One of the best platforming experiences I've had in my short gaming history. The aesthetics, the soundtrack and especially the plot kept me engaged until the very end of the main story. The controls are simple, precise, but not really simple because you have to understand advanced movement if you want 100% completion, especially in chapter 9.

Level design was very good, and it introduces new mechanics in new chapter so it doesn’t feel boring. The combination of control, mechanics and level design makes the game hard, you will die thousand times. Some people tend to say the game was bad because it’s hard, we call these people a **** NOOB. Some people the story was good. It’s not. It’s unique, but the presentation and progression of the story wasn’t. But it still better than a guy need to saved a kidnapped princess. Point plus for uniqueness, point minus for people don’t know anxiety is a thing.

Music was good but not memorable. Recommended for people who likes 2d platformer, otherwise you will feel stuck replaying that one part over and over again with no way to progress otherwise. Pro tips : you **** NOOB can use assist mode

This is honestly one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played, and it only costed me €10 (on sale).
Great value for it's price and with tight controls and an amazing soundtrack it really disserves all the praise that it gets. Whenever I died (witch I did ALOT) it always felt like my fault and there is also no punishment for dying, you simply restart that small section of the level.

Whenever I died (witch I did ALOT) it always felt like my fault and there is also no punishment for dying, you simply restart that small section of the level. Difficulty can be extremely hard if you go for every collectable and 100% the game or can be easier if you just try to beat the story.
I personally tried to gather as much collectables as I could but it's ok if you don't because you can easily go back into any section of a level after you beat it, making it extremely easy to try to gather them later if you like.
Also don't worry the story is great but like all stories it's better not spoiled.
My only real complaints about the game are that in one section to progress to the post game it can be quite confusing and I needed to look up a guide (I won't say what it is for spoiler reasons). This is an extremely minor complaint.
I think if you want a good 2d Indie platformer and have about $15 you can't go wrong with Celeste.

This game is difficult but is totally doable if you keep practicing, and the controls are so smooth that it never really feels as a chore to beat a level (it is difficult because the game design is based to be challenging).

The music is good and also I really enjoyed the fact that the berries are optional. It really helps to know that they are there to impress your friends or if you wanna beat your own personnal high score.

For people who want a even more challenging game, they have the B-C sides and all the heart stuff to do (I didn't because I am not a masochist lol). It's too bad that those side quest are insanely hard because I would have love to be able to do some of them, but I am not fond of dying 1000 times just to understand how works some insanely precise mechanics, but that's really just me.

All in all, it's a great game that really deserves the praises. If you love fair platform challenges, it is here for you.

There's a lot of content post game, b-sides, c-sides, and strawberries + the two bonus levels. The puzzles really had me perplexed at times and it was all the more satisfying to figure them out because of that. It took a while to sink in, but visually the game is just gorgeous. You can really tell this game was a labor of love to make. And the music, oh my god the music, Lena Raine really pulled out all the stops on this project. It perfectly fits and is a mirror image to the gameplay. Beautiful compositions. It feels like the music is almost encouraging you on with inspirational melodies and friendly vibes. In fact every aspect of this game seems to encourage you from the music to the story, to the visuals, to the mechanics, it all just feels encouraging no matter how many times you die. And that is brilliant game design. I would give it a 10 but I've been rating games on the Anthony Fantano scale where 10 is pure perfection and virtually nothing reaches that height. Sue me. A very nice precision platformer in which the antiquated and basic style of the in-game sprites stands in perfect opposition to the magnificent backgrounds and the beautiful music which intensifies during the playthrough of the different chapters. And in its intended state, I just don’t like it.. im not one of those people that enjoy dying 1 million times in a video game, I want to relax and enjoy my games, not be on the brink of going mad…
Thankfully this game offers an assist mode to deal with this..
I gave the game a shot for how it was meant to be, you get a single dash though crystals and strawberries will refill this gash, you can climb walls and it’s a bunch of dashing and doging spikes supermeat boy style..
it didn’t take long for me to be like nah, im not doing this.. and played the rest of the game with assists on…
at first with just infinite dodges, but this game my character some super saiyan pink hair to give the visual of clearly im cheating right now, so I thought might as well turn damage off too..
so whats meant to be some ultra hard game for sadomasochists for me was an exploration game and I feel no shame in that, I got the story, I got to see every inch of celeste, collecting the baries, the crystal hearts, the cassetes to unlock the side b version of a chapter and better yet playing with assist doesn’t turn trophies off, and this trophy list is full of silver trophies for finding these collectables…
Needless to say playing with assists does take away the satisfaction of completing chapters and areas..
I got to get a feel for the games intention the most while trying to get a trophy for completing celeste on pico-8, that’s right, the devolopers are evil jerks.. I got to level 27 out of 30 before I gave up on the trophy and the platinum, so don’t think with assist mode this is all of a sudden some easy platinum trophy because it isn’t… mount celeste is going to be in your way of it one way or another..
somehow nearly 25% of players have this trophy though, I don’t see how. The game must have only sold like 4 copies and the one person that got it is a developer or their parents just didn’t love them.
    jokes, im kidding..
im just not one of those people that think, you know what would be fun?
dying over and over and over and over and over and over until muscle memory and luck prevent me from doing so,
    Its not my thing…
that being said I do again still see the greatness in this game, the brilliant level design, the brutal difficulty, the option to skip the difficulty and just explore, a great trophy list aside from the pico 8 bit..
Celeste is a really great package for people that love retro games, stress, or trophies
    I give Celeste an 8/10

It took me over 20 hours until I gave up (I completed the main 7 chapters of the game but did not finish 8th and 9th). And the reason I gave up is why I'm giving this game "only" 8/10. Although the high difficulty is intended, it may be frustrating at some times (especially if you do want to collect all those strawberries). If you want to relax after a hard day of work and play just for a half of an hour while you commute, it may be not the best experience.

The Dash is awesome but also annoying, I am good at planning jumps and how to do everything but the game limits me due to Dyspraxia as i accidentally press wrong buttons why can't the game have a planning jump function where you can type in commands and what point to execute the next command at least then it would feel like I accomplished something - Lucky i can use the assist mode for Immortality but once on it was like why even bother to turn it off I got to the end of chapter 3 just before the hotel guy became a boss and I died 1500 times on chapter 3 before giving up with the repetitive nature of the last room due to the terrible jumps near the end, long rooms should have a mid way check point to reduce the frustration but i guess an Immortality mode allows you to get to the end of the game at the cost of feeling no accomplishment what so ever. The chapter 3 end boss would have killed me for sure with stupid charges etc had Immortality mode not been on, the game will become to punishing for a majority of players and games that have to use Immortality mode built in cheats are therefore badly balanced. Positives good mechanics , negatives no way to remap controls not having the option to hover for a moment when using dash so you can move directions correctly and not constantly smash yourself into the stuff that kills you. Will now finish game with cheats on cause its to hard for me to complete otherwise, I won't feel any sense of accomplishment from it through and accomplishment is a big part of the game.

The characters are interesting and have charm, but some of the long rooms really dapper the game. Its a shame the jump and dash couldn't have be designed as a single button with a hover pause while in mid air to allow you better control over dash with your stick.

    - The game is very transparent with letting the player know that collectibles don’t hold any actual value. Completionists will have a field day but casual players won’t have to tear their hair out over collecting everything to unlock in-game items or progression
    - The final stretch of the game is challenging and reaching the end feels very rewarding
    - Animal Crossing-esque sound effects for dialogue

    Mixed:
    - Minor pacing problems throughout the story
    - One level near the end of the game doesn’t have collectibles, disincentivizing people from exploring and kind of breaking the flow. Regardless, it’s still a very well crafted area.
    - The long nature of some of the levels makes exploring for collectibles very time consuming, but the selectable checkpoints and the collectibles display does help alleviate this problem

    Bad:
    - Trying to move precisely using the Switch’s imprecise analog stick can add some unnecessary challenge and frustration

I bought the digital version of this game for $10. The critics have this ranked as a top 5 game. It’s not a top 5 game, and not even a steal at $10. It is, however, a very solid and difficult platformer with a great story. It takes about 8-10 hours to beat and a lot more to 100% by collecting all the strawberries. And now that it goes on sale for $5, it is a steal. Go out and get it.

But I quickly realised it was a little outside my skill level at the time and it took me some time to get good and get into it. The steep learning curve made it a bit less enjoyable for me starting out, so unless you know you love fast-paced, challenging platformers you may want to reconsider buying the game.
But for those that do love that challenge, this game is amazing.

It is a very nice and relatable story for honestly anyone. It is easy to invest in her and the handful of other NPCs that you will encounter. I love the character design. Each person is unique and the way the animators use the portraits (next to text boxes) helps tell the story in a perfectly different way. However the pixel art style is cool but nothing too special (I don’t think I would recognize a screen shot from the game unless it is from a big set piece or has a strawberry in it). Celest has some of the nicest feeling platforming that I have experienced in a while. The use of the dash mechanic and the environment is both creative and frustrating (yet fair). Technically the game is great. It runs so smoothly and feels very responsive. No platforming and dash mechanics aren’t new, but they are shined to a mirror Polish here. Celest is a lot of fun and well worth the price. It isn’t a very long game, but it doesn’t need to be. There are several challenges and unlockables. However to achieve and see all of the content, it is a whole new level of difficulty, that I don’t think most players would be willing to endure. Expand

I dont want to have to jump into every part of every wall on ever level, well also being chased by something that will kill me if there isnt a hidden area there. Too much of the games best content is hidden away and most will get bored trying to find it.

Would have been a better game if you could just pick your level like super meat boy and if things werent hidden.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Celeste is a good game. The problem with this game is the movement. Sometimes I would want to dash in a up/down/left/right direction, but the game would give me a diagonal dash causing me to die from the environmental hazards. The narrative is lackluster. There's no subtlety with the "theme" of the game. This a bare bones video game. The movement does work well with the narrative, but there isn't any actual combat. It is just movement in the form of running. It works decently. It does kind of play into the narrative, but not well enough to the extent of it being a phenomenal game. The narrative itself is riddled with pacing issues, There's very little, then you get a multiple choice lore dump at some point. The final level is oddly difficult compared to the rest of the game because it does seem difficult at one point, but the finale dials it up to the White Palace level in Hollow Knight. I get it's the finale, but it did feel like like the difficulty didn't match the rest of the game. This game is good, but it doesn't do anything I haven't seen other games do better. I tried using the pro controller, but the dash issues I mentioned earlier were still present. That's all I got. Oh, the mental issues narrative isn't really good. I get it works because Madeleine is running away. It just doesn't work. The feather mechanic didn't work as well I thought it would, then it didn't matter because the game took it away. It might help people, but this kind of narrative has already been explored, and this game doesn't add anything to the conversation that hasn't already been said and it doesn't try to say anything in a different way. It starts out sort of interesting, playing as a character that has depression and anxiety, but the game ends up forgetting that and decides to have a bunch of fourth wall breaking stuff as every indie game does nowadays and the last moments of the game left me thinking about how I was going to end up dissatisfied (and I was). I really liked the music though, some of it was memorable. The gameplay controls very nicely but the level designs of the B sides are very bad and were not worth playing. I don't usually play platformers, but I do play some of them time to time, Celeste doesn't really impress me in any way, but I wouldn't say it's a bad game, far from it, it's not really memorable or something *really* special, but it has its qualities, in some way or the other

The controls feel really responsive, but sometimes it does its hiccups, it's extremely basic as well, all you can do is move left or right, jump, climb and dash (grounded or not), some levels take advantage of your movement options, it's simple, but if this game ever gets a sequel/spin-off I'd really want it expanded in some way.

The levels themselves tho... my god, they're too big, what the hell am I playing? A metroidvania or a platformer? It's so easy to get lost sometimes in most levels, some levels have linear sections but the spike in difficulty in these are ridiculous sometimes, and sometimes I got really focused in one part of the level that I completely forgot about the other parts of the map, basically just making the level worth revisiting for a good section of it and just that, the only real memorable levels I've found were the mirror temple (the 5th level), and The Summit (the 7th level) and just that, the other levels were chipped away as just "oh I remember this part" or stuff like that

most of my deaths (had 862 in total) were because of **** moments like those red orbs going the wrong way or hitting the wall with those stardust walls, but did it feel unfair in any way? Not really, there's a difference between fun challenging platforming and **** difficult levels, due to how quick you die and how close you respawn to where you messed up (sometimes), it felt like a fair trade-off for me, but the difficulty of the platforming just discourages me to go for the optional collectibles, because that's where the more difficult platforming is.

The characters aren't really something too memorable but I can see that they made them stand out in someway, one character is optimistic while the other is pessimistic, one is stubborn/confident while the other one is the opposite of that, some of the dialogue I found entertaining while others i found... "Why the **** did you even do that to begin with??"

I think the game started to feel a bit more interesting at the end of it, something that I don't really quite like in some games because it just feels like they put more attention to the end of the game but the rest was untouched/unpolished, and when the game was over, I was like: "That's it?"

I like the immersive music/sound effects, it makes the game a little bit more charming.

The amalgamation of these things make this game have some sort of charm to it, for me, it's nothing really that special, and I wouldn't see myself playing it again sometime soon, is it a bad game? far from it, is it an amazing game also? Also far from it, it's nothing that can't be replicated/rivaled anytime soon, overall, it's a fine game, but not something I would revisit, like some other games like Terraria or Sonic Mania.

Honestly, I didn't mind the first 995 times i died (actual number- not an exaggeration). Then the climax begins and each screen has multiple sections that need to be done perfectly or you die and do them all again. It goes from a challenge to chore very quickly. I died an additional 1400+ times on the final 2 sections. It's a real shame because the story is strongest at that point. I get why they made it so hard, but it totally breaks the engagement and nearly spoiled the entire game.

A beautiful game, but the difficulty is a little over the top. I wish games like this would be smarter about difficulty: having a high skill ceiling is great, but you should not make your game inaccessible to people who are not hardcore gamers. I play games to relax, not to be frustrated - if I could refund the game, I would. This way I just won't buy the next one from this studio.

The difficulty pretty fair, you die a bunch, but aside from a death count there isn't really any repercussions to dying other than having to try again from the beginning of that small area, so it's no big deal. Overall I was pleased with the difficulty level and had fun playing through this game, though it does get a bit boring at times.

Overall I was pleased with the difficulty level and had fun playing through this game, though it does get a bit boring at times.

However, one of my issues with the game and the main reason I couldn't bring myself to give it a higher score is that I was not too impressed with the controllers. The mechanic of having to hold a button to hold on to the walls and manually move up and down (different than most platformers where you hold on to walls upon contact and slowly slide down) combined to a dash ability that didn't feel very precise (I found that the game was a little too sensitive in detecting dashes as a diagonal movement when you're actually trying to go straight) made me not love the flow of the movements in this game, and as a platformer that's a big deal. The movement mechanics were obviously a design choice, and I suppose it's purely going to depend of the opinion of the player, but, personally, while I wouldn't call it bad and I did get used to it fairly quickly, I also I didn't love it. The flow of the movements just didn't feel great for me.

Another point that I didn't love was some of the visual design aspects of the levels. Sometimes things are not very visible or clear. For example, chapter 4 has some pink platforms in front of a pink background. I found myself more often than I would like to admit not noticing at first something that was right in front of my face and obviously made to be used (and I mean literally not seeing it at first). As this is not something I find myself experiencing on other games of the genre, I have to assume it's an issue I had with the design of this game in particular.

And finally: the story. Not going to lie, I didn't like it. The dialogs, especially the ones with your "evil" self, are pretty cringy and felt pretty shallow. I understand what they were aiming for with the theme of overcoming depression and anxiety, and I have played other games that did a phenomenal job with this theme, but Celeste just wasn't one of them. Perhaps it was the characters and the dialogs, or perhaps it was that story felt out of place with the gameplay (probably both), but the story didn't really work for me and felt mostly cringy and something I wanted to skip.

tl;dr: not one of my favorite platformers, and I probably won't be replaying it in the future, but I still had fun as a one time playthrough.

Challenging, somewhat overhyped, definetly overpriced action platformer. With no flaws in execution. Get it on Sale. If the price drops below 10 Euros, add 2 points; if it drops below 5 Euros, add 3 points.

Celeste is certainly a fine game and I've clearly enjoyed playing it (having now logged over 12 hours). It's difficult without ever being unfair, brings an exceptional soundtrack, and has gorgeous retro/pixelated graphics the belie the depth of the storyline.

However, after the initial intrigue had worn off I found the gameplay had become largely repetitive (jump, mid-air jump, climb, repeat) - the different worlds not offering enough variation to avoid the sensation of having done it all before. There were also some other admittedly small issues (minor narrative pacing issues and the fact that the controls would benefit from a D pad) meaning that I simply didn’t find the game as revolutionary or original the many suggested it might be (so many of which went so far as to mark Celeste as the best 2d platformer ever). In short, a solid game that perhaps just isn't for me.

Somehow, I can't get into many of those hypetrain games...at all. It's well made, the graphics are great, controls solid, but...it's not for me. I'm not the type of guy who likes to stare at a screen trying to memorise button combinations, trying stuff over and over and over... I'm sure it's an enjoyable challenge for some, but not for me.

Actually I think this game is very much overrated. The gameplay is often frustrating. If you like games which you have to do the same again, again, again then you might like it. But there are much better games which have the same concept, for example meat boy. I actually love platformer games but there are also much better games (design, story, concept, etc) than Celeste. I truly wanted to like and appreciate the story being told here, but I found it more frustrating than anything, and that is quite disappointing. And perhaps more disappointingly, the gameplay did not feel compelling enough (despite its solid level of challenge) to help me push past the failings of the story. Overall, a perfectly functional game with a disappointingly simplistic perspective on depression and mental health. Expand

Compared to other great indies like cuphead, hollow knight, dead cells, gris etc., this game feels like another mobile 3$ game

Very over hyped. Music is by far it's.high point as the game just...isn't very fun. No idea why I fell for the hype and wasted $5 knowing it wasn't my sort of thing. Have enough frustration without a game of see how many times you die adding to it. Don't take the plunge unless you know you like trying to do the same jump 500 times.

Gameplay is average. Story is terrible and makes you want to stop playing it. Don’t spend more than five dollars if you want this.

Stop Right There. Do NOT buy this game. It will be a painful waste of money.

If you're looking for a challenge and hate yourself, buy this game and waste your life on it, please.

The story? Meh. Common tropes about overcoming personal weakness. That makes it a standout game? Are you serious?

Tight controls? Absolutely not! The more difficult levels (one screen is one level, typically) rely too much on luck to complete. You can find yourself rehashing the same jump attempt for 20 minutes. And when you succeed? You have no idea what you did different that time. That's luck. Not skill.
Which means that the game is a Failure at developing skill in players via play.
It also means the switch analog stick is a Horrible input method for performing such fine movements.

The art? If you usually don't like pixelated art in games, this game is in no way going to change your mind. I hate pixelated graphics. I don't care if it takes more effort to make. It looks awful. And if you're going to be making players replay the exact same move over and over for over 10 minutes on the same exact screen until they get lucky, the screens should be beautiful to look at.

The music? Actually very good. I bumped up my score a full point for music.

The other 3 points are pity points. Some people worked very hard to make this title, and even though it galls me that a game this bad is one of the highest rated games on Switch, the fact that they made a game that some people seem to really enjoy is worth something.

Mario games have charm and soul. This game is an ugly, repetitious bore that tricks players into thinking they've achieved something when success is too often dependent on luck.

I can't help but wonder how many of these high scores were bought.

A very overrated game with nothing too special. The great feature is the soundtrack, which is really good, but the rest of the game is just like any other indie shovelware. It would deserve a 6, maybe a 7, but I gave it a 4 because the saddest thing is that the game is hyped by the specialized media just because the political views and connections of the author, which is a very disgusting fact.

It tells a surprisingly deep and emotional story featuring a relatable main character and it all blends uniquely together to make one of the finest gaming experience of the year. Celeste might not look it but, just like the mountain Madeline is so determined to conquer, it towers above the rest quite easily.

As most indie-keen gamers already know, Celeste is a phenomenal 2D platformer. Almost everything about it comes together to make a satisfying and challenging game that'll thoroughly put your skills to the test.

My hands actually hurt from gripping the Switch but I couldn’t stop, and when I finally landed on the other side of one of the many gauntlets that Celeste wears like a medal, I felt both relief and curiosity as to what it would throw at me next. It’s a rewarding experience and a game that I’m honoured to issue a perfect score.
