    Overall, Epistory – Typing Chronicles is a beautiful and touching experience that also doubles up as a way to improve your typing skills. Though it can be played with Joy-Con, keyboard is absolutely the way to go.

    The very core of Epistory – Typing Chronicles is centered around words and story. The narrative and visuals carry over well to the Switch, but the typing combat gimmick requires the cumbersome use of an external keyboard or the built-in adaptation to Joy-Con controls. It’s a fun, clever game, but one that’s best experienced on the computer.

    It’s really unfortunate, because I feel like Epistory has a lot of potential to be great. Its papercraft world is gorgeous, and the voiceover narration has a lot of charm. But no matter how good those things may be — and how good this game probably is when you play it on PC — the fact of the matter is that Epistory is a lousy fit for the Switch.

    This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. kinda fun. typing to kill monsters is different. the story is kinda intersting. the art style is unique. the viewpoint looks like diablo where youre looking down. one level i was stuck on for an hour but i actually felt great because i changed my tactics and felt smart. i had to use electric spells for chain damage and use the long words on the big monsters first so they can chain the words. my typing has improved a little bit for sure. haven't felt like that in a game in a long time. the ending is kinda sad. the girl is in a coma and was dreaming. the game was a dream all along. and it was cool to reveal that all the watercolor paintings you find in the world is her art! a little bit sad actually. at the end, i felt that my typing has improved, so it's a win win! it's not a bad game to improve your typing skills actually haha. i like the little puzzles you find. like turn the switch to open the gate to get throught the maze. there's a few things that made me confused though. the pathfinding is not that good. i found myself lost in where to go next. another instance, there's a level where you have to light up lights in the dark cave or else you can't type. i lighted up the crystals and the mosters killed me because the letteres won't show up. even though i already lighted it up. it's a bug that needs to be fixed becuase i unfairly did a few times to this.… Full Review »

    Forgive me, but I’m an absolute sucker for games that do things differently… in fact, I tend to seek them out. One of the least representedForgive me, but I’m an absolute sucker for games that do things differently… in fact, I tend to seek them out. One of the least represented styles of games out there is the typing game genre. With the only truly memorable title I can recall in the space being Typing of the Dead (which needs to be on Switch, BTW), it’s simply a rarity out there. So when something like Epistory comes along with that style of play as the hook and then pairs it with a unique art style and a very pleasant fantasy story it’s almost a guarantee that I’ll be smitten.So, yeah, making sure you have the proper setup to play this could be a challenge. You’ll need to hook up a keyboard via the USB port in your dock and then, depending on the length of your cord and how your Switch is situated, there may be some challenges. If you can overcome that though, what awaits is just a taste of something different, and if you’re not pretty nimble typing you may find it’s a bit too tough for you when things get more intense. What strikes me as a bit odd is a criticism that the more you play the more many enemies and words will begin to repeat themselves… as if this isn’t a reality in all games of all types, and for some of the trickier things in the game’s vocabulary you’ll be wishing the well wasn’t quite so deep since things like more scientific terms you’re less likely to know on sight so they can be a challenge. For me the game is chock full of enchantment and is simply a breath of fresh air, so if you’re able to manage a way to get it set up in a way that playing it is viable I’m happy to recommend it.
