Other aspects like poor optimization, archaic RPG mechanics, and a lackluster story keep this game from being one of the greats.

Combat is where this game truly shines. the overcharge mechanic makes for a unique engaging experience that will keep you enticed through the 30+ hours of the campaign. A lack of passive character leveling however; means you are essentially forced into picking 3 of the 6 party members to play through the whole game. Characters not in combat gain zero experience and the only way to swap active party members is to return to the hub area and manually add them to the roster. Leveling your bench warmer amounts to pointless grinding unfortunately.

The Music doesn't have any tracks that truly stand out, but the score fits the aesthetic of the game well enough. Character designs are unique and memorable with a quality cast of actors to boot. The design aesthetic is well presented, reminding me of Super Mario meets Diablo 3 but with JRPG mechanics. The story is extremely minimal with no real character growth and a mostly generic plot told in the form of comic stripes and bits of text lore found in the games 8 dungeons.

The truly annoying part of Battle Chasers on the Nintendo Switch were the technical issues that persisted through out my play through. A lack of optimization meant ever present frame drops/skips especially in combat. There were 6 crashes over the course of my campaign, and loading screens would tend to freeze for extended periods of time. Perhaps it was better optimized on other systems as i know the developer had issues with porting this to the Switch, but these problems hampered my enjoyment of the game.

Overall however; i had fun playing Battle Chasers Nightwar. The Combat and well paced mechanics mostly make up for the short comings otherwise present. I hope to see a continuation of the series as i do see the potential here. with a bit more polish and a more fleshed out story this series has potential to be a truly memorable experience.

This score is to counteract the trolls that gave this game a negative review. As of the date of this post the game hasn't even been released yet and the Devs behind this game deserve a fare shake. I request metacritic take down all user reviews until the game is actually released

    Pros:

    * Art style is nice. Cons: * There is not much of a story to speak of. * The overworld is too linear and "on-rails" * Music is bad to non-existing. Is there even battle music in this game? I really can't remember. It's safe to say that this game doesn't have any music that will stick in your head. * The game feels very "grindy" since there are so few cutscenes and story

    * The game feels very "grindy" since there are so few cutscenes and story moments to break it up.
    * The dungeons feel too similar and are too small. You could have run through them in 5 minutes had they not been littered with enemies around every corner.
    * You can only have 3 characters at the same time in the team and combat is pretty boring in general since you end up using the exact same abilities every fight, meaning it get's old fast.

I had never heard of the comics before playing this game so I was a bit disappointed that the game basically assumes you know these characters and their story from the start. However it's not a requirement by any means. The theme to this game is how slow everything is. From the combat, to traversing the world, to even buying and selling items. Nothing in this game goes at a pace quicker then a slow walk. And that's ok at times. I love the combat and theres alot of planning that goes along with it. And the characters themselves are fairly well done. Even if there's not character development that happens while in game. As for the story, its a very cookie cutter fantasy RPG style of story. There's nothing spectacular about it. However it kinda just works with how everything flows in the game. I really wish there was some more added content here. There's some stuff to do besides the main quest but not enough to make me want to go back and keep playing it. In the end, for what the game is, it's fairly well done for the type of budget it was clearly on. I personally didn't feel like the established world helped the game as much as the publisher thinks. I really don't want to jump into the comics after playing the game but I can see how someone might want to do that. In the end, this is just a decent RPG for those looking for one and can't spend 60 dollars on a new game. Expand

Hey, Metacritic, why is Nintendo Switch version available for review, when it has been delayed by the developer for an unannounced amount of time? Just asking since it already has 4 good and 6 bad reviews with an average of 4.2.

Runs like garbage on the switch. The balancing of fights is so chaotic its like they threw darts at a dartboard to decide how difficult to make each fight. Short, not worth the money. Stay far away, this is one of the worst games on the switch.

This is easily my favorite traditional turn-based RPG since FFX. The voice acting is amazing, the story is competent, and the gameplay is top-notch. To sum up about the battle system: it encourages ability use due to building up an extra (and temporary) mana pool.

Be careful reading about this game online as the game has been patched and improved significantly. All the characters added to the party are at the appropriate level and it addresses one of the main concerns about the game. The same can be said for the difficulty spikes.

Start the first dungeon on heroic, and then use legendary for the rest. This will not only help with the difficulty issues (due to leveling you better to prepare for the upcoming dungeons) it also improves the game as it makes the fear of starting the dungeon over something to actually enjoy. You're never really mindlessly going through, but you're carefully thinking about the next encounter or if you should retreat to town to rest to refill some dungeon abilities.

I really can't say enough how much I enjoy this game. In most RPG you eventually just spam basic attack to get through trash. That never happens here. It's a blast!

Awesome art, great gameplay, good characters. But the story was so cookie cutter, I struggled to continue playing it. It was boring. Just go there, kill that, then do the same thing, until you reveal the whole map. If it wasn't for that, I would have given it an 8.

Nice graphics and good rpg, but overall grinding for xps is a bit boring at some points, and a lot of fights are repetitive and not challenging. A few bugs and crashes also but nothing to be too frighten for.

I've been playing Battle Chasers: Nightwar for 3 hours. I do not care about the incredibly shallow characters. The combat is repetitive and the breadcrumbs they have given of the story so far have done little to hook me into this world.

Every review I could find for Battle Chasers Nightwar said it's a great game. But like Final Fantasy XIII, I'll never know. There are simply too many great games that don't ask me to wait for it to become fun. And I'd rather spend my time on one of those.

Also your other team members you are not using don't get any XP. So if they have any abilities you need for a boss or a fight later on, have fun to level up.

The art style was nice tough , anyway not my RPG.

However, if you haven't played any other JRPGs on the Switch yet, then there are cheaper options that are just as good or better and more expensive/similarly priced options that are significantly better in terms of quality and content. GRAFIKA

Battle Chasers: Nightwar on Nintendo Switch is a highly engrossing experience, which JRPG fans, raised on the likes of Final Fantasy and Suikoden, will savour every minute of. In interactive form, Joe Madureria's universe has been brought to life in a whole new way. Strengthening and upgrading its endearing characters is a very enjoyable process. The world is atmospherically rich and aesthetically gorgeous, and is supported by a great soundtrack and voice acting.

Take a moment to step back and appreciate Battle Chasers: Nightwar as a whole, and, looking beyond the game’s clear inspirations, it strikes out with enough of its own identity to deliver a stirring and memorable adventure. There’s still some room for improvement, especially in the unavoidable grind as you reach your quest’s later stages, but it is a promising start for Airship Syndicate that has made me excited to see what comes next.
