GRID Autosport is almost in a class of its own on the Nintendo Switch. The game is one of the best looking Switch games and is the best racing simulator experience available on the console. While games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Crash Team Racing lead the system’s kart racing options–GRID Autosport has shot to the top of the list if you want to race in real-world environments. The level of care that Feral has put into the Switch version is apparent with even more options to come. If you’re in the market for a racing sim to take on-the-go, you can’t do any better than GRID Autosport.

GRID Autosport is an easy game to suggest to anyone who is a car fan, as there is just so much content to experience. The number of racing types is large and while there is not a lot of variety in them, as you can move from one discipline to another, it means you are not stuck in one for 12 hours. The game manages to run quite well, with visuals that are some of the best on the Switch, especially with the high-res pack installed and while there is no multiplayer, yet, there is still plenty of events you can enjoy on your own.

GRID Autosport is by far the most engaging racer on the Nintendo Switch since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. More importantly though, it is one of the most enjoyable racing experiences offered in recent years.

With over 100 cars and more than 25 different racing venues set over five distinct disciplines (as well as bonus DLC ones like destruction derby and drag racing), GRID Autosport is that rarest of beasts: a jack of all trades that doesn't sacrifice quality as a result. The addition of all previously released paid console DLC – right down to the cynical XP boost – is extremely welcome, but the complete removal of all local and online multiplayer features means this a strictly solo affair, and that might be a turn-off for many. Still, that doesn't change the fact that this is one of the best racing games on Switch.

An essential game for lovers of racing titles that comes to fill a serious lack of games of this genre on Nintendo Switch and to stay on the podium for a long time.

The Nintendo Switch may not be riddled with racing simulators, but GRID Autosport has set the benchmark. It caters so well for someone like me who’s a casual racer at best, and it doesn’t take a genius to see how its interface and design has been engineered for petrolhead veterans craving a challenge. It may lack multiplayer out of the gate and be half a decade old at this point, but it’s still a solid racer nonetheless that’s a worthy addition to the hybrid convenience of the Nintendo Switch.

GRID Autosport shows one thing first and foremost: That Switch is unsuitable as a racing platform if a game wants to show off more than arcade mechanics – even though the combination of mobile gaming and GameCube-controller promises quite some fun.

I’m not even a big racing guy, but WOW!! If I am gonna play I want it to either be very realistic or very... Mario Kart.

Being we have had Mario Kart, this fills the much needed simulator itch and boy does it ever. I honestly couldn’t imagine a more comprehensive racing sim working on this console and certainly not as well as this one works.

Anyone worried about the analog controls I recommend using a custom config that uses the right analog as brake and accelerate. Then update the right bumper to be handbrake and left bumper be flashback. Also I’ve configured my left and right triggers to handle looking left and right since I play from the interior/cockpit view.

Enjoy! This is without question as good as it gets with regards to racing. To have a feature complete build on this hardware is frankly mind blowing.

I own a Switch Lite and this game is a lot of fun!
Easily the best racing sim for the Switch.

It looks fantastic, but what really makes it shine is the amount you can customise your experience. The menus are really clear and easy to use.

Firstly, you can choose either best graphics (optimisation - graphics) or best performance (optimisation - performance). With best graphics it runs at a fixed 30fps with no noticeable frame drops, and with optimisation performance it runs at 50-60fps vsync and still looks great. On the Switch Lite the optimisation performance is definitely the best option because the 50-60fps is really worth it and it still looks amazing.

Secondly, you can customise the difficulty, and some of the most important options IMHO are about the driving experience, relating to how real you want it to feel. I love a challenge and I want to feel like I’m really driving a sports car, and this game manages to achieve that on Switch Lite! It’s impressive!
    My settings are:
Handling assist - Simulator Pro (which is no handling assistance)
    Stability control - Off
ABS - On (for obvious reasons lol)
    Traction control - Off
There are many more settings, but these are the important ones that directly affect overall handling of the cars. Each car also handles uniquely and can be individually tuned as well.

You probably want to start off with easier settings than these, until you are used to steering with the Switch’s stick. But once I got used to that, then these settings are a lot of fun, and the driving experience feels ridiculously real given you’re steering with a stick and accelerating and breaking with shoulder buttons. I feel the challenge of keeping the car on the track while flying round a corner about matches what it would be in real life with these settings.

Performance-wise, the Switch is indeed not the most powerful console out there, but ability to play such a game on this console is a delight!
