I don't understand the good reviews for this game. Yes the graphics and sound are nice, but the gameplay is just awful. There is no challenge at all! I just walk up to enemies and hold down the attack button. No dodging or blocking necessary - as soon as my health drops a bit it fills right back up thanks to some magic items I am wearing. This is not fun, it's boring as hell. Yes, there are higher difficulty levels, but those are locked for some reason until I level up my character. I really enjoyed the first Diablo game way back in 1997 or whenever it was released. I think Blizzard severely dumbed this game down for the consoles. I wish I could get a refund but Nintendo doesn't allow that. Expand

A wonderful port that captured me for more than a dozen hours. However, replaying me does not pull even six months later. However, the port is beautiful - probably this game should be with almost any owner of the Nintendo switch

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well finally after all these years I broke down and bought this on sale because I was bored and wanted a "new" switch game to play.

Diablo 2 was one of my favorite games of all time.

Oh my god Diablo 3 is so much worse than I ever could have imagined it to be. What the hell is this? This game was designed for 6 year olds. No character builds, no actual decision making about building your character, NO DIFFICULTY. Seriously I played on the hardest difficulty and never once used a potion, gave up even trying to dodge enemy attacks because they do NOTHING, and just held the A button down in every fight and just demolished everything including every single boss in the game. I literally never even heard a full bit of dialogue from the Bosses because they died before that could happen... ON THE HARDEST DIFFICULTY. Items are all indistinguishable from one another and catered to your character. Heaven forbid the player have to trade for items and whatnot right? Let's just guarantee every character always gets a ton of items. The drop rate for rares in this game is laughable. Literally drops more often than whites and blue items.

And another point - the story was never a strong suit of diablo 2 for me, but my god is the story cringeworthy in diablo 3. The way they killed of cain was so laughable. You get back to the town, everyone is just chilling, then somehow miraculously there is a group of enemies in the house unbeknownst to everyone standing literally outside the door of this shanty. Then he dies a pointless death and Leah goes on to be useless and so on and so forth. Don't even get me started on the boss voice acting either. Diablo was a menacing enemy in 1 and 2 but in 3 the dialogue I heard (didn't catch it all since you know, diablo literally dies/switches stages within seconds of pressing the a button on him) was so cringeworthy (I am legion, seriously??!) I just... my god just what the hell are they thinking???

A huge part of d2 was the online play as well, of which d3 has no need for. Pvp is non existent pretty much, the party size is limited to 4, you don't need help on any difficulty finding any items or doing anything really, so what's the point? As far as I know there's also no set items, synergies, runes for items (runes for skills wtf?), you know everything that would make the game make you have to pause and stop just stomping through this dopamine fest on autopilot.

Anyway that's my Ted talk thanks for listening. Diablo 4 sill suck too - guarantee it. 100% guarantee, I don't have any semblance of what anyone could even remotely begin to consider "faith" in "Blizzard" anymore (it shouldn't be legal for the team to retain this name, this is like when all the original members of an awesome band are far removed from it yet some jokers carry on as the official band and hack their way through songs as if they were some shoddy tribute band).

I don't have much to say about this game other than it was a fun experience with friends hacking things to death again and again. The gameplay was fun enough but did get old after awhile, and the story was solid but just was very difficult to handle in a multiplayer format where one wrong button click or one player moving a bit too fast could ruin the experience for the other players. The best description for this game is: basic and dumb. Most of the time you don't even have to dodge anything or make any planning about how to tackle large enemy groups, what items or skills to equip, it's just so brainless and bland altogether. I will raise the difficulty to extra hard to see if that improves anything but even if it makes the game more challenging i doubt it will become any more interesting because the setting is just meh, been there, done that, million times better in other games. Don't buy the hype and the fanboy 10/10 scores. There is nothing about this which is 10 out of 10 except for portability. It is objectively the worst modern console version of Diablo 3: 960p while docked, frame rate drops, particle effects and enemy density at low (if not lowest) settings, online coop behind Nintendo's half-assed Switch Online service, the list goes on.

First Skyrim, now Diablo - 6 year old ports that are the worst versions of each but charging full $60 MSRP and inexplicably getting 10/10 reviews simply because you can play them "on the go". There's more to playing a game then being able to play it on my lunch break and I'm not willing to sacrifice quality for portability. Limited portability at that, given the Switch's lousy battery life.

If you already have this on PS4, XBO or PC, there's no reason to spend yet another $60 on this.

My scoring for this game differs vastly between console and PC versions.

Console version score: 7 (PS4) A reasonably entertaining laid-back brainless couch-based game play experience with a controller. A strong seasonal character build can eventually get a mediocre player like myself up to greater rift level 100 - 105 and paragon 800+ before I start to lose interest. PC version

The screen clutter of enemy hordes makes keyboard/mouse game play more difficult, even with the enlarged pointer option enabled. Also older less dexterous hands like mine find keyboard game play further challenging in terms of hand/finger fatigue (I'm a generation-X gamer). As for the game play itself in my experience I find the legendary item drop-rate statistics to be broken on PC compared to the console version. Getting the same legendary item five times in a row from a rare upgrade is nothing out of the ordinary, sometimes even more. For this reason I seldom find myself going beyond a fresh level 70 character before getting absolutely bored and frustrated. At best I may reach paragon level 100 on PC.

As a newcomer to the series and after playing around 10 hours or so of the game co-op with my son I have to say that I was pretty underwhelmed by Diablo 3 and it's bland brainless gameplay.

We started the campaign in the standard difficulty setting and after a few hours of pretty much getting through every encounter and the first few bosses without so much as a scratch, we bumped up the difficulty hoping it would add a little challenge but it really did nothing other than to turn every enemy into an unsufferable bullet sponge. Unlocking abilities and leveling up didn't feel very satisfying as most enemies were always easy to defeat regardless of the character progression. The combat itself amounts to nothing but pressing every button in no particular sequence to unleash each of the different abilities, wait for cooldown, and repeat. That's literally it. Story, world, design etc. were all standard cookie-cutter dark fantasy fare, while graphics and level design are fine but equally mediocre and uninspired, which is basically what the entire game amounts to be. I will say that my 10 years old enjoyed himself A LOT more putting in around 50 hours of gameplay time and finishing the campaign and leveling up several different characters, so maybe he is the intended demographic for this type of game, but personally as a 34 year old who has grown up playing all types of RPGs, from JRPGs to western-style RPGs and a big fan of fighting games and hack'n slash games like Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta, having to endure this cliche world and puddle deep combat was often mind-numbing. I've read the game gets better post-game but the idea of playing it enough to get to that stage is completely outside of the realm of what I'm willing to endure as a gamer with a massive back-log of fantastic games I want to play and very little time to play them.

Can't comprehend how magazines have it higher than D2. D2 is soooo much better. D3 has worse looting, character building and general gameplay. Still decent for people how just want to play through the game once. Nothing good for people who want to enjoy it longer in comparison to D2.

Diablo 3 being portable, makes the Switch version the definitive one. Whether you like to play it in short bursts or in long sessions, the portability of the Switch makes anything possible. It really feels great either way. With a stable framerate and graphics that look awesome for a portable console, Diablo 3 gets a new life on the latest Nintendo console. And it rocks once again!
