Dredge not only manages to be a compelling fishing game that constantly urged me to scour every part of the option, but also is a great horror game with fantastic ambiance. It is perfectly unsettling, with things going awry when you least expect them. It makes you want to tempt fate by sounding a siren or using lights while on the water alone at night, even though you know whatever’s sounding a horn back at you doesn’t mean you well.

As a long time Lovecraft fan and someone who appreciates a good cosmic horror, Dredge is top class.

Dredge is a dark, engaging Switch experience that, unlike some of the three-eyed creatures you may pull up from the depths, feels perfectly sized. It balances serenity with risk, exploration with accumulation. A dreadfully good experience that cements Black Salt Games as a developer to watch in future.

Dredge has no right to be as good as it is, but it effectively plays to its strengths and mixes solid systems with a strong theme. If you're not into fishing or Lovecraft, Dredge won't be your cup of tea. However, if either even slightly tickles your fancy, I can almost guarantee that you'll have a blast delving into the twisted mysteries of Dredge — and you'll even make a decent buck with mutant fish while you're at it.

Dredge takes the simple fishing simulator formula and layers on just enough new mechanics to make the gameplay loop a spectacular experience from start to finish. The constant fear and impending sense of dread make sure you’re always uncomfortable, making Dredge a master class in the subtlety of horror. Even though the story never comes out and explains everything that’s happening, it does enough to make sure you can put it together, while relying on the journey you’ve made for yourself to stand tall. All in all, Dredge is one of those near-perfect indie games—it accomplishes everything it sets out to do, keeps the player entertained throughout, and manages to be innovative in an industry filled with games for us to play.

Dredge reeled me in to the point I sunk hours into it, and even if my patience floundered at times, the net experience was fun to tackle. While its content isn't stuffed to the gills, it’s hard to be crabby with a gameplay loop that had me hooked, and the intriguing horror angle perched on top of a swimmingly good adventure is worth wading into. It doesn’t have to fish for compliments, but since I’m trawling for puns and you’re probably salty about it, I’ll wave goodbye and say that Dredge isn’t crappie. Sea you later!

This is a very interesting adventure where fishing and horror goes hand in hand to deliver a dark story that we really enjoyed uncovering.

With its encyclopaedia of over 125 fish, Dredge’s bounty is a boundless as the sea, its action RPG upgrade compulsion loop as deep. That said, you get out what you put in – during the first couple of hours, anyway. Once you achieve the sweet spot of an upgraded boat, manageable difficulty and a story in full flow, it’s magical. The excellent presentation of a terrifying ocean really hits home. The need to stretch the limits of safety to reach your next catch leads to edge-of-the-seat moments, while the slapping rain and eerie creaks of the sound design hardly help you to peace out. Interspersed with confidence-building angling in the sunshine and the fun of slotting oddly shaped creatures into your tight inventory, there’s just enough encouragement to keep enjoying the horrors. A wonderful first effort from Black Salt, Dredge is absolutely the kind of game you mount over the mantelpiece rather than throw back into the water.

Dredge is a game that proposes a peculiar but well implemented mix that keeps you hooked thanks to its puzzles and dark aesthetics. It knows how to keep you hooked, but in the end it can get a bit repetitive.

I'm 5 hours in and so far it's great! Nice mechanics and nice progression! And if you are on the sea at, night it's very scary.

Dredge has a really unique feel to it. The combination of inventory management (which plays sort of like a game of Tetris), explorationDredge has a really unique feel to it. The combination of inventory management (which plays sort of like a game of Tetris), exploration (through a very visually pleasing environment), and the spooky story which gives you some direction, makes this one of my favorite indie games ever. It’s a very immersive game: each morning you set out with cautious enthusiasm for what may lie ahead, only for the day to end with your little boat being far from port, the anxiety of the night quickly sets in as you race back to safety, or risk your day’s bounty to one of the many happenings of the briny depths. I also really enjoy the upgrade system for the boat and your equipment. You start out in a very small, slow boat that limits what you can catch and how far you can make it out of the bay in a day. As you upgrade your boat and equipment, the map opens up and so do your options of what you can fish. If you like, strategy, great visuals, the ocean, creepy stories, or games with addictive loops; don’t walk, run to pick this up! Full Review »
