The premise of Graveyard Keeper is of the most unique of just about any sim game out there, and this no-frills Switch port makes it portable for the first time. There really isn’t much that needs to be added impressively robust graveyard management game, but it would have been nice if the game took advantage of the Joy-Con rumble feature.

Graveyard Keeper is a strange beast, offering a truly unique spin on the management sim. It’s systems are robust and plentiful, but frankly many are downright confusing. The developers decided to do the player no favors, leaving much of the complexities a mystery without searching online. That is enough to scare some away, but if it isn’t a dealbreaker, there’s more than enough here to keep you busy for hours on end.

Graveyard Keeper’s limitations and shortcomings come real close to outweighing the fun that can be had from playing a new game. When I got the game and read the premise, it sounded quirky and fun. As I played, it seemed more awkward and vexing.

Visually, the pixel art is wonderful and full of character and the music fits the downbeat tone at work, but the gameplay is too slow to be gripping while the story isn’t pacey or unique enough to inspire wonder at what’s to come, especially because the conceit of the game’s plot seems pretty obvious from the outset. We did hear a car crash before waking up outside reality, after all…

Graveyard Keeper is well-crafted effort and an original one at that - a cemetery management simulation game is nothing short of unique and Graveyard Keeper does the job with a very attractive visual environment, as well as complex and involving tasks. It doesn't try to appeal to less experienced players, though, as the information available during the game is sometimes lacking, the game experience is long, repetitive and slow-paced and there are some controller flaws to improve.

Graveyard Keeper is an ambitious life simulator that boasts gorgeous art and some interesting mechanics but unfortunately fails to meet the standards of the genre due to some overly complicated tasks and poor balancing.

There’s no doubt that Graveyard Keeper is a fun game every now and again; there are bright nuggets of gold sporadically hidden within it. It’s the video game equivalent of Now, That’s What I Call Music: you get it for a few good hits and deal with the fluff in-between. However, if you’re looking for a strong competitor to Stardew Valley or Rune Factory, this doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The attempt mostly succeeds, but is let down by making the game an obtuse grind through a tech tree with lots of dead ends and useless options.

Quite often, the writing saves it; the dialogue is clever and well put together. It gives it a satirical edge that does a lot to make the slower and more boring parts a bit more tolerable. There are also some good ideas and interesting mechanics on display.

At the core, however, its a good idea massively let down by execution. It can be fun in spite of the flaws, but I can understand why that doesn't save it for many people. Also, the ending is one of the most anticlimactic endings I have ever seen. It's not quite "Conglatulations!!" NES era bad,but it gets close.

It mixes crafting, farming and RPG with very intelligent humor. There are many easter eggs like the names of the DLC or the vampire hunter (aka Geralt de Rivia). The history is long and you have to be ready for repetitive tasks - like the other games of the same gender. Full Review »

They are shocking. Loading times on tapes and floppy discs were quicker. Skyrim loads quicker...thats shameful.

    2) 30 fps at best...what engine are you running this 2d game on? Unreal slow 5 ? Would fair better on a commodore amiga, its the same graphics and thats 30 years ago!

Deep shame as the game Is rather good.
