There are hints scattered throughout the game, but there is nothing concrete. As I played, the lack of understanding was something that drew me into the game. I wanted to explore every corner of the world and experience everything there was to experience. But, as the game concluded, I was left with an unfilled void. It felt like the game did very little to answer my many many questions. Therefore, leaving me disappointed and unfulfilled at the end of the game. I hope the next game brings more depth and clarity to the Hollow Knight story.

Overall, Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games. The gameplay, world, combat, bosses, and story all work together to provide a fun and challenging experience. Hollow Knight is a must-play game. I am excited to see what Team Cherry does next.

It's boring but I understand why people like it. It's just not my cup of tea.

This game was made by 3 people, and yet I have spent longer in the world of Hallownest than I have in many others. The gameplay is impeccable, the music is incredible, the story is engaging, the world building is next level. I love the feeling of natural progression, as on top of upgrading your skills and weapon, you can feel yourself improving as time passes. I love the feeling of natural progression, as on top of upgrading your skills and weapon, you can feel yourself improving as time passes. Bosses like False Knight that may have once felt lake an impassable wall become nothing more than a warmup as time passes. The movement is silky smooth, and the game is incredible at creating atmosphere. Deepnest was genuinely terrifying, but City of Tears was beautiful and serene. Each location is so memorable in track and design I can't even begin to stress how great they are. The bosses are so much fun and so creative. Never before have I had favourite bosses in games based on gameplay, but Mantis Lords and Nightmare King Grimm always come to mind as fun and challenging fights that I may never forget conquering. And the world and its residents just OOZE this crazy amount of character. Of course, you don't meet many people in this deserted world, but the few you do run into are unforgettable. This game is truly a standout. Please, play Hollow Knight. Any amount of popularity it has now is not enough. Expand

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
