I have read some people saying that is has an "insane replayability". Yes, it has, if you love doing the same all the time. You improve a little bit, buy new stuff and blablabla. But each game takes time, even more than one hour going trough the same boring world you already know with no challenge at all.

The odd thing is, the game feels short but has a very high replayability. I thought I only has played the game around 10 hours or so, but after 10 days my switch recorded that i've played for 25ish hours, like what?!

Conclusion: Everything is just amazing about this game. Story, combat, characters and lore. You like rouge-like? I believe you already own the game. You don't like it? Buy it and you won't regret it.

Bastion was my first experience playing a game made by Supergiant, and it was amazing. The games that comes after that falls flat, but with Hades, Supergiant have outdone themselves. Many reviewers praised the replayability of this game. That being said, even if you only managed to complete the game just once, you won't regret playing it.

Indie games rarely have a narrative so full and compelling… let alone rogue like games, where narrative is often little more than a vague idea of who the player character is and what they’re trying to accomplish. Hades is different it has depth, a diverse cast of unique relatable characters, and a seemingly endless story drip fed to you just frequently enough to keep you invested. The voice acting is excellent and the sheer volume of recorded dialogue is mind blowing… I suspect it puts a lot of AAA games to shame, honestly. So narratively it’s a major success - how about the gameplay? It’s… good. Pretty run of the mill rogue-lite. Pick between a small selection of weapons, hop in the action, collect randomly awarded upgrades and resources, and fight as far into the brutally oppressive dungeons until you inevitably die and get sent back to the start. Rinse and repeat. It’s fun and challenging. The enemy variety is excellent, growing and evolving over time to keep things interesting and keep you on your toes. The various buffs you collect are typically varied enough to make each run feel a bit different and challenge you in new ways. For someone who despises roguelike games, it’s likely not gonna change that… but for someone new to the genre I think there’s a good chance this can win them over and show them what makes these games fun and special. My biggest complaint with Hades is map variety. You fight through a handful of rooms in 4 main biomes. They’re all well designed, each very different and visually distinct from the others, the artwork is fantastic… but I think this is where the game feels most repetitive. Just a couple more with a branching path or two would have taken the game to the next level in making each run feel a bit less repetitive. Something like Dead Cells, where the start and end points are the same between runs but the paths available for you to take change over time. Maybe someday hades will get a DLC that adds something like this - if not, it doesn’t change the fact that hades is great and absolutely worth my time. Highly suggest giving this one a go. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and still haven’t experienced everything the game has to offer after dozens of hours. Can’t wait to see what’s next for the team behind this game, and look forward to playing other games that draw inspiration from Hades. Expand

After around 25 hours in the game, I can say that this is the best work Supergiant Games has put out.

It flawlessly achieves what it meant to be maximizing what a game can do in the space of the rougelite genre which is a genre that I don't particularly enjoy. The design is top-notch. The addictive gameplay loop intertwines with the thoughtfully written story in a perfect way.

    So why 95/100?

There could have been more variation regarding enemies. After 20-30 runs they tend to become very repetitive buuut you would be over with the game probably after so many runs so just in time to not feel a drag. And of course, the idea that you can pick it 3 months after and still get pieces of the story and still discover some new trinkets and extra goodies that I won't spoil makes up for this lack of variety.

    Congratulations to the entire team!

The game does however struggle on the Switch. In intense fights, with lot's of graphical effects, the machine is not able to keep up. This is quite annoying, as it's really when the game is most intense you need it the most to run smoothly. Though I have joyed to play this a lot on the switch, I would assume it's better on a more powerful device. Without these issues, I would give this game 10/10.

When you're just starting to play the game, Hades feels like a lot of fun. Characters feel interesting, combat is fast and engaging, and everything feels really good quality. Unfortunately, this is one of those games that doesn't succeed on being a roguelite; Hades gets very repetitive very fast, and everything goes from being enjoyable to being tedious. It's two hours of a good game, and the rest is a chore.

Perhaps if Hades had made the decision to not use the randomised nature of a roguelite, it could have been an exceptional game for me. Sadly, this is another game that everyone else will look at with adoration, while I simply sit in disappointment, wishing I could love something that I just don't.

I'm not that into the rogue genre, but Hades is, simply put, a masterpiece! Gifted with a fun, addictive, fast paced and strategic combat, this game is infinitely replayable. It also has tons of character upgrades and items to unlock. And the narrative... OOH, THE NARRATIVE! One of the best I've ever seen in a game. Just a few words of advice: play this game!

Let me first say, I'm really not a huge fan of roguelikes, Too often I find them repetitive, boring, and often frustrating. Hades is repetitive and sometimes frustrating, but fair and never, ever boring. It has a great learning curve that is challenging and rewarding; yes, it is difficult, but with practice you'll find yourself getting further and further each time. Death is not a big dealLet me first say, I'm really not a huge fan of roguelikes, Too often I find them repetitive, boring, and often frustrating. Hades is repetitive and sometimes frustrating, but fair and never, ever boring. It has a great learning curve that is challenging and rewarding; yes, it is difficult, but with practice you'll find yourself getting further and further each time. Death is not a big deal in the Underworld, so when you die, it's merely a chance to talk to everyone and advance their stories before heading back out for another run.

The gameplay is addictive. Every time I die, I can't help but feel that tug of "just one more run" because it's such a joy to play. It's incredibly responsive and never feels cheap. If you die, it's because you were bested by an enemy you need more practice against, not because of some flawed game mechanic. There are many different weapons to choose from, and with each weapon able to take on several different forms, there are a lot of ways to play and styles to master. Because of this, the replayability factor is very high, especially considering the end-game ability to enable certain options that can make the game much, much harder. If you're like me and, through many deaths and dozens of hours of play, suddenly found yourself able to practically waltz out of the Underworld unscathed, turning on enough of these challenges will make sure you find yourself again struggling to best the first boss.

The story keeps you coming back for more, too. Without spoiling anything, suffice to say there is ample reason to continue playing after you have "beaten" the game, because there's still so much more story waiting to happen. Artwork, music, and voice acting are all top-notch and as good as any game I've played. It's one of those games where you can listen to the soundtrack on Spotify and thoroughly enjoy it on its own.

In my opinion, it's the best action game I believe I've ever played. At nearly 60 hours of game time, I'm still finding myself enjoying each and every run with Zagreus trying to escape the Underworld.

However dying in this game doesn't feel as punishing since you are learning more and about the story. characters and being able to update your skills. Another awesome feature of this game is the cross saves between PC and Switch and it works excellently. If Switch is the only platform you have and you want to play a solid action game with interesting characters and great story I would 100% recommend this game.
If you do have other platforms mainly PC(doesn't take much to run this game) I would recommend that version in a heartbeat.

I also think this game did a great job with the progression system - the several different types of unlocks that you’re working toward gives a hint of that addictive grind while giving you a rewarding amount of story progression. Where the game is the weakest is the gameplay itself. It’s not bad, but after about 5 hours of playtime, it begins to feel like it’s more button mashing than anything else. It would be a game that would be fun with another person, but playing it alone makes you really start noticing the lack of precision and the over reliance on semi-mindless button mashing. Though I had a lot of fun and have returned to it for a second time, I find it to be overhyped because the exceptional presentation overshadows the simple gameplay, even by standards set by other rogue like games. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is one of those rare games that pushes the genre forward and sets a new standard of what all other Roguelike games after will try to aim for. With beautiful visuals, fast responsive gameplay, and amazing dialogue and music. Hades is the complete package and a game thats must play for anyone.

Hades main premise is that you play as Zagreus, the son of the greek god Hades. The main objective is to escape the depths of the Underworld completing 4 Levels, Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and The Temple of Styx. Each level is then broken up into rooms which after defeating all the enemies gives you something depending on whats the doors icon. They can range from gaining coins, Keys, Darkness, Gemstones, Hearts, and Nectar that are all items that you use in the game. But you can also you can receive a Boon from another god helping you escape to the surface. You can choose between 3 boons these boons are temporary and enhance Zagreus. Choosing which boon you like is part of the fun blending different styles so each run feels different. Using boons to fit your play style will help you progress farther and faster. Each player will have their own favorites as all of the gods and strong and helpful. You can also visit a Character in each region (outside of Temple of Styx) These characters give you specific boost that's always worth visiting when available. After completing enough rooms you a greeted with a boss all the way up till you vs your father Hades.

Hades features 6 different starting weapons that each have 4 different variants. Swords are the standard fast and dependable. Spears have longer range, Shields which can be used to block attacks and be thrown Captain America-like. Bows which have range and spread damage, Fist which you get up close and punch, and Guns which have ammo and grenades. Each weapon have a main and secondary attack as well as a dash attack. You also have a cast as a range projectile that can be upgraded and changed in various ways.

What separates Hades from others like it in the genre is the way it handles the story and dialogue. After each attempt you will be returned to the House of Hades which is basically you overworld in-between runs. Here you can have access to your room and mirror. Using darkness you collect the mirror has permanent upgrades that you can take with in each run. As you play you unlock more upgrades making you stronger and easier to progress farther. Each upgrade has 2 different options giving you more options for how you want to play. Also you can talk to characters who will talk about your last run or advance the overall story. Here you can gift characters Nectar that you collect on your runs. Nectar increases the relationship with that character and gives you their Keepsake which is one item you bring on your runs and can be upgraded as you use them. After giving enough nectar you can then start gifting ambrosia for even higher rewards. You can even fall in love in this game with 3 possible romantic options. Overall each character has unique and LOTS of dialogue that will not repeat for a very long time. As well with all the lines being terrifically voice acted its one of the best in any video game.

Gameplay: Tight controls Fast action and combat, Addictive hack and slash action game that plays great. Difficulty can be hard for some but its fairly difficult and dying gives you the chance to get stronger and try another run.

Graphics: Looks and runs Amazing at 60fps its very smooth playing both handheld and docked. Beautiful Chracter models and locations make this game very pleasing to look at.

Story: Its one of the better written and voice acted story ive played in any video game. Its simple concept opens up with with great characters and dialogue. Very memorable and perfect for a video game

Music: Fantastic, so many great songs you'll be sure to be humming this music and listening to some songs over and over

Replay/Longevity: Its concept of playing till you die and being able to beat the game in one go has a great loop. You can easily play this game for this game for as many attempts as you want. Beating this game the 1st time is just start and turning up the heat up gives this game a lot of longevity for months and months..

UI/Menus: Everything is well organize and easy to find. Being able to save in between rooms is helpful for picking up and playing in short burst.

Overall: Supergiant has done it again with arguably their best game yet. Its a genre defining game that Switch owners must own. Now that its on all other consoles and Gamepass theres no reason to skip this masterpiece

The biggest problem with this game is its fundamental design of repeating levels, dying, becoming slightly stronger than last time, and hoping the RNG system will give you the abilities needed to beat the game, because you cannot beat this game with any build or any weapon, it really is so narrowed down to a singular play style that attempting to learn new weapons/fighting styles and honing your mechanics is like a said, a gigantic waste of time. The game gives you barely any chances to heal, yet the gameplay and enemies damaging abilities are so unforgiving that you absolutely NEED a reliable healing mechanic in this game. It’s ironic, because it gets harder and harder the farther you reach, yet you find yourself losing more and more precious health that you need in order to keep going further. It’s just one gigantic frustrating loop that at its core, is more tedious and time consuming than trying to learn how to knit with one hand. The one and only redeeming quality about this game is the dialogue, which was actually hilarious and really well done. Do yourself a favor and skip this game. There are plenty of other fantastic games out there worth your precious time. Not this insult.

At face value, this game can be quite frustrating. The seemingly endless deaths after relatively short escape attempts bely the cleverness of this game. Here's a hint. Every time you restart, talk to the NPCs. They all have tips & tricks to share to help guide you. In doing so, you will soon learn that this isn't a pointless game. Each run means you're getting stronger. And as you get stronger, you learn more about this world, reach furher into the world and discover more about the all the wonderful characters and stories. Playing and controls are relatively easy to learn and perfect and the nature of starting an escape attempt and pushing as far as you can until you die, makes it easier to pick up and put down this game. So if you're after bite sized gaming. This game will work for you. In so saying, as you progress it becomes more and more addictive. So don't be surprised if you lose hours in it at a time. Expand

Cool rouge-like game! Fine optimization, but some fonts too small on Nintendo switch.

Funny, entertaining, addictive. Simple yet wide concept. Lots of funny dialogs, wonderful graphics and greatly polished mechanics that perfectly fit the overall concept of the game. A must-play for any isometric hack'n'slash enjoyers.

This is a genuinely amazing game, and I am addicted to it! I have never played a rogue-like game before, but easily took to this one. For me, what makes the game so great is:

This is a genuinely amazing game, and I am addicted to it! I have never played a rogue-like game before, but easily took to this one. For me, what makes the game so great is:
    1. Continuity and relationships: it really feels like your character develops a meaningful relationship with NPCs throughout the game. It is these relationships that add a significant depth to the gameplay and is key to avoiding repetition. When you die it is not simply a case that the game resets - it feels like you are wiser and the game has deepened. Each time you die, the NPCs comment on your progress, where you got to, who killed and you get to know more about them as you go and feel like you are building a relationship which adds depth to interaction. This makes the conversations feel more natural and less like a repetition (which is key to the game avoiding becoming stale).
    2. Variation and strategy development: each run is different, despite being in the same environment. The rotation of rooms helps, but it is really differences in abilities, choices etc as you go. As your boons reset at every run, each time you feel like you are engaging in the development of a strategy - learning from past mistakes in particular.
    3. Combat: the combat is fun and intuitive, but not over complication. Unlocking new weapons also adds to the strategy. The weapons also have meaning to characters you meet, which adds to the narrative.
    4. Setting and art style: the game is gorgeous to look at, and has a really rich visual atmosphere. The variations between regions adds to this.

Easily the best Switch game of the year. I got quite far on a run, and actually found myself slightly worried about actually finishing it....

Supergiant knock it out the park once again with a practically flawless game. Love roguelites? Buy Hades. Don’t love roguelites? Buy Hades. You soon will. [Issue #2, p.58]

Hades is a complete package. The writing will make you laugh, the gameplay will make you smile, the bosses will frustrate you, and the art will make you stare in awe. All of which combined makes Hades a must-play, and once you start, you won’t want to stop.

Despite how long I’ve been ranting here, there’s plenty more I could say about Hades. But honestly, I feel it’s best you discover for yourself why I’m so enamored of Supergiant’s latest adventure. Though the game isn’t quite perfect, it truly earned the accolades it’s been receiving. And honestly, if they decide to implement some additional content later on, most of my complaints would be rendered moot. This is honestly my favorite game yet by Supergiant Games, and easily one of my favorite indies of 2020. If you love rogue and need something new to enjoy, be sure to put this one on your wishlist.
