Detailed gory pixel art and gorgeous animated backgrounds give this tough action platformer a foreboding atmosphere that pares well with its brutal gameplay. I love how much you can manipulate enemy friendly fire to your benefit. There's no silly precision platforming, just lots of old-school tough boss fights and hundreds of enemies in your way.

Heidelberg 1693 has an interesting and grotesque way to tell its story, and is filled with cool secrets to be found. But sadly, the graphical mess added with its gameplay flaws prevents it from being enjoyable, becoming an unfairly hard and frustrating experience.

Heidelberg 1693 is a great 2D platformer. Its occasionally frustrating gameplay is still hugely rewarding, and it’s a title that difficult to put down once you get a hang of the controls and combat. Just make sure you’re up for the challenge.

There are just over twenty levels, but you’ll fight tooth and nail to get through them. Boss battles are particularly punishing and memorable. Ultimately, this is a game I liked well enough but also find hard to recommend.
