It’s derivative, but it’s derivative of things I really like (Zelda, Dark Souls, 3D Platformers) so I think it’s great.

I rarely ever complete games on this level. The last one I put this much time into was Hollow Knight and I gave that one a 10 out of 10 too. Robi Studios knocked this one out of the park. The simple yet deep controls and strategies in this game harken back to Zelda gameplay. No reading tutorials or dialogue for hours on end just to get a hang of things. It’s fun from minute one. The value you get for the price of this game makes the AAA studios look like they’re digging their games out of a dumpster. Games like these are why I never sleep on indie titles anymore. They are the games we grew up with in the late 90s/early 2000s. It’s challenging as hell. But that challenge reaps its weight in rewards if you persevere. I can’t stress the level of content and passion present here. You will collect swords and cloaks faster and in such a large quantity that you won’t even have time to try out you’re new gear before you’re given a new/awesome set that will taunt you from the inventory screen. No gatcha mechanics or rnJesus BS here. All equipment is pre-staged and it’s up to you to discover and claim for yourself. It’s very possible to find the most powerful swords before the final boss so exploration is encouraged. And don’t even get me started on the atmosphere. Maybe I’m a sucker for once thriving now desolate magnificent kingdoms to explore. Or maybe I just hate how over populated our world is and these games provide a tranquil escape. Either way I will be looking forward to anymore content released in the world of blue fire should Robi Studios decide to revisit this true work of art. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game at first, until I realised how utterly ridiculous some of the platforming void challenges were. Five of the twenty voids infuriated me so much, I had to stop playing for a while. Additionally, the game is full of bugs; I fell through the floor and continued to fall beyond the programming of the game, I had to fight the fish boss in the water temple three times because he kept freezing and no damage could be given or recieved, and the BIGGEST ONE OF ALL!!! The key for the final of the three bosses before the Queen, Von gives it to you, glitched into a Ruby in my bag and I cannot progress any further, so I will never complete the game. Ruined it Expand

This is really a great game. If it wasn't so buggy it would be a definite 10 for me. I got stuck in a treasure chest recently. Ugh. Still the world is beautiful. The music. And the frustration is starting to pay off.

Edit: I had to lower my score from 8 to 7. This game keeps crashing. Developers please fix.

Definitely an early contender for Indie Game of the Year '21. The controls are smooth as silk and very responsive, making it possible to adjust to mistakes in the fantastic platforming. Great music, great art style and intriguing story. Combat isn't the worst but it isn't the best. Honestly this game's strength is in its platforming and esthetic. I look forward to what ROBI comes up with next.

Blue Fire the platform ninja zelda title I always wanted.
For an indy game it has amazing controls, fantastic level design, and graphics that suite the game well.
Some people may find parts to be a bit frustrating, like the lack of checkpoints and long runs back after death, or the lack of any kind of map. I find these to be parts are part of what makes the game difficult but rewarding.

I find these to be parts are part of what makes the game difficult but rewarding. If you get lost easily in 3d worlds you might struggle, but you'll likely memorise most areas and get good and running through them really fast by the time you finish them.
There is no X on map, you have to explore to find everything. You'll find out of reach areas and try over and over different ways to see if you can access them until you. The skill progression is nicely paced and slowly trains your muscle memory so that stringing together multiple moves (jump, wall run, jump, wall run, dash, double jump) is second nature the first time you try it. The power options (spirits) are good enough to matter but limited enough to be simple and easy to follow. This game has struck the perfect balance of making death matter and not be something you want, but without it being so bad that you'd be tempted to rest your game and start from an old save (which you can't do anyway).
This is one of the most fun I've had on the switch. I suspect other folks will not be as enthusiastic about this game as I am (10/10) but I expect anyone who loves platforming and adventure will dig it.

The game has pretty standard platforming with a simple variable-height jump and a dash move. One novel thing about the dash is, like jumping, you can change the distance of your dash based on how long you hold the button down. This mechanic is used fairly often, so mastering it will be key.

The platforming challenges are pretty substantial, which emphasizes a major flaw when it comes to platforming: the character shadow. In most 3d platforms, there is a little "shadow" that shows exactly where your character is going to land. This is essential for 3d platforming as the lack of depth perception makes distances tough to judge. Blue fire does contain this shadow for your character, but it doesn't show up on some platforms. This means for several jumps you just have to guess that you are over your target. Save points are scarce and loading times are long, so you will often find yourself plunging to your doom for guessing wrong, and having to redo a long section.

The combat is very reminiscent of wind waker with lock-on, strafing, and dodging. The enemies are decently varied, each with their own quirks to overcome. The basic design of the enemies is solid, but the hitboxes are atrocious. You will find yourself getting hit even though your character may be a meter away from the enemy's sword for instance. Thankfully, there is a shield mechanic which allows you to consume mana to tank hits. Mana is regenerated by hitting enemies, so this is a very viable way to do combat. Because of the hitboxes, you will find yourself relying on this mechanic more than dodging.

Another flaw with the combat is the base attack. Much like later 3d zelda games, your character will automatically dash in the direction of the locked-on enemy when attacking. If you aren't locked on, your character will dash to the nearest enemy (even if it is behind you). In most games, this is a non-issue. However, Blue Fire often has you fighting enemies on precarious terrain, with plenty of places that can cause you to fall. This dash makes it extremely risky to fight without locking on, as you will find yourself dashing in a direction you don't expect, causing you to plunge to your death. At the same time, there are several encounters where locking on is detrimental because of the number of enemies you are facing. If I were the developer, I would immediately patch in an option to turn this dash off and make the character attack in place, as the dash severely clashes with the design of the rest of the game.

All in all, the game is fun enough that I intend to finish it. If the shadow issue were fixed, the hitboxes tightened up (or animations adjusted to match the hitboxes), and the dashing motion on attack were removed, this game could be a solid 9/10.

My other issue is the platforming, where timing your dashes can be frustrating. It gets easier though, after you obtain the double jump, giving you more control on where to land. But that will likely take the first 6 hours of your play through.

+ Length and sidequests and potential for replayability makes it feel like it is worth the money.
x Artstyle is cute and simplistic so the graphics didn't really matter much
x No map, which ultimately I didn't mind much but can be a bit jarring
x Combat was a bit dull and repetitive. Most enemies are reused across regions, they just do varying amounts of damage (usually way more than expected) tied to a different element. Generally every enemy has the same approach (except one in the fire region).
x Boss fights were easy. I only had to fight one boss more than once: the final boss.
x Controls have wonky rules. For example, you can jump normally if you walk off a platform, long after any "coyote time" would take effect. This wonkiness becomes more pronounced as you get more upgrades.
    - "Voids" are platforming challenges that will test your patience more than your skills. No checkpoints and a lot of the platforming is difficult to tell where your character is going to land.
    - Void damage/death kicks you out of the void, pretty pointlessly - don't waste your fire (self heals) in here
    - Switch had massive framerate issues in voids, making some nearly impossible. I prevailed through sheer force of will and in one case, bypassing parts of the puzzle because it felt like I was literally playing a slideshow.
    - Buggy. Got stuck in closed chests, in doors, just on the floor to where I couldn't jump. In the first temple, lowering the water level was one-directional, leading me to drown if I climbed the ladder from the bottom floor.
    - Story seemed to not know where it wanted to go. Starts off with something about 6 gods, but then changes direction to the 3 lords. Felt like the 6 gods arc went unfinished.

If you like significant challenges and having your patience tested, this game is worth a try.

The platforming sections (void levels) are ok, with the exception that some of their designs are downright bad, and the fact that whenever you take damage you return to the beginning. A similar problem occurs in normal gameplay with checkpoints, which are spaced really badly throughout the world. Bad game design is generally a recurring issue in the game- the bosses are pretty bad, some enemies are designed horribly in the sense that they are just there to annoy you and take away from the game, most of the areas are extremely repetitive etc.
Tl;dr- gameplay is mediocre at most, and the game is badly designed.

    -Plot
It's really bad lol. The game basically tries to be Hollow Knight and Zelda at the same time, and this resulted in having a really bad, uninteresting, kind of funny (because of how bad it is) story. At first it seems like the game is a dungeon-based zelda-like game, with a pretty boring plot to drive it. Then the game pulls a 180 and tries to pull a Hollow Knight and have the player defeat 3 bosses in order to stop the bad stuff in the world (which is an obvious Calamity Gannon malice ripoff), and the reason for this doesn't even make sense. The main character doesn't have a motivation to do what he does, other characters who seem more capable than him are purely useless and are a bad excuse to give irrelevant and boring plot details. The name of the game- Blue Fire (which is a thing in the game) isn't even relevant to the main plot, and sometimes I wasn't even sure what the main plot was.

In general- average at most gameplay and game design, bad , weird, and boring plot. Go play Hollow Knight or Zelda instead lmao.

Exploration: 9/10 - I often spent alot of time exploring, there is quite a bit to discover, and the game does a great job of giving the user just enough details to have them go find more, the dungeons and the side quests do a good job of that.

This is a good game, a very good game I would even dare say, but it suffers from its issues a little too much. The combat feels good, but there are only 3 types of enemies. The platforming feels great, but the decor in each area is very same-y, making it difficult to orient yourself when exploring, backtracking or chasing collectables. And then, there's the lack of polish.. Bland menus, strait-to-black loading transitions, lack of animation for certain actions.. And the character's arms constantly clip through its swords when it's running..

I have to admit I really like the story though. It's told mostly through the classical Zelda-style of running into the same NPC over and over again, him offering advice and lore over the course of the game and that was done really well. Although (yes, another criticism) it's a bit convoluted and confusing. I have nothing to say against the NPC overall design. That and the writing are absolutely spot-on. It's funny, quirky, and each character has its own personality, making it fun to interact with them. I haven't talked to ALL NPC in a game in a very long time..

Overall, this is a really great game. But the amount of issues I've had with it can't justify me a higher score. I don't think it deserves lower than that. With a big 1.1 patch fixing most of its cosmetic bugs, (I didn't get a single crash yet) I think could become a great little gem, proudly filling the little niche it created for itself.

The biggest annoyance was the multiple loading-screens required to get back to Lord Sirion after a death: 1. Death loading screen 2. Entering the Fire Chamber door loading screen. 3. Unskippable cutscene of opening boss arena door. 4. Thankfully skippable cutscene of Sirion coming out to fight.
I'm no stranger to long walk-backs to fight a boss (played all From Software games), but these were the most tedious.
Those Void levels were all a blast though (except the elevator ones).
Similar situation for the final boss.
The game starts out strong, but has some pacing issues and struggled to get me across the finish line with enthusiasm.
As the others say, yes, Blue Fire is derivative in almost every aspect of the game. But the devs still made something overall fun, so I'll take it. Look forward to seeing what they release next and how they grow beyond Blue Fire.

Arte magnífica, boa lore, boa jogabilidade e excelente progressividade.

I really enjoyed my time with Blue Fire. The mechanics were solid to play around with, combat (for the most part) was engaging and enjoyable, I enjoyed the upgrades / the wonderful array of outfits to switch to over the course of the game.

I really enjoyed my time with Blue Fire. The mechanics were solid to play around with, combat (for the most part) was engaging and enjoyable, I enjoyed the upgrades / the wonderful array of outfits to switch to over the course of the game.

I'd say the weakest part of the game is the presentation of the story at the beginning. It wasn't immediately clear to me that they were going for a "figure it out as you go" for the first 15-25 minutes of gameplay so at the beginning I thought that perhaps they just didn't have time for a story and this was going to be mostly a momentum based 3D platformer.

Eventually, it became clear to me that there was a story of an abandoned kingdom that was in need of liberating. A simple story, but a decent enough one to continue to keep me engaged between bossfights and void challenges.

The Voids: This is where the game shines. There are a series of obstacle course style levels scattered around the game. These can reward the player with items used to upgrade your character's power. Completely optional, and a wide array of difficulty, these voids play out similar to the hidden levels in Super Mario Sunshine. You start at one end, and must reach the goal, all the while making large jumps, keeping up on a moving/rotating platformer, avoiding death spikes, etc. The reason the voids feel so good is that the voids are fully designed in their geometry, and a mastery of the momentum/movement mechanics can reward a player for thinking outside the box. More than once, did I find myself sequence breaking these rooms/ and or finding a creative solution to avoid a spike filled hallway. The developers allowing players to jump outside the intended pathway and not immediately die allowed me as a player to really feel rewarded for utilizing each bit of platforming mechanic they had given me.

The combat is pretty fun. Some enemies are more frustrating than others, but overall the combat doesn't overstay its welcome too much. The bosses are well designed and feel unique from one another, although they all boil down to "survive, then wail on the bad guy for a moment." (Which is fine) I would have liked to see perhaps one boss that joined the design aspects of the voids to create an obstacle course like hallway, that the player could then deal damage to the boss once they successfully navigated it.

If you like momentum platforming, I'd say this is definitely one to check out. It might not be for everyone, and some of the mechanics for platforming need to be upgraded/unlocked to reach its full movement potential, but by the back half of the game it felt really natural and fun to be running around.

I was so incredibly disappointed when i finally played this... The Combat is clunky and irritating, Enemys are mind numbingly generic, platforming is mediocre at best and to top it off you have to deal with all the bugs and typos. The game has a very unfinished feel to it.

I love it, it's really fun, but I can definitely see it's very flawed and unpolished.

I could basically call it a 3D style hollow knight, as both games have good art direction and occasionally annoying / frustrating platforming. Also Zelda with the voids (dungeons). The exploration was great and I would have rated this game higher, but they had late game bosses that were different versions of the same monster, and the collecting you have to do to unlock two of them felt like a let down as one in particular weakly recycled previous areas for the purpose. Still, if you like 3D platformers, I think you'll like this one just fine. Expand

There's a slow burn to this fire, but it's certainly worth waiting for it to catch and see the sparks. Blue Fire offers up a challenging, and dynamic 3D platforming experience that is sure to make it a cult hit with those brave enough to persevere through the frustrating opening - but 'cult' it will remain, with little chance of garnering attention from wider audiences, sadly, as there are just too many issues to elevate this to something more. The recycling of areas in that second half combined with the flimsy fundamentals stops this from becoming a classic.

By blowing on the dormant flames of Souls iconography, Blue Fire brings an experience with an authentic and challenging character to the panorama of independent development, evoking an almost melancholy scent. The inspiration from names such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario does not betray any lack of personality, on the contrary it reveals the attention of a team - that of ROBI Studios - which has been able to combine all the influences sought elsewhere with great coherence and playful effectiveness. The result is a 3D metroidvania that makes good platforming its stylistic code, net of the frustration inherent in some phases, on which, however, the goodness of the proposed challenge and the charisma of its atmospheres allow you to easily fly over.

3D platform games are too often intended for kids. Where Mario and co. are a proverbial splash pool, Blue Fire immediately throws the player into an Olympic-sized swimming pool, filled with piranhas and other mischief. The concept of the game is great, unfortunately it is poorly executed.
