Aesthetically it is beautiful, but playable it is very mediocre, its impossible to die, and the difficulty is so flat that it is only about moving forward on a series of beautiful wallpapers.

But after playing it finally one evening, I found that this game made me feel absolutely nothing. Clearly others are seeing something here that I'm not seeing at all as I found it very boring. Nothing captured my emotions or held my attention. The game looks beautiful, but nothing is keeping me gripped to it beyond that, and I have no emotional investment in this game or the character at all. Sure some of the "puzzles" you have to figure out, but it's not like they were a challenge to begin with, and I understand the whole "not everyone can handle hard games" etc, but this just fell so flat with me, that I'm actually disappointed I used money on this game. Overall, the aesthetic and music are wonderful, but actual game play is boring, even with the "puzzles" you have to figure out. Expand

I made an account just to rate this game and leave a review. Gris is an actual work of art. More than once, I found myself thinking what a privilege it was just to be able to play the game. It isn't an incredibly complicated, involved game, but it is an incredibly beautiful and emotional one. I wish there were more games like this.

Jaw-droppingly beautiful platformer. Anyone who questions whether games can be art needs to experience this. It's emotionally evocative in a way that few games are -- and no less fun. The gameplay is simple yet engaging, filled with gentle surprises every step of the way. The music is as gorgeous as the animation. Love, love, love!

This game is incredible. The art, the music, the emotion. Its phenomenal. The gameplay is that of a platform puzzle game. The whole journey is amazing. To get through the story is fairly quick, but there are a few collectibles along the way and a sort of in game achievement system to give you a little more to do. If you like art and music this is a must own.

Fantastic game! The visuals are astounding. The music is subtle, but perfect for the game. The platforming is good and the puzzles are relatively easy. What you get this game for is the artwork and the unspoken but meaningful story. The only reason it is not a 10 is because the game is short. But length aside, this is a must have game it you appreciate art style in a game.

By comparison, I had a lot more fun with this 2D work of art than I did with either Journey, Abzu, or even Rime.

That being said, I understand it is not for everyone. But this is not to be confused with a walking-sim. There are puzzles in here and things to discover. And there is a story behind it all with a very lengthy extended metaphor which, by the look of some of the lower critic reviews, they did not seem to get. Like I said, this game isn't for everyone, even if that person is a critic. Which makes one wonder: why do some critics even bother reviewing genres they don't like to play? (Oh yeah... a paycheck).

Anyway, if you love these kinds of games, buy at full price and support the studio (it is a debut game after all). And if you're on the fence about these things... then wait till it's $10 or something.

I often see people refer to this game as a masterpiece, and that it's an exceptional experience. When I "experienced" this game for myself, I was left wondering why it's worth the price tag. While Gris offers some of the best in sound and visual design, it still has a hollow narrative with no defined goal and shallow gameplay that is remarkably unforgettable.

Gris is about a young woman who went through a "painful experience." When the game starts, she is singing on a female statue's hand, but then she loses her voice and the statue crumbles, making her fall down to the ground. As she progresses, she brings back color in the world she lives in. Along the way, she encounters a black ooze that wants to "stop" her.

What was this statue? Why did she lose her voice? Why does she need to bring back color? What sort of world is this? What is this black ooze, and why does it want to stop her? These questions are never answered, not even paid attention to throughout the game. While it's fine with narrative taking a backseat for the player to create interpretations, there's no basis or foundation for any of those interpretations to begin with. There's no backstory, no exposition, or any sort of basic understanding of themes present in the game. While it is up to the player to come up with many kinds of meanings, this ends up with no true meaning to the game, making it almost unimportant. It is the equivalent of looking through an art book with no thematic lens to see it through. It's pretty, but it means nothing.

The "gameplay," if you can call it that, is composed of basic platforming: jump, fly, glide, and swim. There are two powerups in total, such as transforming the woman's dress into a block or regaining one's voice to sing and affect the environment, but there's no real creative way in using any of these mechanics to begin with. The most convoluted it gets for GRIS is gravity-shifting, but that's it. There's nothing too complex about using the block to crush things, use the glide to fly, and swimming to different places.

There's no real obstacle in the player's way other than a few light puzzles, and there's very little interaction when it comes to the game to begin with. In fact, the two "bosses" of the game aren't even bosses, but just more puzzle elements that add little to nothing. I'm fairly certain there's no death mechanics in this game, or no real danger to begin with, making the black ooze come off as nonthreatening.

There's no real defined goal other than bringing the world back into color, but there's no real reason why. There's no defined reason to interact with these statues, who these statues represent, or what it all means. If it was intentional design leaving it up to the player, then the "meaning" of this game is lost.

There's no real point to experience this "experience" if there's nothing of value to pull away from. The visual watercolor design is fantastic, and it is one of the best in graphical design. The colors are used to good effect, and it has beautiful animation, the character and the environment moving fluidly in the game. The soundtrack is phenomenal, but it does make one wonder why people should buy the game when you can get the same experience with the soundtrack instead at a lower price.

In truth, the overall value of GRIS is like enjoying the gift wrap of a gift instead of the gift itself. It offers little to no control toward making whatever decisions you'd like, and instead trudges you along. There's nothing truly unique about its gameplay mechanics, nothing noteworthy about its narrative, if it has one, and it lacks any thematic pull. It offers the least amount of interaction or choice to the player, making one wonder if it can even be considered a "game" in the first place. While it excels in sound and visuals, everything else rings hollow in GRIS. GRIS doesn't want you to play. It wants you to watch.

What makes Gris amazing is the artwork. I'm not the kind of person who plays a game for the graphics–I usually don't care. But Gris' graphics is probably the best I've seen in game: a hand-drawn watercolor fantasy that's so beautiful, it gives you the shivers at multiple times through the game. Every single screenshot from the game would double as an excellent desktop background. Factor in the absolutely amazing, deeply melancholy piano music, and Gris becomes truly memorable: a piece of art that happens to double as a game.

It's only by playing the game and discovering its secrets that you eventually understand what the theme of Gris is, and who's the mysterious woman whose statue opens the game. An emotional, visually gorgeous experience.

It is a side scrolling, gentle, artistic puzzle platformer about a girl who is overcoming tragedy/trauma/loss and trying to find her lost voice in a journey toward catharsis. The platforming is not too difficult and feels very smooth and organic. The challenge is in its clever puzzles.

Gris is metaphoric, melancholy yet uplifting, crushing at times yet warmly encouraging. It has hauntingly beautiful music. The art style is delicately detailed. I had chills frequently when playing this gem of a game.

Gris plays your heartstrings like a violin. It reminds me of Journey or Abzu in its pace, aesthetic, and teasing mystery. This game is an emotional experience and you can feel the care and love with which it was made. The only thing that would have made it better for me is if it were a little longer.

It really feels like playing a piece of art. It's an experience I never had with any other game before, and it really does feel special in it's own way. As a game, it may be short and overall easy, but I found myself not minding it one bit. This game is greatly immersive, stunning and touching, it actually brought me to tears at the end. It's an experience I would recommend to anyone.

You feel like you're playing a moving picture with the soundtrack itself coming to life with your every step. Despite the fact there are no game overs in the game, there are still moments of intensity and fear and emotions you have that never takes away the feeling of danger. The story is also very subtle, to the point I had to google afterwards what it was to understand the journey I just went on. If I had a word for this game, it's simply "beautiful", and with only a $16 price tag (or less if you get it on sale like I did) it's a game worth getting, especially if you want a nice chill game that will help you unwind before bed or put you in a relaxing mood. One of the most beautiful games I've seen graphically and artistically. Its gameplay is entertaining, its music is enveloping and beautiful, and at no time does its splendor stop.

It has a very detailed art style, which you notice the love they put into this game.

Not only is it beautiful, but it is also very fun. What a great game. Made by a talented Spanish studio.

    Totally recommended.

The atmosphere starts out very depressing and the more you proceed in this game, the more joy- and colourful everything becomes.
To me, it is one of my favourite games of all time. It gave me something other games could not.
Besides the positive feelings the game gave me, it is well crafted in every aspect. The controls feel really good, the game mechanics are really fun to play and the graphics and sound/music are just extraordinary.
I highly recommend playing this game with you being relaxed and using headphones. Do not waste this experience and play it in a train or something. Take your time and enjoy it on the couch. It is absolutely worth it!
if you ask yourself how difficult the game is I can say so much: it has some puzzles that need a little bit of brain cells but all in all it is quite easy. You also cant "lose" or die in this game.

I sat down, though it was rather boring and simple for the first few minutes and then it hooked me. Four or so hours later I've finished it (it is short) but I have to say it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. An experience more than a game even.

There are no words in the story, no explanations, nothing, a silent story, you're free to make of it what you will. With that said, I would go so far as to say that this is a high water mark in storytelling. Absolutely captivating. The art develops as the game progresses and becomes increasingly vibrant and ornate. The music blends perfectly with story and general ambiance. Truly, in every way, I absolutely loved this game.

Without ruining anything, and to give people an idea of what to expect, I'd say it is a surrealist journey of sorts, with hints of Alice in Wonderland and/or Pan's Labyrinth. It has a dream like quality which adds to the overall tale. If that sounds like something you'd like, I recommend this fully. I'll be recommending it to any and all my friends who will listen.

Anyway, for me, this crossed a threshold into something I would consider Art, in the fullest sense. The story, the visuals, the music, everything, was absolutely perfect. Wholesome and beautiful. Those would be the words I use to describe it.

It's a vey simple platformer. There's no real challenge to the game. The game instead focuses on atmosphere which you'll either be into or not. I still really enjoyed my couple hours with the game, its a tight very pretty simple platformer with a beautiful score but I wish there was a little more depth in the gameplay.

The game starts with the protagonist losing her voice, and the world turning gray (Gris). Color is restored by exploring the world and solving easy platforming puzzles. It's not anything like Hollow Knight or Celeste.

The story is kinda simple, almost bland, but make sense. The fact that you unlock colors is great and should have been exploited more. Same for the NPCs you encounter from time to time.

Gris is a very chill platforming puzzle game that uses visual and environmental storytelling to bring the player on a journey of loss, friendship, adversity, discovery, and reconciliation. It’s a short, poignant game that everyone should experience at least once.

Gris is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen for “video games can be art.” It is a well-crafted experience that uses all of its faculties—visuals, sound, and storytelling—to evoke an emotional response from the player. Gris is a very short game—I think it took me three or four hours total—and that’s not a bad thing; the game is the perfect length to draw you into its experience, and it ends before it could possibly get boring. Gris can be enjoyed in a short burst for what it is, or it can be perused, analyzed, and inspected for its artistic value and its deeper commentary on aspects of humanity. Because of its brevity, Gris can only be thoroughly un-packed and processed post-game. The more I consider what I played and the impact it had on me, and the more I really think about the very smart, tight design of the game, the higher I rate it.

I truly believe that Gris was a one-of-a-kind experience for me, because I enjoyed analyzing it as much as I did playing it. 10/10, would highly recommend.

It’s just a 2D platformer devoid of any challenge, and instead of evoking true feeling it makes a good first impression (“wow, it’s beautiful!”) and then just glides for a couple of hours using that momentum. It doesn’t actually have anything important to say, it’s just pretty. [02/2019, p.56]

While the story is loose and can leave players feeling a little lost, there are emotional cues that symbolize this as a journey of loss and healing. The excellent soundtrack, level design and commitment to themes make Gris a memorable title for all. With fun, adventurous platforming and puzzles that are both challenging and intuitive, its playstyle keeps things simple by placing player cognition at the forefront. Gris is a true work of indie art that prides itself on attention to details. Fans of works of art and video games will find a relatable home in Gris. Although this is Nomada Studio's first title, it has hit every possible note out of the park.
