This game isn't a revolution in its gameplay style but it masters the metroidvania style perfectly, and mastering such a genre isn't an easy task. This is exactly the kind of game I adore, the story is deeper than it seems at first and gets quite emotional, the secrets are well hidden, the difficulty is well balanced and the quality of life is amazing.
This game reminds me a lot of Salt And Sanctuary which is, to me, one of the references of the genre.

It was such a frustrating, cheesy experience from start to finish. The difficulty borders on abusive at times, not because it's impossible- it's obviously not, I did everything eventually -but because it's just so stupidly implemented.

I mean, there's a boss that literally does nothing but run away from you and summon endless minions. Beating that boss didn't make me feel like I was clever or skilled, it made me feel like I had cheesed my way past a game-breaking design error. I felt stupider for having overcome it.

That was the worst offender, but after the first couple of major fights, they're all like that to varying degrees. The final boss is the most deeply lackluster of them all- it literally does nothing at all unless you move near its claws, except cough up an endless stream of very tanky flying minions that can two-shot you. The fight is literally just a matter of trying to kill the minions faster than they can spawn while dealing incidental damage to the boss when possible. I felt no relief or triumph upon beating it- just this kind of disbelief that that's really how the game ends.

This game wants to be Dark Souls- aesthetically and philosophically -and totally gets it wrong. If it respected my time and got out of its own way, I think I would really have enjoyed it. The exploration elements are so good! The music is great! The art is lovely (even if it is way too Dark Souls adjacent)! But the miserable, miserable slog that the game forces you to deal with to experience all this outweighs all the good. I can't recommend this game.

Solid game with a neat concept, but a bunch of nitpicks that bring it down. It's not a Metroidvania. The world progression is incredibly linear compared to other titles in the genre, secrets are few and far between, and there is no "I'll come back to this boss when I'm stronger" ability. It's more of a metroidvania-lite a la Cave Story. The art is pretty, but it doesn't work well for an action platformer. Everything tends to blend into a jumbled blurry mess when the fights get chaotic. Background and decorative tiles are also hard to tell apart from functional platforms and environment objects at times. Hitboxes vary from passable to downright atrocious. There are several enemies whose attacks will register a hit on you despite your character being well away from the attack animation. A specific example that comes to mind is a dragon enemy that appears in late game. One of its attacks is a aerial backflip which strikes the character with its tail supposedly. However if your character is in the path of the backflip but the tail has not yet passed where your character is, your character will still get hit. The damage is also quite substantial. Many of your own attacks will also hit enemies despite the animations not hitting the enemies. This is not something I consider acceptable in an action platformer. All and all I'm not sure if I'm going to finish the game. It definitely has its moments, and the bosses are a lot of fun to fight, the issues with the game are definitely souring the experience for me. Expand

My only gripe after 6-7 hours is that the game's description oversells the non-linearity a bit, at least for the starting four or so bosses. You might feel like you're hitting more dead ends but it is large enough of a world that it still doesn't feel too railroady.

Ender Lilies isn't interested in reinventing the wheel, rather, it reminds the player as to why the wheel is one of the best things we ever thought of. After getting 100% completion i can happily say that this game is fantastic, that is quite simply the bottom line.

You get little bits of the past but they are scattered around and mixed up and I was confused at times about what was going on or had happened. The combat is a lot of fun. I did not find this to be an easy game. Sometimes I would die due to not paying attention to health, or because I took a big hit that drained more than I thought it would, or because I fell into a lake of poison. I died repeatedly at times trying to get past a certain room and probably died over 10 times for each boss in the game before beating them. I did not find the main bosses to be a walk in the park. I felt like this game was a challenge and beating it felt great. The plethora of spirits you get is nice but I found myself only using 2 for combat and 2 for getting around to hard to reach places. The rest didn't get touched. I don't think the game a linear as I found myself exploring areas that were not inline with where I should have been in the game and some areas required critical thought to get through or a specific ability which I didn't have at the time. Overall an amazing game and I hope to see another one from these developers. Expand

For whatever reason the more hand-drawn black and white style that Ender Lilies uses is one that I’ve been burned on before so I approached it with some hesitation. I’m happy to say that it pretty quickly shattered my concerns with well-worn platforming and slashing, some smart level design, and a story that caught my attention a bit more than usual. Throw in progression with new weapon choices, skills, and growth and it’s much more than a pretty face. Even the games enemy bosses, which often can end up feeling generic or unfair or flawed in some way and bring games like this down feel well-designed and tough but beatable, giving the game a great middle-of-the-road difficulty rather than trending in the direction many have chosen of late of shooting for a “Souls-like” experience by setting up a damage sponge with lackluster design and calling it a day. Mixing together a unique and generally gorgeous art style, classic Metroidvania play, and a story that manages to at least be a bit of a surprise, Ender Lilies arrived on the Switch without much fanfare to announce it, but leaves you with a memorable experience.

I am sure others deride the combat and abilities/items/upgrades/ etc..., but hey, we all have different wants from our entertainment. In my case, I just want to relax and enjoy some gaming from time to time after work - I came back to console games a few years ago (Switch and PS4) after a decade away, and so far, this is the only game out of about 40+ played that I have achieved 100% on. WHITE NIGHTS

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knight is a video game produced by Binary Haze Interactive and published on January 21, 2021. The game was completed 100% on Xbox Series X.

    SOME RAIN MUST FALL:
Ender Lilies begins with a small visual introduction to the game world, introducing the player to the great evil afflicting the planet. Endless corrupted rain has turned all living creatures into impure and immortal beings. The only salvation from this fate lies in the young white maidens, girls who can deprive the creatures of their corruption. The player wakes up inside a broken capsule, assuming the role of one of these maidens, Lily, the last descendant of the white priestess. From there on, the goal is to purify the still sentient creatures in order to restore what this realm once was, bringing back serenity and stopping the endless rain.

    WHITE ECLIPSES BLACK:
This title faithfully brings all the mechanics that characterize a pure Metroidvania: different abilities unlockable throughout the game that open up previously inaccessible paths, a currency to upgrade abilities, various secret and non-secret bosses to face, and multiple paths that can be taken simultaneously. Additionally, Ender Lilies takes a lot of inspiration from Hollow Knight, with explicit references like benches and relics, similar to the aforementioned game's charms. The game's unique selling point and distinguishing feature from the rest is the type of attack available to the player. Lily will use the souls of purified fighters to defeat enemies, and it's possible to use up to three simultaneously, and six thanks to the convenient set swapping.

    PALE COLORS:
The game's graphics are well-crafted, with different parallax layers that change for each game area. The use of muted colors to enhance the mood and devastation of this land is fully exploited. Furthermore, the visual effects add an extra boost to the gameplay. One drawback of the game is the limited variety of enemies and the similarly lacking diversity of the bosses, which are not very powerful or distinct.

    WINTER:
The audio component is what stands out prominently above everything else. Most of the game's soundtracks are original and elegant. The latter adjective is the one that resonates throughout the game, contrasting with the chaos generated by the rain. The sound effects complement the visuals and enhance the game's combat, making it very fluid and entertaining.

    BUT WHY 8?

    PROS:
The game, despite being a classic Metroidvania, adds a touch of novelty to the combat, supported by excellent audiovisual effects that keep the experience flowing towards the end without becoming boring or repetitive. Moreover, the challenge offered by the central bosses is balanced and entertaining, unlike the mini-bosses, which can be easily defeated with powerful abilities. The originality of the story context is well-structured and leaves room for curiosity. The exploration is also very interesting, and each map has multiple secrets, some of which are difficult to find. Additionally, it is highly appreciated that you can replay boss fights and engage in a boss rush, as well as the ability to modify all game parameters such as enemy and protagonist health and attack to create a greater personal challenge.

    CONS:
The cons of this game are varied but highly subjective. Starting with the overly obvious inspiration from Hollow Knight and other Metroidvania games, such as Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, from which it borrows the combat style.

Combat: there is no sound or impact to hitting enemies. They don’t bounce back or register you hitting them. They just keep doing what they are doing. It feels like your attacks are just swinging in mid air. This makes combat extremely boring and aggravating. There is no input to your physical actions so they end up not feeling like physical actions. It’s like listening to music on mute. Map and exploration: this was my biggest issue. The map is so bad (and yes I could figure it out) that it makes the entire world NOT feel like a world, but rather a slide show if individuals zones. I never felt like I was traveling. While looking gorgeous and dripping with atmosphere, Ender Lilies may not be the greatest metroidvania when it comes to level design and combat. Thankfully, it is easy to overlook if you are not of the nitpicking kind. But still, make sure to use the game’s momentum while it lasts, since a number of its bumps may spoil the ride for some players out there.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a solid game all around, with a fun and always evolving combat system, a well-crafted world with tons of secrets to find, and a sober soundtrack accompanying its traversal acting as the title’s highlights. A word of caution should be given regarding the difficulty, since both regular enemies and bosses can prove to be quite hard to beat, especially during the final act. The story doesn’t shine for its originality but still manages to be well worth uncovering thanks to its characters and setting, making this bleak but ultimately endearing Metroidvania a strong recommendation for anyone that is up for the challenge.

ENDER LILLIES: Quietus of the Knights is the definition of sky-high potential gone to waste. At first it will seem like this is a flawless diamond. It is beautiful, it controls like a charm, and the story behind it all is mysterious and dark. The more you play, however, the more you realise that, under the wallpaper-worthy vistas lies something that leans more towards generic than awesome, with combat in particular slowly turning into a repetitive slog. Sadly, this is nothing more an 'okay' metroidvania.
