    Demon Turf may not have tantalised my platforming taste buds as much as I hoped for but I can see it gathering a well-deserved following. The community has already shown the impressive possibilities of getting from A to B in style, and I’m sure once the game gets into the hands of the wider public the possibilities are only going to flourish and amaze even more. With that said, the speedrunning community does make up for only a small percentage of the 3D platforming fanbase. So to say Demon Turf is a great 3D platformer for that reason alone is probably stretching it a bit. For what it’s worth though, it is at least a competent one.

    Demon Turf is difficult to master, but when done it is very rewarding. It's one of the best games I've played this year and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

    Demon Turf is another fantastic 3D collectathon platformer, offering a bunch of activities to complete while also rocking a distinct visual style. There are a few technical hiccups, but they don’t distract you from what is an excellent adventure to defeat the Demon King.

    Demon Turf is at its best when it is providing complex platforming challenges. Its movement system is intuitive yet adaptive enough to provide plenty of options and satisfying shortcuts for adventurous players. It stumbles a bit through its combat but ultimately always comes back to platforming. Boss fights, while not incredible, are better than other combat encounters and showcase some incredible art. The performance on Switch is largely great, but when it hits a snag it tends to do so at the worst possible time. But for the rest of the time it’s a great looking, great sounding, and great-playing 3D platformer. This is one of those games where despite some flaws, you’ll find yourself returning to old worlds to clean up every last collectible as you work your way up the demon ladder.

    Demon Turf is a fantastic platformer that’s held back from true greatness by sections of dull and repetitive combat. Push through this, however, and you’ve got a game that rewards daring and bravery, bolstered by wonderful platforming controls that let you string together incredible combos. The visuals are initially a bit jarring, but the character design really shines through and give it a timeless aesthetic. If you’re a fan of 3D platformers from the 'golden' N64 era and beyond, this one is well worth a look.

    Demon Turf is most certainly not a game for beginners. You should know your way around Plattformers because this is much more precise thenDemon Turf is most certainly not a game for beginners. You should know your way around Plattformers because this is much more precise then Mario. It requires good controls to work and luckily the games controls are very crisp, sensitive and precise but that is a blessing and a curse. Very easily (out of habit) you might react erratic to correct and instead of making it and saving yourself, you kill yourself or at least loose a lot of progress. You will swear and rage on over this on occasion but you realize most of the time, it was you fault so don't go blaming the controls too much.
    BUT often enough the jump inputs were also eaten and it can cause you to fall to your doom and that is not the players fault.
    The wall jumping is also a bit weird. Sometimes a slight touch that wasn't intended and not looking like you were touching the wall causes you to get sucked to the wall and use an unintended wall jump, flinging you into the abyss or screwing up you jump. Other times when you actually want a wall jump, it doesn't recognize you touched the wall in some sections, even though you jumped broadside on the wall and this can ruin you.

On many levels Demon Turf has things going for it ranging from its visual style to its solid dialogue and voice acting to its cool soundtrack. The shame is that at the end of the day this is a 3D platformer at its core, and in that particular area it struggles, as you can gather pretty quickly by an oddly lengthy tutorial that mostly covers areas stronger games can take for granted as almost intuitive. In particular, the ability to drop a mobile checkpoint flag that you can return to in the level feels like an admission that mechanically the platforming can be problematic. I don’t doubt a part of the issue is the use of 2D figures moving on 3D backgrounds, something that gives the game a unique look but that greatly complicates depth perception, putting a round shadow on the ground below you or not. Whether reflecting on Mario titles or even indie contemporaries the platforming here is comparatively troublesome and the combat is generally underwhelming. I have no doubt that determined gamers who’ve exhausted their other options will adapt and plow through, likely enjoying themselves in the process, but if you’re less versed and looking for a rock solid indie 3D platformer there are several that I would consider stronger overall already out in the eShop.

Graphically, the Switch version leaves a lot to be desired, despite a distinctive Artsyle, and not all level themes are always hit. Passages with many opponents and combat interventions bring the gameplay to a complete standstill from time to time. Bosses are visually and musically nice but nothing special. All in all, Demon Turf is a nice indie title for fans of the 3D platforming genre with good ideas that should definitely be further developed in a successor and a few bad ideas that should be reconsidered.… Full Review »
