The experience of playing Candleman is as charming as it is simple. An action-adventure game with puzzles, designed around a candle questioning their reasons to live seems unusual enough but Candleman's level design and puzzles, which fit like a glove on the Nintendo Switch format, make this game something any player can immediately get attached to. Candleman would be an even better experience if it was more ambitious and went beyond its base concepts.

With gameplay and visuals are not too dissimilar to Little Nightmares, Candleman could almost pass as a horror title, but this isn’t quite the case. There’s nothing to really threaten your life other than the odd trap and bottomless pit, and whilst it’s certainly dark, it’s filled with brilliant flashes of vibrant light and abstract shapes, making the game really quite beautiful to behold at times. Unfortunately, however, it’s also an incredibly easy experience, and despite the various puzzles you’ll find scattered throughout the game, there’s very little here that will prove too strenuous. But if that’s the kind of experience you’re specifically after, then Candleman is a worthy addition to your Switch library, offering a relaxing gameplay experience with ethereal visuals that will keep you busy for several hours.

Candleman: The Complete Journey is an average puzzler that seems to show off everything it has early on, leading to a flat experience overall.

Easy, little platforms with loads of atmosphere. Not much of a challenge but constant additions of new mechanics keep it interestingEasy, little platforms with loads of atmosphere. Not much of a challenge but constant additions of new mechanics keep it interesting throughout. Narrative is mysterious and sometimes borderline frightening. Full Review »
