The writer for the Gunvolt series really has a hate boner for GV himself. Every single ending is either extremely depressing or bittersweet at most. Not to mention characters and plot threads are just completely dropped between GV2 and 3. If you’re playing this game for the story, don’t bother. If you’re playing for that sweet sweet Azure Striker gameplay, once again, don’t bother. GunvoltThe writer for the Gunvolt series really has a hate boner for GV himself. Gunvolt is relegated to a time-limited power up for the new protagonist, Kirin. This should’ve been a Gunvolt Chronicles game setting up Kirin as a new protagonist. As it stands, it’s an insult to fans of the first 2 Gunvolt games. Expand

The Gunvolt series was one of the better, and cooler, platformer series in recent history; unfortunately the most recent games have just been entirely mediocre. Much like the previous Luminous Avenger, all the pieces are there for an absolute fantastic game, but it never comes together. Regrettably, the story in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 is the weakest in the series, and the two main characters are far more annoying than entertaining.

As a whole, Gunvolt 3 is a solid entry in the series. The gameplay is challenging but supported by precise controls that, when mastered, will see players flying across the screen clearing out whole waves of enemies. Striving to get top Kudos rankings in each stage can quickly become addicting. Although the bloated storyline can become tedious at times, and the lack of a properly playable Gunvolt at all times are disappointing, this is still a game that Gunvolt and action game fans won’t want to miss out on.

Inti Creates has turned out another well-crafted title, albeit a divisive one. Fans of Gunvolt have been a little put-off that he's not front and center here, but otherwise, everything here works quite well. [Issue #61 – September/October 2022, p. 19]
