It's certainly not the JRPG of the year on Nintendo Switch or PC, but it has charm, a strong art direction, and its gameplay loop is well suited to short games, something many RPGs will surely appreciate.

Thumbs up instead for the soundtrack, well packaged and inspired on the wings of a dreamy atmosphere, in line with the sentiment of Harvestella, so skillfully straddling fairy tale and reality.

Harvestella is ideal for anyone looking for a game with the peace of mind of a farm simulator and the challenge of combat. You'll likely feel a mix of relaxation and excitement as you tend to crops and fight off threats, all while trying to uncover the truth behind the mysterious "death station", Quietus.

Harvestella cultivates its characters and story, but other mechanics aren't quite as ripe.

The mixture of two popular Japanese genres brings a relaxing experience that, although it seems innovative on paper, in practice brings only mediocrity and a rather superficial approach to the idea of a JRPG with farming elements.

Our test of Harvestella took place on Nintendo Switch, but the JRPG is also available on PC. With a playful soul in constant balance between Action RPG and life-simulator, the JRPG alternates real-time battles, cultivation of the fields and socializing activities with your travel companions. A pleasant narrative, even if not excessively original, relaxed rhythms and an interesting artistic sector are combined with not too in-depth gameplay dynamics. For players looking for a relaxing adventure, which alternates between clashes and agricultural simulation without putting too many variables on fire, Harvestella still represents a valid and long-lived option.

While promoted as a mix of RPG and agricultural simulator, in reality Harvestella heavily leans toward its RPG side. While the idea of resource management dependent on the passage of time feels fresh for an RPG, the game's cheap story and presentation, a combat system that doesn’t feel tactical enough and a lack of customization on the farm make Harvestella a game with room for improvement in both genres.

A good mix between life-sim and GdR, Harvestella seems to be a game addressed to the less experienced players, rather than the expert ones.

Harvestella stumbles before it finds a decent pace, with the biggest drawbacks being the slow start and temperamental graphics. If you can get past these shortcomings, there’s plenty to be enjoyed here and a hefty completion time to keep you busy. While it offers an enjoyable blend of RPG meets life sim, there isn’t enough substance on either side to take the game from good to great.

Harvestella is a game full of immersive environments, beautiful music, and an engaging and meaningful narrative for both its world and main characters, which is enough to redeem the game's more mediocre elements. There are several areas of Harvestella, like it farming, animations, and social simulation elements that would have greatly benefited from more depth and care put into them, but despite these flaws the game manages to be incredibly addictive. It's easier to notice these issues when comparing Harvestella to games like Rune Factory, but standing on its own Harvestella is a fairly strong title that's worth players' time. It may not be perfect, but it's very easy for players to fall into a "just one more day" loop in Harvestella nonetheless as they uncover the mysteries of its universe.

If you like farming sims and have some free time on your hands, Harvestella is worth looking into- though it's far from flawless.

So, my scoring may seem at odds with what I’ve said, but that should also demonstrate just how lackluster and dull I found the combat system, coupled with the unpolished models and environments. Still, if you can get past its faults and perhaps enjoy it, Harvestella provides a memorable, varied JRPG experience that boasts standout characters, an intriguing narrative, and one of Square Enix’s best soundtracks in years.

A flawed but beautiful JRPG with farming sim elements, Harvestella boasts a unique and emotive narrative, gorgeous art direction, and an ambitious range of mechanics to explore. It’s slow to start but, with a bit of patience, blossoms into something truly memorable.

Harvestella could be described as one of the best 'good' games you’ll play this year. Its performance issues and rather simplistic mechanics hold it back from being great, but its quest design, dungeon exploration, and successful fusion of very distinct gameplay mechanics make it quite compelling all the same. That launch day $60 price tag feels a little high for what’s on offer here, but this is absolutely a title that we’d recommend farm sim fans buy when the inevitable sales start to crop up. Harvestella may not be a challenger to Stardew Valley’s crown, but it does enough to distinguish itself as a worthwhile experience anyway.

Harvestella’s systems feed together in a way that forces you to engage with nearly everything it offers, whether you want to or not. But those slice-of-life activities are mundane and get in the way of letting you enjoy the RPG elements on your own terms. Maximizing a day’s schedule is sometimes rewarding, but the sluggish pacing makes it tough to stay engaged for the long haul. Harvestella forces you to do a whole lot to complete comparatively little. At 70-80 hours, it’s one of the biggest chores I’ve played in some time. That’s unfortunate because the combat, story, and characters are decent enough that, in a more traditional RPG framework, they’d shine brighter. As it stands, squeezing this fruit isn’t always worth its small amount of juice.

Harvestella is more than the sum of its parts, but it tries to merge some different gameplay souls into one nonetheless, resulting in a lack of depth in any of these.

At its core, Harvestella is an exciting promise of things to come for RPG lovers as Square Enix is ready to bring its own farming sim to life. From its gorgeous visuals to its side quests, there is plenty to do and look at while playing. However, players should temper their expectations should they believe Harvestella to be a straightforward sim. This ambitious project is more JRPG than a simulator, and its pacing proves as much. If you are only looking to farm and woo locals, Harvestella will prove more than you can handle. But if a JRPG with simulation traits sounds appealing to you, Harvestella is just what you've been waiting for.

Mixing Final Fantasy with Harvest Moon feels like it should result in something more stimulating than this awkward mishmash, whose disparate elements all prove disappointingly underdeveloped.

This is based on the demo, which includes the intro so take my review with a grain of salt, this is based on first impressions. To put itThis is based on the demo, which includes the intro so take my review with a grain of salt, this is based on first impressions. To put it simply, Harvestella does not live up to games of its genre. Stardew Valley and Rune Factory (1-4) is better worth your time and price.

NPCs in the town are insignificant except for what I assume are the romance options, as they have portraits (with a few exceptions). The game has some limited customisation but unfortunately has no varying hairstyle options.

The game quickly goes downhill after the arrival of the character Aria. The game takes about 5 in game days to get out of the tutorial stage- forcing the player to sit through dialogue- and the games time management is weird, because of the restricted time of when the player has to go back to their home. And because the player is forced to sit through mostly boring drivel of a story, it doesn't allow for much freedom compared to other farming sim games.
As for the characters themselves, it's hard to cement much of an opinion since they're mostly there to info dump. But seeing as the game wants you to set off almost immediately after meeting Aria, I feel like Aria as a character didn't grow on me and sure, her design is nice but I just don't care of what she's saying, as the game hasn't fleshed her out that well.

The farming feels clunky and slow, which makes it boring. The switch has weird button inputs. You have to use X for seeds, Y for tools and A to harvest. The battling feels repetitive and the crops grow within 1-2 days after planting them. Also because of the time constraints and the odd passage of time, you'll likely find your days in the game uneventful and mostly consisting of farming for materials.

The plot then begins to feel like FF13-2, and not in a good way. There are dialogue options, but no clear indication if they impact the story, if at all and conversations usually lean towards the "we want you to answer this way". I got bored during the 5 days (15 in total in the demo), since there wasn't much freedom to learn and explore. But unfortunately the main town is boring because the NPCs have nothing new to say. Which you don't want on a game that's trying to be a social sim and a farming sim.

Visually, it's got beautiful environments and the portraits for characters are of good quality. But the low poly models of the characters end up looking funny and don't suit the environment all that much. And unfortunately, visuals can't be the only saving grace if everything else is bad. Even for a demo reel, the game felt buggy and clunky. It didn't feel very polished and didn't give me too much hope, if i were interested in getting the whole game.

Again, if you're looking for a game of its genre, go for Stardew Valley, which is much cheaper or the Rune Factory series, as RF focuses more on combat compared to Stardew and the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons franchise.

The game shouldGood stuff first, the character creation let's you be nonbinary and femme with a "masc" body and vice versa which is awesome! The game should be commended for that. Additionally the graphics are beautiful, the game looks visually delightful. There's a lot of potential in the story as well.

As farming sim, this game is extremely lackluster. It feels tacked on in a way that makes the whole experience very perfunctory. Crops grow very quickly and sell for very little compared to their seed cost. It's also unclear why you would even want to grow crops? The NPCs don't seem to know or care either since there's more effective healing items you can get as drops from enemies and resource nodes. The town is populated by nameless NPCs with only a handful of named characters that only seem to exist to sell you things or upgrade your equipment. The farming and homesteading only seems to exist to pad out the combat and story.

Unfortunately the combat is also a drag, just basic character action style button mashing. It varies it up by giving you other jobs you can switch to, but then it puts your job switching on cool down when you do it. And the first job you get is a mage with no regular attack and only a long cool down spell. So you get stuck doing nothing but running around the stage waiting for your cool downs to pop. Presumably this is alleviated when you have a lot more jobs to switch between but it makes a pretty bad impression to start.

Only play this if you really want a Final Fantasy farming sim, and that's what you're after then this will deliver! (Though to be honest, I'd sooner recommend Rune Factory 4.)

The dialogue is often clunky in English, perhaps a localization issue but hard to say. Character models are bizarre; the women are thicc and the men are even thicc-er. Everyone has their knees locked in a perpetually bent position that makes running look painful. There are voice actors, but only in the dungeons while battling. Some of the soundtrack is nice, but most is repetitive and boring. The dungeon exploration is fun, but the combat isn't anything to write home about. Generally feels unbalanced, and again, clunky. The potential for this kind of game is definitely there, but it's not in this game. Despite all the annoyances, I have been enjoying playing it, and will continue. It's difficult to care too deeply about the story or characters but for some reason I have still been sucked in. Full Review »
