With “DOOM Eternal” on the horizon, what better time to look at the classic “DOOM” games than now? Most of you guys probably know a thing or two about “DOOM,” whether it’s from playing the original 1993 classic or the excellent 2016 remake that I’d argue is in the masterclass of modern-day first-person shooters. Most of you guys probably know a thing or two about “DOOM,” whether it’s from playing the original 1993 classic or the excellent 2016 remake that I’d argue is in the masterclass of modern-day first-person shooters. This game, the original 1993 title, was revolutionary in the realm of FPS titles, right alongside “Wolfenstein 3D,” and pioneered a number of things we see not only in FPS games today, but in video games in general (it also happened to be one of gaming’s first big controversies, might I add), leading to so many “DOOM clones” soon after its release. Now, it might be easy to look at a game like this and immediately think “hmm…that probably hasn’t aged well.” And, sure, I’ll admit there are elements to it that hasn’t, but beyond simply being able to appreciate what “DOOM” did for gaming, I have to say that I still think it’s very good.
“DOOM” is a game that is built on pure adrenaline: it’s fast-paced and exciting, never hesitating to spill even an ounce of blood along the way. The gunplay is simple at first, but the game still packs a good challenge as you get further into it. The pixelated graphics still look great today, the controls are still extremely smooth, and even playing it in 2020 on the Nintendo Switch, in a generation where first-person shooters have been all the rage and have been pushed even further than this, “DOOM” is still just plain addicting. John Romero, in all his glory, went balls-to-the-wall with this one, yet his unrelenting approach makes the game all the more compelling even after almost 30 years.
Now, I will admit, there are a few elements of the game that haven’t really aged fantastically: for starters, a number of the maps often feel like they’re a bit too big, and that can lead to some rather repetitive moments, especially when the level design starts to blur together just a bit. Also, I think some of the puzzles in the game do feel a bit obtuse and frustrating to deal with, and it takes away from the game just a little bit.
Even so, “DOOM” is a classic for a reason: beyond how revolutionary it was, it’s a game that comes pretty damn close to being “timeless” and it still looks and feels just as good even as it pushes towards its 30th birthday. Now, I can see why some people might want to stray away from this: with what we have today from “DOOM,” there is an argument that this is only worth revisiting for the historical context (which, as someone who enjoys game history and game preservation, is a good enough reason for me), and given that it doesn’t seem like this new Switch version has too many differences, it might not be enticing enough to double-dip on, but no matter what system you have it on, make it a point to play “DOOM.” Even if the only reason to play it is because of how “history-defining” it is, the game’s aged so well that your trip through the history museum will still be a rip-roaring good time.

This port of both DOOM and DOOM II got me hyped when multiple sources announced their surprise release on Switch.

A few hours later, it left me extremely disappointed because of three things :

    - First, the stupid DRM forces you to have an internet connection to play, meaning that you can't experience classic DOOM on the go, which kills the purpose of the Switch. DOOM GBA would be a better investment.
    - Second, this is a slowed down version of the game. The music is slow, the monsters are slow, Doomguy is slow even with "Always Run" enabled... This makes the experience unnecessarily painful. It feels like the game has been put in 50Hz mode or something, just like when video games were ported in PAL regions.
    - Third, this port is riddled with bugs, everywhere. The most noticeable one is that when you pick up a shotgun, you can't have more than 50 bullets unless you use one, and only then you can collect up to 100 of them.

Seriously don't pay for that ****.
Dedicated fans have been making excellent source ports for the past fifteen years or so for FREE.
You'd be better off paying for DOOM 3 BFG Edition on Steam, then copying and pasting the wads for DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 in your favorite source port's folder on PC. You'd get all three games for a good price and in perfectly working condition.

I respect Bethesda and id Software for the excellent games they make and publish, but I can't believe they could let that port get released in its current state. Did John Romero test it ?

Truly a shame. At least the graphics look faithful to the original and the control's layout is better than PSX DOOM's.

People should be a little less bothered about how Bethesda want an email address and a good deal more concerned about how come a cheap, clean port of a 26 year-old videogame is the most fun there is to be had off the Switch store. The always-online DRM is just pants-on-head stupid for the fact that the Switch is supposed to be a portable console - entering an email isn't the inconvenience that people are complaining about.

The only thing that needs to be fixed is that this needs to not require a constant connection to a bethesda account to play and the speed needs to be adjusted to it's original pace - but let's be real here, these things should have been fixed well before it was even shipped out as a complete game. Don't give them your money for this port.

The babies around here need to stop whining about a company taking their email address, it's literally how a lot of businesses function nowadays and be thankful Bethesda didn't include Switch tax like many others.

Doom is a game that probably needs no introduction. Doom and Doom 2 fundamentally revolutionised first person multiplayer games through its local and dial-up play. It created the deathmatch genre and gave rise to the concept of a LAN party. If you play any networked computer game, you are fundamentally playing something that is built on the foundations started in Doom and Doom 2.

So how is Doom, one of the worlds greatest first person shooters, on the Switch? Absolute garbage. NO dial-up/Internet multiplayer. NO local network multiplayer. NEW: Split screen death match. Yes, in one of the dumbest moves in the history of all gaming, Bethesda have broken all of the parts of Doom that made it good and added the multiplayer from N64's Golden Eye.

I should point out that the split-screen multiplayer in N64's Golden Eye was an absolute joke, especially at the time. Now, we know why N64's Golden Eye was multiplayer - Nintendo 64 didn't have a network adapter. That didn't make setting up blankets and bits of cardboard to try to split the screen any less ridiculous.

Unfortunately the game is only distributed from the Nintendo eShop, so its not until you've bought it that you realise all of these massive features are missing. And, as always with the Nintendo eShop, they don't allow returns, only returns on physical media (for which this game is not made available).

So I guess I should review what actually is there. Well, its vanilla Doom, there are a couple of commercial add-ons, but you can't use your own WADs, you can't run up a copy of Aliens TC Doom or anything like that.

Uh, for input.... to be honest, consoles have worthless input methods for first person shooters. Joysticks are no substitute for a mouse and keyboard (a control combination that was born out of Doom and Doom 2, so another thing missing here). That said, I'd happily put up with the broken console controls to play other Switch players in Doom deathmatch, since we would all have the same handicap.... except that the multiplayer features are missing, so you can't do that.

So, because the controls are reasonably borked, I would say that playing Doom, single player, against the computer, is an exercise in pain - there is no pleasure playing the game this way, no elegance, and as mentioned a few times already, no multiplayer.

(full disclosure: I've also played the game co-op in split screen.... for about 1 minute. The problem is that the geniuses that ported this didn't seem to put a dead-zone on the joycons.... so joycons that don't normally drift in any game.... drift in this game. So you are always moving and turning to an extent... but the problem only seems to occur in split-screen multiplayer)

This game has entirely earned a 0/10. Well done Bethesda!

Blood. Gore. Violence. HELL. These are the core aspects Doom (1993) possessed. As I played throughout the game, episode by episode, I have realized and understood the relevance and the importance of this game to the FPS genre, or to even gaming history itself. It had everything an FPS could ever be; the fast-paced shooting, a variety of different kinds of weaponry, the diversity ofBlood. Gore. Violence. HELL. These are the core aspects Doom (1993) possessed. As I played throughout the game, episode by episode, I have realized and understood the relevance and the importance of this game to the FPS genre, or to even gaming history itself. It had everything an FPS could ever be; the fast-paced shooting, a variety of different kinds of weaponry, the diversity of enemies, a graphical staple of its time, a fascinating metal soundtrack, perfectly well-designed maps, loot, and etc. I enjoyed the hell out of this game on hard mode and had gameplay that filled me up with adrenaline every time I bust out my shotgun and shoot the heck out of the enemies that stands on my way, accompanied by the different kinds of metal genres, from heavy to thrash to ballad which just adds to the enjoyment and the immersion of the game. The enemies were very intimidating, from the Pink Demon to its invisible and more annoying version, the Spectre, and the Baron of Hell. There are still others, most notably the bosses that wait at the end of each episode (mainly The Shores of Hell, Inferno), the Cyberdemon, and the Spider Mastermind. These bad boys will give you a headache the moment you cross them in battle, so be prepared. Doom is very rich with levels or places, and each episode has its own distinct type of level design. Knee-Deep in the Dead is a relatively easy system to go through compared to the complexity TSH and Inferno were with their mappings. Most of the time in KDD, the paths are linear, with a few nooks and crannies here and there for the secret spots with loot to be placed in. TSH however, have more of a puzzling layout than KDD. It had tons of portals that grow in number by the time you progress into more places in the episode. The secrets are very well hidden and are to be given a lot of the player's time to complete each place. The enemies grow stronger here as well. Inferno on the other hand is littered with puzzle-like places. One of which is the Unholy Cathedral which was the only place in the game I struggled a lot with and gave a lot of time to exploring and finding the way out of that mess. It was still very fun because it also rewards you immensely. But if we're talking about a rewarding place in Doom, Limbo is where it's at. Enemies are a lot stronger here, but all of that depends on what mode you played the game. Game modes affect the mapping and placement of items. When going into harder modes, it also decreases the number of loot which leads to a scarce scavenge for the player, so he has to work with what he/she has which is an aspect I loved because it gave a challenge for the player to plan and strategize. There are tons of weapons in this game and have their own unique names and difference in power. The pistol is the first weapon you would possess, then comes the shotgun which is made to be your primary weapon, and probably the most balanced munition in the game in terms of firepower. The Chaingun is perfect for killing tons of enemies at once the moment you get your hands on it and has a ton of firepower to deal with the different types of enemies, especially ones that are harder to kill with the pistol or the shotgun. But this gets quickly replaced by the Plasma gun which literally obliterates the monsters within a couple of seconds of pressing the trigger button. Now the rocket launcher is insanely powerful. It blasts and incinerates anything the moment you release those rockets out of the hole. But be careful though, if you're too close enough from the explosion or the rocket's release, you'll be damaged a lot and might even kill you. The chainsaw is the chainsaw. It's my favorite weapon in Doom and is great for killing single enemies in close range and a good alternative whenever you get low or have no ammo at all. Doomguy's fist is also good, but be sure to always get the berserk kit so it adds to the punching power. Finally, the iconic BFG9K. This is THE weapon that perfectly embodies the "One shot, one kill"phrase. Doom is one of the best of the best. 10/10, see you in hell!! Expand

Doom's arrival on the wonderful system that is the Nintendo Switch is the perfect opportunity to be reminded of why it's such a fantastic experience despite its age. It's old-school FPS fun at its finest, and now you can carry it's dark corridors and hellish landscapes on the smallest of backpacks. Sadly, while the gameplay has been left intact, this version is far from the perfect port that it could be, due to a couple of odd omissions and changes - but at least it is super cheap (as it should).
