Sep 5, 2024Gimmick! 2 defies the odds by being a very good follow-up to a decades-old game made by another team entirely. It builds on the original game in some smart ways, but it never feels like it’s paying too much homage to be its own thing. If you enjoyed the first game, you’ll be thrilled with this. Platformer fans who aren’t put off by a high level of challenge will also want to check it out. That said, if you’re looking for something easy-going, don’t be fooled by the look of Gimmick! 2. It’s just as tough of a nut to crack as its predecessor, even with an easier difficulty setting.

Jan 23, 2025There’s not too much in the designs that you won’t have seen in just about every single platform game out there, so you get your requisite forest levels, ice levels, factory levels and so on – but it all hangs together well.

Oct 11, 2024Thoroughly pleasant, if a touch one-note, Gimmick 2 is an old-school platformer that's been sensitively modernised. Challenging, with lovely, smooth controls.

Sep 23, 2024Who knew a modern sequel to an obscure NES classic could be this much fun? Well, Gimmick! 2 definitely is and I highly recommend it.

Sep 23, 2024Gimmick! 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, which is probably the best when a new development team builds on something they didn’t create. That said, this is a beautiful game that plays great and makes some smart updates to keep the difficulty, which so many loved about the original, while making things work for modern players as well. You won’t see anything truly new in Gimmick! 2, but if you’re just looking for an incredibly well-executed modern platformer, you won’t find much better.

Sep 14, 2024Gimmick! 2 is an easy recommendation for fans of retro platformers and a no-brainer for lovers of the original. Its cutesy, feel-good vibes belie a trove of super-tough but cleverly crafted challenges that are surmountable with practice, precision, and patience. What’s clear is the absolute reverence that developer Bitwave Games has for the source material. Dispel any notion of this being a retro cash grab; this is the sequel that the underappreciated and ahead-of-its-time NES classic has always deserved.

Oct 11, 2024As someone who grew up with NES platformers, Gimmick 2! feels like having a favorite dish at a new restaurant where they’ve tweaked the recipe by adding one or two new ingredients. I know I’ve had better, but it’s still tasty. While this challenging game doesn’t earn the broad recommendation I hoped for, it’s worth a long look for skilled platformer enthusiasts.
