Despite its difficulty, Evertried is almost faultless in what it attempts to achieve. The gameplay is tight, the music and visuals are both fresh and nostalgic, and the roguelike tower aspect and difficulty will have you coming back for “just one more run” until you ascend to the top. And even when you do, this game will have you coming back for more as you attempt to better previous scores and times.

If we were to name any complaint, it’s that the core gameplay in Evertried can feel a little stale after extended sessions. Skills and traps mix up the way you play somewhat, but you’re ultimately still confined to pressing one of four directions for the whole game, which gets a little samey given enough time. Still, we’d give this one a recommendation; there’s lots of replayability, the concept of its gameplay is something we haven’t seen before, and (most importantly) it’s fun.

Evertried is a welcome take on the rogue like genre. Although it can feel repetitive, the turn-based gameplay is a refreshing take.

Evertried does a lot right — fans of roguelites who have played them all and want to explore something novel might enjoy this unique spin on turn-based tactical gameplay. It definitely instills that “one more turn” kind of feeling from the get-go, eagerly inviting players to die, die again. If Into The Breach was your cup of tea and you’re looking for something with that kind of flavor, Evertried is here to take you to new heights.

If you love Into the Breach, you’ll want to give this a look. It has a similar vibe, and even if it doesn’t hold up in the long term quite as well, you’ll still get plenty of fun out of it.

Strategy hasn’t tended to be a very common flavor for roguelikes on the Switch (well, at least ones that aren’t deck-builders) so when theyStrategy hasn’t tended to be a very common flavor for roguelikes on the Switch (well, at least ones that aren’t deck-builders) so when they appear it’s always a bit refreshing. Elevator pitch wise probably the easiest way to set expectations for how Evertried plays is to think in the vein of Crypt of the Necrodancer, just removing the rhythmic element and throwing in some unique skills that you’ll choose from to spend your in-game currency on within the run to best suit your style. It’s nice that because of the element where enemies only make their move when you do you can throttle the speed of things to be quicker if you’re in the zone or slower if you want to be more contemplative. There’s no doubt it can be challenging, especially as learning how best to deal with individual enemies can be a trial and error affair at times but as you work out core strategies to deal with each you continue to feel more effective the more times you jump back in. I would say that some of the controls weren’t necessarily as intuitive or as well explained as I would have preferred but ultimately that’s a temporary problem so not a killer by any means.
