    Despite having a shallow tutorial, Battle Chasers is perfect for RPG lovers and beginners in the genre, bringing everything a great RPG should have: an engaging storyline, dungeons full of loot, extensive Bestiary and a very different status/upgrade system. Even with time-consuming loadings giving a "brake" on the "flow" of the game, the player is compensated with magnificent artworks and tips on the loading screen.

    Battle Chasers: Nightwars is a damn good update to JRPGS of old, carrying the genre into 2018 without sacrificing what made it so appealing to begin with. The fact it’s now portable on the Switch just makes it better still.

    Despite a title that suggests it came out of a name generator, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a satisfying slice of JRPG that forges a confident, colourful character of its own from formulaic ingredients. The approachable comic style, plus a couple of neat mechanics that encourage experimentation, give it a freshness that belies the age-old systems at its core, and it doesn’t waste your time with filler. Depending on your skill, you’ll probably spend around 30 hours on the critical path – comparatively breezy in RPG terms – though there’s plenty of side content to occupy you beside the main quest, plus a trio of heroes you’ll probably shun on your first playthrough.

    Even though the content updates from the other platforms are included from the get-go and make this a decent port of the tactic role-playing to Switch, there is still too much grind, too many fights against weak opponents. Plus you encounter performance problems that were not present on other systems.

    Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a solid RPG with a strategic battle system and challenging dungeon-crawling, but it’s held back by its harsh reliance on grinding. Regardless, its slower playstyle can work in spurts thanks to the Nintendo Switch’s handheld mode, which works well aside from some lag. If you are a retro RPG fan who won’t mind the grind, the game’s worth checking out.

The component parts — isometric dungeon-crawling, turn-based combat, overworld exploration — all offer fresh twists on the ‘90s mechanics that inspired them. The battle system is fine-tuned and tactical, forcing you to attack quickly and aggressively in order to build up your magic meter for later. The dungeons encourage repeat visits with remixed rooms and new puzzles. The fantasy-meets-steampunk story, while fairly simple, is brought to life by glorious comic-book visuals. The difficulty is above-average in a good way (not the Dark Souls kind). All in all a very good, solid, 8/10 adventure game.… Expand

Battle chasers has a lot of good going for it. Fun engaging game play, memorable well voiced characters, and a fun aesthetic design play in it's favor. Other aspects like poor optimization, archaic RPG mechanics, and a lackluster story keep this game from being one of the greats.

    Combat is where this game truly shines. the overcharge mechanic makes for a unique engaging experience that will keep you enticed through the 30+ hours of the campaign. A lack of passive character leveling however; means you are essentially forced into picking 3 of the 6 party members to play through the whole game. Characters not in combat gain zero experience and the only way to swap active party members is to return to the hub area and manually add them to the roster. Leveling your bench warmer amounts to pointless grinding unfortunately.

    The Music doesn't have any tracks that truly stand out, but the score fits the aesthetic of the game well enough. Character designs are unique and memorable with a quality cast of actors to boot. The design aesthetic is well presented, reminding me of Super Mario meets Diablo 3 but with JRPG mechanics. The story is extremely minimal with no real character growth and a mostly generic plot told in the form of comic stripes and bits of text lore found in the games 8 dungeons.

    The truly annoying part of Battle Chasers on the Nintendo Switch were the technical issues that persisted through out my play through. A lack of optimization meant ever present frame drops/skips especially in combat. There were 6 crashes over the course of my campaign, and loading screens would tend to freeze for extended periods of time. Perhaps it was better optimized on other systems as i know the developer had issues with porting this to the Switch, but these problems hampered my enjoyment of the game.

    Overall however; i had fun playing Battle Chasers Nightwar. The Combat and well paced mechanics mostly make up for the short comings otherwise present. I hope to see a continuation of the series as i do see the potential here. with a bit more polish and a more fleshed out story this series has potential to be a truly memorable experience.    … Expand
