Sep 10, 2024If you enjoy platformers and you have an inkling of interest in learning more about Japan, BAKERU might be the perfect package for you
-
Sep 3, 2024Bakeru is a highly endearing little 3D platformer, one with a well-polished design and lots of fun ideas to spice things up during its relatively lengthy adventure. It really commits to its bit, and that part of it is almost infectious. Some framerate issues keep this from being all it could be on Switch, and I think people who come into this expecting Goemon are going to be disappointed by the fact that it’s not even trying to be that, but otherwise this is a highly-recommended title to close out your summer with.

Aug 27, 2024Bakeru is a warm, delightful thing and one of the best non-Nintendo platformers that I’ve ever played. Admittedly I’m partial to it given that I love roaming Japan for all its little regional quirks and specialties, and I loved discovering the developer’s interpretations of them here, but even if you’re not attuned to the game’s cultural resonance, its relentless joy will surely prove infectious.
-
Aug 23, 2024Bakeru is a delightful modern 3D platformer that captures the essence of classic titles like Goemon. With its vibrant world, challenging combat, and engaging exploration, Bakeru stands out as a must-play for genre fans. Despite some minor shortcomings in its combat mechanics, the game’s overall execution and nostalgic appeal make it an unforgettable experience.
-
Aug 23, 2024BAKERU blends smooth platforming with incredible combat (and a plethora of gameplay variety) to create one of the most fun games I’ve played in a while.
-
Aug 26, 2024BAKERU is one of the best 3D platformers that you can play on Nintendo Switch with its fantastical representation of Japan, tactile combat, cheerful atmosphere, and clever collectibles. Who knew that beating enemies with bachi sticks could be this much fun?
-
Aug 30, 2024BAKERU is a whimsical game full of fun combat, great references to Japanese culture, and a huge variety of unique stages to play. This is a title to check out!
-
Aug 25, 2024Bakeru is an action platformer with brilliant ideas underpinned by charming simplicity and a wonderful representation of Japanese culture. The variety offered throughout the adventure is a symptom of a familiar originality that will delight many Nintendo fans.
-
Aug 26, 2024With a framerate that can flutter, Good-Feel’s latest isn’t as technically polished as their Nintendo-published efforts. But jubilantly, Bakeru channels the same sense of exhilaration and wonder that the developers delivered in Yoshi's Crafted World and Princess Peach: Showtime. With a campaign that will send you across a cartoonish Japan and a drip feed of collectibles to gather, this is the kind of persistently pleasing experience that has become all too rare.
-
Sep 10, 2024Each stage is its own treat and without spoiling levels there’s not much to say other than it plays really well. I never doubted GoodFeel’s talent because I’ve seen their work; this was clearly a passion project as they published this themselves in Japan, so I imagine the budget wasn’t huge, yet they still produced a high-quality game. I had a lot of fun.
-
Aug 29, 2024BAKERU is a lovely Japan inspired action platformer, with novel drum-based combat and sensational collectables to gather.
-
Aug 28, 2024BAKERU is a light-hearted action game that’s as vibrant and boisterous as the festival you’re tasked with quelling. The combat can feel repetitive across the game’s 50+ levels, but there’s enough to learn and do to keep players pushing ahead in this rollicking adventure through fairy tale Japan.
-
Aug 28, 2024A fun, and funky platform brawler fans of Mystical Ninja will adore.
-
Aug 26, 2024Bakeru is a cute, fun, instantly accessible game for kids of all ages — and maybe even some adults. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it's a pleasantly comfortable platformer that provides the sort of pleasant experience you'd expect from a developer named Good-Feel. The only things potentially holding back the title are that it's a bit simple and basic for older gamers, and there's some occasionally poor performance. If you're a parent looking for a safe and comfy game for your kids, Bakeru is a great choice.
-
Aug 23, 2024Bakeru is an enjoyable romp that consistently delivers lighthearted action with a lot of charm even if it gets a little repetitive the deeper you get into it. Good-Feel clearly learned a lot from working with Nintendo because this game deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Nintendo’s lighter fare. This isn’t quite the Goemon spiritual successor I felt I was promised, but Bakeru is still a good time (especially for younger players) and I hope that Good-Feel both continues working with Nintendo and continues to work on projects like this.
-
Aug 23, 2024I don’t love Bakeru like I love Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, and that’s okay. This is very much a vibes game, and Good-Feel in 2024 isn’t Konami in 1998. There’s a lot of nostalgic evocation happening for sure, but it’s more like a collection of smiles and nods in service to a project that very much has its own identity. I appreciate it, even as I understand Bakeru isn’t entirely for me. A kid at the age I was back then, with a budding interest in anime and other Japanese cultural affectations would probably have a blast. And since the barriers for that space are so much smaller these days, Bakeru can be its whole self in a way that would’ve barred it from international travel (or a decent localization) back then. That’s what it feels like Bakeru is aiming for, and I think it hits that target cleanly.
-
Aug 23, 2024Bakeru is a sweet, snappy, and satisfying linear 3D platformer that feels like a wonderful callback to a genre that doesn’t get a ton of representation these days. It’s really easy (although the Western version ups the difficulty slightly) and has some performance problems, but the gameplay variety, snappy combat, oodles of collectibles, and gorgeous art style all come together to make for an adventure that you won’t want to miss out on.
-
Aug 23, 2024It’s not bad. I’d even say it’s very solid. It’s just somewhat bland. In its effort to provide a smooth surface, it has sanded off a lot of personality. Despite being over 50 (rather lengthy) levels long, in a few months, I probably won’t remember much about Bakeru. It provides a loving representation of Japan, but doesn’t let you live in it. It lets you visit, but you’re not allowed to leave the resort. I’m just saying: A fight between a teapot robot and a giant onigiri is a lot more effective if you’ve met the people you’re stepping on.
-
Aug 27, 2024A 3D exploration and action adventure capable of offering good and interesting moments, especially in terms of combat dynamics. It's not one of the most polished 3D games, but it's original and fun to explore.
-
Aug 23, 2024This is a lengthy action platformer geared towards kids that will get mileage out of those that previously enjoyed Goemon titles back in the day. There are many similarities between Konami's sidelined franchise and BAKERU, but Good-Feel's latest release suffers from repetitive gameplay and a poor frame rate that hinders enjoyment. There is a strong appeal to the Japanese themes and setting, along with a cartoon style, child-friendly story and low difficulty that means all age groups can appreciate it. Just don't expect something quite reaching the qualities of Nintendo's top platformers.
