    Gothic Classic Switch is a cleaned and revised edition of Piranha Bytes' classic masterpiece. The innovations around camera and inventory management are just a plus in front of a title that, despite being twenty years old, still works like it used to.

    An adequate port of a classic that will mostly delight fans. Gothic still shines brilliantly after twenty years, thanks to its story, atmosphere, and open world. It's a pity that the abysmal combat system didn't receive an overhaul, and it still falls short on the technical side.

    When we remember that Gothic was one of the earliest truly open-world 3D concept games, we can at least give a nod of appreciation for the pioneering effort. With the time that has passed, Gothic Classic is mostly a reminder of how far we have come with game design and system capabilities.

    Gothic Classic has an avid fanbase, and for good reason. The game is intricately detailed, with deep lore, and meaningful world-building. But sadly the awful controls are too much to cope with, and they do ruin the game to some extent. Perhaps it works better on a keyboard and mouse – but this is a game on the Nintendo Switch, and on this format it doesn’t quite work.

    The Switch edition of Gothic offers comfortable controls, improved inventory system, a quick save feature, and everything the game’s admirers love about it. If you’re a die-hard Gothic fan and you’re enthusiastic about crossing the Barrier again on Switch, go for it. Everyone else should bear in mind that it’s a pretty basic port of a 22-year-old game and carefully consider spending their money on it.

    Gothic is getting a full remake, which will release in 2024. I actually expect that to be good, because the developers can use the modern tools they have to modernise and restore the original vision of the game. Unfortunately, though, that’s the final nail in the coffin for the original. Unless you have a very academic reason for wanting to play an artefact of B-tier game design from the early turn of the century, there’s just no reason to play this port.
