Even when it's not sounding like an improv group at a Bernie Sanders rally, Heroland is a gem. It's incredibly funny, the characters are some of the most charming I met all year, and its unique take on turn-based battles made a strategist out of me. I just wish I didn't need to do so much grinding to see the game through to the end.

Heroland enters the fold as the ultimate “sit back and relax” JRPG. Even though the game has hands-off combat and long-winded dialogue sections where your participation is questionable, you have charm oozing from every pixel. The self-aware humor and quirky characters make up for most of the shortcomings.

With a very funny premise and full of references to popular culture, Heroland is the perfect title for those looking for something different. Thus, although its original battle system can be improved, the talent behind Heroland makes it a game that deserves your time.

All in all, Heroland is a solid title which finds its niche, sticks to it, and ramps it up. Its humour and style may not suit everyone, but for those it suits, they will love it. While the game starts a bit slowly, it won’t take long for one to dive deep into it, though the game can be enjoyed both in small chunks as well as much larger ones. In Heroland, you won’t be the hero, but you will enable everyone else to be, and that’s perfectly fine. The game turns the RPG genre around just enough to keep things interesting, and who knew that being a tour guide in an RPG theme park could be so fun?

One of the funniest video games in years! [Issue #45 – March/April 2020, p. 71]

Heroland is a game that won’t be for everyone, as the gameplay loop is fairly short and the music as well as combat can quickly become repetitive, but it remains worth the price of admission. It is ultimately saved by a strong, witty localisation that isn’t afraid to embrace the silly premise and run with it full tilt. The game made me outright guffaw multiple times, and even when I was chasing a frustratingly rare drop, I was still having a lot of fun raising affection levels and crafting the best strategies for different party formations. For those who don’t mind oft-repeated gameplay, there’s tons of fun to be found in Heroland.

Heroland has charming character art, hilarious dialogue, and a unique premise. Unfortunately, its style can't make up for its repetitive, monotonous gameplay and unwieldy length.

More a visual novel than an RPG, Heroland's charm is in its plot and characters. The gameplay mechanics, however, feel bland and the feeling is that the player is most of the time just watching the game playing itself. It also becomes a bit repetitive over time.

Heroland is very much style over substance. The graphics, while initially a bit off-putting, are actually quite charming in their own way, with the characters and environments bursting with personality. But the writing and dialogue are the true stars of the show. Make no mistake, this is a very funny game, and you’ll soon be agonising over which of the delightful main characters is your favourite. Unfortunately, it’s not quite enough to hold up the entire game – some folks will automatically gravitate to what is admittedly a unique approach to the RPG genre, but a lot more will likely desire something a bit more hands-on.

Heroland excels in the visuals department, but unfortunately falls flat in its story delivery and gameplay engagement. It's the video game equivalent of visiting a theme park just to get cute Instagram pictures, but deciding not to go on any of the boring rides. Which, in today's day and age, might be someone's cup of tea. Unfortunately, it's not mine.

Heroland relies far too much on the style over substance, and while I do really enjoy the style, especially the Paper Mario-esque pixelated characters, I’m let down by how unsatisfying the game is overall. It’s imminently cute with a solid sense of humor that just unravels into a slog of an adventure that is mostly worth it for the charm of the presentation and not much else.

Heroland could have been something of a greater stand. Instead, this attempt at making a kind of an RPG simulator turns out rather dull and repetitive. Not that the ideas here are bad in any way, and the game's dialogues and character models are something to praise but unfortunately, the way the game's concept is implemented leaves a lot to be desired and the experience loses appeal quickly enough.

Heroland is very much a good concept rather than a good game, far too many shortcomings and and a lack of active gameplay make this a tough one to recommend. Unless you’re starved for things to play, look elsewhere.

It has a great aesthetic and i love the 3D pixelated character design but that isn't enough to make me happy with my purchase. The story is very simple, the characters are charming (to a degree) but quickly get annoying and the battle system is a waste. The characters automatically battle while only giving you a limited amount of control during the battles to make a slight change or heal a character. The dialogue can get repetitive and some of the jokes between the characters can be funny at times, but are a bit cringe-worthy. I like the premise of the dungeons but i hate the way you traverse them. it is a grid based system and its VERY basic. This game is average at best. I would only recommend it if you dont have anything else to play. Otherwise, just pass on this one. Full Review »
