    An auto runner 2D platform adventure plenty of roguelike elements… that haven’t been implemented in the best way possible.

    A good entry into what feels like a genre of old, successfully maintaining the fun, and feeling fresh when it wasn’t that long ago this would’ve felt played out. The visuals are the real feature, especially when the package is as light as it is, altogether making it a great game for mobile, and a decent one for the Switch.

    I think that perhaps it’s the trappings of the autorunner genre which holds Earthnight back from greatness. This is a game with wildly original ideas that kept me enthralled throughout, but I did keep wishing that it would slow down and give the player some time to breathe. Endless runners are fun and all, but they’re not the kind of game which encourages careful appreciation. For that reason, occasionally the artwork and gameplay clashed against each other (the detailed art doesn’t make for immediately readable game mechanics, the game mechanics detract from the detail of the art) and I felt that Earthnight was lesser than the sum of its parts.

    EarthNight is a resolutely non-conformist auto-runner. Its artistry is second-to-none, with creativity and soul that are worth the price of admission alone. Sometimes its eagerness to cram as much as possible into a typically simple genre can frustrate and overwhelm, but its boldness should be celebrated.

    EarthNight is a runner that features some very interesting and progressive gameplay mechanics but suffers from a lack of variety and tends to be a little confusing when things get too speedy.

    After a dragon apocalypse, there are just two people able to recover the world we were used to live in. EarthNight is so unique and beautiful both in the visual side and with their chiptune soundtrack; it also makes you feel good thanks to a clever roguelike design, but the game feels so short and limited as the game does not give the player enough time to breathe and thing: is too (too) fast when battling with the dragons. Despite its flaws, the endless runner subgenre finds here a good new contender to pay attention to.

    EarthNight does not stray clear from its origins, this is a simple and unpretentious endless runner that originated in mobile platforms and it does a decent job at that. While the gameplay experience is rather limited and does not elevate EarthNight to any celestial levels, those who enjoy endless runners will find a good time with this work.

    EarthNight is really a product of its genre. It's rare that auto-runners feel truly unique, and while this does a decent job of introducing new mechanics regularly, it does such a poor job with enemy placement that you will have to run through the same kind of courses over and over before you get to see them - unless you skip on through the fray, and that only works so long. Even when you find these new ideas, they are often just one tweak shy of something a lot better than they ended up being, and it's a shame such an original idea feels so flat.

    This game is gorgeous. The artwork, the music... incredible! This game was totally worth the wait.

I enjoyed it, but the controls feel a bit awkward and not quite as responsive as they should. It's also frustrating that the game isn't very colorblind friendly. It'll set dragons as objectives, with no other indication aside from color as far as I can tell. When you can't distinguish color well... It's frustrating to say the least. Full Review »
