ive never played a rouge/rougelite/rougelike before, but with all the hype and $20 decided to give it a shot on the switch. it's really good, I've put at least 20~ hours on it already in just a few days, which says a lot for me!! i imagine just about everyone will enjoy it.

I was fortunate enough to stumble on this game very early in its life. When it had less than 1000 steam reviews. Thus, i have had the distinct pleasure of seeing this game grow into the phenomenal piece of art it is today.

it deserves every bit of praise it gets. There is truly no game like it.

As far as I’m concerned this game is the GOTY. I got it on the Switch first and even after finishing EVERYTHING I was still craving more, so I had to buy it AGAIN on steam to get the achievements.
    - The story is amazing
    - The gameplay is snappy and fun - The weapons and boons create a lot of variety - Everything oozes charm - The presentation (music, environments, characters and ui)

I did not expect this game to be a 10/10, but it really is. Unlike other rouge-likes failure is actually fun in this game, not frustrating. You always have something on the go; whether it be a relationship with other characters (who are all awesome, ancient Greek gods or heroes), or new weapons, upgrades to the world, or to your own abilities. Every time you die you get to make progress in one of these things, so there really is no such thing as a loss of progress in this game. You're always progressing. As a result, it's not frustrating. It's just fun all the time.

Interestingly, I find Hades similar to Civilization, of all games. It has that same "one more turn" feel to it. You could easily burn away all the hours of the night just having "one more" go, and have a blast doing it.

As other have said, the visuals, story, sound design, and gameplay are all masterful. But I want to emphasize the value here. There're 6 basic weapons and each has 4 variants, so there's 24 different combat styles. And that's without even mentioning all the perks you get from the Olympian gods as they aid your escape from the underworld, or the "keepsakes" - items gifted to you by other characters which you carry with you to provide various benefits. With those included, there must be millions of different combinations of abilities, and millions of styles of play. I mean, the depth and value here is off the charts.

This is one of those games like the Witcher 3 where I actually feel kind of guilty for buying it on sale, because I know it deserves the full price. If you're not sure or you're waiting for a sale I say just buy it now. You won't regret it.

I'm also very impressed with the voice work and soundtrack accompanying this too. Having all of the characters fully voiced is very impressive and rare in the world of indie games. It helps a lot in building up these characters.
The combat is also super fun and the boons help a lot in keeping each run feel varied. I also love how progression was designed in this game. I'm not only gaining currency for temporary and permanent character upgrades but also keys for unlocking new weapons and gems for improving and expanding the starting area. Keeping a player motivated to continue can be tough in rogue likes but I think supergiant nailed it.
All in all... i'm deeply impressed and I'm thinking I should check out pyre too. Congrats to supergiant on making one of the top games of 2020 :).

If you are skeptical of the roguelite genre, Hades is the one game that will get you addicted to them. Its progression systems are rewarding, making you want to have ‘one more run’ rather than throwing your controller through the screen after a death.

The story, though simple at its core, is enthralling and makes me want to keep playing over and over to find out the conclusion to Zag’s story. I think this has a lot to do with the excellent writing of Greg Kasavin and the amazing character designs of Jen Zee. I’ve become so interested in Hades that I’ve been Googling and reading up on Greek mythology, to get a better understanding of how all of these Gods, Spirits and Monsters intertwined.

In my eyes there is no question that Hades is my Game of the Year. Honestly, if we didn’t live in a world where graphics rule awards, I would say it should be Game of the Year, that is how good it is. If anything in this review has piqued your interest about the game, please, please try it out. It is truly an outstanding, once in a generation game that should be played by everyone from heaven to hell.

Hades was a great experience from start to finish and I just wanted to mention some things I really appreciated with the game design.

The perfect rogue-lite mechanic. The idea of starting over each time you die into another random set of rooms has never bothered me in the genre. However it wasn't until Hades that I realized no other game has come close to make sense of this mechanic and master it the way Hades does. Without too many spoilers, you die and end up in the Underworld, because that's where you go when you die. Then, you try to escape the Underworld again. It's a simple nuance but I thought it made the replay-ability SO much better and more worth it, because it gave .

Greek Mythology. I don't know if it's my ignorance, although it probably is, but Greek mythology has become a massive interest of mine because of this game. A lot of the dialogues (voice acted) had me thinking "wow, I feel like that too" which is one of my favorite feelings when i play any game, and connects me to the story even deeper. There's humor, life lessons, and the history of greek mythology all intertwined with the game to give an epic storyline that just engages and entertains whoever's playing even more.

The storyline. Not just the story, but how it's implemented. I mean I don't know personally if it's been done before, but I thought it was GENIUS. You get a bit of the story - a piece of the puzzle - with every play through. I'm not sure how many more I have until I know everything about the protagonist but the way the game is designed makes you want to go back for more IMMEDIATELY, just to learn more about the story. I really thought that was a genius move by Supergiant.

All of this is without even mentioning the boons, fighting mechanics, and other great parts of this game. But something in the designs mentioned above had me blown away by this game. I've laughed at dialog's between myself and Hermes or Dionysus... cried from the story... and smiled from my success, all in the same run. It truly is a special game I will be recommending to everyone.

To add to that the developers created the "skill tree", the dialogue and designed the storytelling so well that each death is meaningful in carrying the story forward, and I have not had repeating dialogue after 40 deaths. The voice acting and world building are perfect. The dialogue and music are great. I don't know what more to praise with this game. Absolutely perfect, flawless. Expand

Excellent evocative music, good voice acting, great visuals and excellent dialogues (constantly changing with a lot of interaction) as always with Supergiant Games that with this game demonstrate their evolution. Probably one of the best rogue-likes to ever exist on the Switch.

The only thing it lacks is more content, and not because it has little, but because it really makes me want to continue playing a video game like this even with the 100+ hours that this game can offer.

I'm not that into the rogue genre, but Hades is, simply put, a masterpiece! Gifted with a fun, addictive, fast paced and strategic combat, this game is infinitely replayable. It also has tons of character upgrades and items to unlock. And the narrative... OOH, THE NARRATIVE! One of the best I've ever seen in a game. Just a few words of advice: play this game!

So this is what a perfect game feels like?
It is hard. So unbelievably hard. Yet I constantly want to go back and play more. I was annoyed when it lost GOTY, but at least it's getting great reviews from people who have a passion for really amazing gameplay.
I am not sure if it's really technically indie or not, and I really don't care. I'm too busy playing Hades ever few days :D

Hades is a true masterpiece. I haven't seen a game with so much love and passion since.... Forever. Even some of the best games I played such as Doom 2016, BOTW, Mario galaxy, etc. There are times where I can feel some lack of imagination(Odyssey), or something that was left incomplete because the devs didn't have time(Doom 2016 multiplayer) or some issue with story(BOTW). When it comes toHades is a true masterpiece. When it comes to Hades, there is nothing at all to keep it from receiving a perfect score. There are a few small nitpicks. After each death you can interact with an NPC once normally and this can be odd when you want to continue their side story but can't, and sometimes some of the god boons feel a bit unbalanced, with some of them pretty much being objectively better than others, but this is all small potatoes. Hades takes the idea of dying in a game and rather than making it a simple penalty where you respawn at a checkpoint which even the best videogames do, and instead it makes death progression. It makes you feel satisfied with dying because that means going back to Hades and talking to the amazing characters. That's another thing. The characters are all charming, with different personalities, and you interact with them in so many ways, and all the small comments and other small things in talking really makes everything feel more connected. This is an absolute must.

There are other things like the music, combat, often quick load times, pretty smooth performance, and many more things, but I think the point is made. If you have not played this game get it.
Personally I think hades being a contender for GOTY says more about AAA studios than the game. It shows that AAA like Activision, Ubisoft, and even Nintendo really need to step up their game. Supergiant worked so hard on making this game, and you can tell how much heart and love they poured into it. In the future, I'm gonna keep my eye on more indie games. I'm tired of so many games that cost 3x more than Hades make something unoriginal or boring. Hades is the golden standard of what videogames can truly be about. Play it.

Hades is a game of incremental progress, where each play through you get just that bit further than the last. It also has a great diversity of weapons and boons that mean each run is different, which gives the game great replayability. The characters have a huge amount of dialogue, the music is great, and there's a cool backstory behind the game. What more do you need in a game?

Let me first say, I'm really not a huge fan of roguelikes, Too often I find them repetitive, boring, and often frustrating. Hades is repetitive and sometimes frustrating, but fair and never, ever boring. It has a great learning curve that is challenging and rewarding; yes, it is difficult, but with practice you'll find yourself getting further and further each time. Death is not a big dealLet me first say, I'm really not a huge fan of roguelikes, Too often I find them repetitive, boring, and often frustrating. Hades is repetitive and sometimes frustrating, but fair and never, ever boring. It has a great learning curve that is challenging and rewarding; yes, it is difficult, but with practice you'll find yourself getting further and further each time. Death is not a big deal in the Underworld, so when you die, it's merely a chance to talk to everyone and advance their stories before heading back out for another run.

The gameplay is addictive. Every time I die, I can't help but feel that tug of "just one more run" because it's such a joy to play. It's incredibly responsive and never feels cheap. If you die, it's because you were bested by an enemy you need more practice against, not because of some flawed game mechanic. There are many different weapons to choose from, and with each weapon able to take on several different forms, there are a lot of ways to play and styles to master. Because of this, the replayability factor is very high, especially considering the end-game ability to enable certain options that can make the game much, much harder. If you're like me and, through many deaths and dozens of hours of play, suddenly found yourself able to practically waltz out of the Underworld unscathed, turning on enough of these challenges will make sure you find yourself again struggling to best the first boss.

The story keeps you coming back for more, too. Without spoiling anything, suffice to say there is ample reason to continue playing after you have "beaten" the game, because there's still so much more story waiting to happen. Artwork, music, and voice acting are all top-notch and as good as any game I've played. It's one of those games where you can listen to the soundtrack on Spotify and thoroughly enjoy it on its own.

In my opinion, it's the best action game I believe I've ever played. At nearly 60 hours of game time, I'm still finding myself enjoying each and every run with Zagreus trying to escape the Underworld.

Despite how long I’ve been ranting here, there’s plenty more I could say about Hades. But honestly, I feel it’s best you discover for yourself why I’m so enamored of Supergiant’s latest adventure. Though the game isn’t quite perfect, it truly earned the accolades it’s been receiving. And honestly, if they decide to implement some additional content later on, most of my complaints would be rendered moot. This is honestly my favorite game yet by Supergiant Games, and easily one of my favorite indies of 2020. If you love rogue and need something new to enjoy, be sure to put this one on your wishlist.
