Hades isn't just a good game: it's an indie game that makes most "triple A" look like shallow, repetitive grindfests.

    PROS:

    - ASTOUNDING AMOUNTS OF CONTENT: Roguelikes are repetitive by nature. Hades spices up that game loop by surprising you at every step with an incredible amount of quality content, that lasts well beyond the final credits.

    - FANTASTIC SCREENPLAY AND ACTING: At their worst, the writing and acting in Hades are Hollywood quality. At their best, they put most movies to shame.

    - SOUND MECHANICS: All the carefully curated content and the top-class dramatic work are nice–but at the bottom of it, Hades is still an action game, and a very good one at that. You'll be suitably amused and frustrated while learning to escape the underworld.

    CONS:

SOME REPETITION: No matter how good, Hades is still a roguelike. You do the same thing over and over. This game does a great job of throwing new unexpected things at you, but a feeling of repetition still sets in after a while.

UNBALANCED WEAPONS AND BOONS: Hades is carefully curated and balanced–but even then, some weapons are so much better than others, that the game has a hard time convincing you to vary your build, no matter how hard it tries. After the first successful run, you'll know exactly what you need to "win" multiple times in a row.

Hades does an excellent job as a roguelite as well. It is incredibly difficult at first with only 1 life but as you get permanent upgrades you start with more lives and more health. These permanent upgrades help you want to keep playing more when you are stuck on a difficult boss. You unlock new starting weapons as you play, which as stated above can really change gameplay style. I preferred the gun and being further away from enemies and that plays really differently than the sword.
The graphics and music just ooze style. It's kind of a cel shaded/ cartoony look that kind of feels like a graphic novel about the underworld. The voice acting is generally well done too.
Even if you are unusually not a fan of roguelite games, I would highly recommend this game. It might change your mind. If your already a fan, this is the best example in my mind.
Scorewise, it may not be a perfect game but I am still giving it a 10. For the cost of this game and the amount of fun it is and its potential for replayabilty, it truly is excellent and everyone should try it.

Hades is another entry into the crowded ‘rougelike’ genre, but it is arguably the best yet. The combat is excellent, with weapons and upgrades offering endless combinations of play styles to be experimented with, and a variety of enemy types each requiring different tactics. Although death will require players to start again, certain items are retained to allow players to upgrade their weapons and abilities to help with the next attempt, and this goes a long way towards reducing the frustration that games in the genre can generate.

Add to this an interesting narrative, told by through a humorous and well voiced script, and you have the best game of 2020.

Excellent evocative music, good voice acting, great visuals and excellent dialogues (constantly changing with a lot of interaction) as always with Supergiant Games that with this game demonstrate their evolution. Probably one of the best rogue-likes to ever exist on the Switch.

The only thing it lacks is more content, and not because it has little, but because it really makes me want to continue playing a video game like this even with the 100+ hours that this game can offer.

And of course, cross-saves is something that makes this game even better - being able to switch (pun intended) between platforms with ease. Different difficulty levels available from the start (God mode giving damage resistance which can be switched on and off at any time and Hell Mode making it harder for you from the start which you cannot turn off later) and there're very well-designed and interesting difficulty modifiers designed for the end game which will surely keep you engaged for a (long) while and which you can tailor to your skills/expectations/mood. 6 weapons to choose from, 10 Greek gods to aid you and other characters to help you on your mission. Story and dialogues are funny and well-written, and the story has its special, highly emotional moments as well. It's no surprise this game is getting so many awards and if you haven't tried it yet, you really should, simply to see for yourself what the fuss is about. And it's gonna be worth it. Enjoy! Expand

Hades by Supergiant Games is one of the most balanced and polished games I have ever played. It is a roguelike dungeon crawler that always gives a challenge. However, this doesn't mean the game is hard to beat. At first it is near impossible, but if you keep trying the game ends up being quite manageable and even easy. This is also one of the few games where if you do what the character would do in the game it rewards you. Zagreus, the main character, is trying to escape the Underworld and would likely try his best to escape every attempt. The game rewards this playstyle by giving more rewards for bosses which makes the game more fun as you don't have to grind and can instead just play the game.

All of the weapons are fun and unique and there is a ton of content and replayability. The story is quite good as well with some of the best voice acting I have ever seen. The art style is beautiful and detailed and the lore is expansive. The world is highly immersive since there are so many people to talk to that all react to your latest run. The only flaw in the game is the repetitive gameplay, but this is easily overlooked seeing how the gameplay loop is so much fun and very addictive. If you like roguelikes you will love this game and if you don't its still worth a try as it is likely that it is the one that pulls you into the genre.

I'm also very impressed with the voice work and soundtrack accompanying this too. Having all of the characters fully voiced is very impressive and rare in the world of indie games. It helps a lot in building up these characters.
The combat is also super fun and the boons help a lot in keeping each run feel varied. I also love how progression was designed in this game. I'm not only gaining currency for temporary and permanent character upgrades but also keys for unlocking new weapons and gems for improving and expanding the starting area. Keeping a player motivated to continue can be tough in rogue likes but I think supergiant nailed it.

After 15 hours of game-play, over 50 deaths and a whole lot of fun time. I can conclude that this is a magnificent way to spend your time playing.

Here is a list of things i felt necessary to bring up when it comes to this game:

    - Music is fantastic, I loved whenever I entered a battle especially a boss that the music would pump me up so good I would be so hyped to play.
    - Game-play is fun and enjoyable. Your build up can be experimental but you can also reset it to rebuild your stats to work for you. There's also the Godmode for those of us who would more like to focus on the story.
    - Story, I truly enjoy the story. Zagreus journey is a blast to enjoy and the mystery is intriguing and kept me going back. The characters we meet is both colorful and enjoyable to interact with.

    - You will die - a lot! And you will have to start over from start over and over again. For many this will be a con. The game-play is rougelike, with the premise that you will die many times as you progress further along. But you will get better as you continue playing and updating your stats.

    - Godmode. This helped me alot. I will admit I haven't been a long time gamer, I have played a few games in my childhood but I mainly play to have an enjoyable time. If the game makes me to frustrated I will either try an easier mode but often Easy mode is never fun to me. It makes it to easy and I always try to play a game on Normal. Godmode helped me here because each time I died in the game I would feel a bit frustrated because I didn't feel like I got any further. Godmode gave me a bit of leeway. Each time I died I would gain 2 % resistance. It will continue to give you this bonus until you cap it of at 80% resistanse damage. This honestly helped me alot. It gave me some breathing space as I progressed through the game, but it did NOT make the rest of the playthrough easier. It allowed me to play on my terms and I could at anytime turn of the god mode. This also allowed me to learn the game mechanics in my own time.

Who I would recommend this to?
To you who likes Rougelike games, or would like to try a rougelike game. For us who enjoy a good story to your games and a gameplay which will both frustrate you but also fulfill you.
If you however find the idea of dying over and over again and starting over at square one everytime. Then I would not recommend this game to you.

This gentle increase in power as you play the game, alongside knowledge and mechanical skill allows players to break through the end at the point where it feels best. Never dragging it out when it is too easy, and rarely allowing a brick wall when it is too hard. It may take longer to finish for less skilled players, but they are given the opportunity to overcome, to feel balanced challenge, a stark contrast to some other games that follow in the footsteps of Dark Souls. And when you do beat it for the first time, the beautiful scenery and soundtrack that follows makes you feel all the powerful emotions that Zagreus does, making you want to do it again immediately. This is easily one of the best games of the year.

I turned that mode on to make it easier and the game designers refused that. I don't want to grind out forever on your game. I'm fine with needing to die to repeat conversations with people to move the story along in an organic way, that's cool. But what is the point of an easy mode if you negate it by making it harder as the damage resistance increases? I've tried Bastion, Transistor, and Hades and I don't recommend any of them. They all have good elements but fatal flaws that ruin the fun. Go play Don't Starve, Stardew Valley instead, and Mark of the Ninja instead, those are truly good games. Expand

    - god mode - it's great for people who don't have a lot of time/patience to grind but want to enjoy the story/game

    bad:
    - mostly my personal preferences, but i didn't like the storytelling/characterization near the end of the game. the ending was really unsatisfactory to me
    - personal preference again, but i lost motivation after the official ending. going through the runs to 'test security' just kinda feels eh

I heard good things about this. But a lot of times it’s just hype (to me). It’s not bad. The way the story revolves around your gameplay is a nice touch. I am playing on the Switch so a lot of it is little characters and enemies running around. Not the most detail. I did see they made the Greek goddess Athena black. lol. It wasn’t until some podcaster mentioned how they loved that that I realized it though. If Hollywood is doing it you know gaming will. Besides, making someone’s color different is okay as long as it’s from a light skin person. Cries of white washing will happen if/when it’s the other way. Never for the other way (Annie, little mermaid, numerous comic book characters etc). Expand

Combat is also very very straight forward, and a lot of times there’s so many effects on the screen I can’t even tell if I’m about to get hit. What’s up wit h that?

Hades is a true masterpiece. I haven't seen a game with so much love and passion since.... Forever. Even some of the best games I played such as Doom 2016, BOTW, Mario galaxy, etc. There are times where I can feel some lack of imagination(Odyssey), or something that was left incomplete because the devs didn't have time(Doom 2016 multiplayer) or some issue with story(BOTW). When it comes to Hades, there is nothing at all to keep it from receiving a perfect score. There are a few small nitpicks. After each death you can interact with an NPC once normally and this can be odd when you want to continue their side story but can't, and sometimes some of the god boons feel a bit unbalanced, with some of them pretty much being objectively better than others, but this is all small potatoes. Hades takes the idea of dying in a game and rather than making it a simple penalty where you respawn at a checkpoint which even the best videogames do, and instead it makes death progression. It makes you feel satisfied with dying because that means going back to Hades and talking to the amazing characters. That's another thing. The characters are all charming, with different personalities, and you interact with them in so many ways, and all the small comments and other small things in talking really makes everything feel more connected. This is an absolute must.

There are other things like the music, combat, often quick load times, pretty smooth performance, and many more things, but I think the point is made. If you have not played this game get it.
Personally I think hades being a contender for GOTY says more about AAA studios than the game. It shows that AAA like Activision, Ubisoft, and even Nintendo really need to step up their game. Supergiant worked so hard on making this game, and you can tell how much heart and love they poured into it. In the future, I'm gonna keep my eye on more indie games. I'm tired of so many games that cost 3x more than Hades make something unoriginal or boring. Hades is the golden standard of what videogames can truly be about. Play it.

Hades was a great experience from start to finish and I just wanted to mention some things I really appreciated with the game design.

The perfect rogue-lite mechanic. The idea of starting over each time you die into another random set of rooms has never bothered me in the genre. However it wasn't until Hades that I realized no other game has come close to make sense of this mechanic and master it the way Hades does. Without too many spoilers, you die and end up in the Underworld, because that's where you go when you die. Then, you try to escape the Underworld again. It's a simple nuance but I thought it made the replay-ability SO much better and more worth it, because it gave .

Greek Mythology. I don't know if it's my ignorance, although it probably is, but Greek mythology has become a massive interest of mine because of this game. A lot of the dialogues (voice acted) had me thinking "wow, I feel like that too" which is one of my favorite feelings when i play any game, and connects me to the story even deeper. There's humor, life lessons, and the history of greek mythology all intertwined with the game to give an epic storyline that just engages and entertains whoever's playing even more.

The storyline. Not just the story, but how it's implemented. I mean I don't know personally if it's been done before, but I thought it was GENIUS. You get a bit of the story - a piece of the puzzle - with every play through. I'm not sure how many more I have until I know everything about the protagonist but the way the game is designed makes you want to go back for more IMMEDIATELY, just to learn more about the story. I really thought that was a genius move by Supergiant.

All of this is without even mentioning the boons, fighting mechanics, and other great parts of this game. But something in the designs mentioned above had me blown away by this game. I've laughed at dialog's between myself and Hermes or Dionysus... cried from the story... and smiled from my success, all in the same run. It truly is a special game I will be recommending to everyone.

The reasons to play this game are to experience the great characters / writing, and to experience the dynamic "boon" system where you shape your combat strategy by choosing among three boons after each sub-stage. Boon synergy and the impact of your choices is at the core of this game.

This game's flaw is that it spaces the weapon / character upgrades out too thin. After finally "beating" the game for the first time, I felt like I only uncovered 70% of the content, and acquired only 50% of it all. The game is long enough and doesn't need to withhold upgrades to artificially add "end-game content."

I usually dont play these type of games but omg is hades incredibly fun. I have it on nintendo switch and the rinse and repeat of the games play style is so addicting and fun. It's totally worth playing and its cheap.

This is a masterpiece, and to me on Switch it goes with Zelda BOTW, Celeste, or Undertale, on the "incredible games" shelf. I played (and enjoyed) Bastion years ago but had not followed the studio at all so I didn't know about Pyre and Transistor, but with this title I think they will definitely enter the world of big studios. This game is on another level.

    - Dialogue pretty much never repeats (I'm at over 160 runs, and seriously they have written and acted stuff for the most unexpected situations), voice acting is super solid and full of life
    - The OST is a masterpiece and fades amazingly with gameplay and story
    - Weapons that you dismiss at first become absolutely fantastic in very different playstyles once you embrace the positive synergies (make different choices and you will be blown away by bonuses and weapons you completely dismissed)
    - For anybody struggling or with disabilities the "God mode" allows ramping down difficulty to enjoy the story (while still earning it)
    - It's funny (with a lot of contextual stuff referring to your encounters or previous lives etc)
    - It's beautiful, it's fluid (with a slight exception for completely insane rooms or difficulty levels where dozens of things are exploding on-screen at once)
    - The story is incredibly well layered and connected to greek mythology
    - There's a story, and there's more, and then more
    - Even when you're really done with the story, you still have a good reason to keep playing (from a story perspective as well as for the completionist aspect)
    - The "heat" system (adding different kinds of difficulty for your run in exchange for rewards) is well thought out and adds to the challenge once you're comfortable with the "normal" game. If you think you know the bosses and enemies then add some heat and discover new ones.

I've encountered maybe 3 minor bugs (visual mostly) during all that time (and nothing preventing me from playing or even messing with my progress).
I'm still unlocking interactions with some characters and completing the list of prophecies (so I'm far from done with any cosmetic or achievement stuff, for which I have less interest anyway). And still discovering ways to use the weapons differently, and to make boons interact in new ways.

That game is worth the "full" price of typical Switch games so its normal price is a discount really.
Supergiant said they won't do DLCs or a sequel or anything like that but honestly I hope they reconsider.

Also, it's annoying how you can't gift your interest whenever they're talking to someone else beforehand. This results in an excessive amount of playthroughs just to continue your relationship imo. They should have allowed you to gift whenever and cut down the # of playthroughs to 4 or 5 for the true ending. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is not a GOTY contender; it doesn't even break the year's top 10 games.

Ok, still here? Good, enjoy the review, not clouded the majority hivemind.

I like to start my reviews with the things I enjoyed. Generally, that IS the most highlight but then base everything on—superficial things took way beyond what really matters while ignoring all the glaring problems underneath.

    Positives:

Music- Really well crafted. Orchestrated tunes, as well as the pieces with lyrics, are all great. I found myself sitting around Eurydice sing plenty of times. Some of the pieces set up a boss fight, awesome, and gets your blood pumping (The first few times). It wears off after you hear the same thing 10 times.

Voice acting: Good, Eurdiyce in particular, as well as Thanatos and Achillies.Quirky dialogue is really great in many exchanges; Thesus and Zag got a laugh out of me a couple of times. Zag's responses with Tisiphone got me to laugh as well.

Side Stories: Fun, though, while I enjoyed unlocking parts, not a single one convinced me to finish them after getting the true ending.

Combat: It's a roguelike. It's quite fun for the first hour or two.

    ___________________________________________

    Negatives:
Combat: It's a roguelike; it's quite fun for the first hour or two. Weapons are both fun and excruciatingly bad. This isometric, procedurally generated dungeon scroller and some weapons are crafted to not work on this plane. The sword is a 4-way weapon on a platform that is anything but. The bow might be the stupidest weapon in the game to work with by far as a base weapon. In a game that demands you zip around enemies like a madperson, having to charge your basic attack makes it unfun.

Main Story: The first time I cleared the game, and I learned where it was going, I went "OH! Intrigue" by the 10th time? There was no intrigue to any of the threads that the narrative eluded to. If there are and they are in the side missions, the game doesn't sell itself well to do the same thing over and over and over again to get the complete explanation(s). I completed the entire main story in 38 runs; if you can't settle the entire thing by then, you failed.

Voice Acting: Sure, it's well-acted, but the delivery by the actors wasn't great. I get someone like Zagreus is supposed to be a moody angst-ridden character. But places where he needed to emote, he didn't, and it happened a lot. Some of the Gods are either Hammy or way overplayed. Megaera was possibly one of the worst offenders here by her willowy delivery that grated on my nerves every time I had to talk to her.

Items/costs: Inflated costs that beg you to play this thing forever. It's not worth dumping hundreds of hours. Again, the combat is fun, but that lasts for like two hours, at most. After you hit a threshold with weapon upgrades and shadow, plus figuring out to beef up your HP as fast as you can in the run, you end up in this droll, boring slog of doing the same thing over and over because deviating from it doesn't freshen up the game; it's purposely choosing the least efficient path to break up the monotony. Force concentration, you're doing this in this game, or you're not playing it right.

Then there is the expansion of both the House of Hades and the material costs to build relationships. The tiny amount of gems and diamonds to unlock much of the house put way too much emphasis on the currency and not the thing you bought. Using the hard-earned currency made the thing you spent it on underwhelming. It's almost like the game mocking you for working hard for a cosmetic item that does nothing.

Earning Nectar feels the same way, but worse in some cases, but there are just so many characters you have to both give it to AND how many you have to give to each, and if you're lucky; you might 3 in a run, sometimes you'll get none. No thanks, I'm good; I don't want to keep doing the same thing and over again for a dribble of content.

Harder Difficulties: You can paint a turd up; however, you want; it's still a turd. Pickable hindrances to make things "More challenging" is lazy. If you really wanted to give players added challenges, you should have just had more games across the board.

Conclusion: Hades is a fun game that caps out at being fun around 10 hours, at most. Once you complete the main story, nothing else really has enough weight in my opinion to go on. If you enjoy the monotony of endlessly doing the same content again and again, the game provides it, but not for anyone else. Put down the controller and move onto something new.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is definitely one of the few good, polished games released on the Switch lately. It's not very expensive for its degree of polish, too. Having said that, I dont think it deserves the many 10/10 scores it has been getting either and I'll try to explain why.

Let me start with the story. By chosing an intruiging setting, Supergiant managed to incorporate the cycle of life and death into the story in a fashion similar to Dark Souls. As weird as it sounds, this really helps with the flow and immersion, since playing feels like a constant battle rather than a repeating game. The game comes with A TON of well written and voice-acted lines that comment on your last runs and progress, further increasing this feeling of consistency. Besides this living world however, the story itself feels fairly boring and cookie-cutter. It tries to be character driven, but because very few characters actually do something and all information/progress is given through dialogue, it becomes very tedious very quickly. To be fair: I dont think this is the writers' fault. I think they did the best with what they were given. A rogue-like like this just doesn't lend itself for a character-driven story.

The vibe of the storytelling also never really gelled with me. The game is clearly giving a modern twist to mythology with its cartoonish gods (whose artstyle is lovely bytheway) and witty quips, but as I'm battling my way through the underworld to the sound of metal as a wisecracking prince of darkness with an infernal machinegun, I never get the feeling that the game is in on the joke, as it instead tries to present the main character as a certified badass and tell a serious story. This gets cringy at times, and they would've been better off going all in on the goofyness.

The gameplay loop is what you expect from a rogue-like, and it's decent. Zagreus controls smoothly. You battle your way through 4 stages of the underworld as you collect divine boons to power you up. The 4th stage is a bit lackluster, but overall, the content is varied, enjoyable and good for a couple of hours. Needing to luck out with your stages and drops is a staple of rogue-likes, so that's fine, but my main gripe with the boons was that while you get a lot of them, a lot of them feel almost useless. An overall build could sometimes steer you in the right direction, but I never felt excited for finding the one upgrade that paired well with my build, lifted my powers to a higher level and changed my playstyle (with maybe the exception of Daedalus hammers). This is also partially caused by the fact that late stage enemies are absolute beefcakes with tons of health and armor. Sure, I was aware that it was my build that enabled me to take them out in 6 hits in the first place, but from a players perspective, you dont feel much of a difference when killing enemies in 6 hits as opposed to 12. That's what it should all be about. I want to FEEL like I made a clever, powerful build, but I rarely ever did.

In addition, part of the content and progress is locked behind 2 currencies for you to grind: Darkness and keys (and later rare resources and aspects, but I didn't get into those). Even though they implemented these as smoothly as they could have, this was just a very unfortunate design decision. For example: Boss Theseus uses the same spear that you can unlock. How much more organic and satisfying would it have been if you were able to unlock your spear weapon by beating Theseus and taking it from him, rather than grinding and paying 8 keys? How much more satisfying would it have been if Zagreus gradually became stronger based on skills you used and decisions you made, rather than grinding and paying darkness? Every time I had to pick a key over a boon, I felt like I was cutting myself in the fingers for that run, but I also needed those keys to unlock content. It really felt like something out of a mobile game rather than an actual Switch title.

In conclusion, Hades is a solid title released in a time of drought for the Switch. If you're into rogue-likes: Pick it up. It will definitely give you enough bang for your buck. However, dont expect it to be the game-of-the-year, genre-defining title that some reviews are suggesting. It simply isn't that.

Despite how long I’ve been ranting here, there’s plenty more I could say about Hades. But honestly, I feel it’s best you discover for yourself why I’m so enamored of Supergiant’s latest adventure. Though the game isn’t quite perfect, it truly earned the accolades it’s been receiving. And honestly, if they decide to implement some additional content later on, most of my complaints would be rendered moot. This is honestly my favorite game yet by Supergiant Games, and easily one of my favorite indies of 2020. If you love rogue and need something new to enjoy, be sure to put this one on your wishlist.
